No problem. Just keep your business out of Lagos. Lagos has a strong and growing regulatory framework. In most other parts of Nigeria, you can get away with hustler mindset by greasing a few palms. Get into trouble in lagos (eg collapsed building) and you will be on national TV in handcuffs
Then you will know hustle as you call it, get level
Ciao ah ah! No be lagos again weh my goods dey pass steady with improper import duties? I have a lot of your common wealth in my possession and I am waiting the day you, sanwo Olu,FG...will HOLD.me accountable for it. Every system can be bypassed, depends on the player. You think she'll does not set aside resources? You do not realise airlines pay insurance? You think Boeing does not have insurance for their current mess?
Don't worry, the day you have a major incident in whichever business you run, regulators will ask you these questions. If you are really unlucky, your business will go belly up paying fines. I witnessed a death on a site 5 years ago. The company paid regulators 400 million in fines.
Then you will know it is not by hustle
Some failed bank chiefs went to prison in the abacha years. They literally lost every last thing I learnt something from you today. I will always remove money for disasters from WORKING CAPITAL to cater for probabilities Wow you will make the best CEO of any company. Kudos champ I am still trying to figure out the correlation between insurance and setting aside money for disasters. Isn't insurance meant to totally eradicate the latter? in actual sense , CAPITAL YES. it is only lazy regulation that is protecting a lot of business owners from serious liability.
why do you think you keep hearing of gas plants catching fire? because the owners cut all corners when building them. why are buildings collapsing? same reason.
why does your vehicle come with brakes, air bag, etc? but your danfo driver, with a mentality very close to that of the hustlers, discards every safety measure in the vehicle. hustle is important; the lies of the passengers are not.
another example - everyday, there are stories of people dying in hotel swimming pools. you know who is liable? the hotel. but because nigerians like to 'leave it to God'
any serious business has a risk management department that analyses the risks in their operations. the same thing applies on any scale. what are the things that can happen, and am i willing to take the responsibility if they do? what can i do to mitigate the risk?
people just chook head into anything over here. No let me give you a clear example of what your model means. It's like saying shell should set asides extra resources for oil spillage clean ups. The airlines that paid off people that died in their planes, did they have to or want to? Please whenever you are ready to go into business, apply your model and I will like to see you succeed in it. you know most 'hustlers' get fake papers. thats why their mo when in any accident is to run away.
you want to go into trucking business, it is more than just a truck
it is a roadworthy truck that will not have brakes fail an run into somebody's compund business petrol station or nepa pole it is a truck with a properly rated chassis that will not fall over in a pothole it is s a mature, proven driver with a proven guarantor/surety
90% of truck owners do not have these, so we have deaths and destruction everywhere.
i worked in the downstream industry and we had these issues all the time. some joker in his truck ran into our station, obliterating our sign. to pay for the sign [market value NGN 900,000] becomes long story. begging, i will pay in installment, attempts to run away, attempts to settle the police so the matter will be closed.
why is it happening? because the person running the business does not have the capacity to run it.
when a dangote truck broke the bridge at Ijesha, dangote paid for it when the joker whose truck caught fire in festac link bridge destroyed it, teh government paid for it when we start imprisoning people who cannot pay, people will respect themselves and face what they can do.
i have similarly lost count of the number of trucks that have no insurance. they only have fake papers.
why do you think we have CBN, Amcon and NDIC? to protect depositors from predatory cowboys.
So in essence you are saying starting a business requires making resources available for hazards as priority? Do you think airplanes that crash into people's buildings pay for the building? Even in your over valued western world, you know too well that when disasters happen,it is fully taken over by insurance, after investigations have been made and results exonerates the owner of any default. Now CBN regulates the financial markets and banking industries nationwide. AMCON is some kind of repo that confiscates assets of loan defaulters after handing over the same liquidity the defaulter collected from a commercial bank, with sole purpose of protecting depositors interest. NDIC Depositor insurance(I call them brokers) How?they monitor step by step banking activities to know who is going under,negotiates/brokers transfer of business to other investors so as to protect depositor interest as well. Now does NDIC uses liquidity to protect depositors? Not really! You also lied about Dangote repairing structures destroyed by it's trucks Insurance did,not DG! No business have everything it takes to do that business. Let's not argue for the sake of arguing Please, let's be objective here. |

Yes he definitely has a different personality. If anything I’m more traditional than him seeing as I love my kitchen and some of those supposedly African wifely duties.
But what matters is choice. I believe the woman has a choice to decide if that’s what she wants or not. yes,I love that you love your kitchen and I think it is one of the natural instincts of every woman. If I go home to visit parents today,my mom will first bring food whereas my dad will ask about business or hustle. Let men be men and women be women. It is called regulation. That is why bank capitulation is 25 billion.that is why there is an amcon. Once upon a time a big boy like you could wake up to hear that your savings had all disappeared in a bank collapse. That's why there is regulation, so that not every joker can enter into a business.
Once upon a time bank capitalisation in Nigeria was 2 billion, and international drug barons were looking at Nigeria as a potential haven for money laundering.
You do not have the capital base or the resources, then you partner or you find another business. If I had decided to do full oyibo and take legal action against the fellow who bashed my car, that would have been a lifetime of penury for him. end of story. 25 billion as capitalisation is just minimum requirement,as would someone that wants to go into trucking need own a truck. theButterfly: I'm aware of how the system works here. Your argument about the Nigerian government doesn't even make sense. Even if the government doesn't provide garbage cans, common sense ought to tell people to not litter. Many Nigerian streets are a like a dumpsite and eyesore b|c of people throwing garbage anywhere. No maintainance culture in that country.
I can walk or drive miles here in Canada w|o seeing a garbage can to throw something in but that doesn't mean I'll now throw it anywhere I see fit. Common sense says I find a garbage bin to throw it in b|c this is its appropriate place. My street sef has no garbage bins yet it is spotless b|c people have sense enough not to litter and are aware that littering is a $500 fine. I'm not calling people's advertisements in Family garbage but merely using this analogy to emphasize things ought to be placed where they belong for the sake of order.
Another lost clown. Please,do you or do you not have proper structure where one can be traced and made to pay that fine? Now how do you make one pay such in Lagos? |

if you cannot afford it, then you should not be in the business. why do you think dangote was chasing graduates as employees for driving trucks? because he was liable for the damage or injuries caused by his trucks. most of your hustlers resort to begging after they have killed someone, or destroyed someones property. that tells you right there and then they should not be in the business, because they cannot bear the risks. i hope LASG follows through on the otedola bridge disaster; that was caused by your hustlers adjusting a truck bed rated 10 tons to 30 tons.
perhaps you cannot read or comprehend - i live in festac. i see the fallout of the madness of hustlers every day.
you also refuse to understand that the masses bear the cost of your hustlers every single day - with their lives. even you defending them - can be a victim. those trailers that have brakes or unsecured loads do not ask if na uk , fellow hustler or struggling nigerian before falling on them
stop the FUD. i am a very patient person, and i can sometimes scout four places before i buy something. nine times out of ten, the high prices are from your hustlers, accompanied by looong stories. the only thing most of you are trafficking in is ignorance of your customers.
i just gave one example of a hisense television. direct experience. most high prices are because of the GREED of your saluted hustlers. i check jiji, i check jumia etal - i see a device i want to buy at over 50k. i pay someone to buy same device on amazon and ship it down - 30k.
na your same fellow hustlers dey sell accidented cars as clean, not so/. i worked in apapa, and i saw them all the time on my commute home. dead cars. and your guys will polish them and sell them as first body, not so? that was how one of them sold a flood damaged benz GL as brand new to an oga in my office some years ago. everything na hustle. no one is in any business who has got enough money for it to run it perfectly. Even adenuga said "only God knows what would have happened if conoil drilling didn't strike oil that day". I trust you enough to be able to put 2 and 2 together to decipher what that means. Nigeria operates an open market where if price or quality for A isn't good for you, simply go to the next dealership! What I meant by hyper inflation isn't same as greed. If it's a government policy to ensure proper insurance and taxing, then pricing will increase in every lot.so this isn't a greed problem but that of policy. Know that Mr. You(someone I like to think is smart) should know no one can afford to be greedy in an open market, except of course the buyer na ide. And ide can be defrauded in the US too. |

it was the owner of the truck. if you do not have the resources to run a business, then you should not be in it.
a person who cannot release money to repair a damaged vehicle will not have money to maintain his truck. he will not have money for tires, to fix brakes, to fix lights. it is your hustlers who everyone has to give gap on the bridge because we can see their trucks sliding down.
it was one of your hustlers whose truck caught fire on festac link bridge two years ago. the bridge was out of commission for over six months. over 15 cars were destroyed in the fire. incidentally, that fire also destroyed the adjacent parking lot of another hustler - over five unsold cars were destroyed. as a hustler matter, i'm sure the sellers cars were not insured. that guy was probably like you, defending everything in the name of hustle. well he got burnt.
it is the same reason LASG started putting stringent laws against fire works, because a few years back one of your hard working co hustlers had his warehouse full of fire works for christmas catch fire.
Hmmm! So let's say I am sanwo olu or Buhari perhaps and I am touched enough by this your model to put everything in perspective,of course like it's done in the UK where you are from. And I apply this model in one of the poorest countries in the world where people barely feed, what do you think will happen? I don't know what car you drive but would you insure a 010 Camry for 1 million naira? Would you pay 500k for trucking a container from Apapa to oshodi? Would you buy tires for your vehicle at 200k each? Even retail too.would you pay 50% more of what you spend monthly on groceries? And note that all these will be born by you making the same kind of money you make now in this current economic phase we are in. Because if these people have to do things by your standards, then the masses must bear the cost! If not for all these cuts that HUSTLERS do,you would have been spending like an American in a Nigerian economy, making the Nigerian kind of money. I am sure you will be the first to carry placard to Abuja in the name of protest Development is in stages, even the US took centuries to make it what it is today! 1 Like |

i wonder if you will share this same sentiment if they start doing clearing and forwarding right in front of your mansion it is this very attitude that makes nigeria so diificult
in my old close, some one started dealing cars in the close, next thing we had an influx of vehicle vandalisation. in the same vein, in a domestic neighbpourhood, some hustler started a welding business. this led to further overloading of an already overloaded community switch board, fluctuating voltages, and damage to appliances of different people in the neighbour hood.
but hey, as long as you're making an honest buck in a hard country, it doesn't matter if your inconveniencing anyone right, because the needs of you supersede the needs of the many
or when someone [another honest working hustler] tried to bring a hotel into the close. fortunately everyone kicked against it. there are domestic locales where people did not put up a fight, and i feel for them. party and loud music till 1 am, people turning everywhere to public toilet. randy people fking in cars in the open. wonderful place to bring up kids in. i remember one neighbor with daughter already showing signs of waywardness freaking out completely over the idea of a hotel [what is hotel in naija other than short time joint] but it doesn't matter, because the only important thing is making money. it does not matter how much you inconvenience other as long as you are making your money. that is all that matters
six or seven years ago, a trailer rear ended me in traffic. demolished the back of my car. the standard is to sieze teh car until you are paid, but there was no way i could start parking a trailer in the close [ i have respect for other people].So i opted for taking the original papers of the car. that was how i followed the owner of the truck into the slums of ebute metta. when we got to his flat, it was a mess. his kids were just coming in from school, and i was looking like some fat tax collector. i took one look at the whole mess and took the measly 15k that he said was all he had [ of course you hustlers may begin laughing over how i fell for the format]. the question i came back with was - why is this fool, who does not have two nickels to rub together in this business. the truck was a dead vehicle. this is how nigerians are killed everyday, by hustlers who do not have the resources to do the business they are doing.
it is the same thing with most of these spammers. more greed than common sense. banking on the ignorance of the suckers who do click on their ads. If you live in Nigeria, better start thinking like Nigerians. And I wonder how you had to believe someone who drives a truck will have just 15k to spare for repairs. Till we understand that naija isn't the west, then I believe everyone will settle accordingly. |

These examples you give are quite funny. It is the responsibility of the government to provide an enabling environment for people to do business.
In a society where everyone is their own local government, you generate your own light, water, even road and fence(security) what do you expect.
I am yet to see a business owner on this thread supporting your idea , I am sure because you are a salary earner it looks to you like everything is okay.
The Nigerian mode of living is the survival mode, the same mode of living animals in the jungle survive by, the average man on the street is not hustling to buy a car or build a house, they are hustling to feed not even themselves but their children.
