Nairaland / General / Do You Have An Idea How The Aso Villa Looks Like? by lekzwyc(m): 4:25am On Oct 11, 2013
I have seen a lot of movies, alot of them featuring the white house from the entrance and some rooms therein if not all among them are air force one, In the loop, Big miracle, absolute power e.t.c recent ones include 2012, olympus has fallen, white house down, lincoln among others. Everybody in the world can say vividly what the white house looks like but here in Nigeria I haven't seen any real picture of aso villa anywhere from the entrance to the main presidential suite either on news or in movies. So, my nairalander if anyone here has any picture of anywhere in aso villa, lets see it. It could be fun.

Politics / My Kobo Advice For Mr President By Dele Momodu. An Open Letter To GEJ by lekzwyc(m): 12:54am On Dec 11, 2012
Your Excellency, please permit me to commiserate with you on the unfortunate and untimely death of your dearly beloved brother. I sincerely join other Nigerians in mourning what must have been a sad loss for you and your family in particular. As you travel back home to your tranquil village to pay your last respects, I pray you ponder on the free advice I’m about to offer you in good faith. Even if you’ve already returned to the gilded cage of Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, I wish to plead that you find the time to read this open letter which I would have communicated directly if I had the privilege of a private meeting with you.

Perhaps, I should quickly introduce myself as a journalist and politician.  Though I have seen you a few times at functions, we have never properly met. The only time we ever shook hands was when I joined others to mourn the death of, and celebrate, your father in Otueke village of Bayelsa State when you were still Vice President. I also saw you briefly in South Africa in 2009 but did not approach your table because your bodyguards didn’t look like they would appreciate any lesser mortal disturbing your peace.

I was amazed because I had just left the official residence of President Jacob Zuma in Pretoria and did not see more than a few guards in the house. I had spent quality time with him without any other soul than my South African friend I went with. I had gone there in a rented taxi but no one had asked us to go through metal/bomb detectors; or to drop our phones with members of the secret service. I did not see any ADC, CSO, CSD or any other security aide with similar nomenclature only known to, and made in, Nigeria. I think we just love big titles.

Anyway, I saw you again when you invited Presidential candidates, of which I was one, to Aso Rock, last year to brief us on the need for peace during the elections. I doubt if you saw me, though the invitation came from your office. Most of the candidates snubbed you but I chose to attend out of respect for your person and office. I remember seeing Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, who sat close to me, and Mr John Dara and so many politicians who I believed came because it was Aso Rock but really had no roles to play. Unfortunately, that meeting was nothing but a waste of time. You came and without even shaking hands with your co-contestants delivered your homily, answered a few questions and disappeared. There were no banters or interactions with us to cement a bond of friendship even if we wanted to take over your office.

I was surprised that you or your aides could not persuade most of the candidates to attend. Yet you went ahead to host an event that was obviously doomed before it began. I can only imagine how much was charged Nigeria for such hogwash. Ghana held a similar peace conference about two weeks ago and it was a star studded event. Part of great leadership quality is the ability to attract certified enemies and convince them to rise above prejudices and pettiness. I believe you have not reached out enough. Your aides have also not helped matters by their paranoia and neurotic approach to issues. They see enemies where none exist and fire all guns blazing at shadows. That is not how to build a nation.

One more example should suffice. You went on an official visit to Ghana.  I was invited by the then Nigeria High Commissioner to Ghana, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, to attend the brief reception held for you at our High Commission in Accra. Again, it was impossible for most of us to have a simple handshake with you as your security aides practically treated us like common criminals unworthy of communion with the Almighty.  I finally gave up.

Sir, let me say emphatically that the biggest problem with Nigerian leaders is that once they attain power, they vacate this earth and migrate to another planet far away from fellow citizens. Leaders are elected to serve the people but in Nigeria we are compelled to serve our leaders and if possible starve to death in the process. We are not allowed to ask questions about how we are led or in reality, misled. This is the reason it is difficult for most of you to know what goes on in the real world. I suggest you borrow a leaf from Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola whose style fascinates me to no end. He drives through Lagos with no disruption to the lives of the people.

He responds promptly to reasonable text messages and emails. I know you’re very busy, but take time to see how President Obama jogs down or sprints up the Air Force One. It demonstrates a man on a mission.  Feel free to drive on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and see things for yourself. Go into a pub and mix with the boys like President Clinton once did in Ireland. Refrain from blocking the house of God because you are attending a church service. Sir, no evil shall befall you. You are too distant from the people you lead. Show them love and you shall reap bountiful adoration. No massive security is necessary, once you make God first and suffer not his people. Conversely total security is no security where there is no Godliness. The love and prayers of Nigerians will keep you going.

I have decided to adopt a new approach in my column. I will take it upon myself to write this open letter as regularly as necessary and proffer solutions to different issues, in the hope that you will get to read it. I will tell you what your aides will never tell you. It is up to you to carefully read what I write and take your own decision. Let it be said that we told you but did nothing about it. I would have freed myself from the burden of “siddon-look.” I’m reasonably convinced that if you know the magnitude of problems confronting Nigerians you will work harder and change your style of governance unless you’re determined to fail spectacularly like others before you. I pray this will not be your portion.

Let me state categorically that I write this letter without any malice. More importantly I expect no personal gratification other than to see change in the lives of our people. I needed to make that clear since it is now in our culture to read motives to every good intention.

I have no other reason than out of patriotic fervour. I have not been to Abuja since last year because I’m dutifully engaged at home and abroad, and really have no reason to run up and down the corridors of power like the proverbial yo-yo. Every man must determine his needs in life. I know mine and I am happy and content to manage whatever God in his infinite kindness has given to me. We all have friends and families who have nowhere to go. If Nigeria becomes the country of our dream and there is a level playground for all of us, most citizens would thrive without living like pathological beggars. You’re in a position to leave Nigeria better than you met it. Look at most of the politicians and businessmen around you today. They were the same faces you saw with your predecessors. You are their new god today because of your position. Tomorrow, when you have departed, as you surely must do, they will move on again to the next person, without any qualms.

I have studied men and women of power at home and abroad and have sympathy for their tragic flaws . My discovery is that most leaders often fail to remember that whatever has a beginning must have an end.  Time also flies. And it waits for nobody.  Who could have imagined PDP in power since 1999 with nothing tangible to show for all the trillions of naira spent by various administrations? Who would believe that President Olusegun Obasanjo’s two terms came and disappeared within a twinkle of an eye? Or that even you have spent two years already as President and Commander-in-Chief?  The question that will later haunt you, as it is haunting others before you, for the rest of time is: what did you do with all your time in office and all the resources under your control?
I will say without any fear of contradiction that the money at your disposal right now is enough to transform Nigeria into a true giant if frugally managed. I will now go on to demonstrate what I mean.

Sir, for every one billion naira we waste on frivolous projects, the dream of a fresh thousand millionaires would have perished. If you hand me the N2.2 billion naira you are about to spend on building a new banquet suite in Aso Rock, I will instantly create 2,200 brand-new millionaire farmers from our large army of brilliant but unemployed youths.  Each of them would be able to employ 10 to 20 people in production, preservation, processing and distribution. If you think I’m joking, please hand me the money and I will urgently invite applications from potential beneficiaries. I and my team pledge not to earn a kobo from the project.

If I may ask, what is wrong with the banquet suite you presently have? Is it not better to spend money on providing jobs than trying to show off to visitors that we are prosperous in the midst of wanton poverty? I’m writing this letter from Cambridge University, one of the oldest surviving institutions of learning. The buildings of most Colleges here are as ancient as history, yet there is no plan to demolish them and build new ones. The problem with us is lack of a maintenance culture. You can rehabilitate the old banquet suite with less than N100 million and turn it into an architectural masterpiece. I’m sure you won’t spend your personal money the way ours is being poured away like rain water. Do you know how old Buckingham Palace is? If it was in Nigeria, we would have demolished it many times over in order to award some horrendous contracts.

I gather you want to build a new home for the Vice President at over N6 billion. This is sinful in a nation with over 12 generations of unemployed, and unemployable, graduates. What is wrong with the current Vice President’s home, Akinola Aguda House and wherever Alhaji Atiku Abubakar once lived? It smacks of gross insensitivity to waste resources in this manner. Please, give us that N6 billion and I will give you 6,000 productive millionaire entrepreneurs in Nigeria. Imagine each of them employing 10 people within the first year or two, we would have taken more than 60,000 youths off the streets. We’ve done it several times through Goke Dokun’s creative Entrepreneur Series on television and can do it even bigger in real life. As President, I would rather do this than build a home for a family of less than 50 people.

Mr President, Nigerians are not difficult to lead. In fact, we get carried away by little mercies. I know you have your sight on contesting elections in 2015. Let me assure you that you won’t have to campaign much, or spend billions to get re-elected if you listen to me. All you have to do is demonstrate to Nigerians that you can resist those carpetbaggers who see power only in terms of enjoyment. The world is building monuments and creating new inventions everywhere but we are busy wasting ours on flights of fancy like super jets, palaces, women and champagnes. We can do a lot better because God has endowed us with all we need to be among the greatest of the world. All it takes a little bit of vision and discipline.

Sir, there is nothing you want in life that God has not given you on a platter of gold. It is time for you to reciprocate by humbling yourself like all Saints. I will tell you about them and great names in history when I write my next epistle to you. If you hearken to the voice of reason, you will etch your name in gold.

Truly, like Jesus Christ (apologies to Christians), you will ride triumphantly into your own Jerusalem.

Let me give you one technique.

Get a set of very identical twins in identical clothing. Dress one of them injured. (We now have hollywood zombie make up artists.)

Keep rhe injured one in the crowd and one behind the stage. Call the injured one to the stage, cast a fake spell on him in the name of Jesus. The injured one falls and trembles. Your ushers carry him out to the backstage and then you give the signal to the healthy one.

The healthy one runs out, he shouts "alleluyah, I am healed". Everybody Shouts "god is a god of miracles"!
If those miracles are staged, there would be someome like you who would've proved him wrong by some hard evidence over the past decades. People like you would've gather those people who were staged in the name of miracle to come out and speak the truth about JB Joshua. Am very sure people have been looking for evidence to prove him wrong. If you take a look at him very closely, watch his teachings will know what am talking about

Religion / "Arresting The Power Of Darkness" by lekzwyc(m): 10:56am On Oct 14, 2012
I read this just now and I want to share it with you guys....
God always seems to be missing in action when we need him the most.

Imagine you are at a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan.  Suddenly, some policemen come in to arrest him.  The President refuses to alert the National Guard.  He does not call the army.  When one of his Secret Service details tries to defend him, the President restrains him.  Then he tells his abductors: “Well, you guys could not arrest me before.  But now is your moment.  Okay, let us go.”  So he holds out his hands and they handcuff him and lead him away.  Would you not conclude something strange is going on?

Strange things happen in the bible.  I am not talking about the Red Sea parting or the walls of Jericho falling down.  There is nothing strange about that.  But how come a Prince of Persia restrained God’s answer to Daniel’s prayer for twenty-one days? (Daniel 10:12-13).  Who is this Prince of Persia?  What power did he use?  When Jesus was born; his parents had to run away with him to Egypt from Herod.  What is the meaning of that?  How can the King of kings run from a fake king?  Why can’t God just send some anopheles mosquitoes to bite Herod?

Imagine a situation where a thief steals a car only to discover it belongs to the Inspector General of Police?  What do you think he would do?  Of course, he would return the car immediately.  So answer me this.  How can a so-called boss in the office sit on the promotion of a child of God?  How can the Boko Haram successfully attack a church where sons of the kingdom are worshipping the Lord?  How can?  How can?  How can?  Why does God tolerate this kind of nonsense?  If God be for us, who can be against us?  I want to know the person.  Who has the audacity?  Who are you, O great mountain, to stand before Zerubbabel?

Power of darkness

God always seems to be missing in action when we need him the most.  Where is God when armed robbers come into our houses and cart away our choice possessions?  Where is God when sons of God are abused, mistreated, raped, plundered, and massacred?  “Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani?”  “Our God, our God, why have you forsaken us? Why are you so far from helping us?” (Psalm 22:1).

Indeed, where was God when they came to arrest Jesus?  How come some evil men could arrest the King of glory?  Jesus said to them: “Why didn’t you arrest me in the Temple? I was there every day. But this is your moment- the time when Satan’s power reigns supreme.” (Luke 22:53).

Are we hearing correctly?  Is Jesus by any means acknowledging the power of darkness?  Yes he is!  This reveals an important kingdom dynamic: there are moments, even in the life of the Son of God, when Satan’s power reigns supreme.

Make no mistake about it; the power of darkness is real.  Evil men have long tapped into it for diabolical means.  The power of darkness arrested Jesus, nailed him to the cross and buried him in a tomb.  What did God do while this was going on?  Absolutely nothing!  God just stood watching.  But since the power of darkness is real, should believers fear it?  Not at all!

Night and day

At the dawn of creation, darkness was everywhere.  Then God said: “Let there be light,” and there was light.  In bringing about light, God created time.  Although light scattered the darkness, God nevertheless apportioned some time to darkness for better appreciation of light.  He divided time between light and darkness.  So darkness has its place and its use.  God called the light “Day” and the darkness “Night.” (Genesis 1:4-5).  Unlike man’s skewed morning-evening categorization, God’s evenings come before the mornings. (Genesis 1:5).

As a result, the earth is bound by time arising from the interchange between darkness and light.  Therefore, every twenty-four hours, we not only bask in daylight but are equally confronted by darkness.  That is God’s providence.  This means we must not be dismayed when it is nightfall knowing another day is coming.  Jesus says evil is by appointment: “Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34).

In this world, we must expect trouble and peace, sorrow and joy; and set the one against the other.  We should accommodate both confident that: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5).  Why should the wicked prosper?   That is like asking: “Why should night fall?”  God has allocated a time, more like a moment, for the ungodly to prosper.  Don’t waste your time envying someone headed for the firing-squad.  Before he is executed, he is allowed to request whatever meal takes his fancy.  Don’t be so foolish as to envy a man eating his last meal.

Supremacy of light

Know of a surety that light has supremacy over darkness.  Moses says God made two great lights.  The greater light rules the day: the lesser light rules the night. (Genesis 1:16-18).  Light was made the ruler of darkness.  Sunlight ruled the day.  But even at night, God provided some modicum of light.  The moonlight and the stars were made to rule the night. (Psalm 136:9).  But darkness was not given authority to rule the day in any capacity whatsoever.

John says of Jesus: “In him was life, and the life was the light of men.  And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” (John 1:4-5).  Darkness can never extinguish light.  It can never overcome it.  Therefore, even in the darkest place, God retains some measure of light.

Jesus says to believers: “You are the world’s light- a city on a hill, glowing in the night for all to see.  Don’t hide your light! Let it shine for all; let your good deeds glow for all to see, so that they will praise your heavenly Father.” (Matthew 5:14-16).

Ruler of darkness

Believers are called to neutralise the power of darkness.  When light shows up, darkness must recede.  The devil is a ruler of the darkness of this world.  He is not a ruler of the light.  He only operates in darkness; he cannot operate in the light.  But believers are the light of the world.  We not only rule; we overrule the darkness of this world.  Therefore, as long as we walk in the light, darkness can neither comprehend nor overcome us.

Just as he allows darkness to come every night, so has God made allowances for the power of darkness to prevail at certain times.  That is why Jesus was extremely time-conscious.  He said: “I must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” (John 9:4).

Why were they able to kill Jesus?  They did so because it was it in the dead of night.  But on the third day, very early in the morning, Jesus rose victoriously from the dead.

“Your dead shall live; together with my dead body they shall arise. Awake and sing, you who dwell in dust; for your dew is like the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.” (Isaiah 26:19).
Computers / iPad Mini Will Accelerate The Tablet War - Forbes by lekzwyc(m): 7:06pm On Jul 10, 2012
Over the last few days, would be reports of Apple (Apple) bringing a smaller iPad to market have been gathering steam. Its no secret that Apple has an intensely loyal customer base across all its i-products, but given the number of industries that it impacts, Apple is an extremely watched if not scrutinized company. With good reason, through its hardware products, software and iTunes offering it has transformed the way people buy and consume a number of products – musics, TV, movies, podcasts, games, apps and software to name just a few — on devices that did not exist – or were not mainstream – until Apple introduced them.

A key chapter in any consumer electronic company’s handbook is shrinking its product to make the design smaller or at least slimmer. We can look at any number of past products from radios to cameras and video cameras to PCs and TVs. Those last two have witnessed extreme form factor compression over the years, while all of them have fallen victim to falling average selling prices (ASPs) as well. TVs in particular have gone from large and bulky to extremely thing given the rise of LCD, LED and more recently OLED technology. All of that has benefiting companies like Cree (CREE) and Universal Display (PANL).

Part of that device price compression reflects the competitive environment, but it is also driven by vendors seeking to expand the target market for their products. After all, companies like to attack large markets with their products and dropping prices and introducing lower priced and potentially smaller versions is a tried and true way of expanding that addressable market beyond the high-end.

Apple has done this in the past extremely well via the iPod and the follow up iPod mini, iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle. iPod aside, Apple has also introduced smaller, thinner products in its Mac line of products in the form of its Macbook Air and to some degree with its Mac mini. Over the last fast years since Apple first introduced its market share leading iPhone, there have been a number of rumors over a smaller form factor offering and as yet one has yet to emerge. But with competitors already bringing smaller tablet form factor products to market at more affordable prices, it seems likely that Apple will respond rather than sit on the sidelines as other companies look to beat it in a market that it helped create if not re-create. These competitors include Amazon (AMZN) with its Kindle Fire, Google (GOOG) and its Nexus 7, Barnes & Noble (BKS) with its Nook, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.

I’ve shared my view that industries over time tend to consolidate around less than a handful of companies and over time those companies have the lion’s share of the market. PCs and the basic/feature mobile phone market offer great proof points for this but so do TVs and other consumer electronics. It looks as if we are getting ready for the next round in the Tablet Wars and it should be no surprise as to what comes next even though more competitors keep throwing their hat into the ring. The most recent one to do this was Microsoft (MSFT) with its Surface tablet and one has to wonder how long until Microsoft announces a smaller form factor version.

So who wins or at least benefits in the tablet wars?

Using history as a guide, most of the device vendors will not benefit in a significant way over the long-term given price competition and the need to ratchet up marketing dollars in a bid to build their respective brand. Some will make a go of it and drop out over time, while others will fade from existence like the way Palm, Danger and Sendo did in the mobile phone/smartphone space. In my view, the most likely winners – read that as the top three by volume – long-term are likely to be Apple, Amazon and a Google- Android powered version by either Google-Motorola or Samsung. But odds are that will be a long and costly battle in what will be a larger Connected Devices War.

From a different investing vantage point, there are a number of key suppliers that are poised to benefit as the Tablet War heats up. From glass suppliers like Corning (GLW) to touch capacitive solutions from Synaptics (SYNA) and Silicon Labs (SLAB) and RF solution and baseband companies, like Skyworks Solutions (SWKS), RF Micro Devices (RFMD), TriQuint Semiconductor (TQNT), Qualcomm (QCOM) and Broadcom (BRCM) among others. Not surprisingly, most if not all of these companies are also benefiting from the Smartphone Explosion that is going on. Some like Synaptics may not benefit as much given the cannibalization in the notebook PC market. Together these mounting vendor wars will drive incremental demand for component suppliers, but longer term investors will need to identify those suppliers that are well positioned with those few companies that will be the ultimate hardware winners.

Two stocks investors should watch with an eye toward buying as we battle through the upcoming 2Q 2012 earnings season are Qualcomm and Skyworks, with Corning and RF Micro on the contender list.
