hegelian: Now you're talking! But let's leave Tinubu and Atiku out of the discussion. We have done the comparison based on current realities and we know who is better- Reason I said PO looks good on paper. However, I've learnt that the best judge of future performance is historical performance. There's a high probability that someone who has done something in the past would replicate it, all other things being equal. Now back to my original question. What was life like for the Anambra people when PO was a Governor. We know it's impossible to please everyone, but were the majority people happy? Also, It shouldn't be difficult to mention one or two verifiable things (should be more though) the did to better people's lives. |

hegelian: A section of my post says "this is part of my own research". I thank you for your suggestion but I've enough online already. As you know, there are tons of false info and propaganda online these days. Same strategy the "Sai Babsla" menace thrived on in 2015. So, it's a combination of online plus direct enquiries of first hand info and common sense. Who better to ask than the people who lived, worked and experienced his administration as a Governor. 1 Like 1 Share |
Politics / Anambra People, Please Help Make Sense Of This 2023 Election by Lindner: 2:45pm On Oct 07, 2022 |
A friend and I are planning to come home for holiday towards the election period. We both have valid voters card. Note: We are both 100% politically neutral. We also don't give a **** about religion, ethnicity e.t.c We just don't want a repeat of the "Sai Baba" hype of 2015 that brought us all to this very point as a country. Supporting the Sai Baba movement has haunted me ever since. My eye just clear from the very first month Buhari became President. It's been a disaster!!! Unfortunately, alot of people can't run away from the country like we did. So the race is looking more like it's going to be between Peter Obi and Asiwaju and the media hype is deafening. I know all about Asiwaju's achievement in Lagos since I lived and worked in Lagos for almost a decade and I also know much about his not-so-good record. On the other hand, I don't know much about Peter Obi other than he was once a Governor. Never been to Anambra before but he looks like a good alternative. In the spirit of not repeating the "Sai Baba" error by supporting either Asiwaju or PO without asking intelligent questions, please (People of Anambra) help itemize or summarize his success stories as a Governor as well as his bad reputation. Only Anambra people or if you know the history of Anambr very well abeg. PS: PO's supporters around here don't know either but are afraid to ask or too lazy to research. This is part of my own research. They said his achievement is that he paid salaries and pensions on time. |

Eggovic: You're disappointed that I'm neutral or that I'm not rooting for the same candidate as you? There are millions like me who are undecided and there's absolutely nothing wrong about that. Heck, there's nothing wrong if we both support different candidates. It doesn't make either of us less patriotic than the other. It's all just points of view. |

Mystery2020: Bro sorry about all these. But truthfully, you have a temperament that is not suited for the type of environment you found yourself. I did this for 7 years plus and I can tell you it's the same at the branch level everywhere especially when you're in sales. You seem to be an introvert that takes minor things to heart. Don't let me get you started with the kind of insults I've received at MPRs. I've seen grown up married men being asked their age while presenting on stage in front of the whole division. You just seem to get offended easily by people and you alienated everyone. Truth be told, all of them cannot be bad people. To survive in sales, you need your team. We had a Managenent Trainee like you. All 75 staff in the department hated him. I was his only friend but even me was just tolerating him. In the bank, its not about you, it's the about the job 8 Likes |

Epurogonogono: Thought I should correct this. My post specifically stated my discomfort in being in the same bucket with Igbos and their sympathizers who didn't wish Nigeria well but suddenly love the Country so much. It's definitely not for the love of the country. I went ahead to state there may be ulterior motives whether PO is aware or not. If I had proofs that boko haram members are promoting a particular candidate, I would say the same of that candidate. Perhaps because boko haram members are not as active on social media as Igbos. In the case of Igbos, we know their frontliners and we know who they're promoting. You wouldn't need to work too hard on facebook and Twitter to find this out . I didn't make any comments because of PO's ethnicity or religion. It's unfortunate that we've reduced every discussion to ethnicity and religion. Every conversion quickly degenerates into ethno-religious clashes. Just my opinion. 1 Like |

Truthfully, your candidate looks good on paper but if only you could discuss with civility like others have done. Makes me feel if he does become president and he fails to perform, you and your likes will enter overdrive mode with this same model if anyone dares to speak up. Don't you think you and your likes are doing more damage than good to his candidacy? 4 Likes |

kingthreat: I believe Nigeria has many people who can turn things around or at least start the process. The problem is with the pool from which we are selecting our leaders. It's the same people. Think about it, each of the candidates have at one time or the other shared political parties with one another. 1 Like 1 Share |

Moh247: Please just ignore them. I delberatley didn't respond to their insults directly. Seeing people objectively canvassing for their candidates really is a thing a joy. There are many like me who are torn between choices and may see some eye opening points and decide to vote for whom ever. It's our right to have varying views and exercise it. It beats me that some are bitter and toxic towards others just because they have an opinion other than their. Heck, they are toxic towards a neutral person. We are all frustrated about the situation of Nigeria but there's nothing that guarantees that one candidate will perform when he becomes the president. We just don't know that. If I like, i vote for a lizard on the ballot box, it's my constitutional right. Vote for yours and let the best win. If they're angry that I'm voting a lizard, make me see reasons like others have been doing on this thread, don't insult. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Looking at the three most popular candidates in the forthcoming election, I can say I've never been more confused. Was discussing with some of my guys and I won't kid myself, it's a decision for the least evil choice among the three. Sorry to say, if these are the best Nigeria has to offer again (as always), we're still in deep shit. ATIKU He's been an active participant in the shit we find ourselves as a country today. When that name is mentioned, what I hear is corruption and the continuation of institutionalized corruption and bad governance. He was once a VP, so he has no point to proof. He created part of the problem we're in. BAT Too many baggages. The fact that allegations cannot be proven does not mean they are false. It may just mean the perpetrator is to smart to cover his tracks. Plus, this man should just be resting and taking care of his health. Looks too frail. The complexity of our problems require agility. I just don't see how BAT can give even 50% of himself to the job consistently over 4 or 8 years. And I keep hearing about how he looted Lagos state dry. PO Looks good on paper but I can't just see any evidence of historical performance except vague statistics. They said he transformed Anambra. If today's Anambra is the transformed version and the standard for performance, all hope may be lost. And again, I'm weary of the 2015 rhetorics of "never-do-wrong, ultimate solution to all our problems" that made Buhari president. I'm also not just comfortable rooting for the same candidate as Igbos, their sympathizers and people who didn't wish Nigeria well but all of a sudden are interested in the country. Seem to me there's an ulterior motive (whether PO is aware ot not). I just don't want to help them gain power by contributing my vote- whatever the motive. Here is my dilemma and some of the real issues to be discussed when campaigning for your candidates instead of the ethno-religious nonsense that is plaguing us as a nation. The standard is so low to the point that our expectations are pathetic. Our best candidates are just a bunch of people from the same stock. 15 Likes 2 Shares |

Family / The Least Likely To Succeed In Life. by Lindner: 7:34am On Jun 03, 2022 |
Long post !!! It's 2:30am and strangely, an experience I had with a childhood friend many years back is keeping me awake. I feel writing about it would help others. We were kids in the same neighbourhood. Deji (Not real name) was a love child from an unwanted teenage pregnancy. As with most similar cases, he ended up with the grandma. He hawked all manner of things from morning till evening everyday. Constantly abused and assaulted, on daily basis by uncles, aunts and even grandma. It wasn't uncommon to see fresh wounds on his body every new day. Deji wasn't enrolled in school, couldn't read nor write, wore no shoes (As far as I could recall), sometimes wore half torn clothes. The whereabouts of his parents were unknown. His fate in life seemed to have been sealed from birth. The only source of joy for Deji was football. He would join the rest of the kids to play football when his guardians were not at home, switching between monitoring his grandma's petty trade and playing. We all wanted to be footballers. Some adults in the neighbourhood had gone on to be professional footballers, even internationally. One of them played for Lazio. The twist is that Deji sucked at football. To say he was poor at football was an understatement, he was horrible. It seemed hawking was his life mission, perhaps he would have gone on to become a great salesman. But he was terrible at hawking too. He rarely sold anything and he lost money frequently. He seem doomed in life. In retrospect, if I was asked who would be the least likely to succeed in life among my childhood friends, he would be the undisputed number one. I'm sure our other childhood friends would have a similar sentiment. OUR ENCOUNTER Fast forward over a decade later. I was a 300L student in one of the Universities. One afternoon, a classmate of mine told me someone asked after me but they gave him my hostel and room number. "Okay" Got to the hostel that evening and I was given the same message. "Someone asked after you". They also didn't get his name. The next day, in class, I was standing in front of a guy, smiling at me sheepishly. He donned a black suit, nice tie, sharp hair cut and over 6ft tall. He didn't look like a student so I was woondering who he was. He mentioned my name and told me he heard I was studying at this department. He said he knew that course is what I would study because I've always loved doing stuffs like that from childhood. "Who the hell is this talking about my childhood". I was not going to be fully prepared for the response I got. He introduced himself as Deji my childhood friend and I immediately saw the resemblance. His childhood ordeal in my memory and the image standing in front of me was a "miracle". He spoke both Yoruba and impeccable English. He was in my University to represent the Univeristy of Ibadan in some inter-school academic competion of some sort. That news gave me goose bumps. How did he get into UI talkless of representing UI? When my mum and my elder sister met him, without even hearing his story, they started shedding years. I wouldn't get into the details of the unimaginable things he told me pe passed through to where he was. We parted and I would later hear from him about 5 years later. I was job hunting at the time. He was already immensely successful with his career and living with his son and wife. THE MORALE The morale of this long post is that life could impose unfair disadvantages on us sometimes, but it's never an excuse. For one, I think being a Nigerian is an unfair disadvantage. I've seen the other side and compared it. IT IS RELATIVELY MORE DIFFICULT TO SUCCEED IN NIGERIA WITH ANYTHING(perhaps with the exception of fraud). This factor, coupled with some of our individual circumstances put us in a position of comparative disadvantage, sometimes. For example, I was born the same year as Mark Zuckerberg. He founded Facebook at a time when I had never had the opportunity to even operate a computer. He had access to a computer relatively early in life. Today, I'm a successful Software Engineer in my own right, but the journey could have been easier and faster. Seemed an unfair and unbalanced comparison, but it is what it is. Wherever position of disadvantage or limitation life has imposed on you, may you find the courage to crawl your way out today and be world class at whatever you choose to do in life and I pray you find true success. Cheers. 20 Likes 5 Shares |
Jobs/Vacancies / Re: What Should One Consider When Taking Up A Remote Job? by Lindner: 1:24pm On Apr 18, 2022 |
1. Do your due diligence when applying for remote work. I receive an average of 2 fraudulent emails per week from unintelligent fraudsters. The email is my dedicated application email. They probably got it from past applications I submitted or othe related means. 2. Any opportunity that involves paying money before employment is mostly likely fake no matter how polished the process looks. 3. Don't embark on unnecessary take-home (coding assignment). What you'll realise is that some freelancers in India are delivering your coding interview (assignment) to their clients. They never wanted to employ you in the first place. They have a freelance contract they can't do or don't have time to do (either the full task or part of the contract). They just simply open a job advert and give it applicants to complete. After submission, you either never receive any feedback or they inform you that your application was unsuccessful. You need experience and wisdom to filter through this. 4. Remote job requires alot of discipline. As I'm typing now, I have a heap load of tasks to complete for the two companies I work with but I'm not motivated to start even though it's Monday. Whatever you do, never give up. 25 Likes 2 Shares |

People who made head way, if they had resigned and quitted on themselves, would they have made it? Xinjin: Yeah. Without actual project evidence, everyone can claim they have 10 years experience freelancing. I remembered one of my interviews, when the interviewer shared his screen with me, he actually had one of my projects opened in his browser tab. He got it from github, followed the README, downloaded the dependencies and ran the application locally. I was shocked when I saw it how far these guys go. He told me to explain some parts of my code and why I used that particular approach. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Eggovic: Unfortunately, going by the feedbacks on this thread, a lot of people don't give a damn about it. Most of the applications i sent out without getting a response from recruiters was when I had scanty github contributions. Thank God for mentors, it changed dramatically. I didn't know there was something called job application package specific to software development roles. 1. Completed github profile with solid contributions (Open source projects inclusive). With links to your email, portfolio, linkedin e.t.c) 2. Professional linkedin profile. Also tailored and well crafted for software development. 3. Resume (Tailored for software development roles). 4. Cover letter (Needless to say it should be tailored to a particular role). 5. I even built a solid Angelist profile. 6. Stackoverflow profile. "Miraculously", these changed the game for me and saved me from blindly applying to jobs without getting any response. Since then, I've worked at multiple projects and orgs (only US orgs). Plus my experience, now I get an average of four unsolicited invitatitions from head hunters per month. The reason for this shalaye is that technical knowledge is not enough. Sadly. 15 Likes 9 Shares |

Prinss: How you even call git a trend baffles me. This is not about me, it is just what it is whether you like it or not. Please tell me again, how would you pick out 20 applicants out of 1000 (without work experience) for an interview? You'll interview all 1000? Or you'll send all 1000 a DSA to complete(as has been mentioned here) and review each? And I'm not a recruiter. I'm just wondering, what is the problem people have with committing their codes? You have no experience, how else do you show someone who doesn't know you and probably thousands of miles away what you can do? Word of mouth? Plus, almost every team uses git in their everyday activity. This is the tool that you'll most likely be using IF you get hired. Can you even use it? Git and Github is like the most basic tool.... I dont know how else I can emphasize this especially for someone without experience. You have no portfolio and then you have phobia of committing your work so that people can just go there and check you out and reach out to you. I'm curious what these people send in their job applications. Just resume? We focus too much on the technical aspect of our industry. The professional part is extremely important as well. Before I learned anything, I learned git first and best practises. Thanks to the advice from mentors ahead of me. So what is the issue here? No one is saying you should know everything about git. Two commands: "git add" and "git commit" intermittently as you code. I think people should begin to focus more on being professionally attractive as we are acquiring this so called knowledge. For emphasis, save yourself the time. NOBODY KNOWS WHAT YOU CAN DO IF YOU DON'T SHOW THEM. NOBODY WILL FIND YOU IF YOU DON'T MAKE YOURSELF "FINDABLE". From the day you start writing "Hello World", create a github account and commit everything. 10 Likes 2 Shares |

Grandlord: Does big tech companies even interview an applicant with zero experience? Even the start-ups, how do they go about inviting 20 people out of 1000 applications? What are the criteria? DSA is important but if you have nothing to show other than "Software Developer" in front of your name in today's world, without referral through your network, you're just trying to cut a tree with a razor blade. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Grandlord: There are 2 developers: Developer A: Data structures and algorithm guru. Has no evidence of real life projects or any contribution to any project. Developer B: Has a very rich portfolio of complex projects with evidence by his git commits. You can see his coding style. You can see logic and good use of data structures and algorithms in his code base. You know where he is in terms of experience. The truth is before you're even invited for that Data structures technical interview, there must hav been some kind of screening process (except you applied through refferal). Most often, such interviews are to further screen out applicants. How do I know you can code if I've not seen anything you've done in the past and you have never worked as a developer before. Worse, I don't know you or anything about you except that you're calling yourself a softwarr developer in your application. The easiest way to reduce doubts about your inexperience is to show what you've done. How? Portfolio of projects. Where? Github. 3 Likes 2 Shares |
