Most Nigerians have turned social media to where they go for commercial begging and such was the case of this user who was caught asking for two thousand Naira from Popular On Air Personality, Daddy Freeze.

The controversial OAP, however, replied him by asking him to join the ongoing resurrection challenge he is overseeing with the same data he is using to beg for money on social media.

Politics / 2019: 4 Major Reasons Atiku Won PDP Primary by LekkiGists: 4:39am On Oct 08, 2018

There are four major reasons Atiku Abubakar emerged winner at the presidential primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Port Harcourt

The peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has made its choice of a presidential candidate for the 2019 general election and Nigerians are now sure of who their option is.

It was an election the party now wants the electoral body in Nigeria to learn from.

Atiku Abubakar is their choice and other aspirants have expressed support for him, praising the credibility of the election and the electoral body led by the Governor of Delta State, Ifenayi Okowa.

It has come and gone, but there are a few things that came out of that victory for Abubakar and here are some reasons he won.

1. His Experience In The Game

It is not the first time that the man from Adamawa State is engaging in the contest for the Presidential ticket of a political party.

He was the same man that Muhammadu Buhari defeated in 2014 to clinch the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and he must have licked his wounds and learnt some lessons.

His ambition to become the president of Nigeria began in 1992 when he contested for the ticket of the Social Democratic Party with Moshood Abiola.

He came third in that race and when a run-off was due, he stepped down for Abiola.

In 1998, he contested for the governorship of Adamawa State under the Peoples Democratic Party and won the election, but before he was sworn in, the man elected as the Presidential candidate of the party, Dr. Olusegun Obasanjo, picked him as his Vice for the race which they won.

He tried again in 2006 to become the president of Nigeria, announcing his intention on 25 November and subsequently getting the green light from the Action Congress.

Why Atiku won
But that desire was scuttled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) body which removed his name from the list, citing allegations of corruption against him.

Atiku went to court and got victory at the Supreme Court. The court ruled that INEC had no power to disqualify candidates.

He later contested in that presidential election and lost to Umaru Yar'Adua of the PDP.

2. Northern Support
There is a general consensus that anyone who will defeat a northern president will have to come from the north to be able to divide the vote of the sitting president.

Atiku has emerged with the support of persons from the north who also gave him a reasonable amount of vote.

You know that the northern part of Nigeria, because of the number of states in the region, wields the power of majority when it comes to politics.

Atiku Abubakar is also from the north
He is not only from the north, he is also a Fulani like President Buhari and that will further make the race a tough one, analysts have said.

3. The Money Game
In Nigeria's politics, money still plays a role as was seen in Ekiti and then Osun.

When the Senate President also visited Lagos State to express his interest in the presidential ticket of the PDP, party members fought over money.

Money must be shared and the poverty in the land has made the situation more despicable.

Although there is no allegation of Mr Abubakar lobbying with huge sum of money, he has the resources to, should there be need for it.

Atiku Abubakar opens Chicken Cottage In Abuja
He has series of businesses in Nigeria and had even at some point claimed he had provided more jobs to Nigerians than any other individual in the nation.

4. Loved By The South East
After the election reports were released with insider account saying votes from South-East delegates mostly went to Atiku.

Punch reported that almost all delegates from Ebonyi State voted for the former vice-president while he shared votes of Enugu State delegates with Tambuwal.

In 2015, months after president Buhari won the presidential election, he was at the US Institute Of Peace and he made a comment that may have whipped up sentiments in the South East.

Responding to a question on inclusive governance from Dr. Pauline Baker, President Buhari said: "The constituents, for example, gave me 97% [of the vote] cannot in all honesty be treated on some issues with constituencies that gave me 5%.

“I think these are political reality".

That statement was seen as a reflection of the decision of the President to treat the South East differently and that apparently stayed in their hearts.

Celebrities / 'why I Performed Semi-Unclad In London' - Brymo Explains by LekkiGists: 4:31am On Oct 08, 2018

Nigerian Singer, Olawale Ashimi, aka Brymo performed at an event recently in London rocking nothing but a piece of clothe wrapped around his loins while his butt was left bare.

In a chat with Sunday Scoop, Brymo explained the reason for his choice of clothing saying,

'
that was the way our forefathers used to dress before the arrival of the West. As a matter of fact, some months ago, a picture circulated on the Internet of a wealthy Igbo farmer who dressed that way in 1930. I just wanted to remind people of our past . It surprises me that people are shocked whenever I dress that way. That was the same way I dressed in the video for my song'.
He went on to add that,

'In this part of the world, we are mostly consumers ; not creators. If the advanced world should come here and take all of their technologies, we would be left naked. However, I appreciate the people who follow my music and see it as a form of artistic expression. Those are the people I do this for. For those who don’t like it; sorry, I don’t know what to do about that'.

Politics / Buhari To Teachers: Be Change Agents For National Development by LekkiGists: 1:53am On Oct 06, 2018

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on teachers in the country to be positive change agents in the growth, development and well-being aspirations of students.

According to a News Agency of Nigeria report, Buhari made the call on Friday at the 2018 World Teachers’ Day in Abuja with the theme, “The right to education means the right to qualified teachers.”

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, Buhari said Nigerian children were pillars of strength as well as drivers of economic growth, hence the need for teachers to be positive influencers to the students.

The President said despite that the teaching profession was faced with various challenges such as low wages, low self-esteem and lack of professionalism, the government was committed to the course of the teaching profession.

According to him, efforts are being made to improve teachers in the area of skills acquisition and continued professional development.

“Having ascertained that education is a right, teachers have an important role to play to adequately prepare the young people for their roles in the society in order to achieve the set national objectives,” Buhari stated.

The President noted that to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals 4 by 2030, the Federal Ministry of Education had developed a Ministerial Strategic Plan Education for Change (2016 to 2019).

He added the plan was a road map to guide the government’s efforts towards effective implementation and the achievement of the SDG4 and other related education targets of the SDG agenda.

He therefore called for the professionalisation of teachers, while urging them to obtain their professional licence from the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria before the December 2019 deadline.

Earlier at the event, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, noted that research findings had consistently shown that the most important factor that influenced students` learning was the presence of qualified teachers.

The minister called on all teachers to work with the government at all levels to move education forward in the country.

Crime / 10 Injured, 20 Vehicles Damaged As Benue PDP Primary Turns Bloody by LekkiGists: 1:38am On Oct 06, 2018
At least 10 persons sustained severe injuries while over 20 vehicles were badly damaged on Thursday night during the Benue South senatorial primary of the Peoples Democratic Party held at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi, the state capital.

Our correspondent, who monitored the situation, observed that thugs barricaded the entrance to the stadium, where the primary was held.

The senatorial primary had earlier been scheduled to hold in Otukpo, but couldn’t hold after allegations of falsification of the delegates’ list – a development that prompted the electoral committee members to shift the venue of the exercise.

However, trouble started on Thursday night when the accreditation of delegates was ongoing and some persons protested against the list of delegates from the Ohimini Local Government Area.

At this point, some suspected thugs who were supporters of some aspirants started hauling stones at the delegates, a development that forced the security operatives to shoot into the air to disperse the crowd.

But some of the hoodlums, who were also armed, responded with gunshots, leading to violence.

The hoodlums then destroyed some of the facilities at the stadium, injured over 10 persons and destroyed more than 20 cars, while delegates, as well as journalists, scampered for safety.

As of the time our correspondent left the stadium, a team of policemen in four Toyota Hilux pick-up vans drove to the venue to stop the violence.

Speaking to journalists at the stadium, the state Deputy Governor, Mr Benson Abounu, expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the primary was conducted.

He wondered why the accreditation of delegates should become an issue among aspirants, resulting to delay of the exercise.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Moses Yamu, said he was not aware of the incident when contacted via phone on Friday.

Politics / I Declared For President To Revive Dying Economy –tambuwal by LekkiGists: 2:21am On Oct 04, 2018

Sokoto State Governor and presidential aspirant on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party, Aminu Tambuwal, said that the patriotic desire to revive the country’s “dying economy” forced him to declare to run for the office of the President.

Tambuwal, who spoke in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Wednesday when he interfaced with PDP delegates ahead of the party’s presidential primary in Port Harcourt, noted that the country needed an urgent rescue.

The former House of Representatives Speaker accused President Muhammadu Buhari and his former party, the All Progressives Congress, of not doing enough to liberate the country from the shackles of poverty, unemployment, and insecurity.

Tambuwal said Nigeria was suffering from untold hardship caused by the present APC administration even as he said that the economy was seriously nose-diving under the watch of Buhari without quality measures to revive it.

He said, “Nigeria needs a government that understands how the three arms of government work, a government that can compete favourably with other nations in this 21st century.”

“When you give me the mandate as the President of this great nation, I shall help to restructure the country where Nigerians will agree on how best to govern the country. We need leadership that can catch up with other great countries of the world.”

“I can assure you that Imo state will be carried along in my government and I tell you that you’ll not regret giving me your support.”

“My government will help states to integrate with policies of the Federal Government just like I did as the Governor of Sokoto state.”

Meanwhile, the Sokoto State Non-indigenes Association has endorsed the aspiration of the Tambuwal for the PDP presidential ticket.

This was contained in a press statement issued to journalists at the end of their meeting by the President-General of the Yoruba community in Sokoto, Chief James Olorunfemi.

The group described Tambuwal’s achievement both as the Speaker, House of Representatives and Governor of Sokoto State as unparalleled when compared with his predecessors in the aforementioned offices.

Politics / I’ll Resign If S’court Finds INEC Culpable In Osun Gov Poll –REC by LekkiGists: 1:48am On Oct 04, 2018

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, Mr Olusegun Agbaje, has vowed to resign his appointment if the Supreme Court finds the Independent National Electoral Commission guilty in the conduct of the recently concluded governorship election in the state.

Agbaje said this in his speech in Osogbo on Wednesday during the presentation of the certificate of return to the Osun State Governor-elect, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, of the All Progressives Congress.

Oyetola and the Deputy Governor-elect, Mr Benedict Alabi, were given the certificate of return by the National Electoral Commissioner representing Oyo, Osun and Ekiti states, Mr Solomon Soyebi, at INEC office in Osogbo.

The REC said those who were dissatisfied with the outcome of the election had the right to seek redress at election petition tribunal where their case would be examined by the panel.

Agbaje said he and the officials of the INEC were very neutral and that they did not do anything to give any of the contestants an undue advantage over others.

He said, “I would nevertheless want to reassure the good people of Osun State, particularly our royal fathers and religious leaders, that I remained extremely neutral throughout the period of the election. I can positively stress that my members of staff also did.

“However, if at the end of the litigation at the Supreme Court of Nigeria, the commission is found culpable for not discharging its responsibility faithfully and diligently, I will take full responsibility for any such laxity, publicly apologise to all Nigerians and thereafter resign my appointment with the commission.

“I honestly believe that I worked very hard with my lieutenants to ensure that we justify the confidence of the people and the mobilised human and material resources provided for us by the commission to prosecute the election.”

Oyetola, who was declared the winner of the election, contested on the platform of the APC and defeated the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ademola Adeleke.

Receiving the certificate, Oyetola commended INEC and security agencies for doing a great job during the poll.

The governor-elect promised to make the welfare of the people the focus of his administration while restating that he would run an all-inclusive government.

Oyetola said, “I have to thank God and I commend INEC for doing a wonderful job at the main election and the rerun. You did a wonderful job. You minimised casualties and you were neutral in the way you managed things during that election.

“We should all say the truth and say the truth at all times. I will also commend security agencies for doing a wonderful job.

“One of our agents was killed in Esa Odo. Given the magnitude of the election, we were bound to have hitches here and there. There were fake observers and fake observers, should be something that should worry everybody. We should be fair while commenting on the role of INEC and security agencies in the election.

“The victory is for the people of the state, for believing in our party and in me. I will justify the confidence reposed in me. Mine is to serve and I will serve to the best of my ability. Genuine stakeholders will come on board so that we can run the state together. I will always consult with the majority of the stakeholders in making decisions.

“We will ensure that our programmes are people friendly. The main focus of our administration will be the welfare of the people. I must not fail to recognise the Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, for giving me the opportunity to serve.”

Phones / Firefox Focus Gets A Redesign And A New Engine To Power Android Version by LekkiGists: 1:41am On Oct 04, 2018

Mozilla’s Firefox Focus browser for iOS and Android that was released at the end of 2015 has rolled out a slick new update, one that refreshes both the visuals as well as significantly tweaking its performance on Android devices.

Per 9to5Google, as part of the new update Mozilla is making the visual design on each platform now line up more closely with the design cues from Android Pie and iOS 12. “Some of the Android changes include updated icons, a simpler settings menu, and a new URL bar.”

More important, though, is the fact that the Android version of Firefox Focus is now based around Mozilla’s new GeckoView browser engine, which the company says makes it something of a pioneer among its Android apps. Among other things, that paves the way for Mozilla to bring important new privacy-centric enhancements in the future.

Explains the company via a blog post, “Switching to GeckoView will give Focus the benefits of Gecko’s Quantum improvements and enables Mozilla to implement unique privacy-enhancing features in the future, such as reducing the potential of third party collection. For now, you won’t notice much, but you’ll be helping us create the next generation of Firefox browsers just by using Focus, and we’ll return the favor by giving our Focus users unique features that other browsers on Android simply won’t be able to offer.”

Among the other highlights:

The new release gives iOS users something they’ve been asking for: Siri Shortcuts. Now, iOS users can use shortcuts to do things like set and open websites or erase and open Firefox Focus.

In terms of visual style, Android users will see a customized URL bar and a simplified settings menu to provide for a more consistent user experience. The visuals for iOS users have likewise been given an overall refresh, and beyond that this release not only includes making search suggestions available but turning them off by default.

“Search suggestions are a key part of web search that can make searching more convenient,” the Mozilla blog post notes. “Easily activate the feature by opening the app settings > ‘Search’ > select the checkbox ‘Get search suggestions.’ We’re aware that privacy is a top priority for many Firefox Focus users and you might not want to share what you’re typing in the address bar with your search provider. So, the feature is turned ‘off’ by default and we let you choose whether or not you want to turn it on.”

The latest version of Firefox Focus for Android and iOS is now available for download on Google Play, in the iOS App Store as well as in the Samsung store.

Sports / Ronaldo Watches Juventus Match From The Stands Alongside His Girlfriend by LekkiGists: 1:03am On Oct 03, 2018

Cristiano Ronaldo watched on from the stands as he was forced to miss Juventus’ clash with Young Boys in the Champions League.

Ronaldo is serving his mandatory one-game suspension after being sent off during the group opener against Valencia last month. He managed to get a longer ban overturned, meaning he only has to sit out of the one game as per UEFA regulations.

Ronaldo did, however, take his place in the stands alongside girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez and his eldest son, Cristiano Jr. He watched on as Paulo Dybala took the goalscoring initiative for Juve, notching a hat-trick to send the Italian side on their way to victory.

Ronaldo missed Monday’s training session as Juve bosses gave him an additional rest period after playing at the weekend.

The 33-year-old has been in the news this week after an American model alleged that she was the victim of a cex assault by Ronaldo back in 2009.

Ronaldo has strongly denied all of the claims and appeared in an Instagram video over the weekend, where he said: “No, no, no, no, no. What they said today? Fake, fake news.”

But Las Vegas police have announced that they are reopening the investigation into the allegations.

A statement released on Monday read: “The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call of sexual assault on June 13, 2009. At the time the report was taken, the victim did not provide detectives with the location of the incident or suspect description. A medical exam was conducted.

“As of September 2018, the case has been reopened and our detectives are following up on information being provided by the victim. This is an on-going investigation and no further details will be released at this time.”

Politics / "Never Will I Run For Office , Whose Nomination Form Is N100K" - Obi Ezekwesili by LekkiGists: 9:46pm On Sep 11, 2018
Former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili has said she will never run for office under a party whose nomination form is more than N100, 000.

The Co-Covener of the BringBackOurGirls campaign made this statement via Twitter on Tuesday.

Mrs Ezekwesili, who has been championing the ‘office of the citizen’ campaign on social media has never hidden her displeasure at the exuberant cost of the All Progressives Congress(APC) nomination forms.

She also berated president Muhammadu Buhari for throwing integrity through the backdoor by accepting the gift of N45m nomination form purchased for him by a group .

This may have prompted Ezekwesili’s resolve, never to accept to be part of a political party whose forms cost a fortune to purchase. She also noted that she wouldn’t want any group buying the form for her.

The Brazilian government has given Yoruba a pride of place among foreign languages spoken in the country. in an exclusive interview with the Brazilian minister of culture
Dr Sérgio Sá leitão at the weekend in Brazil that the government has introduced the compulsory study of African History and Yoruba language into the primary and secondary schools curriculum.

The minister spoke at an event where the Institute of African Studies, University of Sao Paulo, in Brazil paraded important dignitaries including Nigerian artists and historians, as well as professors of arts and African studies at a lecture on the importance of Yoruba language in the Brazilian culture and tradition.

According to him, the inclusion of African History and Yoruba Language in the curriculum would help bring the closeness of the African Brazilian people to their roots and thus encourage the understandings of the language among other important languages in Brazil apart from Portuguese which is the official language.

The minister also mentioned the role played by Brazil during the festival of arts and culture, ‘FESTAC 77’, held in Lagos, Nigeria in 1977; the constant intercultural programmes between Nigeria and Brazil; the annual carnival of Arts, music and cultural displays featuring prominent African artists and Yoruba writers such as Yinka Shonibare, Adeyinka Olaiya, El Anatsui among many others, including the highly respected Yoruba writer, Professor Wande Abimbola.

Speaking at the event, Peruvian Nobel laureate, Prof. Mário Vargas Llosa also made mention of the African community in Peru where the African Peruvians are settled till date. Vargas Llosa, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010, is known as one of Latin America’s most significant novelists and essayists, and one of the leading writers of his generation.

According to Vargas Llosa, Yoruba people and their culture have helped the universe, IFA has proven his existence in the beings of mankind right from the inception and IFA is still very much alive and needs to be recognized even more than it is today.

According to Prof Mário Vargas, the Yoruba language should no longer be approached as an ethnic language but a universal language that is alive in culture and tradition of the Africans and her roots around the universe.

Speaking in Yoruba and Portuguese, Prof Katiuscia Ribeiro of the Institute of African Studies drew attention to the African philosophical practices introducing the constant representation of the Yoruba culture and religion in the Brazilian traditional beliefs.

NewsmakersNG learnt that the Yoruba traditional religion today comes after the Catholic practices as the most improving religious practices in the South American country. Several houses of worships called “ILE ASE” are having the Yoruba culture, tradition and language as official, whenever the cults are declared open for the day. Babalawo, Iyalawo, Omo Awo, and Aborisa are all common Yoruba usages in the practice of the Yoruba religion called Candomblé in Brazil.

A Nigerian carnival artist, painter and illustrator, Adeyinka Olaiya, also expressed the benefits the Yoruba language would bring to the Brazilian culture if fully integrated into the Brazilian educational curriculum.

According to Olaiya, living in Salvador, Brazil, is like living in any of the western states of Nigeria where the Yoruba are predominantly located.

He said, “Most of the cultures and traditions in evidence in Brazil are all of the heritages brought along to the Latin American country by the majority Yoruba families, victims of the BARCO NEGREIROS, the NEGRO BOAT that forcefully brought the enslaved West Africans to Brazil in the 13th century.
