Nairaland / General / INCREASE YOUR VALUE by KOPHO125: 6:54pm On Oct 29, 2013
I have a very special gift for you. As expected, it’s not in real cash…*winks. It’s a gift that is being given out of my strong desire to make sure you are inspired and therefore rise above all sorts of challenges you might be passing through in your day-to-day activities. Remember, life is not a bed of roses. Please, make sure you digest this gift (given in the form of write up) and therefore make use of it; I’m sure you would become a better person.

Charles Darwin once said: “A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life”
Gone are the days when the future used to mean 5, 10 or 20 years from the present. In this age of highly driven developments, the future is not far from us anymore. In fact, the future is now! It therefore means that you must be well prepared; you must improve your worth every day so that you can remain relevant. This is the time to prepare so that you can create an enviable future for yourself, your family and our dearest nation. Let’s consider this simple illustration. Where you are right now (including your position, worth, beliefs) is HERE and the enviable future you desire is THERE. You would notice that it was “T” that differentiated them and that is TIME. So, time is the currency you need to invest in other to move from ‘here’ to ‘There’. Please note that time exists only for the future and if you don’t invest your time now for the future, it means you have no future. Any programme/movie you watch on television is simply telling you that you are watching someone else’s vision. If such programme/movie has not added value to your life; if it did not instruct, educate or inspire you, then you have wasted that part of your life.
In other to make wise investments, what are you expected to do? First, you must know who you are. You should be able to figure out what you do with passion, even without remuneration, it’s still very interesting to you. There is something you do better than others. That is your goldmine, it is better you start digging it now! If you are yet to find out, please do as soon as possible because your greatness is tied to it. Learn to do things that suit you. Simply put, you must define your uniqueness! John Helmenson said, “Imitation is your limitation. The more you try to be like someone else, the less of yourself you become. And if you try to be like someone else, the best you can be is second best.”
Secondly, you must sharpen your skills. Read books, attend seminars, engage in trainings, and learn new skills. Don’t settle for anything, you are more than a mediocre! If you want to venture into something new e.g. business, go and buy books on how to start a business. If you are preparing to get married, read books that talk about marriage. You know why all these? It’s to ensure that you tap from the experience of others so that you don’t have to make the mistakes they have made. Begin to add value to your life, Read!!! You can increase your value to the extent that your absence will be felt even at your place of work. Let me share this quote with you, “You’ll be the same in 5 years as you are today, except for the people you meet and the books you read”- Charlie Jones.
Finally, you need right association. Keep away unprofitable friends; cut off every relationship with people who are where you don’t want to be in life; keep off people who try to make your gifts/talents seem inferior to theirs, you may never succeed around them. Nobody’s gift is better than someone else’s gift. Instead, we need all of the different gifts even to succeed as a nation. Always remember, you need the right people to succeed. Immediately you drop this article, take a pen and start making plans for your life. It’s not all about knowing the laws of success, it’s about applying them. It’s time to act. Take bold steps, take risks. Don’t be fearful! Shun procrastination! Forget about the reasons why it won’t work, always focus on the reasons why it will work. The time is now!!!
Nigeria as a nation needs you to grow, especially now that it is much more required. By increasing your value and influencing the people around you to do the same, the Golden Nigeria is at hand.
ACTION POINT: Know your worth; read wide so that you don’t exist instead of living; associate with the right people. You must get a direction for your life now so that your future will not be full of regrets. Time is a priceless egg; guide it jealously so that it doesn’t break. SEE YOU AT THE TOP!

Health / Friend-turned-enemy, The IN And OUT Of Appendicitis! by KOPHO125: 3:41pm On Oct 22, 2013
Many would say they have been diagnosed of ‘appendix’. Common! That’s a popular misnomer; it’s a structure, not a medical condition. An appendix is a small pouch shaped like a small finger; it is on the right side of the abdomen (tummy) connected to the large intestine. Experts are not sure what the appendix is for. Mr DM, a 300L student in a Nigerian University, once suffered from appendicitis. Below is an excerpt from his recall:
“I started feeling the pain in the year 2008 and it was mostly at the lower part of my tummy. But, I didn’t pay so much attention to it until 2009 when the sensation became frequent. I had used all sorts of pain relievers but the pain would recur. However, hell was let loose around June of the same year when the pain became increasingly unbearable. I was rushed to the hospital and a diagnosis of appendicitis was made. In fact, I had to undergo emergency operation in other to save my life. Thank God, I’m a living testimony.”
What is Appendicitis?
It is a condition in which the appendix becomes swollen, inflamed and filled with pus. It generally affects people aged 10 and 30, but it can strike at any age.
Causes
It is widely believed that there are two causes:
 Infection- a stomach infection may have found its way to the appendix.
 Obstruction- a hard piece of stool/food may have got trapped in the appendix. The bacteria in the trapped stool may then have infected the appendix.
What are the Signs and Symptoms?
Pain, starting around the navel, then moving down and to the right side of the abdomen. The pain gets worse when moving, taking deep breaths, coughing, sneezing, or being touched in this area. Others include:
o Progressively worsening pain in the abdomen
o Urinating often, or difficult or painful urination
o Nausea
o Vomiting
o Diarrhea/Constipation
o Low Fever
o Loss of appetite
o Inability to pass gas (fart)
N.B: Report to the hospital in case you have any of these signs and/or symptoms.
Diagnosis
This can be very challenging. Many patients do not have typical symptoms- the pain may be located in different parts of the body. Other conditions may have very similar symptoms, such as gastroenteritis, urinary tract infection, ectopic pregnancy or even kidney stone. Moreover, not everybody have their appendix in exactly the same place. The healthcare professional will examine you, ask questions and run some tests when required.
Prevention
Research has shown that balanced diet has a vital role to play in reducing the incidence of appendicitis. We have been made to understand that consuming high fibre diets, fresh vegetables and fruits help to lower the risk; the softer stools as products of these diets are less likely to get trapped in the appendix. Others include drinking at least 8 glasses of water daily and regular exercise to prevent fecal matter from lodging and hardening in the large intestine.
Treatment
In rare cases in which the infection is very mild, antibiotics can be given to treat the patient. However, in most cases, a type of surgery called APPENDECTOMY is required to remove the appendix. Sometimes a decision will be made to surgically remove the appendix because it is too risky to wait around for the tests to confirm the diagnosis. Without treatment, an inflamed appendix can rupture, causing the lining of the abdomen to get infected. That can be a life-threatening condition.

Literature / 10/10/13- Once "Otondos" And Now "Ex-corpers" by KOPHO125: 12:31pm On Oct 10, 2013
Specially dedicated to all BATCH C CORP MEMBERS.
There is nothing that has a beginning without an end. About 11 months ago, they started serving their motherland with so much enthusiasm and zeal. 10-10-13 is all about the Batch C NYSC Corp members who have gone through thin and thick ranging from camp drills to sunburns and meager ‘allowee’….*winks. Despite all of these, many said it has added value to their lives and afforded them the opportunity to meet wonderful people who would otherwise not come their way if not for the scheme. I have some of them as friends and I’m so proud of them because they are treasures. They have this to say:
“It was awesome and sometimes, very tiring”- Atolagbe Oluwakemi
“My service year was worthwhile and I learnt how to really persevere, endure, tolerate and be patient. I’m a changed and renewed lady in these past 10 months”- Oladiran Busayo
“The scheme has given me the opportunity to meet and relate with people from diverse ethnic groups and various backgrounds”- Akindipe Dara
“It’s an experience that has informed, transformed and formed me……in all, I have learnt a lot especially how to relate with peepz”- Oladejo Oluwakemi
“I enjoyed my service year. It was awesome and it has been God all the way”- Osasona Victoria
“It was a worthwhile and great experience because I have added a lot to my existence”- Mariam Omobolanle
“It was lovely and interesting; it is an unforgettable lifetime experience”- Oyediran Olamide
……and now, it’s real. They are no longer corp members. This is what I have to tell all BATCH C Corp members observing Passing Out Parade (POP) today- “Many people are not successful because they are afraid to take the bold step. You know why? They are thinking about what people will say when they fail. Many would say what if I fail? What if it doesn’t work out? That’s fear of failure and criticism. Remember, if you don’t fail, you can’t succeed. I challenge you to take that bold step now. You must act on all the plans you’ve got! Put all the skills you have learnt into use, they will work for you. Don’t be discouraged by the harsh economic condition of our nation because you have a great asset inside you. Act on those ideas you have got and be diligent at whatever you do. Above all, Nigeria really needs you to grow. Please, be exemplary leaders wherever you are so that together we can build a NEW NIGERIA that our great grandchildren will be proud of.
As I take a break for now, you must know that YOU ARE PRICELESS, INVALUABLE, INCREDIBLE, and FABULOUS BECAUSE THERE IS A GOLDMINE INSIDE YOU! No lies, that’s what you are! Do not let the whole world down, Keep the flag flying. You will succeed! I love you all!!!”
Wishing YOU all the best in life. Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Literature / There Is A Goldmine Inside You! by KOPHO125: 1:03am On Sep 28, 2013
Gold is a well known substance with such a great worth that is second to none. In fact, it’s so invaluable that many nations depend on it as a source of income. Countries like China, United States, Australia, South Africa, and Ghana derive a huge percentage of their national income from it. Little wonder the word “gold” represents treasure. It therefore means that the goldmine-the source of gold- is a place to behold!

Dear reader, I want to reveal a secret to you right now. Well, you might have heard it before or perhaps you are coming across it for the first time. Here it is in the simplest form: ‘THERE IS A GOLDMINE INSIDE YOU’; it’s a fact, not a myth! There is a great reserve of the highly sought-after treasure inside you. That means you are precious! You are priceless!! You are invaluable!!! I mean YOU. YES, the person reading this article. Then, why have you embraced mediocrity? You must realise that the world is waiting for you to bring forth the refined gold that is inside you. What are you waiting for? There are great ideas in you, there are great skills that you need to discover. God has made you complete, do not undermine his purpose for your life. Don’t join the league of people that believe you don’t need to stand tall in the society. You know what? They are yet to know what they really worth. Today, many people believe they are failure because they have failed some exams. Some are even dejected because they have failed in their relationships. Many believe they were created to be poor because they don’t have enough cash on them. Oh no! They are very wrong. All these are just some of the mining processes that the raw gold in you need to pass through before becoming the much adorable gold that the world has been waiting for.
It’s so pathetic that some young people have even lost their self-worth. The way you see yourself determines your carriage in the society. This in turn dictates the quality of respect you get from people in the society. At times, some people feel inferior to enter certain places. It’s so bad that they can’t even talk to some set of people because they see themselves as too inferior and worthless. If you belong to this category, please there is an urgent need to change your mentality right now; you have a perfect nature and there is a brighter future that lies ahead of you. Many unborn babies are crying and waiting eagerly for the irreplaceable legacies you will leave for them to follow; you can’t afford to let them down. Remember, there is an extensive goldmine inside you. I have heard certain young people say they can’t stand up to speak because they are not “beautiful” or “handsome”. Surprisingly, many would say they can’t disclose their identities just because they did not study some hyped courses or attend certain institutions. Common! That’s the thinking pattern of a man without any seed in him. For instance, there is this general sentiment about polytechnic graduates in Nigeria and yet, the highly respected motivational speaker and mentor, Sam Adeyemi, is a polytechnic graduate. Are you surprised? Please, don’t be! It’s not all about institution or course, it’s about YOU; Institutions will only help in some stages of the mining process, the whole task of refining that innate gold still lies with you.
Let me share another of such sentiment with you. Many young people would say they can never become teachers. In fact, they believe teaching is only meant for those who do not have better job offers. Yet, I have a friend who had made up her mind right from childhood to become a successful teacher. Her name is Miss Ibitoye Omobolanle; she inspires me a lot of young people. Considering her level of brilliance, you would naturally conclude that she is best suited for medicine or law profession as widely believed. But, she would always say: “Teaching is my passion, I love it so much. I want to build lives right from primary school stage; I want to sow seeds into the lives of the future leaders. Teachers are builders and I’m very proud to be one of them”. I’m not surprised that she is a highly desirable teacher by parents of pupils in the school. It pays to be diligent at whatever you do.
Starting from today, you must know your worth. Walk on the street with your shoulders high. No more worries, no more regrets, no more inferiority complexes, no more depression. You must not allow the great wealth inside you waste without expression. Dig the goldmine inside you, refine the gold and offer it for the whole world, especially our dearest nation to use. If you refuse to do that, many people will starve to death. Do you want to be tagged a “murderer”? God Forbid! Then, you must start today, tomorrow might be too late.
TAKE HOME POINT: Forget all the failures that you have experienced so far, they are mere events that can’t determine who you are because YOU ARE A READY-MADE TREASURE. Start a new beginning; this is your time to shine!

Literature / Your Brain Is A Wonder by KOPHO125: 9:52pm On Sep 22, 2013
Many of us don’t know what we carry. Maybe you don’t even know that your brain is a WONDER. Please, kindly spare 5 minutes of your time to take a look at how much you can operate in the realm of excellence if you make proper use of this amazing creature called THE HUMAN BRAIN. Shortly before that, let’s see how powerful our brains are.
The human brain has over 100 billion cells and connections; an average of 60,000 thoughts is generated by it every day. It’s incredible to know that 20-30% of all the calories we eat are utilized by the brain. Little wonder it continues to grow throughout life. Unlike computers, our brains have unlimited capacity to store information; you can’t measure it in Gigabytes or Terabytes. Why would God give us such a complex organ system unless He expects us to use it?
It’s therefore very shocking to hear you say “I CAN’T”. “I can’t do this or I can’t do that”. Why on earth should you think that you can’t achieve some feats or even get to some heights in life when you have such an amazing creature in your head? Then, you are growing lean even in the midst of plenty. Your brain belongs to you, it’s your property; don’t let it shrink to death while you are still living. That will be a huge disaster! You know why? It’s because so many lives are dependent on you. If you fail, they have failed. Lest I forget, I must inform you that your brain can be rewired. But, no one can do it for you other than yourself. How? You can change and re-arrange your neural networks (basis of reasoning) by subjecting it to frequent mental exercise via reading, creation of ideas and solutions, learning of new skills and languages. It means if you are performing below expectations in any area of your life, you can turn the situation around and do better. It’s not late for you to carry out repairs and be an all-round success. Give it a shot! I’m sure you won’t regret it.
In every area of your life, you must strive to be the best of your kind. There are over 7 billion people on the surface of the earth. Yet, there is nobody that has the exact features as you; no one smiles the way you do; no one has the exact type of your fingerprint. It shows how unique you are. Should this unique ‘INCREDIBLE YOU’ go into extinction without benefiting humanity? If your answer to this question is NO. Then, you must have a deep reflection and think of how the ‘AMAZING YOU’ can utilize your brain maximally and be the change agent that NIGERIA and the AFRICA continent have been waiting for. As a citizen of the GOLDEN NIGERIA, you must not settle for mediocrity.
Please, have this at the back of your mind. Too much stress overloads the brain with powerful hormones that are intended only for short-term duty in emergency situations. Their cumulative effects cause damages and therefore kill brain cells. Rome was not built in a day; endeavour to live a stress-free life in the course of making the best out of your life. The more you rest, the more refreshed you are!
TAKE HOME POINT:
1. How much have you utilized this amazing creature that God has planted in you?
2. Are you ready to further make use of your brain to make Nigeria and the world a better place?

Health / The Dilemma Of Sex And Unwanted Pregnancies, The Way Out! by KOPHO125: 11:07pm On Sep 21, 2013
Everyday, millions of Nigerian youths get trapped in the dilemma of enjoying sex and at the same time avoiding its associated risks, especially pregnancy. While some are shy to discuss it with their healthcare providers and are therefore misled by wrong counsel from peers, many believe they are ‘experts’ themselves. This has led to many unwanted pregnancies, unsafe abortions, death and diseases which could have otherwise been prevented. This short piece will educate you on the basis of pregnancy and how it can be safely prevented. Guess what! The knowledge which is about to be shared is equally important to the male as well as the female gender.

How is Pregnancy formed?
Many ladies would remember when they saw their first ‘show’ of blood- the gesture of initiation into motherhood. Mummies are so concerned. You would recall some mums saying: "Now, you are a woman; do not allow any boy touch you unless you become pregnant". So funny, isn't it? I'm sure most of us believed that the touch also included things like a handshake. The first confirmation of pregnancy is usually the "missing of your period" and it's the easiest if not the simplest way of affirming pregnancy. It has been used from time immemorial and it's not likely to become outdated. What bring about this “missing of period”? Then, a very good knowledge of the female menstrual cycle is crucial. Let’s review it; seize this opportunity to know it better. Please note that a good knowledge of the menstrual cycle also tells how healthy you are e.g a woman's menstrual cycle can become affected if she has hormonal imbalance, goitre, pituitary tumor or even emotional disturbances.
Menstrual cycle- it is a series of changes that occurs in the uterus (womb) and the ovaries (organs that produce eggs) for the purpose of sexual reproduction. This cycle often ranges between 21 and 35days but 28 days on the average. They are round-the-clock events that are only interrupted by pregnancy or menopause and are regulated by hormones. Simply put, it’s like the tyres of a bicycle; they go round with no gap along it's circumference unless they are torn. Four stages (phases) make up the cycle. First, Menstrual Phase: It occurs because the womb is “weeping” as a result of failure of implantation (planting of new ‘baby-to-be’). It does this by shedding off the wall that has been prepared for receiving it and this "tears" come out as blood since it is no longer relevant. It lasts between 3 to 5 days. During this period some people may experience pain called Menstrual Pain.. Proliferative Phase: The wall of the womb that was shed earlier on begins to heal, without scars though. This occurs from day 3 or 5 to day 14 of the menstrual cycle. Meanwhile, the ovaries are preparing to release eggs around this time. Ovulation is the third phase during which there is release of egg(s) from the ovary (ies). Generally, it is said that ovulation occurs around day 14. Usually the days before ovulation, you'll notice creamy whitish discharge which is usually watery, a gradual rise in your body temperature which tends to be highest on the day of ovulation. You can feel this by gently placing the back of your hand on your forehead or by using a thermometer. Other signs include breasts tenderness, a sharp pain on either side of the lowest part of your tummy depending on which ovary is releasing the egg(s) at that point in time. Some ladies may spot a little in their panties. The secretory phase: this is the stage in which the healing processes of the walls of the womb is complete and these walls thickens in preparation for receiving the new ‘baby-to-be’. It helps to nurture the egg(s) released especially if fertilization (fusion of sperm and egg), an aftermath of unprotected sexual intercourse, occurs. It lasts for 12 to 16 days after ovulation after which the uterus bleeds again if fertilization fails to occur.
Common Mistakes Women Make
Many ladies miscalculate their cycle: The day you start bleeding is day 1 of your cycle. So, count from that day until you get to day 14; do not count fourteen days after you stop bleeding. Ovulation takes place on the 14th day. This day 14 may not apply to every woman but there are some signs that can help with that. A few have been mentioned earlier. You must also bear in mind that it is not only on the day of ovulation that a woman can become pregnant after intercourse. Ovulation lasts between 12 to 24 hours i.e. once the egg is laid, it can only survive a maximum of one day. But the sperms for the males can survive within the female reproductive tract for up to 72 hours. For some, it can last for as long as five days...stubborn little fellas! So, if you engage in unprotected sexual intercourse few days before you ovulate, you are likely to become pregnant. Don’t get confused!
Contraception
It means methods or devices used in preventing pregnancy. Obviously, the rate of unwanted pregnancies amongst the youths is alarming and this has led to huge setbacks- increase in the number of school dropouts, single parents, illegal abortions, maternal morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, Nigeria ranks 10th in the world in these. Therefore, a good grasp of fertility and contraception would go a long way in reducing this decadence. Some of the means include: diaphragm, cervical cap, spermicidal foams, oral contraception, injections, implants, patches, Intrauterine Devices and sterilization. I must clearly state that Dual Protection is very important in other to prevent pregnancy and Sexually Transmitted Infections; it involves the use of condoms and pills. Fertility awareness (good knowledge of your menstrual cycle) should also be borne in mind, especially by the females, since they are at the receiving end of any ‘error’ that ensues. To all ladies, "if you can't bear the thought of carrying his child, why let him lay hands on you".
Above all, there is a method that offers 100% protection from unwanted pregnancies and numerous sexually transmitted infections. With it, you’ve got no worries at all. It’s no other method than ABSTINENCE. Remember, Life is beautiful and the future that lies ahead of YOU is precious!

Politics / Core Values Of The Golden Nigeria by KOPHO125: 9:25pm On Sep 16, 2013
“It’s not the amount of money we make or the prestige our TITLES carry that determines how SUCCESSFUL we are, True SUCCESS is determined by the number of LIVES we make BETTER”

We have heard so many sermons and agitation for CHANGE in Nigeria. This is a pointer to the fact that we want to live in a better country where we won’t continue to suffer in the midst of plenty. It’s time to stop being hearers only; we must as well be doers of these words. Are you an ambassador for the GOLDEN NIGERIA? Dear reader, the genuineness of your answer is a great determinant of how near we are to the promise land because we are the GOVERNMENT. I have identified certain qualities which will help improve you as an individual and therefore lay the foundation for a desirable Nigeria. They are called the 7 CORE VALUES OF THE GOLDEN NIGERIA. Thanks for your patience so far.
As a citizen of the Golden NIGERIA, YOU must:
1. Influence lives positively.
2. Strive to be the best of your kind.
3. Believe that our destiny is shared as a nation.
4. Live a life of dignity and integrity.
5. Continue to increase your value.
6. Know that success is not relative.
7. Not depend on your strength alone, embrace GOD.

We shall be analyzing all of these core values in the next few weeks. Don’t miss out!
Let’s take a look at CORE VALUE 1 very briefly. If you have the right persons in your life, the journey of life is made easier for you. You will have the right persons around you only if you are a right person yourself; ‘like’ begets ‘like’. You need people to succeed. Sow the seeds of greatness in people’s lives; complete people, do not compete with them. The law of harvest has illustrated it, “Whatever you sow, you shall reap in due time”. It’s not the amount of money we make or the prestige our titles carry that determines how successful we are, True success is determined by the number of lives we make better. Be a person that is a positive influence to others and it will come back to you 10 times; be a person that gives and the world will open up to you.
Life is not about money alone- a few words of encouragement, a little assistance, and a little back up could help change the course of someone’s life for better. Don’t you want to be part of someone’s success story? Please, endeavor to be. You think it’s nothing? My friend, it’s something! Do not wait till you receive something in return before you use your God-given talents, abilities, positions to help make the life of someone better. Remember, you are only privileged to be where you are today; you are not better than those who are not there. Do not misuse the opportunity! Save a life today.
TAKE HOME POINT: Have you ever made the life of someone better than it used to be? If YES, how many are they? If NO, list the reasons and make necessary amendments as soon as possible.

Health / Hrf Health Angle: "Will Drinking Milk Help Cure Your Peptic Ulcer Disease?" by KOPHO125: 9:16pm On Sep 16, 2013
Miss AA, ND 2 Polytechnic student shared her experience on Ulcer. Here is an excerpt:
“I started taking felvin about two years ago to relieve my menstrual pain. I never knew it had caused many damages to my stomach until I was diagnosed of Peptic Ulcer Disease in July, 2013. Funnily enough, I didn’t notice anything until 3 months ago when I started feeling pain in the upper part of my tummy; eating was always making it worse. Mehn, the feeling was not pleasant at all. But the good news is that I’m actually free now after receiving proper treatment.”

What is Peptic Ulcer Disease?
Please, let’s take a look at this question very quickly. "Which of these wounds will heal faster: the one on your back where your touch is within limit or the one on your chest which you can easily reach and take care of?” Peptic Ulcer Disease abbreviated as PUD, is therefore a wound found mainly on the walls of our stomach and duodenum. Hmmm... the duodenum! It’s the pipe that connects to the stomach and channels food contents to the other parts of the digestive tract. This time, the wound is neither within reach nor visible to the eye, it’s deep down there.
What are the causes?
It the end result of an imbalance between the digestive fluids in the stomach and duodenum. This is mostly caused by some bacteria called Helicobacter pylori. These bacteria cause more damages in the duodenum compared to the stomach. Your risk of infection with these organisms is high when you consume food prepared under less than ideal conditions/exposed to contaminated water or soil, when you don’t observe adequate sanitation practices amongst others. Another major culprit is Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs. They are a group of Pain killers such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Felvin and a few others. PUD could also be a result of tumor in the stomach or duodenum.
Symptoms
 Dull aching pain or peppery sensation which is usually on the upper part of your abdomen (tummy) or even under the left rib cage. It is mostly associated with hunger, relieved upon eating or even worsens with food. Sometimes, it might wake you up at night.
 Heart burn
 Other symptoms include weight loss, bloating, water brash (the sour taste of acid in your mouth), nausea, vomiting. There may also be blood in stool or the stool may appear tarry dark and foul smelling. In fact, there may even be back pain.
Diagnosis
There are other medical conditions with similar clinical presentations to those above. If you are having any of these symptoms, visit the hospital. Your Health Care Professional will ask you certain questions, might run some tests on you as well.
Who are those that are more likely to develop PUD?
You have a greater risk if you belong to any of these categories:
• Family history of Peptic Ulcer Disease
• Regular consumption of alcohol
• Smoking of Cigarettes
• Avoid overuse of Aspirin and/or other NSAIDS.
• Stress
• Eating food prepared under less ideal conditions

Treatment
The GOOD NEWS is that PUD can be treated and this is only a matter of compliance with the required drugs for a maximum of two weeks. You will be given some drugs which help to reduce acid levels and allow your ulcer to heal. They are called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI). You may also be given certain antibiotics as well as tips on lifestyle changes. Taking milk cannot cure your ulcer. In fact, milk can make your ulcer worse. It provides brief relief of pain because it coats the stomach lining. But, milk can also stimulate the stomach to produce more acid and digestive juices, which can aggravate ulcers.
Prevention Tips
o Don’t smoke
o Avoid alcohol
o Curb the use of over the counter NSAID use
o Reduce Stress
o Good hygiene practices
o If you have symptoms of an ulcer, contact your health care provider.
If you are already suffering from PUD, ensure that you:
o Eat slowly.
o Eat 6 small meals instead of 3 big ones.
o Don’t eat or drink anything for at least 2 hours before going to bed and if you take naps, try sleeping in a chair.
o Avoid spicy foods, caffeine and coffee.
There is no doubting the fact that wounds eventually close up and heal on their own provided the ‘indicting’ agent has be dealt with. The lining of our alimentary canal particularly the stomach has a very great tendency of shedding and generating newer cells. Despite this, the end result of a wound is nothing but a scar. The message is this:
So far H. pylori keeps its territory within the stomach, NSAIDs are used without prescription, you wait to feel pain before you eat, then, these scars will open up and even form worse scars……And you must realise that Peptic Ulcer Disease can be fatal if not treated. It is fatal in the sense that it can become complicated and this could result in: Perforation of the intestines, blood in stool, blood in vomitus, and blockage of the stomach outlet.

Literature / Fellow Nigerians, "The Revolution Is Now"! by KOPHO125: 11:50pm On Aug 30, 2013
“When you are thinking of how you will iron your clothes before they take the light, how you must wake up early to fetch water before it becomes dirty, you can’t engage yourself in creative thinking!”

Few weeks ago, I was on the queue in other to get some cash from the ATM of a bank. Having endured the harshness of the sunny day for almost an hour, the machine finally displayed “OUT OF SERVICE” at a time I was just few minutes away from making withdrawal. Almost everybody became angry and felt bitter about the state of the nation; the revelations by one of the aggrieved persons remain fresh in my memory. He said: “Nigeria is doomed! Let’s just take it as our fate and live everyday as they come so far we are not hungry”, He continued: “You see, there is nobody that can save Naija, everybody is interested in his/her pocket, all na lie! Abeg!!”. Of course, this was not the first time I would come across such revelations. But, this time, it dealt a huge blow on me probably because he was a young man. Then, I asked myself a question: “Does it therefore mean that majority of Nigerians, especially the youths, think this way? If YES, What does the future hold for our dearest nation?
A few days later, I was chatting with a friend and colleague on BBM; it was all about the state of the nation. I will like to share it with you. Here is an excerpt:
Deolu: It just happened that the so called politicians became greedy. And now, people are asking: “what have they gained?”
Kofo: Yea, no dividends. If this generation can campaign for change, we will achieve it but majority of the youths are not enthusiastic.
Deolu: Well, ours is a generation of talkative. People can talk! But when it comes to action, we are nowhere to be found!
Kofo (sighs): Hmmmmm
Deolu: Like I will always say, we must blame our fathers for all these.
Kofo: How?
Deolu: I get angry when some middle aged to elderly people tell stories of when they were in school…..their fathers, our grandfathers gave them that, so what happened? How come they couldn’t pass such good life down, rather with their greed and gluttony, they spoilt everything.
Kofo: The facilities we have are retrogressing, from education to health and all that. It’s very pathetic.
Deolu: …….And funny enough, we (the youths) are imbibing such selfish nature…Did you just mention education!!! We have gone soooooo backward!
Kofo: There is no fear of God anymore. Dignity is gone.
Deolu: The youths are frustrated, they can’t think anymore! You know some things should not occupy your mind. When you are thinking of how you will iron your clothes before they take the light, how you must wake up early to fetch water before it becomes dirty; you can’t engage yourself in creative thinking!
Kofo: That’s very true! I agree with you
Deolu: And that’s why our production industry is in shambles. When others are exploring space, we have not yet solved the problems within us. If you don’t settle yourself, you can’t reach out.
(……….and then, there was a sudden break in communication for almost 15 minutes)
Deolu: I’m sorry, my battery went flat. Another indictment of our society- ELECTRICITY!
Kofo: It is well.
This is the view of a Nigerian youth. Many Nigerians have been clamoring for a revolution similar to those of Syria and Egypt. Is that the answer? Definitely NO! Let’s consider this: A farmer once noticed that his farm produce were not encouraging. He invited researchers to help him out and it was discovered that the seeds he planted were not viable despite the fact that the soil was very fertile. What did he do? He cultivated a new set of seeds. Within a few years, he became the owner of the largest farm in his community and its environs. What lesson can we learn from this? We cannot change our nation if we don’t sow new seeds- thoughts and perception about Nigeria; these seeds will grow into a NEW NIGERIA because our land is very fertile. Maybe you don’t even know that the future of Nigeria lies within us, it’s in our able hands. YES, YOU and I!
How do we achieve the Nigeria we desire? The answer is not farfetched. The solution is REVOLUTION OF OUR MINDS. Remember, our mind is the seat of power. It determines who we are and what we do. There is no innovation/event that takes place without being created and nurtured in the mind. Simply put, REVOLUTION OF MIND is the education of the mind. Begin to do things in the right way without any form of favoritism/bias. For the next few weeks, I will be sharing certain ideas on how to achieve and sustain the much needed REVOLUTION OF MIND. They are called “The 7 CORE VALUES”, and I’m sure you will be a better person after reading and digesting them promptly.
We must appreciate the efforts of Fela Durotoye’s GEMSTONE Nation Building Project, Sam Adeyemi Coaching School, The FUTURE Project, Hope Rising Foundation (HRF) NIGERIA and others. You know what! YOU must be involved in Nation Building too; it should not be left to only a few set of people because it’s our collective responsibility. You can start NOW by sharing this article with others on every social network and effect change. We are AMBASSADORS OF CHANGE, YES we are!

Literature / How Far Do You See With Your 'inner Eye'? by KOPHO125: 12:18pm On Aug 26, 2013
Dear reader, I have good news for you today. Make sure you read and digest this article because I’m sure it will awaken the sleeping ‘giant’ in you. But, hold on! Don’t keep this to yourself, share with friends and people around you. These days, many youths have gone astray- they have allowed their ‘today’ to blindfold ‘tomorrow’. While some want to ride the most expensive cars in a jiffy, others want to become millionaires overnight. It doesn’t work that way, please tell them! Be the change agent that the world has been waiting for.
What you think in the deepest zone of your mind is what you see with your ‘inner eye’ and whatever you see with it is what you are in reality. With your ‘inner eye’, you can see yourself being given standing ovations, awards in the year 2018. Yet, this is 2013. Do not undervalue how far you can see with your ‘inner eye’. Begin to make use of it today; it will pave the way for you. If you see yourself as someone who is born to be great in life; someone who will succeed irrespective of the family background or the challenges of life, you will definitely make it in life because you are what you think. Some people see themselves as failure, poverty, and mediocrity. Tell me, how on earth will they succeed?
Let’s consider this. When God created the world, he didn’t provide electricity, paper, aero plane, internet, Facebook, Blackberry, and GSM. You must be wondering why. The reason is simple. He expects us to complete the constructions which he started by making use of the asset he has given us i.e. creative mind. Thomas Edison saw microphone and light bulb with his ‘inner eye’, he created them and then, we use them today. The Wright brothers saw human beings flying in the sky, they developed the dream and today, we travel around the world by aeroplanes. There is no human being without a potential. All these show that the world is waiting for YOU to take its shape and that was why God created you. There are problems in your locality, school, place of work, state and nation that need urgent solutions; create these solutions and become a superstar. Come to think of it, there is SOMETHING you do perfectly well, nobody does it better than you. Please, work on it because it’s a road sign that leads to the Promised Land.

The great speaker from Bahamas, Dr Myles Munroe talked about human potentials and purpose in life. Check it out here:
“The WEALTHIEST SPOT on this planet is not the oil fields of Kuwait, Iraq, or Saudi Arabia. Neither is it the gold and diamond mines of South Africa, the uranium mines of the Soviet Union, or the silver mines of Africa. Though it may surprise you, the richest deposits on our planet lie just a few blocks from your house. They rest in your LOCAL CEMETERY OR GRAVEYARD”. Uhm mmm, then, what are these deposits?
He continued: “Buried beneath the soil within the walls of those sacred grounds are dreams that never came to pass, songs that were never sung, books that were never written, paintings that never filled a canvas, ideas that were never shared, visions that never became reality, inventions that were never designed, plans that never went beyond the drawing board of the mind, and purposes that were never fulfilled. One of the greatest tragedies in life is to watch potential die untapped. Only a small percentage of the 7 billion people on this planet will experience a significant portion of their true potential. Are you a candidate for contributing to the wealth of cemetery?” Finally, please take note of this: Don’t go to the grave with your treasure within you. You must leave empty!

Health / HRF HEALTH ANGLE: The 'trial'of Toilet Disease by KOPHO125: 12:12pm On Aug 26, 2013
“To my knowledge, no one has ever acquired Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) on the toilet seat unless they were having sex on the toilet seat!”- Pres, American Society for Microbiology.
Lady MH, a 21 year 200L student in a Nigerian university, shared her experience. She said: “Toilet Disease is very embarrassing. Few hours after using the toilet reserved for my floor in the hostel, I started feeling this strange itching in my ‘womanhood’; It wasn’t funny at all. I wish I never contacted it, but it was due to my ignorance as a fresher at that time. Thank God for timely medical intervention”
What is “Toilet Disease”?
It does not have an internationally acceptable definition simply because, uhmm, guess what!, it doesn’t exist. Don’t be shocked! Although, you can contract certain infections from toilet seats, flush handle, water faucet handle and even, doorknobs if they are not kept clean. This is expected. Imagine you drinking water from a dirty cup that has been used for serving many people without being washed. How does it sound? The same rule applies to toilet seats. However, you cannot contract Sexually Transmitted Infections like Gonorrhea, Syphilis, herpes, HIV, HPV etc as widely believed. Ladies are mostly affected because the ‘design’ of their genitourinary system makes them more prone to infections. A recent study showed that “only 35% of men wash their hands after using a public bathroom. Women were twice as likely to wash, up at 65%”
What are the sources of these infections?
They result mostly from certain bacteria or fungi which could be present on the toilet seats and other places in the toilet/bathroom. Specifically, Candidiasis (caused by some fungi) could be gotten from wearing dirty and/or wet underwears especially when they are silk/nylon; wearing of extremely tight-fitting pants.
The Symptoms
• Vaginal and Labial Itching
• Abnormal vaginal discharge
• Pain with intercourse
• Painful urination
• Redness and swelling of the vulva etc.
Diagnosis and Tests
The doctor will ask for your sexual history, current signs and symptoms, and some tests might be carried out depending on the outcome of examination. Don’t be scared. Hun!
Treatment
• Appropriate drugs to cure the infection will be given by the doctor.
• Advice on good personal hygiene and healthy lifestyle.
• Practice of safe sex.
• Regular and Prompt medical check up is very essential.
Prevention Tips
• Practice safe sex
• Ensure that your toilet is always clean. However, if you are to use a public or ‘strange’ toilet, use tissue to wipe/cover the seat before use.
• Wash your hands with soap and water after using the toilet.
• Avoid wearing extremely tight-fitting pants or shorts which may cause irritation.
• Wear clean, dry cotton underwear.
• Keep your genital area clean and dry.Avoid soap and rinse with water only; Sitting in a warm but not hot, bath may help.
• Avoid douching.
• Avoid using feminine hygiene sprays, fragrant or powders in the genital area.

…….and then, men! Don’t think you are totally free especially when you flirt around. You can actually contact those infections through sex. So, ensure you share this article with all the ladies in your life- wives, fiancée, girlfriends, sisters, cousins, aunts and then, concubines if you have any *winks.
EDUCATE YOUR NEIGHBOUR, SAVE A LIFE TODAY!

Literature / What Choice Have You Made? by KOPHO125: 7:37pm On Aug 03, 2013
Part One
Widely speaking, there are two categories of people in the world.
1. Those who rule their world
2. Those who are ruled by their world
Let’s consider those in the first category. Those in this category rule their world because they have discovered that they are in possession of WEAPONS with which they can subdue their world. What are these weapons? They are called talents. To some, they are gifts, endowments. And to others, they are called potentials. Irrespective of the names given to them, they are all weapons. Those that rule their world discovered, nourished, refined, established and utilized these weapons effectively. I want you to know that all the above processes do not take place in a single day; it’s a lifetime project. How soon all these processes can be carried out depends on YOU. Did you just say “ME”? Yes. I’m talking to YOU. It all depends on your level of Readiness, Self-determination, Diligence and Faith. Remember, we were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
In the world of music, Cobhams Asuquo, Bob Marley, Bukola Elemide (Asha), P Square are well known for their exceptional competence. Nigerians are very proud of Basketmouth, Seyi Law, Alfa Sule crew in the comedy industry. Lionel Messi, Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps are wizards in sports. Olu Jacob is no doubt an all-time Nollywood icon. We can’t forget the world renowned giant writers- Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Chimamanda Adichie. Myles Munroe, Fela Durotoye, Sam Adeyemi motivate generations and talk people to success. Dr Ben Carson’s name is well engraved on the adorable rock of history as far as modern medicine is concerned. In the fashion world, Tara Fela-Durotoye rules conveniently.
Those who rule their world have a COMMON ATTRIBUTE and this singles them out from others. What is this attribute? It is called uniqueness i.e. an ability to do things in a way it has never been done in the past. If you must make a difference in whatever career you have chosen, then, you must try as much as possible to be unique. To be unique, you must be able to overcome impossibilities, mediocrity, fear, apathy, and failure amongst others so that you can rule your world and therefore not ruled by your world.
Do you want to rule your world or you want to be ruled by your world? It’s left to YOU! Keep the hope alive!

Health / The Nigerian Healthcare System; Awful Or Awesome? by KOPHO125: 7:26pm On Aug 03, 2013
Are Nigerian Hospitals truly what they are meant to be?
I have always pondered, and searched endlessly over the years for the reason(s) why the answer to the question above is NO. A few years ago, I was filled with so much enthusiasm to attend my first hospital ward round (then as a clinical student). On entering the wards, I couldn’t withstand what I saw and the kind of odours I perceived. In the twinkling of an eye, thousands of thoughts were running through my mind, and then, a question ensued; ‘is it a crime to be created as a Nigerian? The pitiful state of these patients left me helpless and hopeless. My curiosity was intensified by my experiences over the years- a very surprising and heart-breaking one.
Let me share one of such with you. Two years ago, I attended a public lecture on Nigerian Healthcare reform in which Dr Mike Egboh, the National Programme Director of PATHS (Partnership for the Transforming Health System), was the guest speaker. In the course of the lecture, he was able to shed light on the current state of our healthcare system. At that point, I realised that what I seemed to have experienced was just a tip of the iceberg, I was dazed! Suddenly, the agony that ate me up that moment is comparable to what a mother experiences when seeing her child suffer. The climax of the event was the display of a video. The video showed ugly scenes of some Nigerians with health challenges seeking- but couldn’t get- the necessary medical attention. We were made to understand that some of them later died. I learnt that the former President (Late Umaru Musa Yar’adua) wept profusely in the Aso Villa after watching this video having been shocked by the health ‘status’ of the common citizens. You can imagine how horrible our healthcare system is. By the time the lecture came to an end, it could not be likened to any event other than a funeral; everybody, including myself, looked so much dejected.
The hospital is meant to be a place of succour for the citizen-turned-patients and clients. But what operates in our own hospitals contradicts this. The much dreaded “Nigerian hospitals” send jitter down the spine of the citizens; we have all lost confidence in the system. It’s so bad that a lot of people prefer to ‘manage’ themselves at home and then face the consequences if things go the other way- even death. On several occasions, I see young, promising youths- with great potentials- who have been bed-ridden, battered with emotional imbalances about their state of health in the ward; they are not even sure if they would ever ‘recover’. What about those valuable citizens who deserve to live but rather die because of our poor healthcare system? It’s a pity that the pain I feel at the sight of these ugly incidents could not be well conveyed in this short piece of writing. You will see the picture more clearly if you are a health worker, patient or patient relative in any of the Nigerian hospitals- especially those owned by the government.
You will find it almost unbelievable that some patient relatives (who have already been traumatized by the status of their parents/grandparents, siblings, children, uncles/aunties coupled with the undue high cost of medical services) sleep in the open, unprotected hospital premises where they are susceptible to harsh weather conditions and its associated dangers.
The cost of some very essential diagnostic medical equipment like Computed Tomography (CT scan), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is so high that some patients ‘give up’ on them. Imagine telling an average citizen of the country in which over 70% of the citizens live on less than $2US per day to pay between N30, 000 to N100, 000 for a test that does not guarantee the recovery of such a person. You can always predict what their disposition would be towards this. What about the cost of bed space, drugs, other tests and treatment, feeding? We have forgotten so soon that the day we cease to care for one another is the end of humanity!
We can’t even boast of state-of-the-art equipment in our hospitals in the 21st century. Our health statistics are shocking. Reading some of them gives me heartache. For example, Nigeria Health Service is ranked 51 out of 53 in Africa; Nigeria has the second highest maternal mortality rate (death of a woman as a result of childbearing) in the whole world; Nigeria is one of the only three countries with poliomyelitis (an infectious disease that paralyses mostly children) in the world.
Having said all of these, the question is: Who are those to be blamed for this sorry state of the Nigerian Healthcare System?

Literature / “who Killed Miss Tina Owolabi”? by KOPHO125: 9:04pm On Jul 30, 2013
At about 2.30pm on Monday, 10th December, 2012, the dreams of a young promising lady collapsed like a pack of cards. Miss Tina Owolabi, a very lively and intelligent damsel known for her sparkling smiles, had spent 6 weeks on the hospital bed without improved ‘clinical status’ having struggled with every fibre of her being to stay alive. Eventually, she succumbed.
The trim-figured, 5ft 6inches tall, fair-complexioned lady had started her day with her usual excitement; this time around, her excitement heightened by the news of her admission to study law (her dream course) at the university. At about 11am on 16th October, 2012, she reported a sudden feeling of headache and fever. She was then taken to a nearby chemist where she was given drugs to relieve her headache. However, Tina was rushed to a private hospital ten days later because there was no significant improvement in her condition. There, she was ‘diagnosed’ of malaria and bombarded with drips and drugs for a week. By this time, her condition had worsened- her head had become swollen, the right arm and leg could not be lifted and she had lost the ability to speak.
“Tina slipped and fell two weeks ago while trying to lift a bucket of water she fetched from the well. She hit her head against the concrete built around the well in the process”- Mr Daniel Owolabi, Tina’s dad, said.
Amidst anxiety, confusion and a quest for some cure, Miss Tina was transferred to a Teaching Hospital. There, she was placed under review by several clinical units while tests were being conducted. “Her ESR, WBC, CRP counts are all on the high side, this is suggestive of infection”, one of the doctors said. The imaging of her brain via CT scan was required and the Owolabis struggled to get the N40, 000 required for the scan but all their efforts proved abortive. Finally, a Good Samaritan (whose identity I must protect) came to their rescue. The imaging procedure was then scheduled to take place on November 28, 2012. In Nigeria, not many hospitals are equipped with such medical facilities and where available, serve too many patients beyond their capabilities. Just before noon on the day the test was to be carried out, a very shocking event took place; the scanning machines broke down. “We hope to fix the machines in the next 2-3 weeks”, the Head of the hospital’s Radiology Department said.
Tina’s usual exuberance had been reduced to forced smiles every now and then. She looked like an aged woman; her right arm and leg were looking very lean and bed sores had eaten deep into her buttocks and heel. “Is this the same Tina I used to know, I can’t believe this”, an old friend exclaimed. She had suffered so much pain and depression in the face of poor healthcare delivery. The nurses did not comply with wound dressing instructions and times for drug administration. She was also not regular on physiotherapy (seen an insufficient two times a week). Mrs Nnena Owolabi, Tina’s mum, said most of the nurses and doctors turned deaf ears to almost all their complaints/requests claiming they were busy. “The nurses are supposed to be the closest to us in the ward but they are so wicked and unconcerned. Different doctors would come to talk and talk for hours and use her for teachings without any real benefit to us”, she lamented in tears.
On December 10, 2012, the worst hit the Owolabis. Tina developed fever and became restless. This was barely 40 minutes after she was given the ‘afternoon session’ of her drugs. She started shaking vigorously and was seen gasping for breath. “….help, help, help”, her mother screamed. The nurses and doctors began the ‘ill-timed’ resuscitation. Tina was dead! It was less than 48 hours to her 20th birthday.
N.B: Please note that the names and dates in the incident above have been altered.
Who are those to be blamed for this sorry state of our healthcare system? The answer is simple. It is EVERYBODY! From all the tiers of government to the management of various hospitals, all health professionals, and even the citizens. Let’s take a closer look. Tina could have made it if she had been taken to the hospital earlier by her parents. Don’t you think she could have survived if a proper diagnosis had been established? Maybe she could have grown up to become a very vibrant Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) if the government/management of hospitals has made our hospitals first-rate. Probably, Tina’s dream to become the first female Nigerian president could have been a reality if not for the care-free attitude of our health professionals! When her father was contacted in January 2013, he said “Dec. 10, 2012 was the darkest moment of my life; it’s still like a dream to me”. She continued: “I can’t imagine losing such a very promising girl because of our poor Healthcare System, may God help this nation”.
We all remember how the illustrious lawyer and human right activist, Gani Fawehinmi died as a result of wrong diagnosis. With tears running down her cheeks, Dr Joe-Okei Odumakin (National President, Campaign for Democracy) said: “I have known Gani for over two decades; he is a great life-wire in the human rights anti-democracy movement. He was not properly diagnosed and was being treated for pneumonia; because of that, the cancerous effect ate him up. It is a shame for this country”. I have also read true life stories- published in newspapers- in which patients complain of wrong diagnosis, bad staff attitude, long queues and delayed surgeries (years in some cases). Some of them that attend teaching hospitals complain that they don’t get proper care from the consultants/senior staffs who don’t resume work until 10.30-11am on clinic days. One of the dejected patients was reported to have said this: “I was first diagnosed of immature cataract, later; they said there was nothing in my eyes and I was sent to another private lab. But the two test results are yet to be interpreted by consultant”. A few years ago, one of my friends narrated his ordeal when he checked into the health centre of the university he attends to complain of the pain he was feeling in his stomach; he was given the ‘routine’ Paracetamol, Vitamin C, and Bcomplex with a sub-standard antimalarial drug. We later learnt from grapevine sources that the ‘standard’ antimalarial drugs made available by the government have been taken to the private pharmacies of some ‘Ogas at the top’. Isn’t that awful? …..hummmm…..That’s all!
Is the Nigerian Healthcare System ever going to be AWESOME? YES, it shall. I’m much more hopeful than ever about this; I look forward eagerly to that time when the world would come to our shores to receive the best care. It’s just a matter of time. But hold on, what are the road signs that will take us to the promise land?
