Business / How Mark Zuckerberg Lost $3 Billion In A Single Day by mailjoelig: 2:34pm On Nov 04, 2016
Mark Zuckerberg had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.
The Facebook founder suffered a $3 billion loss in the value of his Facebook stock on Thursday, one of the largest single-day losses ever for an individual investor.
Facebook (FB, Tech30) shares plunged 5.5% after the chief financial officer warned investors that the company expects revenue growth from advertising to "come down meaningfully."

Zuckerberg holds 418 million shares of Facebook stock -- still good for about $50.2 billion.Bloomberg estimates Zuckerberg's total net worth at $52.2 billion, ranking him as the fifth-richest man in the world, just behind Warren Buffett. And despite Thursday's plunge, Facebook shares are up nearly 15% for the year, lifting Zuckerberg's net worth by $6.4 billion.

Business / NCC Denies Transferring Visafone License To MTN by mailjoelig: 5:47pm On Oct 12, 2016
The drama surrounding MTN and its purchase of Visafone continues with new twists and turns. The latest of these is that the Professor Dambatta, Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) saying that it did not approve transfer of Visafone licence to MTN, but rather what it approved was a transfer of 100% Visafone shares to MTN.
The telecommunications regulator said that in the midst of the controversy surrounding having a dominant network which would control the others, it would not further fuel such problems by transferring Visafone’s license to MTN.

Rather, what Visafone asked the NCC to approve was a transfer of shares from the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operator to the Global System of Mobile Communication (GSM) firm.

The NCC said it then approved the N47.5 billion transfer by virtue of Section 38 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 and this has resulted in about 568,000 customers of the CDMA operator being upgraded to the GSM network, according to Vanguard Newspapers.

The telecommunications sector has been grappling with controversies about having a dominant network that could assert minor monopoly on the market, with the legislative chamber even wading in. The revelation of the Visafone purchase had further sparked fears that MTN was gradually buying out other major players and could exert control over majority of the spectrum and the role of NCC in the matter.

Sports / Heavyweight World Champion Fury Tests Positive For Cocaine by mailjoelig: 7:51am On Oct 01, 2016
Heavyweight world boxing champion Tyson Fury has tested positive for cocaine, ESPN reported on Friday citing a leaked letter sent by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA).

Reuters was unable to immediately verify details of the report.

Representatives of Briton Fury, who last week pulled out of a rematch with Wladimir Klitschko for medical reasons, declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.

ESPN said it had obtained a copy of a letter sent by VADA president Dr. Margaret Goodman to representatives of Fury and Klitschko as well as the British Boxing Board of Control and the United States' Association of Boxing Commissions on Thursday.

"This letter is to advise you that the 'A' sample urine specimen number 4006253 collected from Tyson Fury on September 22, 2016 in Lancaster, England through his participation in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) program has been analyzed for anabolic agents, diuretics, beta-2 agonists, stimulants and drugs of abuse," it read.

"The results of the analysis are as follows: Adverse. Urine specimen contains benzoylecgonine.

"Mr. Fury has the right to promptly request analysis of the 'B' sample at his expense."

Benzoylecgonine is the main metabolite of cocaine.

VADA, which provides anti-doping programs for boxing and mixed martial arts, does not release results of tests publicly unless requested to do so by athletes.

The World Boxing Association (WBA) said in a statement it would consider Fury's case before making any decision.

"Regarding the VADA report, they sent a statement in which they inform that the result was positive. Now we are waiting to see if Fury's team will request the opening of the B sample test," Sky Sports quoted the WBA as saying.

Contacted late on Friday, noone was available at the British Boxing Board of Control or World Boxing Organization (WBO) to comment.

Earlier this year, Fury was charged with a doping offense by UK Anti-Doping after a urine sample from February 2015 - nine months before he beat Klitschko to win the WBA and WBO world titles - showed traces of the banned stimulant nandrolone.

At the time, Fury said he was innocent and is suing Britain's anti-doping and boxing authorities.

Business / Blackberry Announced It Will Stop Making Handsets by mailjoelig: 4:08pm On Sep 30, 2016
How could they do this? It feels so personal. I bought my first BlackBerry from Research In Motion in December 2004, the same week that I bought my company. While I was certainly not the earliest adopter (the company passed the 1m user mark that year), not many people in business yet had one.

For those of us who did, it changed our lives. No longer did I have to go into the office, or find an internet connection, to get my email. The hassle of having to dial up from my laptop in hotels, or trying to find an internet café, disappeared overnight. Less than a year later I bought a handset for everyone who worked with me.

I knew I was probably too attached to my BlackBerry by 2007, when my then seven-year-old son presented me with a customised ceramic creation, a plate on which he had drawn a picture of my device and the inscription “my other brother, BlackBerry”.

That was the year the iPhone was launched. I insisted on keeping my BlackBerry long after I had been persuaded to let the rest of the office migrate to iPhone, even though it meant having a server specifically for my software. I am nothing if not loyal. I finally caved in to Apple in 2014, but even then ran my iPhone alongside my BlackBerry for two more years.

For my generation of working women, the BlackBerry handset, as a technological breakthrough, was every bit as liberating as the introduction of the contraceptive pill had been to a previous generation. As it could email from everywhere, you could be out of the office and still work perfectly well, allowing you to combine motherhood with a career in a way that had not been possible before. Indeed, a friend at a large US company found her BlackBerry meant that she could work part-time for 14 years — and very few people ever noticed. Suddenly flexibility was for everyone. The “always on” approach had arrived.

Others did not welcome BlackBerrys into their lives with such enthusiasm. Its highly addictive nature, which led to the “CrackBerry” nickname, meant that people rarely put the handset down when they came home in the evening. One (male) friend of mine had his BlackBerry addiction cited in his divorce as number three on his ex-wife’s list of his “unreasonable behaviour”.

In a world where digital detox retreats are the new indulgence for the well-heeled, it is hard to remember a time before we were “always on”. But let us not forget that the BlackBerry started all that.

As one 50-year-old friend told me: “My heart was broken when my BlackBerry was taken away for me. It flashed a little red light when there was new mail. Bliss.” But that flashing red light drew us towards the device when perhaps we should have been doing something else. How does she feel now, on a iPhone? “It does at least mean that I now look for emails when I am ready, rather than jumping when I see it.”

BlackBerry is not dead. The software remains much loved by those for whom secure communication is vital. If Pippa Middleton had stored her photos on a BlackBerry, I hear the purists say, she would never have been hacked.

We should also salute the company’s chief executive, John Chen. It is brave to give up on something when so many people are emotional about it and that has been, historically, so successful. And it is probably the right thing. BlackBerry surprised on the upside in its latest quarterly results, something it had not done for a long time.

Even so, I wore black to my husband’s 60th birthday dinner. And I expect to be in mourning for some time to come.

Sports / Rashford, Iwobi And Iheanacho: Which Rising Star Is Making An Impact Dis Season by mailjoelig: 3:20pm On Sep 29, 2016
Three of the Premier League‘s major clubs are benefiting from the performances of young stars this season, with Marcus Rashford, Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho all catching the eye.
The season may only be in its infancy, but already this trio have gone a long way to establishing themselves in their respective club sides.

In an age of ludicrous transfer fees and an attitude of spending more money to fix issues, it's refreshing to see three youngsters rise through the ranks and have an immediate impact in the first-team.
All three players are excelling in the Premier League at the moment, and don't look out of place alongside their world-class and often grossly expensive teammates.

Although all three are attacking players, focused on creating and scoring goals, they have different strengths and weaknesses.
With that in mind, Squawka have run the rule over the trio's stats to compare and contrast their strong starts to the season.
Goal threat
image: http://www.squawka.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/RII-comparison-goals.jpg

First things first: how effective have they been in front of goal?
Here, as expected, the two Manchester-based players lead the way. Rashford and Iheanacho both play as a forward for their respective sides, and it shows in the stats as they best Iwobi - who's only attempted one shot in the league this season - on goals and shots taken.

Rashford has scored 12 goals in 25 matches for Manchester United since making his debut. Remarkably he's the club's top goalscorer in 2016, and as such goals are his main selling point. Since coming off the bench to score the dramatic late winner against Hull City on August 27th, he's gradually become more trusted by Jose Mourinho.
While Rashford, due mainly to his pace and the presence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has been deployed wide in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Iheanacho has generally played as a central attacker for Manchester City this season.

The Nigerian has found game-time harder to come by this term, but with a player of Sergio Aguero's consistency ahead of him, that's nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, his comparative lack of opportunity make his start perhaps more impressive - he's scored in his last two league appearances, suggesting his impact isn't reduced by the stop-start nature of his involvement.

Phones / Google Set To Realese Smart Phone That Would Compete With Iphone 7 by mailjoelig: 8:11pm On Sep 20, 2016
The line outside Apple's Soho store in New York City for the iPhone 7 is still remarkably long. (It is truly a puzzling site to walk by each day on the way to NYLON's offices.) Google, probably sick of my constant googling of "Why are people still lined outside of Apple?" has a solution coming. According to a mysterious website made by Google and a transfer of rumored knowledge, a new smartphone will debut October 4.

Google's latest Nexus-driven device is expected to be called Pixel. It's slated to be the best Android phone yet. There's obviously new swiping technology and fancy glass back panels. Whether it hisses, like Apple's latest, remains unknown. Like the iPhone, however, it'll reportedly set consumers back well over $600. A cryptic video promoting the device can be found below. It basically implies that your Google search bar is now a phone. It's a lovely metaphor, really, but will it allow a user to search incognito? Do we need J.K. Rowling to create some magic for a user to do so? After all, the iPhone doesn't have the capability to render a user invisible like an invisibility cloak yet. When will we know if Google has answered all our problems?
