Career / Why Qualified Candidates Don’t Get Hired by krestup: 7:18am On Jul 09, 2013
Recently I read Liz Ryan’s article Why Qualified Candidates Don’t Get Hired?, which has a lot of great information that I am in total agreement with. But for me it focused more on why qualified candidates are not being sourced or applying for certain jobs, thus they are not getting to the interview stage. These are all very important factors that job seekers need to take to heart.

But what about the qualified candidates who got to the interview stage, why are they not getting hired? This is a serious problem, especially for older job seekers and people in locales where coveted jobs are few and far between.

Competition is one reason; after all (in most cases) only 1 out of 5 or more qualified candidates interviewed can be hired. But why is it that out of those interviewed the most qualified candidate is not always or at least 9 out of 10 times the one offered the job?

The answer is simple – They lacked the ‘Likability Factor’ and the company hired a person they liked better. Some people call this a matter of chemistry and others a better cultural fit, but the bottom line is personality trumped talent!

So what is this ‘Likability Factor’ and what can job hunters do to acquire it.

It starts with the resume. Most resumes focus solely on showing how qualified a person is. Don’t get me wrong, this is an important factor but in the end other resumes in the hopper are from equally qualified candidates thus making it hard for a talent acquisition specialist to discern who to reach out to, interview or pass on. Consequently quality candidates fail to win the numbers game.

For me a resume should focus on the likability factor and this can be done by telling a story about a likable person through the use of the proper words placed in the proper place along with the accomplishments, experience and other factors that show value to the employer. To accomplish this the writer needs to understand who they are writing for and how to match the resume to the desired chemistry and cultural fit the company is looking for. When done right, this resume will create a first impression of a person interviewers look forward to meeting because they have ‘the right stuff’ to fit into the company and work with the rest of the people in the organization. After all this is the final determining factor in most hires.

Next is your physical first appearance, and here I am not talking about good looks. Have you dressed the part to make the people who are deciding your fate take notice about how well you blend in? This is an important factor and one that some people tend to overlook. Before you walk through the door you need to research the company’s culture and how to ‘look’ like you fit in. If you blend in interviewers are more likely to like you and if you look out of place chances are they will not.

Then there is the initial greeting and handshake. I can’t tell you how many times I interviewed a person who gave me a limp handshake, no smile or a bored look, and bombarded me with smoker’s breath; three strikes against them before we even sat down for the interview. No matter how qualified they were for the job, these were people I did not want to have around unless there was no other choice. These deselects were easily correctable, but the attitude of the candidate was not to make the physical or mental effort to correct them and they ended up paying the price.

William Knegendorf a consultant, speaker and author on hiring strategies for individuals and organizations shared this statistic with me. While surveying 327 Hiring Mangers on how long it takes (on average) for them to decide NO to hiring an applicant after the beginning of an interview, his data showed an average time to rejection of 4 to less than 10 seconds. And what did the hiring managers he surveyed say was the cause of their rush to judgment? “I didn’t like them.” Skills or talent was never mentioned.

Personally, I can’t begin to tell you how often I heard “It didn’t go so well, I don’t know why but I don’t think they liked me” as the response when I debriefed a candidate after an initial job interview. Rarely did they say “It didn’t go so well because I don’t think I was qualified for the job.”

When I asked client wjo interviewed them for their feedback on these same candidates this is a sample of what I was told about why they passed on them.

I didn’t like him; he was too talkative, arrogant, self-serving, self-centered or condescending. I passed on him because I thought he came across as a phony or a posterior kisser.

Some other reasons truly talented people are not hired are because they come across as too much of a liar or braggart – two more qualities people abhor – by overstating who they are and what they’ve achieved, while others blow it by showing a lack of interest for the job they’re interviewing for or by telling the interviewer what’s wrong with the company or the job rather than what’s right about it.

A most important fact many job seekers fail to understand which can diminish the chances to be hired is showing a lack of respect for the person who is interviewing them. This is especially so if they are more junior or at a somewhat lower rung on the org chart than the person being interviewed. Too many people forget that they would not be interviewing you if their opinion did not carry some weight on whether to pass you upstream or make an offer to you. This is especially true in companies who make a decision on who to hire by consensus and each opinion carries an almost equal weight.

These are but a few reasons ‘why qualified candidates don’t get hired’. I can’t say this enough times, so I’ll repeat it again. Candidates need to pass the chemistry and culture tests as well as the skills test to be hired because in the end “people hire people’, and personality will usually trump talent and experience.
Career / What Every Hiring Manager Needs To Hear In A Job Interview by krestup: 7:04am On Jul 09, 2013
Interview Hiring Manager Most recent grads applying for their first jobs don’t understand why those jobs actually exist. If you want to get the attention of a hiring manager, you need to think this through from his or her point of view. Keep these following two thoughts in mind and any hiring manager will see in you a degree of professional awareness that few of your peers possess.

Understand why companies exist

Companies exist to make money, as quickly, efficiently, and reliably as possible. Companies make money by selling a product or service. They prosper by becoming better and more efficient at it. When a company saves time, it saves money, and then has more time to make more money – this is called productivity.

If a company can make money without employees, it will do so, because that means more money for the owners. Unfortunately for the owners, a company requires a complex machinery to deliver those products and services that bring in revenue. Every job is a small but important cog in a complex moneymaking machine, and every cog has to mesh with other cogs. The cogs also have to be oiled (salary) and maintained (vacations, benefits). This all costs money; payroll and benefits are generally thought to account for by far the largest slice of a company’s income. If a company can redesign the machinery to do without that cog (automation) or can find a cheaper cog (outsourcing oversees), of course it is going to do so.

Get inside your customer’s head

Understand your customers and find out what they want to buy. There are two reasons jobs exist. First, as I’ve said, every job is a small but important cog in the corporation’s complex money-making machine. Second, the company hasn’t been able to automate that job out of existence because in your area of technical expertise, problems arise.

Consequently, the company hires someone who has the technical skills to solve these problems when they occur and who knows the territory well enough to predict and prevent many of these problems from arising in the first place. It doesn’t matter what your job title is; you are always hired to be a problem-solver with a specific area of expertise. It is why your job exists and what you are there to do: anticipate, prevent and solve the problems that get in the way of helping your department do its job in contributing to company profitability.

Think of all the summer jobs you’ve held. Whatever the job, it always comes down to anticipating, preventing, and solving problems. This enables the company to make money for the owners as quickly, efficiently, and reliably as possible. School didn’t work like this, but the professional world does: anticipate, prevent and solve problems for your manager and everyone comes out ahead.

Critical thinking, or problem solving, is one of a set of specific transferable skills and professional values that help successful professionals execute their responsibilities well, whatever their profession or challenge facing them. When that hiring manager is looking to hire someone, her goal will be to find a candidate who understands why the job exists, the problems it exists to solve and how the person in that job helps contribute to the bottom line. Your technical skills may help get you an interview, but if you want to set off light bulbs in the interviewer’s head and get that offer, you must show that, unlike your peers, you understand the small but important role your job plays in helping the company profitability.

Career / 9 Ways To Increase Your Chance Of Getting A Job by krestup: 11:24am On Jul 06, 2013
1. The number one thing you must know is to get the necessary skills and knowledge needed for the kind of job you are seeking for, because it will be a shame to get a job and not be able to function due to lack of knowledge.

2. Prepare a good CV that will portrait in detail all your various educational qualification, skills, work experiences and work history also know that every employer is looking for that uniqueness in an applicant that it’s not just outstanding but perfect for what they want.

3. Having a good referee in your CV will go a long way in getting you approved by HR. you must take your time and get the most reputable individuals in your society, government and previous company you worked for, and they should be able to write a letter of support to vouch for you.

4. One other thing is to prepare a resume that will align with the type of job you are applying for, because every job have what is specifically needed from the applicant that can fit into that position. It must be exactly what they need, anything other than that you don’t stand a chance.

5. Your cover letter should be outstanding when “blowing your trumpet”, for this is the only document that you have the right to talk about yourself to an employer. When applying through an email ensure you include your cover letter details in the body of your email, but if through physical submission of document you can do it separately.

6. Ensure you address and submit your application to the HR department which is responsible for recruitment of new employee excerpt they state otherwise in their advertisement.

7. It’s advisable to always check all media system where they place job vacancy regularly. Register with the newsletter of website that are into job advertisement so that you will get recent update of job vacancy, ensure to indicate the type of jobs you are interested in to avoid being sent ads that are not relevant to you.

8. Try to dedicate enough time towards the searching of jobs on all media because your chance of getting a job largely depends on it.

9. Take the initiative of sending a follow-up email to the company at least a week after you submitted your application. This will create a serious impression of you in their mind in the midst of the multitude application sent to them.

The idea is more important than the money, because even if you have the money and no idea, your money would just be sitting where it is. Steve Jobs, Google guys, Facebook all started with an idea before they got financial backing. So you must believe in what you want to do.
Other important thing is networking, because networking is the key to quick success. Knowing the right people to contact would go a long way in helping you. I think that is something these men know how to do.....

Orikinla: GTB is a front for some ogas at the top who are ex-military dictators.
Did you ask where those who floated these new generation banks got the capital?

Even if it was the ex military dictators that has the money(am not saying it was them because i can verify it), but these me had the idea, they saw the opportunity. They took advantage of it. For me Even Mike Adenuga did the same thing.. It not about the school you attended but how well you can look for opportunities and take advantage of it.. Although there education gave them an advantage on how to manage the system. They were also expose to the western world, because the is a developed society and looking @ Nigeria it is till a developing nation. So they are still a lot opportunities, only if you could open your eyes to see.....

Meanwhile they told us that we hav health insurance during our orentation exercise, my service yr ended in june 2013 being last month but frm nov 2012 they stop giving us free treatment if u ask them, they will tell u that nysc have nt paid the health insurance fee. We spent our little and hard earnd allawee in buying drugs while serving our so called fatherland for those of us that served where the need is greater if u knw what i mean (north). Thank God we conquerd!

NYSC health insurance scheme has been stop because they claim the health institution gave them outrageous bills. So what they do now is when you go the the hospital for treatment you would bear the cost for your treatment. You would write an application for reimbursement with your receipt for payment. They would reimburse you.. That's how the system work now... No more NYSC health insurance scheme.

Interviews are one of the hiring tools available to employers, used extensively to judge how appropriate a prospective candidate to fill a role with an organization.

*The Interview provides an opportunity to meet several candidates and screen them to find the ones most suitable for the organization.

*It helps to evaluate a person's skills, capabilities and personality trait.

*Provides tremendous insight into a candidate's confidence level and ability to handle a pressure situation.

* A chance to communicate the Company's policies, beliefs, work culture and expectations from the prospective employee.

* Finally, it helps narrow down, select and hire the best talent to fill the job vacancy. This should ideally be a person who is focused, skilled, confident and excited.

That's why its important for you to get prepared before you go for any interview, so as you can be able to meet your future expectation.

Preparation is the key to any interview and lots of people don’t realise this. You wouldn’t go to pitch a new client without any preparation would you? Interviewing for a job is just the same. There are something you need to do, so you won't be caught unaware. making sure the hiring manager knows why you're a good match, researching the company, practice interviewing, what to wear and what to bring to the interview, how to impress during the interview. The fact is this, as tough as an interview is there are ways to prepare yourself physically and mentally for it.

dotobo:

Krestup, thank for the reply.

To be honest, I sincerely feel I can go deep in atmost two areas:

1) Computer programming (Or anything that has to do with internet).

2) An effective business person, good team player.

None of the above do I have any formal training for. And I'm thinking if I could just get on with the business side of my capabilities and keep doing the computer stuff on my on, then that might be a good one.

What do you think sir ?

Of course you can keep doing your computer stuff and business. You could even turn your computer stuff into a business. In areas you are not skilled, you can hire someone, so that you can be working a balance environment.

Career / Re: Advice On Career Path To Build Upon. by krestup: 8:28am On Jan 12, 2013
dotobo, what i think is that you want to be a jack of all trade, although it's good because no knowledge is a waste. But i think you should do is ask yourself this question.

1. What i am doing now, is it something i would like to do for the rest of my life? (if you answer is yes, continue developing yourself in that area but if your answer is NO, then ask yourself question 2)

2. What is that thing you would like to spend the rest of your life doing?

A career is just like marriage union because it require a long term commitment. So if you are not passionate about what you want to do or become then you won't have enough motivation to drive you to the end. Also when you are trying to answer question 2, access your strength, weakness, values, interests, personality and skill. This could help put you on a career to build.

From what i have notice in the working environment is that its not about how well you do what you do but sometimes by the relationship you create. If you are working under a boss that don't see anything good in what you do, it will be difficult for you to be motivated or enjoy what you do because you will always be feeling like you are under pressure. Although its still possible to work under a bad boss and be successful and happy but in that case you will learn not to take into account the wrongs or the pressure he is putting you, instead try and see it from the positive side.
