Science/Technology / Elon Musk’s Spacex Inks Satellite Connectivity Deal With Google Cloud by kylewadde: 10:27pm On May 14, 2021
Google said on Thursday that it signed a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to use the space company’s growing satellite internet service, Starlink, with its cloud unit. SpaceX will install Starlink terminals at Google’s cloud data centers around the world, aiming to utilize the cloud for Starlink customers and enabling Google to use the satellite network’s speedy internet for its enterprise cloud customers.

The Starlink-Google Cloud capabilities, which include secure data delivery to remote areas of the world, will be available to customers by the end of 2021, Google said in a press release Thursday morning. SpaceX will install the first Starlink terminal at Google’s New Albany, Ohio, data center, a spokesman said, adding more plans on the partnership will be shared in the coming months.

The deal is a natural alliance for Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Google — which, in 2015, invested $900 million into the space company to cover an array of technology, including Starlink satellite manufacturing. So far, SpaceX has launched 1,625 Starlink satellites, with about 1,550 currently in orbit. A Starlink beta program that began last year has at least 10,000 users across the US, Canada, and a few European countries, with at least 500,000 deposits of $100 placed by potential customers of the service.

Competition is fierce between Musk’s Starlink network and the budding Kuiper Project from Jeff Bezos’ Amazon, which aims to launch more than 3,000 satellites in roughly the same orbit as Starlink to also provide global broadband internet. The Google-SpaceX deal marks another competitive win for Google in its own rivalry with Amazon’s behemoth cloud services unit, Amazon Web Services. Amazon executives have said they aim to leverage internet connectivity from Kuiper to supercharge its AWS cloud services.

“Applications and services running in the cloud can be transformative for organizations, whether they’re operating in a highly networked or remote environment,” Urs Hölzle, senior vice president of infrastructure at Google Cloud, said in the press release. Hölzle said Google is “delighted to partner with SpaceX to ensure that organizations with distributed footprints have seamless, secure, and fast access to the critical applications and services they need to keep their teams up and running.”

Phones / Microsoft Surface Duo: No Wireless Charging, No 5G, One Camera, Android 10 by kylewadde: 2:59pm On Aug 03, 2020
Microsoft is getting ready to launch its very first Android device, despite the company still officially claiming that the Surface Duo is set to go live in the holiday season of 2020.

Announced in late 2019, the Surface Duo is a dual-screen Android device that is supposed to push the Surface lineup beyond the PC market with the same high-quality and premium recipe.

But on the other hand, some of the specs of the Surface Duo could make Microsoft’s device lose the battle for customers seeking a high-end device.

First and foremost, it’s the processor, as the Surface Duo will most likely be powered by the Snapdragon 855 paired with 6GB RAM. Then, according to Microsoft watcher Zac Bowden, the Duo will stick with just one 11-megapixel camera installed at the top of the right display – depending on the position of the screen, it can be used for both selfies and as a rear camera.

The Surface Duo won’t feature 5G despite launching at a time when most manufacturers are going for such capabilities – Apple, for example, is projected to unveil the iPhone 12 in the fall, and all models in the lineup will support 5G.
Dead on arrival?

Surface Duo won’t feature wireless charging either, but instead come with fast charging support. NFC will be missing too, and this means no wireless payments with the Android device.

The battery powering the Surface Duo is likely to be a 3,460 mAh unit, and the aforementioned source says this should guarantee one full day per charge. Of course, this also depends on how you use the Duo, but it’s pretty clear the battery life isn’t impressive.

And last but not least, Android 10 will be installed out of the box, with Android 11 to be offered at a later time as a software update.

Many believe all these specs make the Surface Duo a device that’s likely to be dead on arrival. Certainly, the choice of an old-generation is questionable, to say the least, so it’ll certainly be interesting how Microsoft plans to make the Duo the hit that every Surface product is supposed to become.

Webmasters / Microsoft Really Wants Its New Browser To Be The Best PDF Client Too by kylewadde: 5:44pm On Jun 27, 2020
The original version of Microsoft Edge, which is now referred to as Edge legacy, has been described by many as the best PDF client rather than the best browser, and it’s all because Microsoft has focused a lot on working with PDF documents in the app.

And while the software giant has already released a new browser based on Chromium, it doesn’t necessarily mean the company is giving up on its dream of making this app the best PDF client around.

And this is why the new Microsoft Edge browser is about to get even more PDF features in addition to the existing capabilities like form filling, inking, dark mode, highlights, and others.
Accessibility features on the way

First and foremost, Microsoft says it’s working on bringing the smooth scroll experience from Edge legacy to the new browser when working with documents, but also on adding table of contents support. In other words, you’ll soon be able to navigate through a file when a table of contents is available, just like in a fully-featured PDF client.

A full highlight mode, as well as text notes, are also coming to Microsoft Edge in the next updates, and Microsoft says it’s focused on improving working with protected PDF files too.

“Microsoft Information Protection adds a layer of security to your documents. It ensures that only the users who have certain permissions as view, copy, annotate can take those actions on the file. Hence, no matter where the document goes, the data of your organization remains secure,” the company explains in a roadmap detailing the new PDF features coming to Edge browser.

And last but not least, the company is also planning a series of accessibility improvements, like filling PDF forms with screen readers, as well as support for digital signatures right within the app.
Webmasters / Microsoft, Harvard Announce Differential Privacy Open-source Platform by kylewadde: 9:54pm On Jun 26, 2020
Microsoft has just announced the world’s first open source platform for differential privacy, which is powered by the OpenDP Initiative developed by a team of researchers from Harvard.

The new platform, which is supposed to enable researchers to preserve privacy when analyzing datasets, the company explains in an announcement this week.

Microsoft says that beginning today, a royalty-free license under its differential privacy patents is available for anyone who wants to use the platform for data analysis.
Already available on GitHub

More specifically, the open-source platform for differential privacy makes it possible to look into data from customers without actually exposing the privacy of an individual. The accuracy of the analysis isn’t affected in any way, Microsoft says.

“Through these mechanisms, differential privacy protects personally identifiable information by preventing it from appearing in data analysis altogether. It further masks the contribution of an individual, essentially rendering it impossible to infer any information specific to any particular person, including whether the dataset utilized that individual’s information at all,” the software giant explains.

“As a result, outputs from data computations, including analytics and machine learning, do not reveal private information from the underlying data, which opens the door for researchers to harness and share massive quantities of data in a manner and scale never seen before.”

The work on the project started many months ago, and Microsoft says that its team and the Harvard researchers have been trying to build this platform for nearly a year, just to make sure that everything is running just as intended.

The open-source nature of the platform allows anyone to validate the implementation, while also enabling developers and researchers to further contribute to its development, thus improving the technology even further in the long term.

Both the differential privacy platform and the algorithms used to power the whole thing are now listed on GitHub for testing, building, and support.
