Health / Healthy Diet Could Prevent Asthma by Kweenuwa: 12:16pm On Jul 16, 2018
Healthy diet could prevent asthma. Healthy diet high in fruit, vegetable and whole grain cereal could prevent asthma. This diet contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which could lower symptoms of asthma.

In contrast consumption of meat, salt and sugar worsen symptoms of asthma.

The President of Nigerian Thoracic Society (NTS), Prof. Etete Peters, has said that about 15 million of the country's population are suffering from asthma, adding that over 400 million people are asthmatic worldwide.

ALSO READ : Eating fast food like hot dogs, burgers raises risk of severe asthma

Explaining Asthma

Asthma causes the small tubes inside the lungs to swell and makes it harder to breath.

It is incurable, Affecting people of all ages and often starts in childhood.

Symptoms

Patients with asthma show the following symptoms:

Wheezing
Coughing
Breathlessness
Tight chest
An asthma attack happens when symptoms suddenly get worse.

The Research

A total of 34,776 French adults were studied using questionnaires – 28 per cent of the women and 25 per cent of the men had asthma.

To assess the effects of asthma people were asked to answer questions about their symptoms over a one-month period.

People's diet was measured using a daily food diary from which researchers randomly selected three days per person.

Diets high in fruit, vegetable and whole grain cereal are considered healthy, while meat, salt and sugar are less healthy.

The researchers took into account other factors known to be linked to asthma, such as smoking and exercise.

ALSO READ : Asthma; causes, symptoms, treament, complications.

The Result

They found men who eat a healthy diet have a 30 per cent lower chance of experiencing the symptoms of asthma, while women's risk is slashed by 20 per cent.

And men who already have asthma are 60 per cent less likely to have badly controlled symptoms if they eat healthily, while eating well reduces asthmatic women's symptoms by 27 per cent.

Lead researcher Dr Roland Andrianasolo said: 'Our results strongly encourage the promotion of healthy diets for preventing asthma symptoms and managing the disease.

'A healthy diet is mostly made up of a high intake of fruit, vegetables and fibre.

'These have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and are elements in a healthy diet that potentially lower symptoms.

'In contrast, the least healthy diets include high consumption of meat, salt and sugar, and these are elements with pro-inflammatory capacities that may potentially worsen symptoms of asthma.

Health / Health Impacts Of Medical Marijuana by Kweenuwa: 10:26am On Jul 16, 2018
Medical marijuana or Medical cannabis is not fully accepted in many parts of the world. Recently the health impacts of medical marijuana is raving as a new survey, reported it reduced pain and decreased the need for opioid painkillers.

Medical cannabis are forms of cannabis recommended by doctors to the patients. Research have shown that cannabis is valuble in treating chronic pains, stimulates appetite, nausea, weight loss, and can be used to treat glaucoma, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn's disease.

Another patient put it this way: "It [medical marijuana] is extremely effective and has allowed me to function in my work and life again. It has not completely taken away the pain, but allows me to manage it."

Study co-author Dr. Diana Martins-Welch said, "The impact of medical marijuana was overwhelmingly positive. Medical marijuana led them to taking less medications overall -- opioids and non-opioids -- and they had better function and better quality of life." Martins-Welch is a physician in the division of geriatric and palliative medicine at Northwell Health, in Great Neck, N.Y.

The biggest complaint the researchers heard about medical marijuana was the cost. "It's an out-of-pocket expense. Insurance doesn't cover it because it's federally illegal," Martins-Welch explained.

As for unwelcome side effects, Martins-Welch said sedation was what she heard about the most. "A lot of people don't like feeling sleepy," she said.

It's also important to work with your doctor to find the right dose, since pain experts say that too little or too much doesn't ease pain.

"Every state has its own laws, like what a qualifying condition is. There are a lot of differences. And you can't take a product from one state and cross another state line," Martins-Welch said.
Medical marijuana is different than just picking up some pot and smoking it.

The Study

The study included a 20-question survey of nearly 150 seniors who had used medical marijuana for chronic pain. The seniors had received their medical marijuana from dispensaries in New York or Minnesota.

The average age of the seniors was 61 to 70, and 54 percent were female. Many (45 percent) used a vaporized oil in an e-cigarette device. Twenty-eight percent used a medical marijuana pill.

Twenty-one percent said they used medical marijuana daily, while 23 percent said they used it twice a day. Another 39 percent said they used it more than twice a day, the researchers noted.

"The goal with medical marijuana is to find the dose that gives a therapeutic benefit without a high, or slowing reaction time or causing sedation," Martins-Welch said. "To find that right dose, we start low and go slow."

In fact, it's important to work with a doctor because there's a "therapeutic window" with THC, the active component in marijuana that causes the high, according to Dr. Mark Wallace, a board member of the American Pain Society.

If you get a dose that's within that window, the pain is relieved. If you get too little, you won't get pain relief, and if you go over the therapeutic window, pain is actually worsened, Wallace explained.

Health / How The Sex Of Your Baby Predict Pregnancy Complications by Kweenuwa: 6:56pm On Jul 13, 2018
How the sex of your baby predict pregnancy complications. The researchers also found the form of spermine higher in mothers pregnant with a girl was also predictive of the risk of pregnancy complications.

Mothers-to-be carrying girls have higher levels of the substance, while their counts are much lower if they are expecting a boy.

High levels were associated with an increased risk of pre-eclampsia, whereas low levels were linked with an increased risk of poor foetal growth.

The patterns observed were all consistent with an array of studies which have shown that boys may be more vulnerable to the effects of foetal growth restriction.

While other trials have revealed that being pregnant with a girl may lead to an increased risk of severe pre-eclampsia.

Researchers analysed placental and maternal blood samples from around 4,000 first-time mothers to make the conclusion.

Professor Gordon Smith, who led the study, said: 'In pregnancy and childbirth, the sex of the baby is at the forefront of many parents' minds.

'But we do not even think of the placenta as having a sex. This work shows that the placenta differs profoundly according to sex.

'These differences alter elements of the composition of the mother's blood and may even modify her risk of pregnancy complications.

'Better understanding of these differences could lead to new predictive tests and possibly even new approaches to reducing the risk of poor pregnancy outcome.'

Health / Writing Positive Emotions Have A Good Effect On Mental Health by Kweenuwa: 5:51pm On Jul 13, 2018
Writing positive emotions have a good effect on mental health as it reduces stress and anxiety, according to our new study, published in the British Journal of Health Psychology.

Earlier research has shown that writing about positive experiences for 20 minutes a day, for three consecutive days, improved people's mood and led to fewer visits to the doctor. Even writing for as little as two minutes a day about a positive experience has been shown to reduce the number of health complaints that people report.

While earlier studies showed that writing about positive experiences can improve your mood, we didn't know what effect it might have on stress and anxiety.
For our study, we investigated whether writing about a positive experience – which could include anything from being moved by a good book, painting or piece of music, to falling in love – could reduce stress, anxiety and common health complaints, such as a headache, back pain or coughs and colds. We also wanted to know if it would be helpful for all people, regardless of their level of distress.

THE STUDY

We recruited 71 healthy participants, aged 19 to 77, and randomly allocated them to one of two groups. We asked one group (37 participants) to write about the most wonderful experiences of their life for 20 minutes a day, for three consecutive days, and we asked the other group (34 participants) to write about a neutral topic, such as their plans for the rest of the day, over the same time frame.

We measured levels of anxiety, as reported by the participants, immediately before and after they completed their writing task. We found a significantly greater decrease in anxiety for those people who wrote about positive experiences, compared with those who wrote about neutral topics.

The participants also reported their levels of stress, anxiety and physical health complaints four weeks after they completed the writing tasks. Stress and anxiety decreased to a significantly greater extent for those who wrote about positive experiences after four weeks, compared with the levels reported before they completed the writing tasks. However, writing didn't improve participants' physical health problems.
We also found that writing about happy moments was effective, regardless of the levels of distress that people reported at the start of the study.

Because we excluded people with a diagnosed psychological condition, we can't be sure that this technique would work in a clinical setting. It's also important to note that in order for them to engage with the task, it wasn't possible to blind participants to the treatment. Another limitation of our study was that we relied on self-report questionnaires, rather than using objective measures of mental and physical health.

Health / People Who Smoke Are Prone To Deadly Irregular Heart Beat by Kweenuwa: 4:30pm On Jul 13, 2018
People who Smoke are prone to lethal irregular heart beat new study reveals. Atrial fibrillation is responsible for as many as 30 per cent of all life-threatening strokes. As people who smoke are 45% more likely to develop irregular Coronary heart beat.  '

"If you smoke, stop smoking and if you don't smoke, don't start" said  Study author Dr Dagfinn Aune, from Imperial College London,

'We found that smokers are at increased risk of atrial fibrillation, but the risk is reduced considerably in those who quit.'

The Study

The researchers analysed 29 research carried out in Europe, North America, Australia and Japan.

The study review had a total of 677,785 participants, of which 39,282 suffered from atrial fibrillation.

The Result

Results further suggest that all smokers are 32 per cent more likely to develop atrial fibrillation, while those who have ditched the habit still have a nine per cent higher risk.

Compared to no cigarettes, smoking five, 10, 15, 20, 25 or 29 daily raises the risk of atrial fibrillation by nine, 17, 25, 32, 39 and 45 per cent, respectively.

Dr Aune said: 'Our results provide further evidence of the health benefits of quitting smoking and, even better, to never start smoking in the first place.

'This is important from a public health perspective to prevent atrial fibrillation and many other chronic diseases.' Smoking also raises the risk of lung cancer, heart disease and pneumonia.

Health / Fair People Risk Skin Cancer by Kweenuwa: 8:52am On Jul 12, 2018
Fair people risk Skin Cancer if they don't wear clothes. Wearing sun protective clothing have been seen to reduce cancer in pale skin people.

Skin cancer affects millions of people world wide. About one in five people are diagnosed with some form of skin cancer in their lifetime.

The survey asks participants what would happen to their skin if they were out in the sun for an hour after several months of not being exposed.

Morris and colleague Frank Perna of the U.S National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland analyzed data from more than 28,000 people.

Those who said 'get a severe burn with blisters,' 'have a moderate sunburn with peeling,' or 'burn mildly with some or no tanning' were considered sun-sensitive.

Those who said 'turn darker without sunburn' or 'nothing would happen' were considered non-sun-sensitive.

The survey respondents also indicated how many times they had a sunburn in the past year and how often they used sun protection on a warm, sunny day.

The choices included sunscreen, shade, a cap or visor, a wide-brimmed hat, long sleeves, and long pants.

Most people - 77 percent - used at least one form of sun protection. Shade seeking was the most common, used by 40 percent of people. Wearing long sleeves was least common, at 16 percent.

Among the nearly 16,000 sun-sensitive respondents, those who only used sunscreen had the highest rate of sunburn, at 62 percent.

Sun-sensitive people with the lowest likelihood of sunburn didn't use sunscreen but found shade, wore a hat and wore protective clothing.

ALSO READ : How popular powder ‘talcum’ cause cancer

Among the 12,000 non-sun-sensitive respondents, those who used four protective behaviors had the lowest likelihood of sunburn, at 7 percent.

'The most surprising and counterintuitive finding was that regular sunscreen use, in the absence of other protective behaviors, was associated with the highest likelihood of sunburn,' Morris said.

When used properly, sunscreen blocks UV rays, she added. However, in a real-world setting, people may not apply enough sunscreen or as often as needed to prevent sunburn. They may also overestimate how long they can safely stay in the sun.

'This study underscores recommendations that sunscreen should not be used in isolation,' Morris said.

Health / Ties Restrict Blood Flow To The Brain, Study by Kweenuwa: 11:08am On Jul 07, 2018
Ties are often seen as standard office-wear for men, from call centers to investment banks. Tight neck ties limit blood flow to the brain as it could hamper work performance by compressing veins that are key for bloodflow to the brain, a new study warns.

The small study on 30 young men in Germany found a statistically significant drop in brain functioning among men who wore neckties during an MRI scan, with bloodflow down 7.5 percent.

The Study

While there might be no obvious symptoms, experts warn it will be enough to impact cognitive functioning.

The findings are something of an endorsement for the increasingly popular tech-bro uniform championed by Mark Zuckerberg and the late Steve Jobs, doing away with ties in favor of stretchy attire, as well as the Arabians who don't or rarely wear neckties.

Tight neckties also can limit neck movement and raise muscle tension in the upper back and neck, researchers at Korea's Yonsei University reported last year in "Work: A Journal of Prevention, Assessment and Rehabilitation." They tested 30 computer workers when wearing and not wearing tight neckties and concluded that "it is especially important for male workers to select and tie neckties appropriately" to prevent musculoskeletal injuries.

Health / Loud Snoring Could Be An Early Warning Sign For Dementia And Memory Illness by Kweenuwa: 10:03pm On Jul 05, 2018
Loud snoring could be an early warning sign for dementia and memory illness scientists say.

Obstructive sleep apnoea, which is the major cause heavy snoring have changes in the brain linked to dementia, a study found.

Professor Sharon Naismith, who led the study from the Brain and Mind Centre at Sydney University, said: ‘Our results suggest that we should be screening for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in older people.’

She added: ‘We should also be asking older patients attending sleep clinics about their memory and thinking skills and carrying out tests where necessary.
‘There is no cure for dementia so early intervention is key. On the other hand, we do have an effective treatment for OSA.

'This research shows that diagnosing and treating OSA could be an opportunity to prevent cognitive decline before it’s too late.’

The Australian researchers recruited 83 people over 50 who were concerned about memory problems to a sleep clinic.

Participants slept normally while airflow through their nose and blood oxygen levels were recorded.

Graded on an index for sleep apnoea, 63 of the 83 had a mild to severe form of the condition

The results, published in the European Respiratory Journal, show those with low levels of oxygen in their blood had reduced grey matter in their temporal lobes.

This loss of brain volume has been linked to the devastating memory loss in dementia patients

And, while the study did not look at dementia, it found that people whose brain changes showed up in MRI scans performed worse over five memory trials using lists of 15 items.

Professor Naismith said: ‘Between 30 and 50 per cent of the risk for dementia is due to modifiable factors, such as depression, high blood pressure, obesity and smoking.

Health / More Than 8million Babies Born From IVF Since Inception by Kweenuwa: 9:53am On Jul 05, 2018
More than 8million babies born from IVF since inception in 1978.

Forty years after the birth of Louise Brown, the world's first test-tube baby, an international committee monitoring progress in assisted reproduction reports today that the global total of babies born as a result of IVF and other advanced fertility treatments is "more than 8 million."

The figure, calculated from data collected from regional registries from 1991 to 2014, represent another steep rise in the cumulative use of IVF in the treatment of infertility. Estimates are that more than a half million babies are now born each year from IVF and ICSI from more than 2 million treatment cycles performed

Dr David Adamson speaking at this congress on behalf of the International Committee for Monitoring ART (ICMART) said: "Based on ICMART's annual collection of global IVF data, it is estimated that since Louise Brown's birth in 1978 over 8 Million babies have been born from IVF around the world."

"Success rates have stabilised," said ESHRE's EIM committee chairman Christian De Geyter, "although outcome in egg donation and with use of frozen embryos is still moving upwards. The biggest upwards movement, however, is from treatments with frozen eggs, which have been revolutionised by the widespread introduction of vitrification."

Also gaining ground is embryo freezing. All embryos in 15% of all treatment cycles monitored in 2015 were frozen before thawing and transfer in a subsequent cycle. Uptake of this "freeze-all" approach increased by 7% on the previous year. Freezing by vitrification would also explain the increase in egg donation treatments, no doubt made possible by egg banking and the greater availability of donor eggs.

Health / Men With Gum Disease Likely To Have Erectile Dysfunction by Kweenuwa: 7:55am On Jul 05, 2018
Men with gum disease likely to have erectile dysfunction according to new research.

The first research to be done, scientists at the University of Granada in Spain , say both conditions are linked to the same protein made in the liver.

The study

Researchers studied 158 men aged between 23 and 69, 80 of whom had erectile dysfunction, and compared rates of gum disease with the sexual problem.

And results show having gum disease, known as chronic periodontisis, gives men a 2.17 times higher chance of having erection problems.

This is a bigger factor than whether the men have diabetes or heart disease, according to the study.

Researchers found the same link in the other direction: almost three quarters of men – 74 per cent – who already have trouble in the bedroom also have gum disease.

Gum Disease

Gum disease – periodontisis – is when the tissues supporting the teeth swell and become sore or infected because of a build-up of bacteria in the mouth.

Finding blood on your toothbrush or in the toothpaste you spit out after brushing is a common symptom of the condition.

Your gums could also bleed when you eat, leaving a bad taste and odour in your mouth.

In reponse to the study, dental charity the Oral Health Foundation says the benefits of taking better care of your gums extend beyond just having a healthy mouth.

Its CEO Dr Nigel Carter said: 'As startling as these findings may be, it may turn out to be a wake-up call for men to start paying greater attention to their oral health, particularly their gums.

'In recent years, gum disease has been linked with conditions like diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

Erectile dysfunction is also a common condition and affects most men occasionally, although in some it may become a chronic problem which needs addressing.

Health / People Are Conscious When Under Anaesthetic by Kweenuwa: 8:46pm On Jul 04, 2018
People are conscious when under anaesthetic new research suggests.

The researchers analysed 47 healthy people who were given either the sedative dexmedetomidine or the general anaesthetic propofol until they were unable to respond.

Study author Antti Revonsuo, from the University of Turku, Finland, said: 'Nearly all participants reported dream-like experiences that sometimes mixed with the reality.'

While the drugs were being infused, attempts were made to rouse the participants.

Drug concentrations were then increased until the participants appeared to lose consciousness.
The participants brain waves were recorded throughout the experiment.

All the participants were also played recordings of sentences that ended unexpectedly, such as 'the night sky was filled with shimmering tomatoes', while other sound bites were completely normal.

Brain-wave results suggest people alternate between deep sleep and a higher sense of consciousness while supposedly out cold.

The brain waves of sedated people suggest they can hear unusual phrases and try to make sense of them, while those on propofol continue snoozing.

Yet when the participants were played unpleasant noises, all seemed to be paying attention. They also reacted faster to the noises when played them again when awake.

Health / Sitting Too Much? You Risk Dying Early by Kweenuwa: 10:43am On Jul 04, 2018
Sitting too much, you risk dying early even if you do regular exercises.

If you sit for six hours a day or more, your risk of dying early jumps 19 percent, compared with people who sit fewer than three hours, an American Cancer Society study suggests

And, the study authors added, sitting may kill you in 14 ways, including: cancer; heart disease; stroke ; diabetes; kidney disease ; suicide; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); lung disease ; liver disease; peptic ulcer and other digestive disease; Parkinson's disease ; Alzheimer's disease; nervous disorders; and musculoskeletal disorders.

For the study, Patel's team collected data on nearly 128,000 men and women who were part of an American Cancer Society prevention study. At the start of the study, all were free of major chronic diseases. During 21 years of follow-up, nearly 49,000 people died.

Health / Things That Occurs Inside The Operating Theatre by Kweenuwa: 6:20am On Jul 04, 2018
Television shows and movies may give the wrong impression when they portray a surgeon in a silent room asking to be handed a scalpel as a single bead of sweat runs down their forehead.

In fact, they're just as likely to be gossiping or chatting about sports or the news, The Times reports.

Surgeons and their assistants argue, flirt, throw things across the room and poke fun at their patients while they are under the knife, research has revealed.

For the study a researcher from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, sat in on 200 operations and recorded more than 6,000 conversations.

Dr Laura Jones, a medical anthropologist who studies communication and team-building among operating staff, logged 6,348 conversations during surgical procedures in the US.

She sat in on the procedures to watch how surgeons and their assistants behave at work.

Medical staff were seen throwing rubbish across the room into the bin and celebrating when it went in, dancing to music, and rubbing each other's legs flirtatiously, according to the study.

One reportedly called an unconscious patient 'gigantic' and said they would need ten people to move her.

Dr Jones's study suggests status and 'ego' is a main cause of arguments in the theatre, and they are most likely to happen when high-ranking male surgeons try to exert their dominance.

Health / The Ageing Effects Of Pollution On The Skin. by Kweenuwa: 1:35pm On Jul 03, 2018
You may be diligent about applying your anti-wrinkle creams, lotions  and staying out of the sun, but your efforts could be in vain due to the ageing effects of pollution on the skin.

And even if you don't live in a big city, indoor pollution from charcoal, wood-burning stoves, gas cookers and cleaning products can be an equally damaging culprit according to Trilogy's in-house skincare expert Corrine Morley on mailonline

'Our skin plays an important role as a barrier against pollution in the environment,' she told Femail.

'Air pollutants rob the skin cells of oxygen and encourage free radicals to form. Nitrogen dioxide, smoke, soot and carbon dioxide are very common in cities and the tiny particulates can easily infiltrate the skin barrier, penetrating to the deeper layers and causing damage.

'New evidence shows that exposure to pollution generates free radicals that can damage and age the skin in the same way as harmful UV rays from the sun do.

'Often implicated as a cause of dullness and uneven skin tone, air pollutants are sometimes found in even higher levels indoors than outside, so it’s important to protect your skin even if you’re mostly inside.

Health / Religious People Live Longer Than Non Religious - Study by Kweenuwa: 8:33am On Jun 14, 2018
Researchers have discovered a stunning correlation between longevity and spiritual religion they usually discovered that religious individuals stay longer than Non non secular.

Church-goers seem to stay as much as 4 years longer than atheists, least in line with an evaluation of 1,000 obituaries printed throughout america.

The Ohio State psychology researchers behind the research insist there may be benefit to the connection: individuals with non secular affiliations typically volunteer and have interaction in social actions all through their lives - one thing routinely tied to longer lifespan.
However they discovered that this socializing solely appeared to spice up longevity by a 12 months at most - suggesting different parts of spiritual life, equivalent to low alcohol consumption, may contribute. The Ohio State psychology researchers behind the study insist there is merit to the connection: people with religious affiliations often volunteer and engage in social activities throughout their lives - something routinely tied to longer lifespan.
But they found that this socializing only appeared to boost longevity by a year at most - suggesting other elements of religious life, such as low alcohol intake, could contribute.

'There's still a lot of the benefit of religious affiliation that this can't explain,',' examine lead writer Laura Wallace, as reported in Dailymail.

'The study provides persuasive evidence that there is a relationship between religious participation and how long a person lives,' Dr Baldwin Method, stated.

Health / JOHESU Appeal To FG For Salary by Kweenuwa: 8:39pm On Jun 13, 2018
The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) has appealed to the Federal Government to pay its members April and May salary JOHESU appeal to FG for salary in line with their agreement to suspend their strike
Mr Achimugu Isaiah, the branch Chairman, Federal Medical Centre (FMC Keffi), Nasarawa State, made the call on Wednesday while fielding questions from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) shortly after a congress meeting of the union in Keffi.
NAN recalls that JOHESU embarked on an indefinite nationwide industrial action on April 18 and resumed work on May 31.
Some of the demands made by the union included upward adjustment of salary scale, employment of additional health professionals, review of retirement age from 60 years to 65 years and implementation of court judgment.
JOHESU consists of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Medical and Health Workers Union (MHWUN) and Senior Staff Association of University Teaching Hospitals, among others.
Isaiah said that payment of two month salary to the members of the union who embarked on strike to press home their demand would cushion their economic plight.
He added it would also boost members’ morale toward effective healthcare service delivery.
The union leader queried the selective nature of paying few members against the majority.
“The strike was declared by the national body and the local chapter here only obeyed the directive of the national secretariat.
“Actually, we only called members of the union to brief them on the outcome of our meeting with the management of the centre after the suspension of the JOHESU strike by the national body of the union.
“After the suspension of the strike, we have been meeting with our management on the need for payment of April and May salary to our members but the management told us that those that were paid are those that worked during the strike.
“Such beneficiaries like the management staff, drivers and their personal assistants, among others, were paid based on directive from the federal government.
“They said that anything that was done was based on directive and they can only take our message on the payment of our April/May salary to the federal government for action.
“It is in view of this that we are pleading to the federal government to consider our presentation, the plight of workers by paying us our April/May salary in the interest of peace,” he said.
Besides, Isaiah urged the federal government to do the needful by implementing the demands of the union so as to put the issues that led to the strike to an end.
The chairman also urged the members of the union to remain calm, be law abiding and continue with their normal duties.
