Politics / The Era Of APC by lawekpemi(m): 12:41pm On Feb 22, 2016
THE ERA OF APC; THE ERA OF CHANGE
NERC refusal to revert the electricity tariff, despite being mandated by the house of senate (the Red Chamber) to do so is raising a lot of questions, as who should give and take orders. This is just a show of who is more powerful, the legislature or the executive? This clandestine but vocal tussle of supremacy between these political gladiators, is at the detriment of the poor masses, this should be the least of the worries of the hungry masses. Without mincing words APC is failing this country by the ticking of time. Nigerians can't wait till 2019 to show this clueless, visionless and missionless, administration the way out. All we hear is, "we are waging war against corruption" yet no single soul has been prosecuted after agonising 9months in office. The question that is begging for answer is: who is fooling who?
Why must the Minister of Power (Babatunde Raji Fashola) increase electricity tariff when power generation and distribution are at their lowest ebb? More so, at a time when there is alarming rate of hardship, Poverty, hunger, starvation, mass retrenchment, unemployment, insecurity, inflation worst of all economic recession.
The present economic hardship is enough to make a father deny his title, father.
A breakdown of the astronomical increase in the price of food items in the last 6 months:
A bag of rice is sold for #12000; previously sold at #7,400; 5litres of vegetable oil is sold for,#2000 previously sold at #1,200, palm oil 5dlitres is sold for #1800; previously sold at #1100, while beans a "derica" is sold for 200 as against #120; Tomatoes small basket #1850, previously sold for #1440, Pepper one basket(small) #1200, previously, #650, Onions, Gari one bag #5000, previously, #2800. Fish, Beef, Chickens, one Caton #7500 before #5600, Turkey one Caton #9000 previously #6500; a sachet water now #10,which was previously sold at #5,also house rents; Toiletries, have all astronomically increased owing to the fall of Naira, with its remote cause on the fall of oil price.
It's a direct factual statement that this economic recession didn't just start overnight, its largely caused by the fall of oil price in the global markets and the recklessness of the previous administration, but, as a government that is not aloof of the economic realities of the country, also as a new administration coming on board with the mantra of "change" what palliative did it put in place to forestall this economic catastrophe? What measure did it put in place to arrest the negative trend? What innovations did the Buhari led administration put in place to prevent the country from being where it is?
The question is, What economic innovation has this government brought in that dissimilar from the previous administration?
The price of goods have skyrocketed but the minimum wage has remained the same while some governors are calling for the reduction of the #18000 minimum wage.
The president should heed to the advice of Prof. Wole Soyinka who advised the him to immediately call for an economic Confap. Where economic experts will nip this economic recession on board and proffer solution to this economic gridlock. Calling an Economic Confap should be the utmost priority of this government.
Lastly, the central bank Governor should be shown the exit door as he look, sound and ooze auras of cluelessness.

Politics / Pdp Dead On Arrival by lawekpemi(m): 7:43pm On Feb 17, 2016
ALI MODU SHERIFF; THE BURIER OF PDP

One would have thought PDP had learnt from its plethora of political miscalculations during the last election, having been thrown out from the political arena in such an ignominious way.
Making an unwise decision bordering on the most reverend and exalted position of the party at this juncture will be too costly.
How can the north east caucus and the governors nominate Ali Modu Sheriff as the candidate from North east to pilot the affairs of PDP. Personally, PDP is dead on arrival, if this erroneous selection of Alli Modu Sheriff is upheld by the PDP BOT.
One would have expected a political wizard like Wilberforce Junta to be the new chairman of the party, someone with an unmatched political experience, one who has been a staunch member of the party with an unflinching loyalty and vehement believe in the party resuscitation, couple with his vast experience on grass roots politics, also with no track record of financial thievery. Wilberforce Junta is not only political dodged, he is free from financial misappropriation and no history of criminal record. What PDP need at this perilous moment is a leader with an unblemished file and Wilberforce Junta is likely the only candidate with such political credentials.
As at yesterday Ali Modu Sheriff was not part of the nominees screened by the North east Caucus, out of the blues his name was smuggled into the folds with the ex- EFCC boss Nuhu Ribadu.
One is left to explicitly analyse this clandestine shenanigans as the handiwork of the ruling party in a bid to infiltrate into the once buoyant party.
In furtherance of,Ali modu's nomination should not be confirmed by the PDP BoT, being that; he is a man with questionable idiosyncrasies, he was once accused of financing the dreaded Boko Haram: Also he is a man who has dua loyalty for the party (ANPP)and PDP. One fundamental error PDP BoT will make by confirming Ali Modu as the chairman of the dying PDP is to make a man who doesn't have the political clouts needed to put back PDP on track and who doesn't control the loyalty of the north east leaders and the rank and files, he also doesn't have the loyalty of majority of the PDP governors, reps. Members and senators.
Although, this is an inter-party affair, as an ardent believer of democracy and its principles, also as one who is keen in the political development of his country, it will political apartheid to be aloof of the political goings in ones domain.
If PDP truly wants to be a political force to be reckoned with, and a vibrant opposition with a clear mission to take back the mantle of leadership in 2019, then, its will rethink the confirmation of Ali Modu Sheriff as the new Chairman.

Politics / Politics In The Senate by lawekpemi(m): 3:09pm On Oct 29, 2015
THE POLITICS IN THE SENATE

For the first time ever one will want to queue up behind the present administration being chaired by president Muhammadu Buhari for about getting it right for the first time. The intimidating academic qualifications and educational pedigree of prof.Claudius Daramola (one of the ministerial nominees)without any iota of skepticism confers on him the portfolio of the next education Minister, but if by any means the reverse becomes the case then APC as a party is suffering from a disease known as conjunctivitis and intelligentsia bareness. One is not only gleeful by the curriculum Vitae of the prof. or being an academic alone( a teacher, an acting head-master, head-master, lecturer and a professor) but on the soothing fact the he acquired all his educational degrees in Nigeria. This to a very wide extent baptised Prof. Daramola with the rich knowledge of the problems facing the Nigeria education sector.
In as much as one was not swept off his feet as one had expected to have by the voracity of the professor, a shrug of the shoulder is given to the performance of the prof. who displayed a rather above average result sheet when answering questions as filed by the Senators.

A swift drift from the ministerial nominees to the politics of the Senate. Its no news that the heat that was raised by the nomination of former Rivers State governor Chibuike Rotimi Amachi as regards his eligibility of being a minister, having plethora of allegations against him bothering on corruption and embezzlement, finally, has been laid to rest, the screening of the former Rivers state governor was done yesterday without any rancour or fisticuffs from the opposition party (PDP) which has hitherto displayed such trait, the display by the PDP senators live one to ponder on the clandestine permutations and compensation that would have been done behind close doors.

Prior the plenary of the Senate yesterday, the screening of Rotimi Amachi which has raised so much dust that even the dead sneezed, more so, the mentioning of such name in the red chamber was enough to set the stage for a free for all from both parties in the Senate. The PDP which before now was hell bent on stopping the former governor from being screened as a ministerial nominee, and not wanting to shift grounds on such position, yesterday took a parabola. The belligerent idiosyncrasies of the opposition has created an atmosphere of ambiguity in the minds of many Nigerians who hold the view that Rotimi Amachi will not be screened and even if he is going to be screened at all by the Senators, he will pass through the eye of a needle in the hands of the opposition party (PDP), but to the chagrin of many, not even a question was asked by the PDP senators. The bewilderment of many Nigerians who have taken keen interest in the screening of the ministerial nominees: yesterday's plenary session will linger in the memory of many owing to the taciturnity gesture of the opposition members who hitherto have been spitting fire and erupting volcanic saliva all in a bid to forestall Amachi from being screened.

The only logical conclusion one can deduce from the moroseness of the opposition (PDP) is on the fact that " Ghana must go bags" would have changed hands. A Lot of compensation would have been done and those having a case in the EFCC might be given a soft landing and a fair hearing.

Due to the controversial nature of the case of the former governor which one can analyze to be political rather than in the battle of competency, the allegations of corruption as it's levelled against him by the various petitions clandestinely sponsored by the opposition is just a way to unnecessarily grill the former governor who is envisaged as a betrayer. The opposition party saw the screening of the former governor as the only avenue to get their pound of flesh. Seeing the vehement position held by the opposition party forced the ruling party APC to delay the screening of the ex-governor for two weeks, just to douse the tension in the house and buy as much time as possible, also, in order to go into political consultations, negotiations and permutations just to ease the way for the political gladiator, who is only good at stabbing his boss in the back.

Of recent the allegations of financial misappropriation and restlessness of the former governor of Akwa Ibom State Godwills Akpabio has been occupying the front pages of the various newspapers both local and foreign. More so, Akpabio is the minority leader in the Senate whose seconder to any motion as moved by the majority leader in the Senate is very pivotal. Akpabio's position in the Senate is sacrosanct, if he fails to second any motion moved by the majority leader such motion may not see the day of light and the proceedings in the red chamber may be held to ransom. Also Akpabio is a very respected Senator among the PDP senators, this assertion is proven on his emergence as a minority leader being a first timer as a senator. Such sensitive position is mostly reserved for at least a second time senator who has accumulated vast wealth of experience.

Probably, one of the political bargain the PDP senators would have tabled before the APC Leadership would have been, all allegations bothering on embezzlement, financial racketeering, siphoning of public funds, etc. be dropped or swept under the carpet in other to allow smooth screening of the controversial Amachi.
If this assertion is remotely close to the truth then, the fight against corruption has finally been sacrificed on the altar of political bargain and Buhari's corruption crusade is just a show to hoodwinks gullible Nigerians.

NYSC / Nysc by lawekpemi(m): 2:59pm On Oct 29, 2015
NYSC SCHEME:THE BEAUTY, THE SHENANIGANS,THE FRAUD
It's no news that the National Youth
Service Corps (NYSC) was established in 1973 during the regime of Gen Yakubu Gowon. This service is to engage Nigerian graduates to help develop the country in the way they can. The programme was designed in a way that graduates from all universities and polytechnics compulsorily partake in it, in as much as they are within the age limit (30yrs). They are made to serve their father land in the little way they can by engaging in community service.
In this compulsory one year of service to one's country, the programme was designed in such a way that it's foster the spirit of camaraderie among corpers.
Asides the gregariousness the scheme is meant to create among corpers,it was originally aimed at allowing corpers to tour various states of their choice, learn new culture, food, make new friends, most importantly enjoy the liberty and essence of being a Nigerian. The scheme was drafted in a way that one can be posted to any part of the country to explore and enjoy the rich cultural heritage of the area posted to.

In the early good days of the programme, graduates least worries was the state to be posted to. Every state was potentially a haven for the corpers. No graduate get sleepless nights due to the uncertainty that surrounds the place, state one is to be posted. This is not based on the lucid fact that some state do not pay corpers: or owing to the remoteness of the States, but on the fact that antecedents of pogrom of some States have made such State a potential red zones and very lethal for corpers to tread on. The exquisiteness in the NYSC programme is in the fact that graduates learn new ideas, new skills, gain new experience even meet future partners and impact positively to the society or state posted to.
Personally, the idea behind the establishment of the NYSC scheme has long gone the drain. Back in the days potential corpers wear the white and green khaky with much pride, gaieties, honour and respect. Graduates look forward to the service year with much expectations and with the pride of service to one's country. Graduates were ready to carry out their duties diligently and obediently regardless of the state one is posted. The reverse is now the case. As many a graduate fast and pray; consult some spiritualists to aid their posting, some even bribe their way out in order to get State with less security challenges and with juicy "alawee", States like Lagos,Abuja Rivers, Akwa-Ibom, Delta, etc. have been tagged hot cakes as potential corpers pay substantial amount of money only to bribe their names through.

In line with safety and precautionary measures, the Nigeria government have come out with glut of measures to forestall a replica of 2011 post-election violence which left scores of Corps members dead and many injured. North East, Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, to be precise shouldn't be posting zones for corps members based on the antecedents. Due to the insurrection in those zones which actually have been boiling, corps members are not meant to be posted in such perilous areas but to the chagrin of many a lot of graduates were sent to Borno, Adamawa and Yobe State respectively.

Prior the posting of 2015 batches, NYSC leadership headed by Brig. Gen. Johnson Bamidele Olawunmi came out with a malicious system of choosing preferred States to be posted. The system is filled with all manner of deceit fraud and it's bedeviled with corruption from the highest order. Without prejudice, it can be argued that the system of picking your preferred State is the greatest shenanigans any man can do to his fellow man. If the system is anything to go by, why is Lagos filled before its listed out for potential Corps members to choose? If this system is to followed, why are corps members posted to state they didn't pick? To further corroborate this claim, my younger sister was given a state she never thought of, when she went online to choose her preferred States she was given the option of Kano, Sokoto and Plateau. Having rest her fate to God after series of cries, fear of the States and frustration owing to the limited choice and precariousness of the States, she finally made up her mind. To her greatest surprise when she printed her call up letter she saw Taraba State. A state she never saw as an option. Also, a friend of hers who's preferred States were Ogun, Oyo and Kwara, was given Borno State. This fraud is the new antics by the NYSC leadership to beguile gullible and innocuous graduates. This antics is also to allay parent the apathy they have for the northern region, let alone the boiling North Eastern part.

In furtherance of, the NYSC is just a wraith of its former self. The scheme has over stayed it's welcome, it's has caused more arm than good it's just a shread of time wasting. This accusations is borne out of the plethora of demerits that have bigoted the the once unblemished beauty.
One of the failure of the scheme is the issue of orientation camps. Semantically, government has defiled the meaning of orientation. These orientation camps are no better than a concentration camps. The orientation camps of some states are worst than the cubicle of a swine. The future leaders are concentrated in a big hall like a refugee taking refuge in another country. These camps are as old as the birth of time, without little or no renovation since inception. A good example is that of Kwara State. The orientation camp is an eye-saw, if a foreign dog is camped there for less 24 hours it will contract the most dreaded diseases. The camp in Kwara: Nysc Permanent Orientation Camp,Yikpata Edu LGA,is the worst of all. The most pathetic is the manner at which the youths of this blessed country are piled up in a single hall to co-exist as if they are no good than a pack of rascals.
The question is, what happen to the annual allocation to the NYSC scheme? Is Kwara State not involved in the allocations? If not why is the camp still in a sorry states. What happen to the funds? From a reliable source, the camp has worn no new look since inception, yet, funds are being endorsed for the project. Taking a visual ride to other orientation camps clearly shows that, there have been diversion of funds meant for the renovation of the various camps. From rigorous findings it's now confirmed that 80% of various orientation camps need new look both in interior and exterior. Why should corps members be fed like fugitives. The meal served in camps are so malnourishly cooked that it performs the opposite of what a good meal should in one. Yet the federal government keep endorsing billion of naira for the project annually.

Another area of concern is the allowance package, the allowance of corpers is so meagre that it's barely cater for the needs of the Corps members. No sooner had corpers collected their monthly "alawee" than its being exhausted. The attitude of some state governors is more than heinous, why should corpers be own their meagre wages? Though some State do not pay corpers asides the federal government allowance. Yet the best is needed from the youths.

The attitude of the youths is another focal point to be brought to the fore. The youths to a very large extent have displayed high level of indiscipline: ranging from sexual escapade, criminality, cultism, rape and other vices etc. Some corpers have been caught having sex on camps, some engages in stealing, some rape while others in cultism.

In as much as the scheme is not a complete sham, it's has shreads of benefits. The scheme would have be better if it's properly funded and the lingering corruption in high places are arrested and the perpetrators are brought to book. More so, the scheme needs total overhauling. The government should step up the allowance of the corps members in other to encourage the youths to give in their best. Allowance from the federal government and state should be on a round figure in order the nip the menace if high patronage of some States to the board. All the camps should be renovated and properly equipped. While there should be reshuffling of the leadership of the scheme to limit the surge of corruption.
