Nairaland / General / Academic Union Refuses To Bow by kwenu: 2:12pm On Aug 12, 2009 |
Ukachukwu Awuzie, the president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Tuesday said the union is determined to continue with its ongoing strike. Gamaliel Onosode, the chairperson of the negotiating committee between the Federal Government and the union had on Monday called on the union to suspend its strike before further negotiations would continue. But Mr. Awuzie in a telephone interview with NEXT said, "We haven't changed our position; the strike continues." Federal government versus ASUU Mr. Awuzie, who blamed the Federal Government for the development, said ASUU is still open to negotiations if the other party is willing to proceed. "If they [the Federal Government] have contentious issues, we stated clearly on June 22 [when the strike commenced] that they should put them forward," he said. "They now say because of the ongoing strike, they can't negotiate. Even during war, people still negotiate." The union's president also accused the government of insensitivity, saying, "It's not ASUU that backed out; it's the government. The children of the government officials are overseas, and not in Nigeria, so they don't care about the children of the masses." Speaking on the state of education in the country and the reason behind the strike, Mr. Awuzie said the essence is to stop the infrastructural rot in the system, like, "workshops that have no equipment, overcrowded classrooms, and dilapidated structures." "We can't even retain our professors," he said. The academic identified the graduates of the educational system as the victims of years of neglect. He said, "We can no longer continue to deceive Nigerians. It is the same ruling class that will regard them [graduates of Nigerian universities] as half-baked." What if? The Oyo State Government recently adopted a "no work, no pay" approach against striking lecturers of the state polytechnic in Ibadan. Asked what the position of ASUU would be should the Federal Government adopt a similar approach, Mr. Awuzie, the first professor of Landscape Architecture in the country, said, "No problem. We [university lecturers] will find something to do; for instance, I am an academic as well as a professional." According to Mr. Awuzie, three of the issues being renegotiated are funding, conditions of service, and academic freedom. Kabir Akinyemi, the chairperson, Lagos State University chapter of the union, was confident that negotiations with the Federal Government team would continue. He said, "This is not the first time that the Federal Government will pull out of negotiations. In 2002/03, they did the same thing but they later came back to the negotiations table." He however added that the Federal Government's decision to pull out of the negotiations is embarrassing. The indefinite strike of the union has entered its second month and they are determined to continue until an agreement is singed with the Federal Government and implemented http://www.234next.com/csp/cms/sites/Next/News/Metro/5442833-147/story.csp

Religion / Re: Scandal: Pastor Chris Oyakhilome In South African Trouble! by kwenu: 4:36pm On Oct 27, 2008 |
Every fake ministry shall not stand, its already written. you can refer fake preachers as those whose ministry has collapsed . Jesus died but his ministry grew large and spread the more . please read your bible. we should be grateful to god for he goiving us pastor chris in our generation,i m never attracted to his ministry for the sake of miracles. when you listen to his teachings you ll know that hes from God Almighty and a true follower of christ, as for me i am addicted to his teachings and , nothing else can change me from listening to his teachings , wheter i m home or abroad. THE MORE YOU CRITICIZE THE MORE WE ARE GROWING also i have listened to lots of preachers but none can be compared to him hes too much GREATER IS HE THAT IS IN ME THAN HE THAT IS IN THE WORD LOVE YOU ALL JUST AS CHRIST LOVED ME LOVE MY PASTOR ALSO |
