Politics / How Bandits Wasted Lives Of Over 213 Soldiers & Civilians In Katsina State by Leybari: 3:07am On Nov 26, 2021
President Muhammadu Buhari’s home state Katsina has lost 213 people over the span of four months to banditry. In addition, 676 people were kidnapped between July until October 2021.

Secretary to the Katsina State Government, Dr Mustapha Inuwa, addressed this urgent issue while speaking on the development of combatting banditry orders recently signed by Governor Aminu Bello Masari.

“On the whole, the statistics with regards to banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling from the commencement of the containment order to date has revealed a drastic reduction in the number of reported cases,” Dr Inuwa spoke to reporters on Thursday.

“For instance, for the period of July/August 2021, there were a total of 173 reported kidnap incidents affecting 475 persons; whereas for September/October 2021, 61 kidnap incidents occurred with 201 victims.”

He added that around 724 suspected bandits and other criminals terrorising communities had been arrested by security agencies within the period under review.

“Banditry cases for the same corresponding periods were 97 incidents for July/August 2021 with 130 deaths and 57 injured and 56 incidents for September/October 2021 with 83 deaths and 58 injured,” the secretary noted.

Politics / Unlike In Kanu's Case, We Are Following Due Process On Igboho's Extradition. by Leybari: 2:53am On Nov 26, 2021
As Igboho set to arrive Nigeria any minute....

The Nigerian government is almost done with processing the extradition of Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

Igboho was arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic on July 19 after he fled Nigeria when his Ibadan home was invaded by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS).

The Yoruba separatist leader is currently in detention in Benin Republic but the Punch reports that the DSS has disclosed that efforts are being made to bring him back to Nigeria.

A DSS operative Johnson Oluwole stated this in an affidavit presented before an Ibadan high court in Ibadan on Monday, November 22.

The affidavit titled ‘Applicants affidavit in support of its motion on notice for a stay of execution of the judgement of this suit No/M/435/2021 and an injunction pending the determination of the pending appeal’ partly reads, “That it is a fact that the applicant Chief Sunday Igboho has been declared a fugitive by the Nigerian Police Force sometimes in June 2021.

That it is a notorious fact that the applicant was arrested on July 19 2021, and is currently in the custody of the Beninese security agents undergoing extradition procedure back to Nigeria.

“That it is a fact that it will be inequitable for this honorable court to refuse this application for stay against the background that the applicant is a fugitive undergoing extradition processing in Benin Republic.”

Igboho, through his lawyer Yomi Aliyu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), had filed a suit against the DSS before the Ibadan high court.

The court ordered the DSS to pay Igboho the sum of N20 billion naira as exemplary damages.

Politics / Nigeria Government Furious Because We Rejected Their Narrative -#endsars Panel by Leybari: 2:22pm On Nov 19, 2021
We would have been praised to high heavens if we had accepted govt’s false claims that no body died and that hoodlums operated at Lekki tollgate – Panel member

Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), one of the members of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and other matters, has said that members of the panel would have been praised if they had bought into the narrative of the government that hoodlums operated at the Lekki toll gate on October 20, 2020.

He also said that it was unfortunate that some agents of government have been attacking his integrity and those of other members of the panel since the submission of the report of their Lekki findings.

Adegboruwa made this known in a statement on Thursday titled, ‘EndSARS Panel: I acted on the mandate of the governor’.

Many Nigerians have been outraged by the panel’s report which is at variance with the consistent claim by the government that there was no “massacre” at the toll gate, a focal gathering point during last year’s nationwide demonstration against extrajudicial killings and police brutality by operatives of the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force.

However, the panel members have also been commended for standing for truth and justice in the face of intimidation.

In his statement on Friday, Adegboruwa said, “I have listened to the narratives of the Lagos State Government through one of its Learned Senior Counsel at the #EndSARS Panel, to the effect that Nigerians should reject the report of the Panel because I signed it, since I was not present at some of the sittings of the Panel.

I served on the Panel on the mandate of the Governor of Lagos State, who told me on telephone that I was chosen to represent civil society.

“My principled struggles in respect of toll fee collection started way back from 2011, almost nine years before the Panel was inaugurated. Indeed, the Governor said that these were the factors that favoured my selection as a member of the Panel. Will I then deny myself, forfeit my reputation and discredit my constituency, my colleagues in the Nigerian Bar Association and comrades in civil society, in order to please anybody or cover up the truth? NEVER!

“It is therefore improper for Lagos State Government, through its lawyer that appeared before the Panel and other sponsored agents, to subject the report of the Panel and indeed the integrity of Panel members to media trials and attacks, all in the bid to build up the contents of its White Paper, which we can now reasonably foretell, from these sponsored media attacks.

“It is indeed uncharitable for the same government that urged the Panel not to be held down by strict rules of technicalities of law in order to unravel the real truth about the Lekki Toll Gate Incident, to now through its counsel, talk about alleged legal discrepancies, to frustrate the good work of the Panel that it set up.

“There are documents to back up and defend the report submitted to the Governor by the Panel but I have chosen to defer to His Excellency and to await the White Paper as promised, because I believe that the Governor meant well in setting up the Panel and giving us free hand to operate. I appeal to His Excellency to continue in that note of sincerity.

“There is no minority report from the Panel as the report submitted to the Governor on November 15, 2021 was unanimously endorsed by all members of the Panel, who worked tirelessly, day and night, to serve the government and the people, even at great risks to their health, personal safety, career and family obligations and their general well-being.

“I’m very sure that Panel members would have been lionized and praised to the highest heavens if we had bought into the false and fraudulent narrative of the government before the Panel that it was criminals, cultists, hoodlums and unknown gunmen that operated at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020.

“I urge the government to focus on the findings and far-reaching recommendations contained in the report, in order to pursue the laudable objectives of setting up the Panel to achieve true healing and reconciliation, instead of seeking to demonize Panel members and their report or to evade responsibility.”

Politics / Lekki Massacre: CNN’s Lawyer Tackles Lai Mohammed, Asks Him To Apologize by Leybari: 12:38pm On Nov 17, 2021
Cable News Network (CNN) council to Nigeria, Olumide Babalola, has called on Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, to eschew his pride and tender an apology to the medium for tagging it a fake news outfit after an investigative report carried out by the American media house on the killing of protesters at the Lekki Tollgate on October 20, 2020.

In a statement on Tuesday, Babalola said the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and other matters report had vindicated the CNN’s investigative report, titled, ‘How a bloody night of bullets and brutality quashed a young protest movement’.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed should eschew his pride and apologise to the CNN if he has any integrity left.

“He has consistently claimed that the CNN’s report of massacre was false, but the panel has vindicated the CNN’s position on the gruesome and wanton killings at the Lekki Tollgate.

“Without necessarily saying more on this, since the same Minister had earlier called on the CNN to apologise for fake news, which has now been quasi-judicially proved to be true, one would think the honourable thing for Alhaji Mohammed to do, as an elder statesman and learned gentleman, is to apologise to the CNN especially.

“However, as we continue to wait on the Minister and the Federal Government’s next move, I sympathise with families of all the victims of Lekki massacre, while we pray for the souls of the departed and hope the government implements the report in full,” Babalola said.

He recalled that the minister had railed at the CNN over the report, which he tagged ‘fake news’ and threatened sanctions against the media house

“In the light of the report by the judicial panel, Mohammed ought to eat the humble pie and apologise to the CNN,” Babalola added.

Politics / Lai Mohammed Mocks APC Party Leaders, Calls Them Jesters by Leybari: 4:44pm On Nov 16, 2021

Leaders and elders of the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have slammed the minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, over his comments against Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The elders, were reacting to the comments made by the minister about the governor in a recent newspaper interview.

According to their spokesman, Ambassador Nurudeen Mohammed at a news conference in Ilorin, the state capital on Monday, “For Lai Mohammed to denigrate Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s political status in Kwara State and his role in the funding of the 2019 elections is most unfortunate”.

He said the minister “was exported to the state from Lagos to take over governance like his colleagues in other Yoruba states at the expense of the people (politicians) who had been on the ground for decades.”

On the funding of the 2019 elections in the state, he noted that the governor and members of the state and national assemblies had denied receiving a dime from the minister.

Reacting to the development, a member of the minister’s caucus in Kwara and factional Financial Secretary, Tajudeen Mohammed, told Daily Trust that the so-called elders were only jesters.

“If they now say the minister is not on ground how did their leader, the governor emerge? The minister worked for the victory of everybody during the election. And on the issue of reconciliation, we are not the ones fighting the party, it is them,” he said.

Politics / Create Federal Ministry Of Fulani Herdsmen Now —Gumi by Leybari: 12:45am On Nov 06, 2021
by Abdullahi Hammed

The Scholar Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, on Friday, has called President Muhammadu Buhari to create a federal ministry of Fulani herdsmen to address the grievances of bandits and killer herders terrorising the country.

Mr Gumi, a self-appointed intermediary in the ongoing crises of banditry and killer herdsmen, said in a Facebook post on Friday that bandits should be rehabilitated.

Some said we have tried amnesty but it didn’t work. You didn’t try amnesty but tried amnesia. Amnesty without rehabilitation, reconciliation, and reparation is no amnesty,” Mr Gumi said.

“Ask the former Niger Delta Militants who were bursting pipelines in the past what an amnesty is. What stops us from having a federal ministry of Nomadic Affairs where their grievances and complaints will be addressed?”

Mr Gumi’s statement came days after Katsina Governor Aminu Masari openly admitted that Fulanis are the bandits and herders responsible for the widespread killing and abduction across the country.

Mr Gumi said his efforts to get amnesty for bandits and killer herdsmen have been sabotaged by President Muhammadu Buhari’s decision to deploy troops against violent criminals.

Politics / Hundreds Flee Homes As ISWAP Overpowers Army In Borno Town - Daily Trust by Leybari: 3:13pm On Nov 04, 2021
Hundreds of civilians fled their homes when suspected fighters of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) attacked Damboa town in the southern part of Borno last night, sources said.

It was learnt that the ISWAP fighters rode on utility vehicles to storm the town at about 5:30pm, raining bullets on-air as civilians ran into bushes.

An aid worker who did not want his name in the print disclosed that they heard heavy gunshots and there was confusion everywhere because it was already getting dark when the insurgents penetrated the town.

“Hundreds of people are in the bushes as we speak now, the heavy gunshots were scary and there was a state of confusion in the town as women and children were crying.

“They entered into the town but some policemen said they voluntary left after about an hour of gunfire.

A security source who spoke to our correspondent said the attackers who came with several Anti-Aircraft guns (AA) attacked the Mobile Police Base and overpowered the riots police before moving into the town.

“They came with several AA guns mounted on utility vehicles, shooting heavily and attacked the Mopol base but unfortunately they overpowered the police before entering into the town.

This came less than 24 hours after the group also attacked Kwada village in Chibok where four soldiers were severely wounded and one armoured personnel carrier (APC) was burnt down with a gun truck equally stolen from troops.

Our correspondent could not ascertain the level of destruction and casualty figure on both sides as of the time of filing this report.

Politics / Arrest Of Obi Cubana Will Worsen Insecurity In Anambra – Nigerians Warn EFCC by Leybari: 9:03am On Nov 02, 2021
report of the arrest of obi cubana which flooded the social media on Monday night, generated reactions from concerned Nigerians as many took to their social media handles to express concern over the repercussions of the move on the November 6 governorship elections in Anambra State.

Recall that Obi Cubana made headlines and became the talk of the town in July when he hosted an ostentatious burial for his late mother in Oba, Anambra State, in which over 200 cows were reportedly slaughtered.

The lavish display of wealth set tongues wagging, with many Nigerians wondering about his source of wealth. Several celebrities, businessmen and women, including politicians turned out in large numbers for the funeral.

The popular socialite subsequently became a role model to several Nigerian youths, including the Big Brother Naija, BBNaija 2021 winner, Whitemoney who aimed to venture into business with the hope of becoming successful like Obi Cubana.

Some Nigerians, particularly youths who chatted with DAILY POST on Tuesday morning, said the arrest may worsen the already deteriorated security situation in Anambra State.

An On Air Personality, OAP in a popular radio station in Abuja, Adeyemo Michael, a.k.a Mr Microphone, told our correspondent that the arrest is coming at a time when Obi Cubana’s state of origin is already tensed up.

He said, “This is definitely not the right time for this drama. You and I know how the business man is regarded in Anambra State with millions of supporters in the Southeast.

“If they fail to release him today, I’m not sure the governorship election will hold. This is definitely not what we are expecting from the federal government right now”.

Another respondent, a spare parts trader in the nation’s capital who identified himself as Ifeanyi, told DAILY POST that the federal government has just added to the problems of the Southeast.

He lamented that despite calls for the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to free Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, the government has arrested another popular and very important citizen of the region.

“The IPOB members are commencing a one-week sit-at-home beginning from Thursday over the arrest of our beloved Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who has been detained in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, for just demanding for his right.

“We have not even finished Kanu’s own, now they have kidnapped another important son of the soil. This shows that this government is actually against the Igbos,” he said.

Politics / Declare Bandits Federal Civil Servants’ — Shehu Sani Taunts Buhari Govt by Leybari: 10:48am On Nov 01, 2021
Former Kaduna senator, Shehu Sani, has reproached the Muhammadu Buhari administration for its failure to declare bandits terrorists.

As bandits continue to unleash their unrestrained reign of terror in Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and other Northwestern states that has claimed thousands of lives including members of the armed forces, Nigerians from across the country have been calling on President Buhari to declare the bandits terrorists. The call comes from several quarters.

The likes of Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna state have pleaded with Buhari to declare bandits terrorists so that the military will be decisive and firmer in dealing with them. The Senate on Wednesday 29th September 2021 passed a resolution asking President Buhari to declare the bandits as terrorists through a Proscription Order, pursuant to section 2 of the Terrorism Prevention Act, 2011 (As Amended). The Senate asked the president to wage a total war against the criminals, including bombing all their locations, to eliminate them, while also declaring all known leadership of the bandits wanted and track them wherever they are for arrest and prosecution.

Barely 24 hours after the Senate asked President Buhari to declare bandits terrorists, the House of Representatives also urged the President to do same, to underline the determination of the apex government to combat the wave of criminality and murders perpetuated by bandits all over the country.

A similar call was also made by all the 36 Speakers of State Houses of Assembly at the end of their conference last month (October) in Katsina state while asking the president to declare bandits enemies of the state.

They killed Muslim worshipers in their mosques in Niger and Katsina state; they killed Christians in their Churches in Kaduna state;if the Government doesn’t want to declare them terrorists,it should declare them federal civil servants,” the outspoken politician wrote on his verified Twitter handle on Monday.

Politics / Southwest APC politicians’ Reject Oodua Republic, Insist On One Nigeria by Leybari: 6:40am On Oct 26, 2021
Struggle For New Nation Legitimate – Gani Adams

Recently some Southwest leaders in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) met in Lagos and implored groups involved in agitations for self-determination to desist forthwith. Their position have, however, triggered several reactions form concerned Yoruba groups and individuals.

In the second of nine resolutions arrived at the meeting, convener, Chief Bisi Akande expressed strong opposition to separatist agitations. The leaders directed those indulging in such to desist forthwith while expressing their belief in the unity, stability and sustainability of Nigeria.

But there have been mixed feelings that the Southwest leaders failed to engage the separatists groups on how take the country out of its present security predicament, which is believed to have been aggravated by the menace of armed Fulani herdsmen, bandits, whose activities have been perceived as threat to the existence of other ethnic groups in the country, especially the southern region.

The Southwest APC leaders were vilified for not engaging the agitators to sample their opinions on how to address the inclination that Fulani ethnic group had been parading itself as being superior to other ethnic nationalities in the country. One of the grouses against the APC leaders is that those invited to the meeting, in the first instance, could not have represented the entire leaders in the ruling party, let alone the entire Yoruba race.

Secondly, observers also disagreed with resolution number two on the ground that the factors that triggered the agitations for secession across the country could not have been treated with party sentiment as the leaders, who assembled at the Lagos State House Marina, are perceived to have done last Sunday.

Aside from the resolution number two, which generated criticisms, other demands by the Southwest APC leaders seem to align with positions of the agitators, who insisted that as long as the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari remains repugnant to recommendations of the 2014 National Conference or restructuring of the present system, the option is for ethnic nationalities making up Nigeria to go their separate ways instead of the current situation where the Fulani reigns over others.

On another hand, there are insinuations that the meeting was deliberately conceived by Chief Akande and the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to boost the undeclared 2023 presidential ambition of the former governor of Lagos State.

It was gathered that it took those present at the meeting several hours to agree that the communiqué must be drafted in such a way it would not be misinterpreted as aiding the political ambition of a particular person. The Guardian was reliably informed that there was heated argument as to why some, who also played critical roles in the merger of APC and other credible Yoruba elders and members of the party, were exempted from the meeting. While there was an attempt to cover up the fact that Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Niyi Adebayo stood in for and delivered the apologies of Governors Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti) and Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), who were conspicuously absent from the meeting, the disposition of Adebayo himself to the meeting raised questions.

However, Prominent media practitioner, Chief Tola Adeniyi said the meeting and its proceeds must be ignored because it did not represent the interest of all members of Yoruba in their party not to talk of those that are not their members.”

He also said the Southwest APC leaders have no locus standi to speak for the intelligentsia of Yoruba on issue of secession. “Almost all those who gathered last week Sunday are in their 60 to 80 years and they are part of those who benefited from the skewed nature of this nation compared to the agitators who are mostly youths struggling for their future emancipation from the current lopsided 1999 Constitution.”

He warned that such directives may aggravate the polity and ginger the agitators more. Adeniyi therefore said it behooves the Southwest APC leaders to engage the agitators in whatever means to discuss the way forward.

Politics / Aminu Maisari Accuses FG Of Releasing Bandits, Boko Haram Members Through Courts by Leybari: 12:04am On Oct 14, 2021
The Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, has faulted the release of suspected bandits, rapists, and other criminals by the courts.

He said: “We are in an unusual time of serious security challenges and must therefore put heads together to address these unusual challenges.

“We have had incidents where suspected bandits, terrorists, armed robbers, and rapists were released on bail only for them to commit the same offence.

‘Such ugly incidents could have been averted if bail was not granted at all.

“The overriding objective of every legal system, he said, is to deliver justice which is the best pivot and pillar that upholds the very best of decency and the best guarantee for peace, prosperity, and good governance.

“The age-long adage that justice delayed is justice denied, has been a thing of concern to the government.

“Thus there is the need to address the speed of justice among all stakeholders in the justice sector.

Politics / Vatican Condemns Abduction Of It's Seminarians In Kaduna, Demands Their Release by Leybari: 11:25am On Oct 13, 2021
According to the statement, the diocesan Major seminary is domiciled within the St. Albert Institute where the seminarians receive academic formation. The Seminary houses the seminarians preparing for the Catholic priesthood and their formators.

Attack in the chapel
The statement notes that the attack took place on 11 October around 7:26pm in the chapel of the Seminary.

As at the time of the attack, 10 formators, including the Rectors of the Seminary and the Institute, 132 seminarians, 6 non-seminarians, 1 female non-academic staff member and one steward were on ground.

Six seminarians sustained various degrees of injuries during the attack and they were accompanied by a dispatch of soldiers to a hospital in Kafanchan where they were treated and discharged after being confirmed to be stable.

According to the seminary security agents and law enforcement personnel, a headcount conducted after Mass on Tuesday showed that three seminarians had been abducted. The kidnapped seminarians belong to the Apostles of Divine Charity and the Little Sons of the Eucharist congregations and are all in their fourth year of theology studies.

Local news sources report that a police official said that a combined team of police tactical and anti-kidnapping squads have launched a manhunt for the bandits, with the aim of bringing them to book and rescuing the kidnapped victims.

“May Our Lady of the Holy Rosary and St. Wilfred intercede for our abducted brothers and all other kidnapped persons,” the statement said.

Insecurity in northern Nigeria
Nigeria has been facing an ongoing challenge against insecurity. In the north of the country, Kaduna is one of the states most affected by banditry, with thousands of people killed or kidnapped by armed men despite the efforts of security agencies.

This latest attack comes in spite of recent more-stringent measures put in place by the governors of some states in the north of Nigeria. In Kaduna, a ban has been placed on movement by motorcycles which are the favored means of transportation of the bandits, and telecommunication services have been disrupted in efforts to hinder the activities of the bandits.
