hello everyone.

Landed on sunday after a very long journey in Toronto airport with my wife and two kids. We we're cleared by customs and border officers, signed the CoPR and given a copy each and we we're welcomed to Canada.

After some days rest, we went to Lethbridge service Canada center to do our SIN but we we're told our info has not been uploaded on their database. They however initiated a paper application for myself and my spouse and that we should expect our SIN in 21days by mail.

Please has anyone experienced this before?

Thanks for your prompt response.

Congratulations.
Please can you share with us the specific pre-arrival programme you went through?

Thanks.

kay2011:
Long post Alert. Make una no vex abeg.

We got our PPR on the 25th October 2017. Got our Visas and COPR in December 2017. I enrolled with Acces Employment Pre-Arrival services in December 2017. I attended a lot of webinars, read through my modules, did my assignments. They worked on my Nigeria CV and turn it into a Canadian styled resume. At the completion of the modules, I was assigned a Job Developer – his role was to work with me to get a job.

I arrived in Ontario on March 2nd, 2018 and when I got to my hotel and switched on my phone, I realized I had 2 mails from my job developer:
1. He wanted to confirm if I was in-transit and I should let him know once I landed.
2. He wanted to know if he should forward my resume to a TD Bank recruiter.
I replied the mails in affirmative. See this guy o!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then the following happened:
March 5th, 2018 – I got a screening assessment from TD Bank which I completed the same day
March 6th, 2018 – I got a telephone call from a TD Bank recruiter scheduling a phone interview for March 7th, 2018
March 7th, 2018 – I did my Telephone interview. It was interesting though.
March 12th, 2018 – Got an email for an In-Person interview for Thursday March 15th, 2018.
March 15th, 2018 - I went for the In-Person interview at TD Bank office at Yorkdale. It was a panel interview of 2 interviewers. One of my interviewers said “You were highly recommended by the people at Acces Employment”. The interview took like 2 hours. I was drained when I left the place.
March 19th, 2018 – Got a telephone call that I passed the interview and I should get a mail from TD Bank’s HR to know what the next step was.
March 20th, 2018 – Got a telephone call from HR that I was being offered a role, I should get my offer letter and other documents within the next 2-3 working days
March 22nd, 2018 – Got the offer letter, I accepted the offer and background checks were initiated.
March 24th, 2018 - Background check started by First Advantage. Loads of forms to run through. I was told it might take up to 1 month to conclude the background check process.
April 5th, 2018 – Got a telephone call from TD Bank to discuss my start date.

The role is an entry level position but it affords me the opportunity to start a career in this country. I intend to do my certification exams within the next 6 months.

The purpose of this post is to emphasis the importance of PRE-ARRIVAL programs. These programs are free and there for us to utilize. Please, let us try and take advantage of these programs.

Got a class to attend now. I promise to share this journey with you guys as it unfolds.
Have a great day all.

Congratulations!
Please how is it landing on a Sunday? How long did stay with the officers for the documentations?
Were you asked to show any PoF?

Thanks.

We landed via Ethiopian Airline last week Sunday and it was a smooth flight asides from the fact that it was super longgggg. The food was ok, inflight entertainment was just there as there were no recent movies but in all it was an ok flight for the price.

We landed in Toronto and it was smooth all the way plus the officers were sooo polite....jeezzzz. We declared all the food stuff we had but our bags were not checked, the woman was just gisting with us and that really made us feel comfortable and at ease. The weather wasn't also that baddddd, just ensure you layer up properly.

We have been able to open bank accounts, get our mobile lines, SIN and we also did the driver's knowledge test which we passed. We were informed that we could register straight away for the G licence but with this plenty snow.....I would rather wait till the weather is better. Just the health card registration left now (I guess). I have also started searching for jobs (customer service) and I did like two interviews this week but still waiting for the outcome and the next step.

Thank you all for your contributions so far as I was able to learn a whole lot from you all.

P.S If anyone has any leads for Customer Service role or any other job, kindly holla oooooo.....I no dey pose.

Please I need you to put me through how you achieved this because iv tried severally but won't work. I used my Nigeria naira card specifically GTBank naira maatercard but didn't work. I with appreciate if you can help me out on this.

Thanks.
Sorry for late response.

I didn't buy the credit pack. Went to the option of getting a Canadian number and they requested payment. Used my Nigerian card to pay about 7 dollars and that was it. I think the credit pack is only useful if you want to be calling another country other than US/Canada .
Please I have been having issues getting a number on freetone and I need help. It kept on telling m my card(GTBank and Stanbic MasterCard) is not correct when trying to make payment. I have done this more than 4times and it kept on giving me the same response.

Please help your brother.

Thanks.

Hello house, been silently following the thread. So I got PPR last year and did soft landing because I sort of wanted to get a job or at least be in the process of getting one before I move. I got the freetone app, included the number on my CV and applied for jobs. More recently, I started to contact talent attraction managers of the companies I was interested in on LinkedIn, it was hard for me to do but I decided to anyway since the worst I'll get is a "NO". Some didn't respond and I would send reminders after a week or two and I started getting positive replies, emails, phone interviews and video interviews. Summary is i just got a job in Canada right here in Nigeria. Although the job required someone with a CPA designation, i managed to convince them that i had ICAN which would make

I love your story and I must congratulate you. It must have been God and Hes just starting with you, He will see you through.

For me, I tap into your faith and breakthrough!
Big Congratulations!

I'm back people with yet another of my recent experience with career advancement in Canada. So you guys remember me telling you all how I got two jobs and was spoilt for choice over which to pick. Well to refresh those that may have forgotten I chose the big firm (even though the position was temporary and entry level hourly operator while the other was permanent ,full time but for a smaller firm) because I believed it had better prospects for career growth.

Well I took my humble pie and resumed for the hourly operator job on 2nd January and we were all placed on a 3day orientation and training program. It went on like that up until Thurs when something dramatic happened. After we have been dispersed to head to our various departments, as I was waiting in the lobby with my other colleagues for our department rep, I was approached by the operations manager who asked if I could spare him 5mins of my time. I obliged and he took me to a meeting room and we were immediately joined by another manager. I sensed I was going to be interviewed again, so I quickly psyched myself. The operations manager started by telling me he needed a new group manager in his department as one of his guys just got promoted and moved to another location and he feels I can fill that position. The next 30-45mins was a grilling but yet refreshing interview where I was mainly asked competency based questions that required I relate my answers very well to my past experiences (which all came from Nigeria).

Afterwards I left the interview feeling like what just happened and went back to join the rest of my hourly operator crew only for the heads upstairs to send for me again after like 30mins. When I came up this time, the operations manager was there to receive me and then he told me there is someone he will like me to meet. This time it was the overall Plant manager who is the top boss in the Edmonton plant. I almost froze to the floor but then as omo naija my head quickly correct grin. After a firm handshake with the Plant manager I was taken to a larger conference room just me and him. Then he started interviewing me again. As usual I kept relating my answers to past work experiences from Nigeria. In the end he thanked me and encouraged me to keep developing myself especially in the new job I was being offered as they strictly apply meritocracy in career advancement in d organization.

I closed from work that still perplexed at how fast my fortunes are about to change. I got home and was still narrating the whole ordeal to my wife when I got a call from the operations manager that I have got the job and if I'm willing to accept the offer. I answered in the affirmative. Then he asked me to come into the plant the next day(we were billed to attend a safety training off-site as the hourly operators) as I need to sign a new offer letter and start immediately on the new management position I was offered.

So people that was how I started the year/week as a floor staff but ended the week as a first-line manager. The purpose of my sharing this story is not to in any way pride in my efforts because I owe everything I am to God but to encourage someone/anyone who can dare to believe in the impossible. Yes miracles still do happen. It's not by he that runneth but on the Lord that showeth mercy. Be courageous my fellow naija Canadians. Go out there and claim what's yours!

Peace.
Thanks for the review.

Please how do I make my payment online for Ethiopian airline booking to Calgary? Iv tried couple of times but wasn't successful.
Do they have option of paying in their office? If yes, please how do I go about it?

Thanks.

Esughusughu:

You can also use wakanow, cheapflightsdotcom. You can get your SIN from service Canada centers near you. I don't know if the officials handling that have closing hours during weekdays. But make sure you ASK once you get to the immigration officials. I wasn't able to get mine at the airport despite being so keen on doing it, just cause I misinterpreted a directive.
Ethiopian airline is very OK and i would recommend it. There's inflight entertainment in both legs of the trip and very short stop at Addis Ababa. Though you may not enjoy their food, you can request for more of the stuff you prefer. No transit visa required as already pointed out earlier. I had whole row to myself in economy and I slept on all three seats comfortably for the long flight to Toronto

hello yimiton,

Please how did you go about getting the cheap Ethiopian flight?
Will appreciate because I intend to follow them too, thanks

yimiton:
Yey!!! Welcome to Canada and thanks for coming back with feedback on Ethiopian Airline.

Yes, I've bought our Ethiopian airline ticket at an unbelievably cheap price and I'm glad you had a positive experience. Hopefully, we will have a sweet experience too.

Did you pass through Toronto? (YYZ) if yes, how long did it take you to complete your immigration process?

We're a family of 4. How long would you say we should plan to spend at the airport from Landing and taking a vehicle to our destination?

your accumulated days out of the 5years must be equal or greater than 3years which is not feasible when using holidays. So, its not looking feasible.

I don't really understand. It says they have removed minimum restriction in terms of how many days in a year. What I was asking is if a person can stay in Naija and be going there for hols using the PR card. So if I go there at least once a year for 3 years and stay about 3/4 weeks, I can still qualify?

Thanks @vcole for this...
Meanwhile, I'm so sorry for the assumption.

vcole:

Na wa. This assumption that everyone is a "bro can come off as quite distasteful. Being male is not the default human gender oh. I'm female.

As regards housing, it all depends on your preferences, family size and budget. I live in the southwest of Calgary and chose it prior to arrival because it has good school districts and I have a growing family. On getting here, I really do like my community and I have no regrets. I live in a 2 bed/2 bath condo and I pay $1200/mth with utilities and underground parking inclusive. This fell right into our family budget for housing which we made prior to arrival. So you have several options. Check rentfaster.ca and kijiji.ca A condo, basement apartment, townhouse, single home grin I'll recommend you go with am option that you know you can afford for about 6 months with your savings just in case getting a job becomes a nightmare.

As regards jobs, my experience thus far is that there are jobs; even in Alberta which is still officially in recession, you only need to be willing to do them. The chances of a new immigrant with foreign qualifications landing a job in their professional field, soon after migrating similar to what they had from their home country, anywhere in the world and not Canada alone, are slim. There are persons who have been successful at doing that but they are few and far between. I do not say this to discourage you but I say this to encourage you to be flexible and open to opportunities while on your path to achieving your "Canadian career goals"

That being said, what I have found here (as opposed to my experience and observations in the states and England - no offence to anyone currently resident in these countries) is that there truly is dignity in labour. Nobody looks down on you if you are doing a "blue collar" job. Also I've realised that even people who work at so called menial jobs here earn enough to live okay. I mean minimum wage paying jobs which is about the worst you can earn, right? You can't be homeless at those jobs. You would earn enough monthly to put a roof over your head, ride on transit to and fro work, place food on your table and clothe yourself. You won't drive a Mercedes or have dinner at earl's every Friday or wear Calvin Klein clothes but you would live okay and if you keep your head in the game, you would work your way up to where you want to be.

I apologize for this long post. I hope it turns out useful.

You pay for sending initially.

Then pay for pick up after your application has been approved and pick up mail received.

Meanwhile, you will have to forward the PUM from AVO with an authorization letter to DHL in order to be able to pick your return parcel. I'm sure you will be properly directed by DHL when you go there to send the passports.

All the best!

For the dhl sending of passport.. did you pay for the return at once or you send to Ghana and get contacted when it is ready for pickup? before you pay again at dhl for the pickup.

Part 2.

From there i was led to where i took an escalator down to claim my luggages. no one checks to see you aint claiming another person's luggage. this is how much they trust people here. It was after i claimed my luggage i remembered i had to call my neighbour's daughter for my accomodation. my phone just could not connect to their wifi, i had to use 2 people's phones to reach her and by the time they left, my phone was connecting so she sent the address she booked for me and told me my Landlady will be waiting to receive me. I now got an airport taxi that took me to the place. i pressed the bell and the wonderful Jamaican woman opened her doors to me and the accomodation that was meant to be for one week is ending up to be where i will stay until i get my bearing in this Obodo called Canada.

What transpired between us is spiritual which i will not bore you people here with. The only thing i can say is that when my pastor was praying for me, he said God has positioned someone who will assist me in Canada and He actually did. When i chatted some people they felt the rent was high and i told her i wanted to consider other places which she agreed to. She told me that when i walked into her door, her spirit agreed with mine but if i felt her rate was high, i could try some other places. We went to church today and the message her Pastor preached got me crying throughout the service. God is so mindful of us.Now am getting penticostal.

The day i landed, she took me to open account, the next day to buy simcard (freedom mobile as suggested by my neighbour's daughter) and phone, the next day to dollarama for household items, no frills (cheap groceries), walmart, valley village, talize (last 2 for cheap winter clothings). There is no day we dont go out and she shows me around. She says tomorrow, i am going to venture out on my own for the 1st time. me too i am eager to enter their bus and train.

i also experience jet lag. i feel sleepy when naija people dey sleep and when canny people dey sleep i am also forced to sleep so i sleep more than i am awake. google presently is my good friend as i use it to find all these job websites like indeed, workopolis, randstad, jobilico, monster and i have been applying.

right now i want to attend that bridging program and also be slotted for career edge paid intern.

That will be all for now. meanwhile i just feel like bring all my village people here as i see this place as a land of opportunity.

@yimiton,

I will advice you send them a mail to them while you attach the screenshot of your CIC approval page.

Our CIC page was approved in five days but they refused to send PUM until we send a mail to Accra visa office. Lo and behold, it was sent the next day.

Thank God, both passports and CoPR are here with us now.

yimiton:
My Dear people, please don't blame me for being impatient oh, in my mind, I am already in Canada and I plan to leave in December or latest January.

But you know, final arrangement like sale of property and booking of flight cannot be confidently done unless we see our COPR and stamped passports.

So, to help me plan properly, I will appreciate if you will drop how long it took from the day Accra received your passports to the day they you got the mail, informing you that they're ready.

We tracked and saw that ours were delivered to Accra on the 22nd of September, 2017.

Please how long did yours take?
