Oby Ezekwesili also reacted to the police invitation for questioning at Abuja served to Timi Dakolo and his wife, Busola, by armed policemen on Saturday.



We reported earlier that Timi Dakolo raised an alarm over the 'invasion' of his house by armed men, and also shared a letter of invitation from the police. However Police Spokesman, Frank Mba countered the claim by stating that the letter served was not a warrant of arrest, but a polite investigative tool used in eliciting information voluntarily from parties to aid police investigations.

Oby Ezekwesili however, in her reaction to report of the served invitation notice, questioned its motive. According to the former Education Minister and BBOG convener, photos shared online showed that the officers did not deliver a “regular police invitation”. She also alleged that the statement released by the police was a damage control, as their officers overreached on a matter of serious public interest. Read her tweets below;

Amnesty International joined Nigerians in reacting to the alleged invasion of Timi Dakolo's house by armed policemen from Abuja, and according to them, it is a move to intimidate victims of sexual abuse.

The human rights agency raised an alarm over an alleged disturbing pattern, in which authorities respond to allegations of sexual abuse. It also recounted past incidents, in which victims of rape were reportedly subjected to arrest and intimidation by the Nigerian police.

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday met with the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, where issues of national interest were deliberated upon.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting held at the State House, Abuja, between the president and the two leaders of the National Assembly (NASS) came barely 24 hours after the assembly announced its plan to hold another security summit to tackle the nation’s security challenges.

Speaking to State House correspondents at the end of the closed door meeting, the President of the Senate revealed that the national assembly would collaborate and cooperate with the executive arm of government in addressing the nation’s security and socio-economic challenges.

“What we have discussed are those things that will ensure that the people of Nigeria are better protected, the economy of Nigeria performs better to the inclusion of everyone in the country, that governance generally is set to achieve the set targets of providing security and welfare for Nigerians.

“We are going to collaborate and cooperate with the executive arm of government, work together to ensure we find better approaches, improved paradigm to address appropriately the current situation,’’ he said.
According to him, Nigerians stand to benefit a lot form the existing cordial relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government.

On the expected screening of ministers and other nominees, Lawan said the legislators would collaborate more and ensure speedy confirmation of appointees to enhance good governance.

Gbajabiamila, who also fielded questions from the correspondents, said the crisis in the Edo State House of Assembly would soon be resolved, having received the report of the committee that investigated the matter.

According to him, the House of Representatives will do the needful and possibly invoke the relevant section of the constitution, by taking over the functions of the Edo State House of Assembly, where necessary.

“As you know, we set an ad hoc committee, they went to Edo State, the report was laid and considered today and the context of the report is very clear.

“I think what we did was to stick strictly by the rule or by the law that guides the assembly and us as lawmakers.

“So, one of the recommendations, which I believed was approved by the House, was for us to have a proper proclamation with date, venue and time, which was missing in the first proclamation.

“The Edo House of Assembly have about a week to come up with the proper election of the principal officers.

“If in a week nothing changes, perhaps the House and the National Assembly as a whole would look at invoking section 11 of the constitution,’’ he said.

The President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, has said that the absence of ministers will not affect the 2020 budget.

He said budgets were usually prepared by civil servants and not ministers per se.

Lawan spoke with State House Correspondents in Abuja after he held a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, was also at the meeting.

Lawan stated that so long as the budget was laid before the National Assembly by September, the legislature would do its own beat by passing it speedily.

The five-man Presidential Election Petition Tribunal in Abuja on Wednesday directed the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, and the commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Zamfara, to produce some documents requested by the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, by noon on Thursday.

The tribunal led by Justice Mohammed Garba gave the order after receiving reports by the petitioners that the INEC officials had refused to comply with the court’s subpoena served on them and the payment made for it.

The petitioners, who are challenging the outcome of the February 23, 2019 poll spoke through their lawyer, Chief Chris Uche (SAN).

“We have made concerted efforts and we stated in the letters we wrote to them that we have it on good authority that they were instructed not to release the documents,” Uche said.

‎Justice Garba delivered the tribunal’s ruling, after listening to the comments of lawyers representing the other respondents – INEC’s lawyer, Yunus Usman (SAN), Buhari’s lawyer President Muhammadu Buhari,  Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), and Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the counsel for the All Progressives Congress.

Ruling, Justice Garba said, “I have seen from the record of the court that the INEC Chairman and the Resident Electoral Commission, Zamfara State, were duly served with subpoena issued on July 9, 2019, to produce documents named therein.

“The INEC chairman and the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Zamfara and the legal team representing them are under binding obligation to ensure that the orders contained in the subpoena are obeyed.”

The court noted that the subpoena directed both INEC officials To produce the documents on July 15, 2015, but it might have been impossible to produce the documents that day.
Justice Garba added that it was clear that up till the Wednesday’s proceedings, the documents requested had yet to be produced.

He also held that since there was no specific directive for them to produce the documents at the Wednesday’s proceedings, “They are directed to produce the documents by noon on Thursday, July 18, 2019.”

A Nigerian man has addressed the issue of provocation in relationships, and also had an advice for women being beaten by their partners.
