The police in Abuja yesterday paraded eight suspected robbers and kidnappers, said to be allegedly responsible for the death of a former Commissioner in Katsina State, Prof. Halimatu Idris. They said 35 bandits had been arrested in Zamfara State, adding that six AK47 rifles, 15 locally-made guns, 183 AK47 live ammunition and seven cartridges were recovered from them. The suspected highway kidnappers were alleged to have been responsible for the attack on the Director, National Agricultural Research Extensions and Liaison Services, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Prof. Mohammed Othman, and abduction of a mum and her seven-month baby. The police said six of their victims were rescued and the suspects were caught after a gun battle with special forces. The suspects, Lawal Tukur, 40; Sulaiman Sani, 27; Abubakar Ahmad, 30; Abubakar Adamu, 33; Yahaya Musa, 33; Kabiru Bala, 23; Rufai Tukur, 26 and Shehu Audi, 32, had unleashed terror on road users on Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Highway before their arrest by operatives of Operation Absolute Sanity. Sani and Adamu confessed to have killed four persons, the police said, adding that Bala kidnapped Rahinatu Shehu, 51, a mother, Aisha Sani, 23, with her seven-month-old baby at their Mararaba Guga town, Giwa Local Government home. Police spokesman Jimoh Moshood said two AK47 rifles, three pairs of fake military uniforms, cutlasses, motorcycle as well as Shedda cloth and other items belonging to their victims were recovered from the suspects. He said their arrest followed an order by Inspector-General of Police Ibrahim Idris (IG) that those responsible for the July 22 murder of the former commissioner and other heinous crimes in the axis should be arrested. “Investigation is in progress and effort is being intensified to nab other suspects. They will be arraigned after investigation,” said Moshood. He said operatives and equipment had been deployed in the axis to ensure safety, adding that the IG has directed the return to Kaduna State, the Police Mobile Force (PMF) squadrons in MOPOL 1, 47 and 61, who were on special duties outside. The spokesman said: “PMF units of the Squadrons in MOPOL 1 Kaduna, MOPOL 47 Zaria and MOPOL 61 Kafanchan on special duties outside the state have been ordered by the IG to return to Kaduna State to tighten security, particularly on Kaduna-Abuja highway, Kaduna-Zaria-Kano, Kaduna-BirninGwari-Zamfara-Funtua-Zamfara highway and other flash points.” On the situation in Zamfara, he said peace had been restored, adding that more policemen were deployed following the attack on Kodi village in Zurmi Local Government on July 24, during which four people were killed. Moshood said: “The Force is embarking on police crime prevention, visibility and confidence building patrols. The people in the affected villages have started returning to their homes. “Thirty-five bandits have been arrested in connection with the recent attacks in villages in Zamfara State. Six AK47 rifles, 15 locally-fabricated guns, 183 AK47 ammunition and seven live cartridges were recovered from the bandits. “The suspects have made useful statements to the police and confessed to the killings.” https://legitinfobase..com/2018/08/i-have-killed-4-others-alleged-killer.html

Health / How To Meet Your Body’s Water Needs by Legitinfoxx: 11:48pm On Aug 01, 2018 |
Many people fail to consume enough liquid. Your body’s water balance is determined by how much you consume, your age and activity level and environmental conditions. IN SUMMARY You can help to counter dehydration and enhance the healthfulness of your diet by consuming nutritious foods that are laden with a hidden water source. Plant foods like fruits, vegetables and seeds are a source of so-called gel water — pure, safe, hydrating water that is slowly absorbed into the body when the foods are consumed. Inadequate hydration can cause fatigue, poor appetite, heat intolerance, dizziness, constipation, kidney stones and a dangerous drop in blood pressure. I wonder how we all survived — and even thrived — in our younger years without the plethora of water bottles that nearly everyone seems to carry around these days. In reading about the risks and consequences of dehydration, especially for the elderly and anyone who exercises vigorously in hot weather, it’s nothing short of a miracle that more of us hadn’t succumbed years ago to the damaging physical, cognitive and health effects of inadequate hydration. Even with the current ubiquity of portable water containers, far too many people still fail to consume enough liquid to compensate for losses suffered especially, though not exclusively, during the dehydrating warm months. For those of you who know or suspect that you don’t drink enough to compensate for daily water losses, the good news is you don’t have to rely entirely on your liquid intake to remain well-hydrated. Studies in societies with limited supplies of drinking water suggest you can help to counter dehydration and, at the same time, enhance the healthfulness of your diet by consuming nutritious foods that are laden with a hidden water source. Plant foods like fruits, vegetables and seeds are a source of so-called gel water — pure, safe, hydrating water that is slowly absorbed into the body when the foods are consumed. That’s the message in a newly published book, Quench , by Dr. Dana Cohen, an integrative medicine specialist in New York, and Gina Bria, an anthropologist whose studies of the water challenges faced by desert dwellers led to the establishment of the Hydration Foundation, a non-profit group that promotes understanding and consumption of nonliquid sources of water. HYDRATION More about these foods later. First, I must convince more of you that remaining well-hydrated is crucial to your health. However solid your body, the majority of it is water, ranging from 75 per cent of the body weight of infants to 55 per cent of the elderly. Every bodily process, every living cell, depends on water to function properly. Water transports nutrients, regulates body temperature, lubricates joints and internal organs, supports the structure of cells and tissues and preserves cardiovascular function. People can survive for only three or four days — a week at most — without water. But more to the point is the quality of survival. Inadequate hydration can cause fatigue, poor appetite, heat intolerance, dizziness, constipation, kidney stones and a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Brain effects include mood shifts, muddled thinking, inattentiveness and poor memory. A loss of only 1-2 per cent of body water can impair cognitive performance, according to studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Your body’s water balance is determined by how much you consume, your age and activity level and environmental conditions. The body loses water through the skin, lungs, kidneys and digestive tract; in other words, by sweating, breathing and elimination of waste, both liquid and solid. “Water needs can vary from person to person — and no one person will need the same amount of fluid from one day to the next,” the Virginia scientists wrote in the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health and Fitness Journal. The typical American consumes about one litre — a little over four cups — of drinking water a day. But people like me who engage in quasi-vigorous physical activity daily need more, and those who exercise strenuously for more than an hour a day need even more than that, perhaps supplemented by a sports drink containing the electrolytes sodium and potassium (but avoid those with more than a pinch of sugar). Keep in mind that skimping on your liquid intake or relying on sugary drinks can take a toll on your physical performance. If you’re planning to engage in strenuous exercise or do physical work outdoors on a hot day, it’s best to start hydrating the day before. Check the colour of your urine; the paler it is, the better. Also continue to drink water or other fluids throughout your activity and for hours afterward. A critical factor in remaining well-hydrated is not to rely on thirst to remind you to drink but rather to be proactive by consuming enough liquid before, during and after meals and physical activity. The long-standing advice to drink eight glasses of water a day was something I (among many others) was never able to achieve. I’m happy to say that experts have since modified that rule. Current thinking calls for getting about 70 per cent of daily water needs from liquids (including coffee and tea, by the way, though not alcohol) and the rest from solid foods. PLANT WATER The authors of Quench suggest two dozen fruits and vegetables that are especially hydrating, ranging from cucumbers with 96.7 per cent water to grapes with 81.5 per cent. Surely you can find many you would enjoy in a list that includes lettuce, tomatoes, cauliflower, spinach, broccoli, carrots, peppers, watermelon, strawberries, pineapple, blueberries, apples and pears. Even chia seeds, an ancient so-called superfood said to sustain the ultra-running prowess of the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico, can be a force against dehydration; they absorb 30 times their weight in water and can provide the body with slow-release hydration, especially during long bouts of physical activity in high heat and humidity. Naturally packaged plant water hydrates more efficiently than plain drinking water, the Quench authors maintain, because it’s already purified, is packed with soluble nutrients and gradually supplies the body with water. That said, while there is considerable anecdotal evidence for the effectiveness of plant water, especially among enthusiasts of green smoothies, well-designed clinical studies are still lacking. Yet I feel comfortable in recommending an increased reliance on these hydrating foods because, at the very least, they can result in a more nutritious diet and foster better weight control. Getting more of your water from plant foods can also help to cut down on pollution. The earth is being overrun with disposable plastic water bottles that can be found littering streets and parks and floating in rivers, oceans and lakes everywhere. Unless you are visiting a region of the world where it is unsafe to drink the water, try to avoid buying water. If you are in doubt about the safety of your municipal water supply, if you rely on well water that has not been tested, or if you dislike the taste or your local water, consider installing a faucet filter or using a portable filter container like Brita. Now, join me as I take a big drink to your health. https://legitinfobase..com/2018/08/how-to-meet-your-bodys-water-needs.html |
Politics / PVC: Why August 17 Deadline Will Not Be Extended – INEC by Legitinfoxx: 3:31pm On Aug 01, 2018 |
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the Aug. 17 deadline for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will not be extended. The commission said the exercise would resume after the 2019 General Elections scheduled for Feb. 26 and March 2. Mr Mohorret Bigun, Public Affairs Officer of INEC in Gombe told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday that the exercise would henceforth include weekends and public holidays to allow for more people to register beginning from Aug.1. He said INEC was not planning to extend the exercise beyond Aug. 17 as being anticipated in some quarters. “There will be no extension of ongoing registration beyond the Aug. 17 deadline. Those who are anticipating extension should go and register. “From Aug. 1, we are going to operate from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Sunday. This is to give room for those who are yet to turn up for the exercise. “We have been directed to suspend the registration of voters until the 2019 general elections are concluded,’’ Bigun said. He said the commission decided to suspend the exercise till next year to enable it to produce the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for distribution. “The commission would not want to deny anyone the right to vote; hence the need to suspend the exercise temporarily to prepare for the general elections in 2019.’’ According to him, 141,345 persons, comprising 55,407 (39 per cent) females and 85,947 (61 per cent) males have so far registered as at July 30. He appealed to those who were yet to register to take advantage of the adjustment in the timetable https://legitinfobase..com/2018/08/pvc-why-august-17-deadline-will-not-be.html

Crime / Britain Drops Terror Charges Against Ex-soldier For Fighting IS by Legitinfoxx: 2:55pm On Jul 31, 2018 |
Britain Drops Terror Charges Against Ex-Soldier For Fighting IS James Matthews A former British soldier alleged to have fought alongside Kurdish forces battling the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria had terrorism charges against him dropped on Tuesday. James Matthews, from east London, was due to face trial in November after being charged with receiving training in Iraq and Syria on or before February 15 2016 “for purposes connected to the commission of preparation of terrorism”. The 43-year-old was believed to be the first person to be prosecuted for terrorism in Britain for assisting a group already helped by the British government. But state prosecutor Tom Little said at a hearing at London’s Old Bailey on Tuesday that there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction on “evidential grounds”. Hundreds of foreign fighters from countries including Britain, Canada, France, Germany and the United States have fought alongside the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in northern Syria. The group is a key component of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces alliance which waged a successful campaign against Islamic State jihadists. Joel Bennathan, who was defending Matthews, said his client was “happy” charges had been dropped. “We have always said the decision to prosecute Mr Matthews for fighting with the YPG against Isis was extraordinary and totally unjustified,” he said. “Mr Matthews is happy this has now come to an end. “Mr Matthews was always open about what he had done and it is baffling that the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) took two years to decide to prosecute him, then seven months later they have suddenly realised there is not enough evidence to do so.” The ex-soldier said he joined the YPG after seeing a photograph of an IS fighter holding the decapitated head of a woman. “It seemed like one of the most single evil things I’ve ever seen and it affected me quite a lot,” said Matthews, who appeared on a Channel 4 documentary called “The Brits battling ISIS”. https://legitinfobase..com/2018/07/britain-drops-terror-charges-against-ex.html
