Politics / PDP Reschedules Campaign Flag Off In Nasarawa Over Police Permit by leethebee: 11:05pm On Nov 25, 2022
Nasarawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has rescheduled its campaign flag off ahead of 2023 general election following alleged disapproval by the police.

The party had fixed Monday, Nov. 28, to begin their campaign in Toto Local Government Area of the state, but had to reschedule to Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022.

Mr Francis Orogu, Chairman of the party in the state, confirmed the development at a press conference on Friday in Karu Local Government Area.

He said that the party had sought and gotten approval from the Police to hold the rally on Nov. 28, in Toto LGA.

Orogu, however, said that while arrangements were being concluded for the event, the party got a letter from the Commissioner of Police, Maiyaki Mohammed-Baba on Friday, Nov. 25, that the rally would not be allowed to hold.

“He (CP) said he was informed by the Toto Local Government chairman that he is not aware of our coming.

“This is laughable, and to us democratically mischievous because we know that the Commissioner of Police knows that the chairman of a local government has no space under the Electoral Act to be informed and secure permission to campaign in his local government,” Orogu said.

He claimed that the PDP was the first to make its campaign schedule known and wondered why the All Progressives Congress (APC) were insisting on starting their campaign from the same local government area on the same day.

The chairman noted that PDP had initially slated Nov. 26, to start its electioneering campaign in the state but had to shift it to Nov. 28, when they heard APC plans to begin same day, “only to be told now that the new date is also not feasible after spending resources and time preparing for the event.”

Also speaking, Mr Labaran Maku, Director-General of PDP Campaign Council expressed deep disappointment over the development and called for absolute neutrality from security agencies.

“It is strange that 48 hours to go to our campaign rally, we suddenly received this letter despite the fact that our party was the first to notify the police of our campaign schedule,” he said.

Maku said that after consultations the leaders of the party and the campaign council had agreed to reschedule the party’s campaign flag off in Toto Local Government Area to Nov. 29.

“We are giving the Nigeria Police Force the benefit of the doubt that we are law abiding but we hope the remaining schedule will not be disrupted.

“We appeal to our supporters especially those in Toto to be law abiding in spite of what has happened,” he said.

Responding, DSP Ramhan Nansel, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nasarawa State Command, refuted the allegation that the police had directed the PDP to stop plans for its campaign flag off rally in Toto LGA on Nov. 28.

He said that there was a clash of date and location with the APC and CP Mohammed-Baba, only advised the PDP to shift its rally to the next day in order to avert clashes among supporters, and to adequately provide security to both parties for their campaign rallies.

“So, it is for the sake of providing adequate security for the two political parties that the police adviced PDP to shift theirs to the next day. It is not as if they were outrightly stopped or prevented,” he said. (NAN)

Sanwo-Olu, who described marketers as “important stakeholders” in the governance of the state, said the visit was part of his wide consultation ahead of the general elections, noting that the interaction with traders in the informal sector was strategic in reaching out to the grassroots.

The Governor, reassured the market leaders of his administration’s commitment to their well-being and asked for their full cooperation as to their support for the APC in the coming elections.

He said: “Market leaders and their members are important stakeholders in the governance of Lagos. We interact with them from time to time and consult them on issues concerning growth of our markets. Today, we have come here to thank them for the support they have continued to give our Government and to encourage them to continue to be loyal citizens of the State.

“This venue has been a strategic meetinghouse for discussion with market leaders on socio-political issues. It was from this same house that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu left and was sworn in as the Governor of Lagos in 1999. Since then, this edifice has been the spot of convergence for all the market leadership in Lagos. The visit today is to reassure market men and women about our commitment to their well-being and to ensure we have their full cooperation as to their support for the progressives party.”

Sanwo-Olu told the traders that the Government had hastened up ongoing work to complete all the markets currently being constructed.

He announced continuation of credit grants to 100 micro and small businesses in each market across the state, stressing that the intervention had empowered many women and low-income households to meet their needs.

Sanwo-Olu, seized the opportunity to reel out achievements of his administration in education, transportation and health, among others, saying they were aimed at improving the lives of residents, regardless of their incomes and status.

“We are in the season of politics and we consider it necessary to meet with our people in the market and solicit for your support in the forthcoming general elections, especially for our presidential candidate, governorship candidate and other positions our party is vying.

“This is an important step, you are part of the crop of people that diligently wait at the polling booths to cast votes for our party. We cannot take you for granted, despite having new people in the electoral register. We need to engage and talk to you about our plans. In this case, we are seeking their support for all our candidates in general,” he said.

The traders, in the course of the discussion, raised issues affecting them and advised the state government on possible areas of improvement and collaboration.

Iyaloja-General, Tinubu-Ojo, assured the Governor of market leaders’ continued support for the party, pledging to mobilise members of their households and communities to vote en-masse for APC in the state and at the federal election.

Politics / Why PDP Need To Negotiate With Peter Obi, Wike — Fayose by leethebee: 9:12pm On Nov 18, 2022
A former governor of Ekiti, Ayodele Fayose said the People’s Democratic Party, PDP need to negotiate with the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi and Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state.

Fayose stated this while speaking in an interview with Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday.

According to Fayose, Obi and Wike could affect the chances of the PDP in the 2023 polls.

“Reconciling or negotiating with Obi will be a good thing and finding a way to make peace with these Wike people will be a good thing too,” he said.

Fayose said the former Anambra governor may not secure the required 25 percent of votes in two-third of the states to be declared winner.

The former Ekiti governor asked the PDP to negotiate with Obi, and also resolve the crisis in the party by reconciling with the camp of Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, in order to win the presidency.

He said, “Obi is a danger to watch out for. I don’t believe Obi will make 25 percent of votes in two-third of the states of the federation.

“I’m not against Obi. I love him and he is a very vibrant leader. I don’t believe he will get the required 25 percent of votes because of my permutations as Ayodele Fayose, but with God, nothing shall be impossible.

“Let me say Obi is more of a chronic cancer to PDP and there is no denying,” he said.

Meanwhile, Fayose also expressed fears over the chances of the PDP winning the South-West and South-East regions of the country in the forthcoming 2023 presidential election.

He said, “Let me give you an analysis. In South-West, people might not like to hear that, I don’t see how PDP will win. Anybody deceiving us can continue to deceive us.

“I don’t see how PDP will win in the South-East. South-south will be a combination of all interests. Let me come to the key states of the north.

“Without deceiving ourselves, there is so much work to do in the north-central. PDP and APC did not pick any candidate, either presidential or vice-presidential, from the north-central. The North-East is where the vice-presidential candidate of APC comes from.

“We will give Adamawa state to our party. Don’t forget there is still another Kwankwaso who is a semi-cancer that can equally upstage figures in the north,” he said.

Politics / Alleged Certificate Forgery: Tinubu Faces Fresh Suit, As Lawyer Seeks His Trial by leethebee: 2:58pm On Nov 16, 2022
Barely 24 hours after he flagged-off his 2023 presidential election campaign, candidate of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, is facing fresh suits that are seeking his prosecution for allegedly lying on oath.

A constitutional lawyer, Mr. Mike Enahoro-Ebah, has entered direct criminal complaints against him, before an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court sitting at Wuse Zone 6.

The legal practitioner, in processes he filed before the court, alleged that the APC presidential flag-bearer, engaged in age falsification and certificate forgery.

Tinubu was cited as the sole defendant in three separate suits marked: CR/121/2022, CR/122/2022 and CR/123/2022, which the complainant lodged before the court pursuant to sections 88(1), 89(3), 109(A), 110(C), 115(1)(B) and 119 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015, as well as section 6(6)(a) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

Specifically, the litigant, told the court that evidence at his disposal, revealed that Tinubu lied on oath in an affidavit he swore to and attached in support of the Form EC-9 he submitted to the Independent National Electrical Commission, INEC, on June 17, in aid of his qualification to contest the impending presidential election.

He alleged that Tinubu, presented “a forged Chicago State University Certificate to INEC with intent that it may be acted upon as genuine, thereby committed the offence of forgery contrary to Sections 362(a), 363 and 364 of the Penal Code Act, Cap. 532, Laws of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.”

Enahoro-Ebah filed the processes through his colleague, Mr. Mathew J. Kowals, a Chicago-based legal practitioner, who had earlier issued a attorney subpoena on his behalf, against the University, in case number: 22-L-007289 on August 12.

Kowals had in the subpoena, directed the school to mail him all documents and records in their possession that pertains to Tinubu and his educational qualifications.

Can Bola Tinubu win the 2023 Presidential Election? BET NOW on www.naijabet.com

In his suit, Enahoro-Ebah, told the court that copies of Certificate from Chicago State University, academic records, undergraduate admission application form, University of Cambridge General Certificate of Education, and copy of Southwest College Transcript (now City College of Chicago), were later sent to him which he attached to the court documents as exhibits.

According to him, “Curiously, the information contained in the documents and school records received from Chicago State University, contradict material information provided by the defendant in his sworn Form EC-9 submitted to INEC”.

He alleged that the Bola Tinubu that attended Chicago State University was born in 1954 and not 1952 as the APC presidential candidate claimed on oath in the Form EC-9 he submitted to INEC.

More so, the litigant, further alleged that the copy of the Chicago State University Certificate released by the school was “radically different” from the copy that was attached to the form in INEC’s possession.

He averred that a direct comparison of both certificates, revealed different dates of issue by the University- June 22, 1979 and June 27, 1979- adding that there was different university logos on both certificates; different grammatical construction on faces of the certificates, as well as different signatures.

The lawyer equally told the court that in support of the defendant’s undergraduate admission application form submitted to Chicago State University in 1977, was a transcript from Southwest College, Chicago, bearing the name, “Tinubu Bola A”, which belonged to a female student, contrary to Form EC-9 submitted to INEC which indicated that Tinubu is a man.

He contended that the Tinubu that attended the University, indicated in his undergraduate admission application form that he graduated from Government College, Lagos, in 1970, while the defendant in his Form EC-9 submitted to INEC provided no information as to his attendance of the said secondary school.

Consequently, Enahoro-Ebah, maintained that it would be in the best interest of Nigeria, justice and equity, for criminal summons to be issued, to enable Tinubu to appear before the court to clear himself.

Though the suits have been assigned to Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna, however, no date has been fixed for them to be heard.

Politics / Politicians Are Friends After ‘national Cake,’ Don’t Die For Them – Kukah by leethebee: 11:27am On Nov 15, 2022
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah said politicians are all friends struggling to have a share of the ‘national cake.’

Kukah made this assertion in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday.

According to Kukah, opposition politicians are friends and shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

The cleric’s assertion comes hours after the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; and his Peoples Democratic Party, PDP counterpart, Atiku Abubakar, bantered at the private wing of the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday.

Kukah, the Convener of the National Peace Committee, said supporters of political parties should learn a lesson from the public exchange of pleasantries between Tinubu and Atiku.

He said the message from the banter is that political loyalists of both frontline presidential candidates for the 2023 election should be wise, eschew violence and not kill themselves for people drinking from the same pool.

The cleric cautioned loyalists of politicians not to kill themselves in demonstrating support for their candidates.

He said, “These politicians are struggling and they’ve lived their lives struggling for the national cake which they will distribute amongst themselves. It is therefore in the interest of ordinary Nigerians to know that they have to vote to stay alive.

“Supporters of candidates all over the country need to be a bit more restrained and wise. We ordinary people must figure out how to manage our passion when it comes to politics. Don’t take seriously the grandstanding of the politicians.

“All the things you see about them abusing themselves or quarreling, you will think they will never shake hands. They are very good friends, and many of them drink from the same pool. So, don’t go and kill yourself for nothing. That is what that message is all about,” he said.

Politics / 2023: Actions Of Political Actors Worrisome — Nat’l Peace Committee by leethebee: 10:02pm On Nov 14, 2022
THE National Peace Committee has expressed concern over what it called “the deterioration in the communication of fundamental issues among the politicians since the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, lifted the ban on political campaigns on September 28th, 2022. “

The committee in a statement, tagged:”Towards Peaceful Election Campaigns”, released Monday evening, said its members have watched with utter sadness and deep concern, the actions of candidates and political parties since suspension on campaigns was lifted by INEC.

In the statement signed by Most Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah and General Abdulsalami Abubakar,Converner and Chairman, National Peace Committee, respectively, the committee regretted that despite committing themselves to upholding peace before, during and after the general elections, by signing its initiated peace accord, candidates and their political parties have not kept to their tenets of the peace accord.

It reminded them that Nigerians expected that as men and women of honour, they were committed to keeping their words.

According to the committee,”The political actors cannot pretend to be oblivious of the content of the Peace Accord that they signed.”

The statement read in full:” The Members of the National Peace Committee, NPC, have watched with utter sadness and deep concern, the deterioration in the communication of fundamental issues among the politicians since the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, lifted the ban on political campaigns on September 28th, 2022.

“A day after the ban was lifted and in response to a call by the NPC, the Presidential Candidates and their running mates met and participated in the signing of the Peace Accord at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

“Since its successful outing preceding the 2015 Presidential Elections, the signing of the Peace Accord has become embedded in our electioneering campaigns.

” Over the years, the event has elevated the level of trust and confidence among ordinary Nigerians in the Democratic process. Some have even called for the institutionalisation of the process into our democratic process due to its moral significance.

“The NPC has continued to maintain its partnership with the INEC to deliver peaceful elections in our country. The international community has taken very keen interest in the development and progress of our country on the path of democracy.

” For this reason, the NPC has continued to work with and receive high level delegations from Europe and the United States of America interested our elections. Their passion, concerns and commitment in our democracy are genuine and we find this very encouraging. We should therefore know that the world is watching us.

“We appreciate the fact that the President and Commander in Chief, President Muhammadu Buhari in collaboration with the National Assembly have shown their commitment to ensuring the successful elections.

” On our part, we, the members of the Peace Committee, are also encouraged by the progress and innovation that INEC has continued to make under the leadership of Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

“All Nigerians can testify to this development by the successes recorded in the peaceful conduct of the off-cycle elections in Edo, Ondo, Anambra, Ekiti and Osun states. We are not where we want to be yet, but we are right to assume that we can do more.

“Nigerians are genuinely concerned, troubled and disappointed by the conduct and attitude of some of the political actors in the last few weeks.

” Nigerians have been fed a menu of intemperate language, intimidation and outright violence in the field of the campaigns.

“It is evident that some of our actors have not learnt any lessons from the past. There is an increasing tone of desperation, if not incitement, among some of the contestants and members of their parties.

” Intra and inter party wranglings still persist, with occasions of violence. In desperation, some selfish political actors use these strategies to pursue their frivolous ambitions in the courts.

“When all the Presidential candidates and the Party Chairmen signed the Peace Accord, they were committed to infusing a sense of decency, civility and nobility in the political process.

“The political actors cannot pretend to be oblivious of the content of the Peace Accord that they signed. Nigerians expect that as men and women of honour, they were committed to keeping their words.

“The Security agencies have continued to do their best as they monitor security developments across the country. We continue to encourage them to ensure that the right environment is created for, peaceful elections. During the signing of the Peace Accord, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Baba Usman called attention to the fact that the federal government does not recognize any of the many security outfits that have mushroomed across the country. We call on the law enforcement agencies to enforce the law with the understanding that everyone will be held accountable for their actions, no matter their status.

” We wish to call on the Media to remain focused in managing information. The social media is with us and it can be a tool for good if only we decide to use it for peaceful purposes. Citizens must be more discreet in the kind of information that they circulate on various platforms. Individuals must take responsibility for what they read. We encourage the Youth to be more restrained and to use their numbers well so as to guard their future.

“We call on all the candidates to rein in their Spokespersons and those who claim to represent them and their parties in the public media. All candidates will be held responsible for what is said on their behalf or of their party. Aggressive and abusive language only diminishes the integrity of the individuals, their candidates and their parties. Nigerians should be ready to punish instigators of violence by isolating them or their candidates.

“We call on the federal and state governments to ensure a level playing field for all parties in the course of the campaigns. Access to federal or state facilities must be open to all candidates as long as they meet their financial and other commitments to using the facilities. It is morally wrong to abuse the power of incumbency by subverting the efforts of those who are in opposition to the status quo. Parties and citizens do not lose their rights because they are opposed to the party in power. All citizens are above political parties.

“Finally, we call on fellow citizens to appreciate the global trends around the world and Africa and their impact on the future where resources are becoming scarce. Nigerians must appreciate the huge resources committed to elections and do everything possible to ensure its integrity. May God the creator of Heaven and earth continue to guide our country and hear our prayers for peace, prosperity, and progress.”

Politics / APC, LP Lose More Ground As Thousands Defect To PDP In Taraba by leethebee: 5:49pm On Nov 13, 2022
The Weekend was not the best of times for the All Progressive Congress, APC, and the Labour Party, LP in Taraba state as thousands of its supporters reportedly decamped to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the Southern Senatorial zone.

It was gathered that the wave of defections also affected other political parties with presence in the five local government areas in Taraba South.

The defectors estimated at 11,000 jumped ship on Saturday at the Senatorial Campaign flag-off of incumbent governor, Darius Ishaku in Wukari.

The gubernatorial candidate of the PDP, Kefas Agbu and his LP counterpart, Joel Ikenya, are both from Wukari LGA in Taraba South.

Former Deputy Senate Minority leader, Emmanuel Bwacha, who is currently appealing the decision of Federal High Court, Jalingo that nullified the gubernatorial primary election of the APC which made him the candidate of the party is also from Donga LGA in Taraba South.

While reactions are still being expected from the camps of the opposition with the wave of defections that swept across the southern zone, political watchers have predicted more would follow as campaign reaches its crescendo in the coming weeks.

It was also gathered that the ill-preparedness of LP for the task ahead and the plethora of litigations in the APC might count against their gains in a state like Taraba that has always been won by the PDP.

However, many watchers of the political scene in the state are still hoping that other political parties can still give the PDP a run for its money if they are proactive enough to reach out to first time voters before balloting.

Jones added that the government was also doing something different by going the way of technical and vocational education.

”Today, we have inspected ongoing construction projects of GYB Model science secondary school, Iruvucheva in Okene, Government Technical College, Oboroke in Okehi, and we are here at GYB Model science school, Okebukun in Kabba/Bunu LGA.

”The other one we have not visited is located at Government Technical College, Idah.

”We are using a stone to kill several birds with the siting of a model science secondary school within a technical college.

”This will enable our students that attend the school to have access to technical and vocational training as well as very deep science education,” he said.

Jones noted that government would not build the University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), and not make effort to ensure that graduates from Kogi schools were eminently qualified to be admitted into the university.

”This is why the governor has seen that we need to strengthen the existing technical and science schools and also establish new ones.

”So that at the end of the day, we will have a good pool of students that can be absorbed into our universities.

”When you plan and prepare very well, the only result you get is success,” Jones said. (NAN)

The Benue State Governor stressed that “our passion is how can we make things work here in Nigeria by being disciplined,” adding: “It is not about ourselves; it is not about our ego; it is about what we would do to turn around things and ensure the rule of law, due process and integrity in what we do, so that we will have other people visiting us, so that there will be security, so that our economy will be on the right path.”

Pointing out that proffering solutions to the present situation of Nigeria is beyond political affiliation, Gov. Ortom harped on the need for all hands to join together to make the country work for the interest of the people.

“The challenge is that we can see that we are going beneath the bottom. But by the Grace of God we will all put our hands together. It is not just President Buhari, it is not just about political parties, APC, PDP and all other ones, but it is how can we come together and cause things to work for our country, Nigeria.

“God has blessed us. We have everything that is needed to make Nigeria not just the giant of Africa but also the giant of the world if we are able to put ourselves together and work together for our common interest,” he said.

Gov. Ortom on behalf of the G5 Governors, appreciated Gov. Ugwuanyi and stakeholders of Enugu State present at the dinner including the Deputy Governor, Hon. Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi, the PDP State Chairman, Hon. Augustine Nnamani, the PDP governorship candidate, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, his running mate, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, and the Director General, PDP State Campaign Organisation, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, for their hospitality and support and promised that the governors will reciprocate the gesture during the flag off of the PDP state campaign in Enugu.

“We are grateful once again. God bless you and may God continue to bless this union of G5,” he added.

Politics / PDP Crisis: Makinde’s Stand Not For Selfish Reason — Ayorinde by leethebee: 4:32pm On Nov 10, 2022
The gubernatorial candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2019 governorship election in Oyo State, a legal luminary, Chief Bolaji Ayorinde, has said that Governor Makinde’s agitation in the Peoples Democratic Party debacle, was not for selfish reason, but asking for fairness, equity justice among the geo-political zones in Nigeria.

The legal luminary stated this while addressing journalists in Ibadan yesterday on the crisis rocking the leadership of the party on the sharing of positions.

Chief Ayorinde explained the reason of the aggrieved G-5 governor’s as seeking for proper restructuring of the party in oder for all the component part of the country to have a sense of belonging.

He added that the agitation of the G-5 governor’s is not about fighting for their personal benefit or gain but they are asking for situation whereby the party would have a strong footing and all the members will have a sense of belonging.

When he was quizzed on the chances of Governor Makinde at the forthcoming general elections in the state, Ayorinde noted that Makinde’s performance would speak for him from what he has been able to deliver in his first term to the people of the state.

He said: “First of all you have to appreciate the position of the G-5. Personally, I do not think they are agitating for themselves. You see, they are in a political party where they are calling into question the current structure of the party.”

“It is not Governor Makinde who wants to be the chairman of PDP, it is not Ortom or Governor Wike not at all.”

“The point they make is that if PDP cannot be properly structured as a party, if they win election how will they restructure Nigeria? So that all the component part of this country will have a sense of belonging.”

“And the morning shows the afternoon not to talk of the night that is their agitations.”

“I hope people can see that it is not about their personal benefit or gain from whatever is happening in the party but they want a situation whereby they are able their party on a strong footing so that Nigerians particularly the party members from the south can have a sense of belonging.

“As to the chances of the governor himself, he will be judged by his own performance, so I don’t see the spelling of doom, there is no doom.”

“And if you look at character of the governor, he doesn’t appear like he is a desperate person, he has won election in the past, he has lost, and when he won, he had staged the course, he had set out his objectives and he is doing his best and the results are very clear.”

“You see the fact that he is involved in agitation, for a best structure for his party, it does not mean that he himself or his party in the state may not do well; they are different elections and gone are the days when there were band wagon effects. Those days are gone people would vote on the presidential election day as they wished.”

“People would vote for governor as they wish, so I don’t see that issue as a problem.”

“I think for us here, we must not see politics as end, one thing that is beginning to wane among the Yoruba’s is education, that was our pride, education.”

“When you are well educated the sky is the limit as they say, that is when you can produce intellectuals who can in turn lift your economy, lift your science, lift your arts ensure that you have a decent society, so even going to election what is our stand on education, it is education that allow you and I to have intelligent conversation.”

“So going forward 2023 let us continue to educate ourselves, when we are very educated we will make the right choice,” he said.

Politics / Labour Party Signs Undertaking, As Peter Obi Campaigns In Aba by leethebee: 1:03pm On Nov 10, 2022
Following the disagreement between the Abia State government and the state chapter of the Labour Party over the use of the Ngwa High School, Aba, for its rally, the Labour Party has signed an undertaking to maintain peace during the event.

The presidential candidate of the party, Mr. Peter Obi, billed to attend the rally on Thursday (Today) where the governorship candidate, Dr. Alex Otti, would present his manifesto.

The Abia state government had in a letter signed by the Commissioner for Post Basic Education, Chief Israel Mark, asked the party to change the date of the rally or seek an alternative venue for the event as the school would be in session during the rally.

The government stated that the 8.00am time fixed for the rally would interfere with academic activities at the school, adding that the state would be setting a bad precedent by chasing away school children and teachers in order to hold political rallies that could also predispose school properties to vandalization.

However, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, Media Assistant to the Governorship aspirant of the party in the state, Dr. Alex Otti, said that there will be no academic activities at Ngwa High School as the school is on midterm break. He accused the state government of trying to frustrate the rally.

The state leadership of the party had met with the Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Mohammed Bala ,and signed an undertaking to maintain peace at the rally in Aba.

In a letter addressed to the Commissioner of Police and signed by the Abia State chairman of the Labour Party, Hon. Ceekay Igara, the party pledged to maintain peace and good conduct during the rally.

“Sequel to the meeting held with the Labour Party Leaders and the Commissioner of Police Abia State Command on Wednesday, 09/11/2022 and the resolution agreed upon, we hereby resolve to maintain peace and good conducts all through the duration of our campaign rally at Ngwa High School Aba on Thursday, 10th November, 2022,” the letter read in part.

Politics / Ogun PDP Crisis: Jimi Lawal Writes EFCC, ICPC, Denies Forging Delegates List by leethebee: 11:53pm On Nov 09, 2022
A governorship aspirant in Ogun State on the platform of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Jimi Lawal, has written a letter to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), denied forging delegates’ list in the lead up to the party’s primary election held in May, this year.

Lawal stated this in his response to the petition to the anti-graft agencies, through his lawyer, Deji Enisenyin.

Lawal, who recently won a rescheduled court-ordered primary election, said there was no way he could forge a list monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission throughout the wards of the state.

It would be recalled that the Ladi Adebutu’s camp announced through the state party machinery that it has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate alleged forgery of delegates list against INEC officials and Lawal.

“Our services have been retained as a firm of Solicitors by Otunba Jimi Lawal, (hereinafter referred to as our Client) and on his behalf we communicate this letter to you,” in response to the petition against Lawal stated.

“Our Client’s attention has been drawn to two petitions written by a lawyer for the Peoples Democratic Party (P.D.P.) to the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (E.F.C.C.), on the one hand, affirming, among other things- that our client forged a delegate result to be used in the Ogun State PDP governorship primary election.

“The content of the said letter also has it that the document were forged and a counterfeit document produced by our Client’s hideous agenda to deceive/manipulate etc.

The content of the letter further reads thus: “Our client is of the belief that considering the years of service of the INEC officials involved, both of them knew for sure that the purported delegate result presented by Mr. Jimi Lawal was forged, but still went ahead to collect, transmit and officially acknowledge the same document with reckless impunity’.”

Lawal through his lawyer also noted that, “Counsel to PDP on the other hand further wrote to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (I.N.E.C.) asserting among other things that ‘…a deliberate and criminal suppression of the P.D.P. 2022 authentic delegate result list with a view to fraudulently substitute the original document with an unlawful delegate result…’ the letters referred to above have been written at the instance of the PDP and former member of the House of Representatives, Mr Ladi Adebutu in a bid to divert the attention of the three government agencies and the general public from the truth and reality on ground”.

“Our Client denies ever involving in perjury, forgery, colluding or inducing public officials (INEC officials)”.

“The immediate reaction of our client to the letters is that the PDP and Mr Ladi Adebutu are beginning to see reality that they can run but cannot hide in view of the cogent and the verifiable evidence on the issues at hand”.

“As confirmed by the PDP’s lawyer in the letter dated 27th of October, 2022 to the Chairman of I.N.E.C., the issue of the party governorship primary election was a subject of litigation in a suit number: FHC/ABJ/CS/—/2022 between Otunba Jimi Lawal v. Peoples Democratic Party; Mr. Ladi Adebutu and Independent National Electoral Commission and suit number FHC/AB/CS/87/2022 between Olabode Taiwo Idris & 2ors v. Peoples Democratic Party and 6 ors.”

Continuing, the reply to the allegation stated that: “the two cases mentioned above are presently on appeal before the appellate Courts at different stages, there is therefore no essence to comment on them. It is elementary knowledge that once litigants have submitted their grievances to a Court of competent jurisdiction, the issues so submitted before the Court becomes subjudice for all intent and purposes. So, why comment on it?

“Our Client has however considered it necessary to make a rejection to the malicious letters cum publication to the reasonable members of the public not to fall victim of the false information”.

“It is on record that in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/ /2022 between Otunba Jimi Lawal v. Peoples Democratic Party and 2 ors, the P.D.P. and Mr. Ladi Adebutu in their responses filed to the summons of client, claimed that statutory delegates were delegates that voted in the governorship primary election the party has decided to recognise. For the purpose of clarity the Electoral Act, 2022 never envisaged statutory delegates to vote in any primary election for any aspirant”.

“The P.D.P. had congress throughout the federation to produce delegates to vote in the primary election of the party held on the 30th of April, 2022. During that exercise in Ogun State, I.N.E.C. monitored the delegate congress in line with provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022. I.N.E.C. issued a report on the delegate congress monitored”.

“The delegates that emerged during the delegate congress were not statutory delegates. The Electoral Act, 2022 never envisaged statutory delegate”.

“A former federal lawmaker in his processes filed to defend the illegality in suit no FHC/ABJ/CS/773/2022 has exhibited on oath that statutory delegates voted for him during the 25th May, 2022 primary election. One does not need a legal practitioner to interpret the consequence of such election. The party is bound to recognise the votes of the delegates that emerged during the delegates congress, as monitored by I.N.E.C. at the primary election”.

“This is the position of the Supreme Court in the cases of Amaechi v. I.N.E.C. Appeal number SC/252/2007 Per Oguntade, J.S.C. (para 44-45) under section 85 of the Electoral Act , 2006, it is mandatory that political parties inform I.NE.C. of the date and time of holding convention summoned for the purpose of nominating candidates for any of the elective offices under the Electoral Act, 2006. If parties were not to be bound by the results of their party primaries in the nomination of the candidates at any level, why would it be necessary for Independent National Electoral Commission (I.N.E.C.) representative to be present and monitor the proceedings of such congress”.

“It seems that the obligation on the parties to inform INEC of such congress was to ensure that INEC would know and keep a record of candidates who are at the primaries”.

“The elected delegates at the ward congress never voted for Mr. Ladi Adebutu, Statutory delegates did. INEC never monitored any congress, or sitting of the PDP where statutory delegates were recognised to vote in the party primaries. Such is ultra vires the provision of the Electoral Act, 2022 and null and void howsoever”.

“The relevant question the lawyer to PDP ought to ask his client based on the party’s position in the letter under rejoinder, which were not canvassed or argued during any of the Court proceedings, is that at what stage did the suppression come up?”

“Going by the showing of the party, statutory delegates who voted for Mr. Adebutu is the one they prefer to recognise. (It is understandable anyway, the largess from lottery is still coming in.)

We have waited till now to make this response as a result of the need to conduct necessary research to know the relevant section of the statute that provided for deliberate and criminal suppression. our client shall be willing to defend himself where the section is established in our extant laws.

“We have the instruction of our client to inform his adversary that he has his eyes on the ball no amount of distraction by the adversary will stop him from pursuing his Court cases to a logical conclusion, as he is ready to abide by the final and last decision of these issues presently before the Court.”

Politics / ‘udom Emmanuel Not Resigning-atiku-okowa Presidential Campaign Council’ by leethebee: 7:29pm On Nov 08, 2022
The Presidential Campaign Council of the Peoples Democratic Party, has dismissed speculations that the Chairman of the Council, Gov. Udom Emmanuel, was contemplating resigning his position.

The Atiku/Okowa Campaign Council described the speculations as “baseless rumours.”

Spokesperson for the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Organization, Kola Ologbondiyan, said this in Abuja, on Tuesday.

He said, “The rumour being bandied to suggest that the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, resigned or contemplated to resign his appointment as the Chairman of the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Council is fake news.

“Our Campaign assures Nigerians as well as all pro-democracy and development partners that such idea is not in the contemplation of the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Emmanuel.

“Governor Udom Emmanuel, this afternoon at the Flag-off of the PDP Governorship Campaign which held at the Nest of Champions Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Capital, declared that the rumour is a lie “from the pit of hell” and that he remains the Chairman of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council.

“The appointment of Governor Emmanuel as Chairman of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council was predicated on his belief and commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the ideals of our founding fathers as well as his unwavering confidence in our Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, as the leader that has the required capacity to lead the charge to rescue and rebuild our nation. “

He noted that Governor Emmanuel is effectively and committedly leading a successful campaign that will take our Party to victory and will not be distracted by the wishful thinking of the enemies of Nigeria.

Ologbondiyan said, “The Atiku/Okowa Campaign therefore urges Nigerians to ignore such shenanigans and fake news coming from the enemies of our nation who are desirous of causing confusion in the polity with a view to derailing the electoral process.

“We caution those behind this wicked rumour to desist from such and know that they are fighting a lost battle as Nigerians across board are already rallying with the PDP and cannot be swayed by fake news.”

Politics / Wike Should Be Kicked Out Of PDP – Ned Nwoko by leethebee: 8:12pm On Nov 07, 2022
The candidate of People’s Democratic Party, PDP for Delta North senatorial district (Anioma), Ned Nwoko has said Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state should be kicked out of the party.

Nwoko made this remark on Monday at the Asaba airport while returning from Abuja.

According to him, Wike has constituted nuisance to the PDP.

He added that Rivers state governor has done a lot of damage to the party and should be shown the way out.

He said, “Wike is a nuisance, quote me anywhere. If I were [in] the leadership of the party, I would have acted differently. I would have done things differently. He has done a lot of damage to the PDP and I don’t know what they are waiting for to show him the way out.”

The governors have also boycotted the campaign rallies of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

But, on Sunday evening, Governor Ortom at the Makurdi Airport, received Governors Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu and Seyi Makinde of Oyo state for commissioning of projects in the state.

It was the first time the five influential governors were meeting as a group in Benue State.

It was gathered that aside commissioning of projects, the five governors would also hold scheduled routine meetings to fine tune their strategies ahead of the 2023 elections.

The five governors held a meeting at the recently commissioned Ape Aku Lodge ahead of the State Banquet put together by the Benue state government.

Politics / 2023 Election: INEC Assures Of Inclusion Of Pwds by leethebee: 6:27pm On Nov 07, 2022
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured persons living with disabilities (PWDs) of total inclusiveness in the 2023 general elections.

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers, Dr Johnson Sinikiem, gave the assurance at a voter sensitisation workshop for PWDs in the South-South zone, tagged: ‘Able2Vote.’

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was jointly organised by Albino Foundation and European Union.

Represented by INEC’s Administrative Secretary in Rivers, Mr Richter Alabraba, Sinikiem said that the commission would make available assistive devices to aid impaired voters at the polling units.

“The assistive devices include: braille ballot guide, magnifying glasses and posters for the deaf to ensure the participation of persons living with disabilities in the election.

“We will not relent in our effort at ensuring PWDs’ inclusivity in the electoral process before, during and after the elections.

“So, we are making every effort to ensure that their needs are provided by the commission, to aid them in the elections,” he said.

Sinikiem said that the commission was also putting measures in place to ensure that physically-challenged voters were given express attention at the pooling units.

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Albino Foundation, Jake Epelle, said that the foundation felt concerned over the treatment faced by PWDs at the polling units.

He said that the foundation, in collaboration with the European Union, decided to bring together leaders of PWDs in the South-South zone to learn of INEC’s programme for them.

“So, our job is to ensure the inclusiveness of persons living with disabilities, to enable them participate fully in the electoral process.

“All we want is absolute inclusion of PWDs in every aspect of the election process, as any democratic process that is void of inclusivity is a total rape on democracy.

“We are not only fighting for inclusion but also to develop necessary tools that will make the inclusion a reality,” he added.

Epelle commended INEC for rolling out guidelines to guarantee inclusivity of PWDs at the forthcoming polls.

Responding, Chairman of PWDs in Rivers, Mr Kie Obomanu, commended the electoral umpire for its moves to provide a level-playing ground for physically challenged people during the elections.

Politics / 2023 Elections: I Will Send Old Nigerian Politicians To Retirement Homes by leethebee: 6:45pm On Nov 05, 2022
Wizkid, a Nigerian superstar, has vowed to retire older Nigerian politicians at the upcoming 2023 polls.

Wizkid, made the remarks during an interview with UK-based media outlet, The Guardian.

While calling on Nigerians to speak up against people in government, the Essence crooner said, “I’m about to go crazy on their asses this election. All these old men are going out of power this time. They need to go to an old people’s home and chill out.”

Advising older politicians to leave the political scene, the Grammy award winner vowed to pressurise them out of power in next year’s general election.

He stated there is nothing worth celebrating in the country except for individual achievements of peoples in the sports, entertainment and comedy industries.

He continued: “There’s nothing to celebrate [in Nigeria] except that [Nigerians] are amazing people in music, sports, comedy – entertainment in general. I’m proud of young Nigerians doing things around the world in tech. I have amazing friends, doing amazing things.”

Wizkid added, “That’s it, though. There’s nothing else. But I feel hopeful there’ll be change. How soon? I’m not sure. But a lot has changed from growing up to now.

“There was a time when you could never speak to the president or anyone in government like that. But now you have a voice.”

Politics / Economic Hardship: Apologise To Nigerians – Group Advises APC by leethebee: 11:55pm On Nov 04, 2022
The Campaign for Equal Rights and Opportunities for all Nigerians, CERON, has asked the All Progressives Congress, APC, to apologise to Nigerians for failing to deliver on its promises and the biting economic downtown in the country.

The group maintained that Nigerians are passing through severe hardship amid rising inflation which has rendered their meagre earnings worthless.

Speaking on the continuous slide of the Naira since the coming of the present administration, Secretary of CERON, Francis Odiir regretted that the economic policies of the APC-led Federal Government had failed to build on the gains of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, led government that exited in 2015.

He noted that “the APC gave Nigerians high hopes after making promises that they would surpass the achievements of the PDP, but today we are all feeling the brunt of the failed economic policies that have left Nigerians poorer than they had ever imagine.

“Today the Nigerian Naira has hit 800 to the Dollar and the masses are finding it very difficult to afford very essential communities amid rise inflation. Even a bag of local rice now goes for as high as N35,000 and nobody cares that Nigerians are suffering.

Who will win the 2023 Presidential election in Nigeria? Bet Now on www.naijabet.com

“Just few days ago the government from no where came up with the policy of redesigning the Naira for reasons best known to them, not minding the implication of that policy which even the ordinary man in the street knows will hit hard on the value of the Naira and further worsening the hardship in the country; a development that has left many wondering if this government is on a mission to make life unbearable for Nigerians.

“Today it is to the credit of this government that Nigerian students have lost close to two years to ASUU strike because the government allowed the strike to linger. And even after calling off the strike last month, the government has refused to pay them their salaries as promised leaving the lectures with the option of calling out its members again.

“This government must be told that Nigerians are hungry and very angry. The policies of this government have taken Nigerians several years backward and it will take years to get the country back to the pre-APC era.

“That is to tell us that the incoming administrator must be prepared to work very hard to get country working again so that Nigerians can smile again because the country is in comatose. The rate of poverty in the land is alarming, the APC should tender an apology to Nigerians for the kind of pains their policies have inflicted on the people in the last seven years.”

Politics / Court Dismisses Suit Seeking To Sack Abia PDP Candidates by leethebee: 10:18pm On Nov 04, 2022
The Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia, Friday, struck out a suit seeking to nullify the three-man delegate adhoc congress of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Abia State.

Seven of the delegates, Mr Ndudi Nwagbara, had approached the court to challenge the party’s ward congress, alleging that the purported congresses never held.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC; the PDP; and the party’s National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, were the first, second and third defendants respectively.

The plaintiffs, among other prayers, sought “A declaration that the purported PDP Ward three (3) Ad-Hoc Delegate Congresses allegedly conducted in Abia State on Friday the 6th day of May 2022 is unauthorized, incompetent, unlawful, illegal, null, void, of no effect whatsoever and that no valid or competent Ward Ad-Hoc Delegates were elected thereat”.

They also sought “A declaration that as a consequence of not having held valid, lawful or competent Ward three (3) Ad-Hoc Delegates Congresses in any of the 184 Wards of Abia State, no competent, lawful or valid Primary elections have been held by the 2nd Defendant, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Abia State for the purpose of electing its candidates for the public offices of Abia State House of Assembly, Abia State Governor, House of Representatives and Senate representing Abia State at the National Assembly.”

Other prayers of the plaintiffs include:” An order voiding, nullifying, and setting aside the incompetent, invalid and unlawful PDP Ward three (3) Ad-Hoc Delegate Congresses allegedly conducted in Abia State on Friday the 6th day of May 2022.

“An order setting aside nullifying and voiding the primary elections of the 2nd Defendant, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held for the public offices of Abia State House of Assembly, Abia State Governor, House of Representatives and Senate representing Abia State at the National Assembly held without conduct of valid and competent PDP Ward three (3) Ad-Hoc Delegate Congresses.

Delivering judgement on the matter, presiding Judge, Justice Evelyn Anyadike, held that the conduct of party delegate congress was entirely an internal affairs of a political party and not justiceable in law.

The court held that “no law gives delegates right of action” in court to challenge the conduct of delegate congress.

According to Justice Anyadike, the suit can only be justiceable in the court if it were brought by an aspirant who participated in a primary election.

The court subsequently, dismissed the suit after resolving it in favour of the defendants, declaring that the plaintiffs lacked locus to sue.

Later in an interview with Vanguard, Counsel to the plaintiffs, Nnamdi Ahaiwe, said his clients would decide on the next line of action after a careful study of the judgement.

” You know that judgement is how the court interprets a case brought before it. We will go back and read the judgement, and after that, we will take a decision.

” The law has made provisions for other levels of adjudication because it knows that a court can be wrong. So, parties have the right to go to higher courts.”

Speaking also in an interview, one of the members of the defendants’ legal team, Professor A.B.C Agbazuere, hailed the judgement, describing it as ” copiously current and accurate”.

” It was currently and accurately decided. The court saw that it was an internal affairs of the party and should not be brought to the court. The plaintiffs were lucky the court did not award them damages.”

The immediate-past Chief of Staff to the Governor who is the PDP candidate for Isiala Ngwa North and Isiala Ngwa South federal constituency expressed delight that the plot to sack all PDP candidates for the 2023 elections in Abia did not succeed.

“They were working to remove all of us through the court like what happened in Rivers State. They came wrongly and we thank God they failed. People sponsoring them will know that we will also win them in the field”

Politics / APC Has Good Foundation For Tinubu To Run – Campaign Spokesman Ajuri by leethebee: 11:42pm On Nov 03, 2022
An Assistant Principal Spokesman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC Presidential Campaign Council, Ajuri Ngelale, says the party has built a good foundation for its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to run.

Ngelale made this assertion on Thursday in an interview on a political show on Channels Television: Politics Today.

He said, “We are proud of Buhari’s record. The next APC government will build on that good start.

“It’s an emphatic yes:’ Buhari’s administration has done well given the situation on the ground,” he added.

He added that Tinubu’s government would accelerate reforms made by the Buhari’s administration after 2023.

According to Ngelale, unlike the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the APC has a good foundation for Tinubu to run on.

He said Tinubu will be campaigning on an armament that has been conducted by the President Muhammadu Buhari in the last seven years.

Ngelale said Tinubu will build on the successful record of Buhari in the security and agricultural sectors.

“Tinubu is not Buhari, his name is not President Muhammadu Buhari. His plans will not be the same with Buhari’s, what we are saying is that Tinubu will add value to the reforms that had already been undertaken by Buhari.”

Politics / Buhari’s Ineptitude Responsible For Nigeria’s Economic Woes — PDP by leethebee: 8:03am On Nov 02, 2022
The Atiku-Okowa Presidential Campaign Organisation has blamed the dwindling value of the naira and scary security situation in the country on the ineptitude of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Director of Strategic Communication of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Presidential Campaign Council, Dele Momodu, who stated this at a media briefing, in Abuja, yesterday, said the naira was, today, taking a hit against foreign currencies, especially the United States Dollar, because the current administration had shown gross incompetence in the management of the economy.

Momodu also noted that despite denials by the Federal Government, Nigeria’s security situation remained dire.

He said: “Our candidate is deeply concerned by the cost of living crisis, which is daily worsened by the hyper inflation inflated on Nigerians by the ineptitude of the APC administration.

“We are however assuring Nigerians that help is on the way, as the policies enunciated with the policy document: ‘Our Covenant with Nigerians’, will not only bring Nigeria out of poverty but also herald an era of prosperity and sustainable development in a PDP government, come 2023.

“The Economy and the ‘Kitchen Table Issues’, as the Americans will say, remain a focal point of the PDP Recovery Agenda.”

On the issue of security, Momodu said: “The PDP and our presidential flagbearers are worried by the unabating insecurity in the country.

“The recent security alert by some foreign Embassies and Missions in Nigeria, though dismissed as unwarranted by the government, are just a reminder of the perilous time we are in at the moment.

“We call on security agencies to be at the top of their game to ensure that none of the scary scenarios painted by the security alert come to past, while we also caution Nigerians to remain vigilant.”

According to him, the depreciation of the naira is a direct consequence of the planned redesign of the nation’s currency.

“The declaration by the Central Bank of Nigeria last week that it was going to redesign some denominations in the naira as expectedly generated varied reactions from Nigerians.“

flood victims and commend their resilience and doggedness in the face of this unprecedented calamity and suffering occasioned by the disaster.““While commending those who have assisted in one way or the other to bring succour to victims, the campaign appealed to public spirited individuals to continue the good work.“Speaking on Atiku Abubakar’s recent engagement in the United States, Momudu said: “Our principal was in the United State of America where he held council meetings with officials of the U.S. Department of State.““The visit was a means of strengthening bilateral partnership with the U.S. on the economy, poverty reduction and the fight against insecurity.

“The insight gotten from the visit will arm our candidate and the PDP to deliver on its promises to the people of Nigeria when he comes into power next year through a seamless partnership with the government of the U.S. on the subject of the economy, insecurity and poverty reduction.”“Momodu also explained that the campaign council would continue to engage with the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, and his four aggrieved colleagues, with a view to winning them over.“He also dismissed an attempt to compare happenings within the PDP today to what transpired in the party in 2014 when five governors ditched the party to join the APC.“The Director noted that in 2014, Nigerians were tired of the PDP and wanted to try something new but noted that now, they had seen the difference and would want the PDP to return.“

Speaking in a similar vein, a spokesperson for the Campaign, Charles Aniagwu, explained that the campaign train had since left the station, while discussions with the five aggrieved governors were still ongoing.

” Atiku being an inlaw to the Igbos has demonstrated his desire and likeness for the Igbo as he has always picked an Igbo person as his running mate whenever he gets a presidential ticket.”

” I am also your son, hence a support for Atiku is also a support for potential Igbo presidency because the Igbo have always given their overwhelming support for the PDP and it is expected that 2023 will not be an exception.”

“Atiku has always demonstrated that he will not be a regional President but one who will unify the country regardless of tribe, ethnicity or religion.2023 is time of decision making that will either make or mar us as a nation if we vote in the wrong direction, but voting Alhaji Abubakar Atiku will certainly be the best decision for secured country” he said.

Sports / UCL: Van Bronckhorst says Rangers are not on Ajax Level Yet by leethebee: 9:37pm On Oct 31, 2022
Rangers are bottom of Group A heading into their final Champions League group game; The Gers were beaten 4-0 by Ajax in September; "We cannot compare ourselves to Ajax but we can compete with them on the day," said Giovanni van Bronckhorst

The Gers are bottom of the table with five straight defeats and a goal difference of -18, having lost 4-0 to the Dutch outfit in Amsterdam in their group opener, and they need an unlikely 5-0 win to make it into the Europa League.

After beating last season's Europa League finalists with some ease, Ajax lost home and away to Napoli and Liverpool who have already qualified for the knockout stages.

However, Van Bronckhorst pointed out the discrepancy between the clubs who will play their final group game at Ibrox.

"Compete with Ajax? A team that has almost played the final and for five or six years in a row have been doing well in Europe," said the Dutchman on the eve of the game, as he confirmed that midfielder Glen Kamara is back in the Rangers squad but defenders Ben Davies and Ridvan Yilmaz are out, while midfielder John Lundstram is suspended.

"We have been doing well in Europe the last three years, but we are still not at the same level as Ajax.

"We are developing and that's the way it is. It is the way the differences are in Europe at the moment.

"If you see Ajax, the players overall are from a higher level, their budget is higher.

"They bought players for £100m. They bought a not bad defender (Calvin Bassey) from us last season.

"We cannot compare ourselves to Ajax but we can compete with them on the day, especially at home at Ibrox."

Van Bronckhorst believes even a point to finish of their first Champions League campaign in 12 years would be "positive" for the club.

He said: "The group is really hard. You can see Ajax only have three points.

"Last year they had a 100 per cent record in the Champions League (group stage). Tomorrow we can match their points if we win.

"So that shows you the level Napoli and Liverpool have shown in this group.

"It's still going to be a really hard game because Ajax is a very good team."

The absence of Davies, Yilmaz and Lundstram is another blow to Van Bronckhorst who has a clutch of players on the sidelines through injury.

Centre-back Davies came off at half-time of the 4-1 cinch Premiership win over Aberdeen at Ibrox on Saturday with a groin problem while left-back Yilmaz was replaced after eight minutes due to a hamstring complaint.

Kamara is back after missing the last six games through injury and will be a much-needed addition to the squad.

Van Bronckhorst said: "We have Kamara coming back in the squad. Lundstram is not available because of suspension.

"Yilmaz will not be ready. He will be out for several weeks.

"He has a hamstring injury. It will definitely be after the World Cup. I don't know how long exactly but he will not be involved in the remaining games until the break.

"Ben Davies didn't train. Hopefully he will be involved at the weekend but tomorrow will be too early."

Politics / Nigerians Must Elect Their Choice — Buhari, INEC Boss by leethebee: 8:33pm On Oct 31, 2022
President Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday, vowed to support Nigerians to elect their choice in the 2023 general elections.

The President made this declaration while speaking at the Police Conference three-day retreat with the theme ‘Imperative of the Nigeria Police Strategy for a Peaceful Election’ in Owerri.

He said he was interested in an election Nigerians would accept and be happy with the outcome.

At the same event, the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, insisted that the commission would abide strictly by the transmission of election results from the polling units to the INEC headquarters.

“It provides an opportunity to discuss the best way to achieve the 2023 election. I want to reaffirm that as the President, one of the legacies I will leave is the conduct of a credible and acceptable election and that Nigerians must be allowed to elect the President of their choice.

“That is the reason I signed the amended Electoral Bill.

“For us, the time is now for reform. That is why we are giving support to the Police that is why I signed the Police Trust Fund, and police academy to give the police a legal framework to work effectively’

“As well as the approval of a new welfare for police officers and approval and release of funds for recruitment of police officers as part of the way to address the issue of unemployment in the country.

“We want the police to remain apolitical. This is how our election can be credible. I charge the police to deliver the nation during the 2023 general election.

“Police should sustain their standards so that the outcome of the 2023 election will be the reflection of the people’s choices,” Buhari said.

Politics / Tinubu: Buhari, North Proved Nigeria Can Survive Its Unity. by leethebee: 8:20pm On Oct 30, 2022
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, says President Muhammadu Buhari, APC Northern Governors and leaders have proved that Nigeria can survive its unity and other challenges.

According to a statement by Mr Tunde Rahman, Tinubu’s Media Officer, on Sunday in Abuja, the APC 2023 presidential candidate said this in Akure, Ondo State, at the residence of Afenifere Leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

The statement said Tinubu spoke during an interaction with Afenifere leaders while presenting his policy document and Action Plan for a better Nigeria.

It recalled Tinubu’s earlier visit to Pa Fasoranti on March 4, during his nationwide consultation before the APC presidential primaries when he promised the Afenifere leader that he would come back after winning the party’s ticket.

It said the visit was in fulfilment of Tinubu’s promise and to ask Yoruba leaders to thank President Buhari and APC Northern Governors for their steadfastness and for being promise-keepers.

“The North proved to me Nigeria can survive its unity, some people wanted President Buhari to announce someone, but the president said no. He insisted the process must go on democratically.

“The president said anyone that would mess up the APC process would see the other side of his eyes, he remained upright and saw to the process to the end.

“Northern APC Governors resolved that the presidency must go to the South, and especially South-West, Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State, Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State and others supported me to the end.

“The battle was tough and at a point I was in doubt, there were many rumours and I became confused of what to believe,” the statement quoted Tinubu as saying.

Tinubu said he won the APC presidential primary election because the process was clean and transparent, adding that nobody could accuse Buhari of manipulating the process.

“President Buhari said I gave him credibility and I deserved to be President.

When I asked him to nominate the Vice-Presidential candidate for me, he said I should pick whoever I want,” Tinubu said.

He added that this was why he chose a competent man in Sen. Kashim Shettima, who according to him, never lost any election and protected Christians in times of trouble in Borno State as its governor.

The statement added that while welcoming Tinubu and his entourage, General Secretary of Afenifere, Chief Seinde Arogbofa, charged Tinubu to be a leader that would unite Nigeria and work for the progress and development of the country.

Arogbofa said Tinubu was not just a Yoruba man, but a Nigerian, adding that when he became president, he should take Nigeria into consideration and never to forget home.

“Our demands are what you know already. restructuring, security and fixing the economy; our country is no longer safe, we want state police so that the country will be safe,” the statement quoted Arogbofa as saying.

According to the statement, the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Mr Lucky Aiyedatiwa, received Tinubu and his entourage on behalf of Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu at the meeting.

Aiyedatiwa said Ondo people were Afenifere and would support Tinubu to win the election because he had the reach and competence to lead Nigeria.

The statement said the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji at the meeting, assured the Yoruba leaders that all South-West governors and Ekiti people were solidly behind Tinubu.

It added that former Secretary of the Government of the Federation, (SGF) Chief Olu Falae, and Afenifere leader charged Tinubu to work to fix the country’s economy.

“When you become president please work to fix this country, we are here to offer advice. I am old and no longer looking for a job.

“We need to fix security, fix our economy, our naira is almost becoming useless and will soon become N1,000 to a dollar.

“We must change that. I know your ability, we will always be here to support and I wish you well. We will be here when you bring the trophy home by the grace of God,” the statement quoted Falae as saying.

It said leaders of Afenifere from the six South-West states, including Kwara and Kogi were present at the Akure residence of the Afenifere leader to offer support to Tinubu.

It listed Afenifere leaders at the meeting to include: Chief Pius Akinyelure, Prof. Isaac Adewole, Chief Olu Falae, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Alani Akinrinade, Olu Bajowa, Mr Sola Iji and Dr Kunle Olajide.

Others it said were the General Secretary of the Yoruba Council of Elders, Sen. Cornelius Adebayo, Sen. Iyiola Omisore, Chief Bisi Akande, Dare Babarinsa and Chief Pius Akinyelure.

The statement said Oyo State Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal represented Gov. Seyi Makinde, the state governor at the meeting.

Also at the meeting were Chief Segun Adesegun who represented former Governor Segun Osoba, Sen. Tony Adefuye, Sen. Dayo Adeyeye, state leaders of Afenifere and many others, the statement said.

Afenifere was formed as a socio-cultural and political organisation for the Yoruba people of Nigeria, with Chief Abraham Adesanya as its leader and the late Chief Bola Ige as deputy leader at the time.
Politics / 2023: Find Something Better To Do With Old Age, Tinubu Campaign Tells Akintoye by leethebee: 12:58pm On Oct 28, 2022
The Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council has asked the leader of Yoruba Nation Self-Determination Struggle, Prof Banji Akintoye to find something better to do with his old age.

Director, Media & Publicity of the Campaign Council,
Bayo Onanuga made this assertion in a press statement made available to newsmen on Thursday.

Onanuga’s assertion comes following Akintoye’s remark on Tinubu’s 2023 presidential ambition.

Recall Akintoye, had on Thursday, claimed that Tinubu’s ambition was for “personal interest, and not for the welfare of the Yoruba people.”

Akintoye also stated that he is not endorsing Tinubu and would not vote for Tinubu in 2023.

But, Onanuga has described Akintoye’s statement as unfortunate and divisive, noting that his group is threatening to pull the South West from Nigeria.

His words, “Since there has been no referendum held in Yorubaland about whether to stay in Nigeria or not, we presume that the separatist idea is basically Akintoye’s idea.

“We want to advise him not to plunge our people into crisis or another Rwanda.

“We find it unwarranted the professor’s sweeping accusation that Asíwájú Bola Ahmed Tinubu is only pursuing his personal interest in running for the presidency of Nigeria. We hasten to say Asiwaju Tinubu is doing so because of his readiness to render unflinching service to Nigerians and his abiding faith in a strong, united and prosperous Nigeria where all men and women regardless of their ethnicity and religious beliefs can find joy and personal fulfillment.

“Most of the issues on the structure of our federalism raised in Professor Akintoye’s statement have been sufficiently addressed in Asiwaju’s Action Plan with his promise to address some of the problems plaguing our federalism and the will to make the states to be more viable as federating units by devolving more powers to them.

Can Bola Tinubu win the 2023 Presidential Election? BET NOW on www.naijabet.com

“We quote: “Since our nation’s inception, too much power and resources have been lodged at the federal level. This has come at the expense of state and local governance. This is problematic because state governments are closer to the people and must be more responsive to local needs and aspirations.

“A Tinubu administration will rebalance the responsibilities and authorities of the different tiers of government. We will collaborate with the National Assembly and State Governments to amend our national governance architecture such that States are afforded the autonomy and resources needed to better serve.”

“We find it unexplainable that Professor Akintoye who once served as a Senator of the Federal Republic under the Unity Party of Nigeria from 1979-83 at 87years old, in the twilight of his years on earth, wants to leave a legacy of hatred, bitterness, intolerance and acrimony in our country when he should be a voice of reason, wisdom and stability.

“Yoruba people which Akintoye falsely claimed he is fighting for say “we don’t have an elder in a market and the head of a newborn is not properly placed.” This immortal words of our forebears appear to be lost on Professor Akintoye who seems to be using his old age to create discord and enmity within our body polity. Rather than being a fountain of wisdom for the young people, Professor Akintoye has become a totem of anarchy and confusion.

“Professor Akintoye said Asiwaju Tinubu is using his old video to campaign. This is a lie. Asiwaju Tinubu and his campaign organisation have never used any video made by the old man to promote his presidential aspiration. It is now apparent that Professor Akintoye is not among the distinguished and venerable elders our people say don’t lie.

“There was nowhere Yoruba people sat in a meeting with a mandate given to Professor Akintoye and his band of confusionists in his so-called Ilana Yoruba Group to lead Yoruba out of Nigeria.

“Asiwaju is contesting to be President of Nigeria because he is a nationalist, a bridge builder and a man with a clear vision to make Nigeria work for all Nigerians. Tinubu is not a hopeless tribalist and delusional ethnic iredentist. Tinubu believes in Nigeria and its manifest greatness and he is prepared to provide the leadership required to make our country one of the greatest nations on earth,” the statement reads partly.

Onanuga advised Akintoye to use the remaining part of his life to be at peace with himself and his maker instead of fanning embers of discord.

Politics / My Administration Will Be Accountable To Osun People – Adeleke by leethebee: 10:44pm On Oct 27, 2022
Osun Governor-elect, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, says his administration will be accountable to the people of the state, vowing that he will not betray the trust reposed in him.

Adeleke made this known while receiving the report of the Transition Committee on Thursday in Ede town.

Adeleke, who lauded members of the committee for their commitment, said that he would study the report critically and ensure its full implementation once he assumes office.

He said, ”You have worked tirelessly in the last few months. You have laboured hard to produce a detailed governance blueprint for our dear state.

“I am at a glance impressed that your committee built on my five-point agenda.

“From workers’ welfare to infrastructure, education, health, agriculture, women, youth, security, information technology, the environment, and state economy, we are set to deliver on our electoral promises.”

He assured the committee members that their labour would not be in vain, adding that they stood to be counted at a very critical moment in the life of the state.

“Even when the outgoing government refused to cooperate, you forged ahead. You delivered on your mandate as contained in your terms of reference.

“You accomplished the task with elegance to the admiration of all.

“Responsible and responsive leadership is here. Transparency and accountability are knocking at the door. I will be a true people’s governor all the time,” he pledged.

Adeleke, who said members of his team are already compiling a long list of infractions committed by the outgoing government, warned that he would not condone such infractions under his administration.

“From padding state payroll to multiple engagements outside the due process, the collective assets and treasury of Osun are being distorted, diverted, and mortgaged for selfish political and private interests.

“The oath of office for all leaders is to serve within the confine of the law and public interest,” he said.

According to the Governor-elect, no leader takes oath to plunder the state, saying, ”I make a vow to the people of Osun state that none of the ongoing illegalities will stand under my leadership.

“Through appropriate channels and platforms, normalcy will be enforced within the ministries, agencies, and parastatals.”

Earlier, the Chairman of the Committee, Dr Muyiwa Oladimeji, said that the report, which was an interim one, would assist the Governor-elect to start governance on a smooth note.

Oladimeji, who said that the committee did not get any official cooperation from the outgoing state government, said such behaviour was myopic and uncivilized.

“If we believe that the state belongs to all of us, there is no need for such behaviour.

“But we still thank some government officials who unofficially provided some information for us to work with,” he said.

Politics / I ‘ll Make Abia First Class State In A Third World Country – Emenike by leethebee: 2:05pm On Oct 22, 2022
Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Abia state, High Chief Ikechi Emenike, has pledged to make Abia a first class state in a third world country if he is elected Governor in the 2023 election.

The governorship candidate explained that his plan is achievable given the potentials of the state that have not been fully tapped. He, however, acknowledged that the battle to rescue Abia would be tough given that those holding the state down for over two decades would not easily let go.

Alleging that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has underdeveloped Abia in the 24 years it has held power in the state, the APC governorship flag bearer assured that his ‘operation rescue and develop’ mission is capable of changing the narrative of the state from 2023.

Emenike, who stated this in an interview with journalists in Umuahia on the heels of his appointment as the Abia State Coordinator of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, added that the journey to the 2023 poll is not for the fainthearted.

His words; “I wholeheartedly accepted the assignment given to me by the APC presidential candidate, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the national leadership of the ruling party. APC is firmly rooted in Abia and would win the majority votes to usher in the expected change in Abia state and revive the people’s confidence in governance through a holistic development of the state. I have the capacity to make Abia a first class state in a third world country. I’m already used to serving the APC at top level, having been the Secretary of the Contact and Strategy Committee in the APC Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC). I have also served in the presidential campaign team of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 and 2019.”

Emenike assured that he would not waver in his determination to liberate Abia from bad leaders and give a resounding victory to APC in the 2023 general election.

He charged the APC faithful to brace up for the challenges ahead and strive to save Abia, stressing that posterity will remember their contributions to efforts to free the state and set it on the path of development.

“I will do my own part and if every one of us show enough commitment and effectively play their own part. I can assure you that victory will be for us. The prospect of bringing real development to God’s own state would only be possible if APC succeeded in taking control of Abia Government House come 2023.

“Abia has degenerated to the extent that well meaning Abians must take a stand and join the movement to rescue the state. I assure Abia people that I’m fully prepared to turn things around to positively change the current ugly narrative of the state.”
