Education / Buhari Govt Takes Step To Deregister ASUU by lackren(m): 8:41am On Sep 23, 2022
President Muhammadu Buhari's government has threatened to withdraw the Certificate of Registration (CoR) of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the alleged to submit the financial reports of its audited account.

The Federal Government on Thursday introduced a new twist to the rift between the two bodies.

The new twist came barely a day after the Court directed the ASUU to suspension of its seven months old strike.

Newsflash Nigeria had earlier reported the National Industrial Court (NIC) ordered the ASUU to suspend the industrial action pending the determination of the matter referred to it by the Nigerian government through its Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige.

The judge, Polycarp Hamman, gave the order on Wednesday, in a ruling on the federal government’s application for an interlocutory injunction against the ongoing ASUU strike.

The government said the court injunction ordering ASUU back to the classrooms would not affect negotiations with the union.

The government threatened to withdraw the union’s CoR because of its alleged failure to submit the financial reports of its audited account as required by law in the last five years.

It was learnt that the government, through the Registrar of Trade Unions, has issued a query to the union on why its CoR should not be withdrawn for running against the law. Read full story here

Politics / Hushpuppi: US Court Orders Arrest Of Abba Kyari by lackren(m): 3:20pm On Jul 29, 2021
In the standing trail of Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi in the United States, the US court has issued a warrant of arrest for a Deputy Commissioner of Police in Nigeria, Abba Kyari.

According to a court document obtained by Peoples Gazette, Otis Wright of the United States District Court for the Central District of California ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation to track down Kyari and produce him in the United States for his role in a multi-million dollar fraud perpetrated by Ramon Abbas, aka Hushpuppi; and his co-conspirators.

Politics / APC Ignores Keyamo Advice On Supreme Court Verdict, Goes Ahead With Congresses by lackren(m): 1:40pm On Jul 29, 2021
The Caretaker/Extraordinary National Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said it would go ahead with its scheduled congresses over the supreme court decision on Ondo gubernatorial poll, saying there is no cause for alarm.

Newsflash Nigeria had reported that on Wednesday, July 28, the apex court affirmed the election of Rotimi Akeredolu as Ondo state governor. Akeredolu won by a narrow-split decision of 4:3 in the seven-man panel of justices.

Eyitayo Jegede, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had queried the validity of Akeredolu’s nomination by the national caretaker committee of the APC headed by Mai Mala Buni, Yobe governor.

The judges ruling read by Justice Mary Odili noted that Buni’s position as a sitting Governor and also the national chairman of the APC is strange to the law and is a violation of both the party’s constitution and the 1999 constitution of Nigeria (as amended).
Odili argued that Buni as a sitting governor was wrong to have presided over the process that produced Akeredolu as the candidate of the APC.

Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, asked the party to sack Buni and anyone holding any executive position on the committee and immediately suspend the planned congresses.

Keyamo said the reason is to avoid legal battles since the competence of Buni to hold the position as chairman has been questioned by the supreme court.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday in Abuja, John Akpanudoedehe, National Secretary of the APC caretaker committee, said the Apex court’s verdict on Ondo gubernatorial poll has “no bearing on the CECPC’s status and its membership”.

“The clarification is against the backdrop of personal opinions being expressed by some individuals on the status of the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) and its capacity to conduct the Congresses,” Akpanudoedehe said.

“While it is not our intention to join issues with these commentators, the Supreme Court’s Wednesday judgement affirming the Election victory of the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu SAN had no bearing on the CECPC’s status and its membership. READ FULL STORY HERE

Politics / How Hushpuppi Bribed DCP Abba Kyari To Jail Associate In $1.1m Scam by lackren(m): 11:47am On Jul 29, 2021
Ramon Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, the embattled Nigerian socialite, alleged that he bribed a deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Abba Kyari, to arrest a co-fraudster, Chibuzo Vincent, the United States Attorney’s Office in the Central District of California revealed.

Newsflash Nigeria had reported that the Instagram personality, who is known for his luxury life, was arrested in the UAE in June 2020 alongside 11 of his associates over allegations bordering on hacking, impersonation, scamming, banking fraud, and identity theft.

His extradition to the US had followed after the UAE police detailed his arrest in a special operation dubbed ‘Fox Hunt 2’ where he was accused of defrauding 1.9 million victims to the tune of N168 billion.

Hushpuppi was thereafter arraigned and detained at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) in Chicago ahead of his trial.

The embattled Instagram celebrity had recently pleaded guilty to the money laundering charges against him, risking 20 years imprisonment.
But in a fresh development, US court officials said during interrogation, Hushpuppi disclosed that he bribed Kyari to arrest and jail one of his rivals in Nigeria after a dispute over a $1.1 million scam on Qatari businesspeople.

According to a statement by the US department of justice, Hushpuppi asked Kyari to jail Kelly Chibuzor Vincent, his colleague, after both were
locked in a dispute over how to share the $1.1 million loot received from the Qatari businessperson.

In the filings by the officials, Vincent was said to have contacted the victim and informed him that he was being scammed by Hushpuppi’s syndicate.

As stated in the documents, this enraged Hushpuppi who was said to have contacted Kyari to arrest and jail him.
Hushpuppi was also quoted as saying that Kyari allegedly sent photos of Vincent in jail and followed this up with a bank account number to which a wire transfer should be made for the successful arrest and detention of his co-fraudster.

The statement read: “Court documents outline a dispute among members of the conspiracy, which allegedly prompted Vincent to contact the victim and claim that Abbas and Juma were engaged in fraud. After this contact, Abbas allegedly arranged to have Vincent jailed in Nigeria by Abba Alhaji Kyari, 46, of Nigeria.

“According to the affidavit, Kyari is a highly decorated deputy commissioner of the Nigeria Police Force who is alleged to have arranged for Vincent to be arrested and jailed at Abbas’ behest, and then sent Abbas photographs of Vincent after his arrest. Kyari also allegedly sent Abbas bank account details for an account into which Abbas could deposit payment for Vincent’s arrest and imprisonment.” READ EXCLUSIVE STORY HERE

Politics / APC May Lose Power As Court Declares Buni’s Chairmanship Illegal by lackren(m): 10:11am On Jul 29, 2021
The judgment of the Supreme Court on the Ondo State governorship election based on the minority ruling is threatening the All Progressives Congress local and state congresses starting on Saturday.

Newsflash Nigeria recalls that though the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the APC and its candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu in a 4-3 judgment on Wednesday, the minority ruling read by Justice Mary Odili noted that Buni’s position as a sitting Governor and also the national chairman of the APC is strange to the law and is a violation of both the party’s constitution and the 1999 constitution of Nigeria (as amended).
Odili argued that Buni as a sitting governor was wrong to have presided over the process that produced Akeredolu as the candidate of the APC.

Our reporter gathered on Wednesday that although the APC was going ahead with the congresses, it feared that some members could challenge the exercises in court since the Supreme Court in its judgment had declared the chairmanship of Mai Mala Buni illegal.
It was learnt that apart from the disagreement over planned consensus arrangement, the Supreme Court judgment had worsened the party’s woes.

A member of the APC’s national caucus, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said although the party was going ahead with its congresses, members were worried and divided about the implications of the judgment.
The party chieftain explained that the judgment had “called to question the legality of the caretaker committee.

“We are dealing with a combustible issue. All the seven Supreme Court Justices agreed on the constitutional point that a sitting governor cannot hold the dual elective position of governor and party national chairman.
“Now, it was not only the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, that escaped being removed by the whiskers due to no fault of his, it was also our party.

“If the opposition had the presence of mind to join Mai Mala Buni as a party to the suit, we would all have been done for. Our aggrieved members and our opponents have surely learnt one or two things from this. READ FULL STORY HERE
