Education / We Are Still Facing Discrimination Despite Buhari’s Order NOUN Graduates Cry Out by Lovechisom55: 3:44pm On Jun 08, 2019
Law Graduates of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) say they are yet to know their fate of gaining admission into the Nigerian Law School in spite the Presidential assent to NOUN Amendment Act.

Mr Carl Umegboro, Chairman of the Law Graduates Forum, NOUN, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Dec. 7, 2018 assented to the NOUN Amendment Act, which changed its standing from ‘Correspondence’ to ‘Full-time’ and was gazetted afterwards.

The amendment allows the University to operate as all other universities with same power, functions and administrative structures.

The amendment was a remedy to admission crisis which hindered law graduates of the institution from admission into the Nigerian Law School as well as participation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme since 2013.

Umegboro said nothing significant had taken place after the Presidential assent and gazette, adding that the delay had brought untold hardship to the graduates.

“There is no logical reason to continue withholding admission quota against NOUN law graduates after the celebrated assent of the NOUN Amendment Act by President Buhari, which the Council of Legal Education pointed to the Senate Committee on Public Petitions as the irregularity.

“I have unalloyed confidence that Mr President, as a noble, distinguished and dependable leader will not allow injustice, bullying and discrimination on innocent citizens to triumph.

“These citizens spent time and resources to enroll in a programme duly accredited by the National Universities Commission.

“I appeal to President Buhari, pursuant to national security, to urgently convene a stakeholders meeting.

“We, therefore, appeal to the authorities to resolve the differences without further delay”.

A reliable source from the Nigeria Law School told NAN that: “We are working on it and trying hard to resolve the issue. It was a problem that has long lingered so we need time to get things done right.”

Politics / Mutiu Okunola Defects To APC by Lovechisom55: 3:29pm On Jun 08, 2019
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday said it has received Mutiu Okunola, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), into its fold.

Abiodun Salami, state APC Assistant Publicity Secretary made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

NAN reports that Okunola, a former Organising Secretary of the PDP in the state, was the party’s candidate for Ikeja Federal Constituency in the last elections .

He lost to the candidate of the APC, Mr. James Faleke, who is the federal lawmaker representing the area.

Salami said the former PDP official joined APC at a very brief ceremony at the party secretariat.

”He has joined the winning party, the APC; he joined at a very brief ceremony at the party secretariat a few days ago.

“Everything was done at the office of the chairman, Alhaji Tunde Balogun, in the presence of a few party officials .

“We welcome him to APC. He has made the right decision”, Salami said.

He said the party would continue to welcome new members into its fold as it was for all Lagosians and for the good of the people.

Confirming his defection to NAN,Okunola said he left the PDP because of its internal crisis, and what he called poor organisation in the opposition party.

The former PDP official said he joined the APC because he believed it was better organised, and that it was the people’s party.

“It is true. I have left the PDP to join the APC. I left because I could no longer stay in a party that is not organised and can not protect the interests of members.

“I believe APC is better organised to serve the interests of all Lagosians,” he said .

The former Lagos PDP Organising Secretary vowed to do his best to add value to his new party.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State chapter of the PDP has urged Okunola to show appreciation to his former party for whatever political asset he might have become.

Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Mr Taofik Gani, while confirming his (Okunola’s) exit from PDP, urged him to show decorum and not speak ill of the party that made him.

He said the former PDP official had made his decision and that there was nothing anybody could do about it.

NAN reports that of late, there had been defections of PDP members in Lagos, to the ruling APC following its discouraging outing at last governorship and house of assembly elections in the state.

Mr. Moyosore Ogunlewe, son of a former Minister of Works ,Sen. Adeseye Ogunlewe, who contested as PDP candidate for the Kosofe 1, House of Assembly seat in the last election recently defected to APC.

Also, Mr. Dipo Olorunrinu, the lone PDP lawmaker who lost his re-election bid for Amuwo-Odofin 1 state constituency seat, has also joined the APC.

Politics / Pastors, Imams To Get Approval Before Preaching In Kaduna by Lovechisom55: 9:19am On Jun 08, 2019
The Kaduna State House of Assembly on Friday passed the Religious Preaching Regulation bill into law.

The new Religious Preaching Regulation law substitutes similar law of 1984 in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Executive Bill, brought to the Assembly in 2016, was passed hours before the eighth Assembly was dissolved on Friday.

The bill had been with the assembly three years and had been opposed by Muslim and Christian bodies as well as individuals across the state.

The state government had in 2016 argued the bill was meant to regulate religious preaching in order to promote religious harmony and peaceful coexistence not to stipple religious freedom.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Alhaji Aminu Shagali, presided over the sitting during which the bill was passed after it was read clause by clause.

It provides for the establishment of an Interfaith Regulatory Council at the state level and committees at local government levels responsible for screening and issuing licence to preachers.

The councils will have two representatives each of Christian and Islamic bodies among other members.

According to the speaker,  the new law has mandated the council to hear and determine appeals to be brought before it arising from the decision of the local government interfaith committees.

The Council also has power to issue regulations considered necessary to guide the  local government interfaith committees in the performance of their functions as provided under the bill, if signed into law.

“The bill when signed into law, stipulates that in each of the 23 local Government areas of the state, a committee to be known as the Local Government Interfaith Committee has to be established.

“The Local Government Interfaith Committee shall consider and recommend to state Interfaith Regulation Council all applications for the grant of licence to religious preachers as well as screen and recommend preachers for the grant of license among other functions.
