Yep. That is clearly understood. The door needs space to slide into.

Regarding the thickness of the wall, it definitely doesn't need to be 14" thick and blocks won't be used for that section of wall. One can use bricks with enough space in between them for the door. I've seen bricks as slim as 100mm.

I think you can achieve that even without the bricks,
You can use wood/board to create void for the pocket door to slide in.

The madam wanted an open concept floor plan, but I would like to be able to close some areas off from viewing at times (depending on the visitor). For this, we will use pocket doors.

Cool, you build partitions in offices .

We are talking about residential homes here where security and privacy are paramount.

Same concept can be replicated in our homes sir.
The western world doesn't use bricks for all their internal walls, rather they use wood and plaster boards and I'm sure you can attest to that.
So why do you think we can't do same here.

Agreed security should be paramount in our homes so pocket/barn/sliding doors shouldn't be our first option for entrance and exit doors.

What's possible and what's common are two different things in the Nigerian building arena.

I don't see too many people building walls out of other than concrete blocks in Nigeria.

I build non block wall for people, especially in offices .

It's my understanding that Oga Egunmogaji is the kind of person that goes for what you wants and not what is common.

Someone also spoke about pocket doors. Not sure how one can introduce that into our concrete block builds. It's possible alright but that mean at least 14" minimum walls grin

My solution is barn doors.

You don't necessarily need 14" wall to install a pocket door, what is actually required is twice the door dimension.
The remaining half space will be boarded with ply or gypsum board and after screeding, you have the same appeal as the plastered wall.

Barn or sliding doors is also a way to go, it definitely cost less than pocket door.

Is the 3rd door in your post a pocket door? I'm looking to have some custom made in the near future.

It's not a pocket door,
Note: to make a pocket door, you need twice the openable space, i.e to make a 0.9m pocket door, we need 1.8m space.

This might pose a small problem. I have spoken to the architect and he confirmed it's his design. I also consulted the owner of this house on this.

However, I have seen some doors as high as 2.4 meters in Nigeria before.

Yeah I've seen metal doors of 2.4m, but if your client intends to use imported wood doors,
That's when the small problem will surface.

The alternative will be to make the doors locally and that's when I come in.

With 10 blocks, that means your looking at door heights of around 2.35m against the regular 2.1m.
That might pose a problem during door installation depending on the type of doors to be used.
I'll suggest dropping the lintel height around the door areas (i.e the carpenter should drop the bottom below the block level)

I concur with the two suggestions op made.

When this service was last yr, I quickly spotted the risk involved and decided to call Gt customer care centre.
I told them I want to be able to choose the myself so I can change it whenever I want, the response was they'll look into it.
I said ok, I want the option to out of the service whenever If I don't want to use it cus you can't compel all your customers to use a service they're not comfortable with, the response was same.

I guess all the guys saying in this era of BVN it's easy to catch a criminal doesn't have wife, kids, siblings and friends that are close to you.

Are you gonna kill them when they transfer air time and petty cash from your account?

Have you also gone through the rigours of recovering stolen fund from a Nigerian bank?

I love the 737 service, I think I'm among the first group of people that started using when it was just for air time to ur registered mobile number, later came the option of buying air time for others and now the fund transfer option.
I use the service every time in fact I can't remember the last time I bought airtime from a vendor but the service has to be improved on.
Politics / Re: Abia State Pioneers Cement Based Roads. Daily Times. by koman: 6:57pm On Sep 20, 2015
Cement paved roads is the best for our climate.
But to last longer, the right materials and procedures has to strictly followed.

There's cement paved road construction ongoing in Port Harcourt (Igwuruta/Eneka/Rumukwurusi road) what's going on there should be best described as waste of Rivers State resources because the load bearing capacity of that road is zero.
Any of the completed section doesn't last more than a month and start developing pot holes.
When the pot holes become bigger, the reinforcement rods used for the road construction also pose another danger to vehicles.

My take is, if we must adopt cement or concrete paved roads, let's do it the right way.

cmecproblem:

is there anything that can be done to rectify this after a building has been finished but the plastering and plumbing has not been done yet?

It will be difficult to achieve because ducts are planned from onset.
Let's say you want one duct on one section of the building,
to achieve that, all the bathrooms on that section has to be aligned and if they're not, that means you'll more than one.

But there's something else that can be done.
You can do surface piping and later make a cover with aluminium profile to cover them up,
But the cover won't be the regular type, it will be U-form.

I was speaking with a friend about embedded pipes in blocks, which I really loved, but he raised a disturbing issue. He said what if the pipes burst for any reason... That means one would have to break through the walls.

What do you have to say regarding this sir?

Embedded/conduit piping has better appeal or esthetics compared to surface piping but its not the best.
Sewage pipes are made of pvc, and pvc doesn't last forever (not even whitchtech IPS fusion system that promises 50yrs warranty) and so there's need for maintenance in the long run.
Whenever the there's leakage or maintenance issues, you must crack the wall before you can assess the sewage pipe.
This means whenever there's need for maintenance you'll probably the the services of a plumber, a mason, & sometimes a tiler to fix a single problem.

Another problem with this system of piping is during the casting of columns/beams and decking, if the pipes are not properly sealed it might get filled with concrete and no one will notice it,
You get to know about the blockage during final installation and by then its already late so you end up doing surface piping for that particular line.

The question now is what's the best way to fo about this.

The solution is,
During the architectural/structural design, provisions should be made for duct.
The ducts are created with blocks & sewage pipes/supply line run in them.
The ducts have covers (aluminium sun breaker as it's locally called) to cover them up when all the plumbing job has been completed.
Whenever the need for maintenance arises, you open them up, do your servicing and close them back.
The duct covers also adds to the esthetics of the building.
