Education / Re: Lagos launches Comprehensive Schools Programme by Mainblockent(f): 12:36pm On Mar 16, 2022
Mainblockent:
As part of its promise to make education a major pillar in the building of a greater Lagos State, the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has launched The Lagos State Comprehensive Schools Programme.

According to Folashade Adefisayo, the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, the programme is basically a response to the high number of students dropping out of the public secondary school system in the state: “We noticed a heavy attrition rate among our senior secondary school students.”, she explains, “Many were not resuming in SS1, after JS3, and even throughout Secondary Schools, there was a steady reduction in enrolment.”

Statistics show that for every 10 students enrolled in JS1, only 3 make it to SS3, with just 1 student eventually graduating. Many of the dropouts get into informal vocational training and street level hawking and trading-related activities, exposing them to social vices and crime. The programme, Adefisayo insists, offers such students an option: “Instead of going into low-level training, stay with us and we’ll give you first-class training in vocational skills in the safe, controlled environment school provides.”

Above and beyond addressing the school dropout situation in the state, the programme is a model that is designed to unlock the unique intellectual competency of each student and is suited to their intelligence profile and local context. “In reality, there are many levels of measuring intelligence and how people learn.”, Peter Bankole, Chairman of the overall planning committee for the programme, iterates, “We aim to make Lagos the state of choice when it comes to employability and support for students going through the programme.”

The programme itself employs a two-pronged approach of general academic and vocational education. The vocational training begins in earnest at the resumption of Senior Secondary School and runs through its three-year duration. It covers five broad subject categories in the pilot phase; Agriculture, Tech and Digital skills, Beauty and Events, Building and Construction, and Media and Entertainment. “The students will have access to hands-on training that incorporates technology.”, Ayopeju Njideaka, Chairman, Curriculum Sub-Committee for Lagos Comprehensive Schools reveals, “In addition to learning skills in agriculture, fashion designing, software development, film-making and others, they will be taught financial literacy, entrepreneurship, communication, marketing and sales, and digital literacy, to enhance their employability and economic independence.”

What sets the programme apart from the already-existing technical colleges in the state is the ease of access offered to students. Instead of the rigors of trying to enrol in colleges in relatively distant locations as Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe, (acronymed as IBILE), “The programme offers the chance to remain within the formal academic structure and obtain training similar to that in the technical colleges.”, says Abayomi Abolaji, Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Ministry of Education.
“The pilot phase has commenced in 12 schools across Lagos' 6 Education Districts (2 schools per district). District 1; Alimosho Senior High School in Alimosho and Dairy Farm Secondary School in Agege. District 2; Majidun Senior High School in Ikorodu and Angus Memorial College, Igbobi. District 3; Ogunmodede Senior College in, Epe and Wahab Folawiyo Senior High School, Ikoyi. District 4; Lagos City Senior College, Sabo, Yaba and Government College Eric Moore, Surulere. District 5; Bola Ige Millenium Senior Secondary School in Ajeromi-Ifelodun and Ajara Comprehensive High School in Badagry. For the last district (6), we have Birch Freeman High School Mushin and Ijeshatedo Grammar School, Okota/Isolo. We hope to expand to 50 by September, 2022, with the ultimate goal of establishing the programme in every public secondary school in the state.” Abolaji concluded.

Regarding the sustainability of the programme, Adefisayo says legal documentation is ongoing but believes the critical involvement of the private sector alongside communities and other relevant parties, will foster accountability, and the durability of the Lagos State Comprehensive Schools Programme.

“It is education that provides credible, multiple pathways to life skills; to give the student a job for life, a career for life and a living for life.”

Nairaland / General / Kike Fajemirokun-women In Industry:upskilling For A Transitional Energy Industry by Mainblockent(f): 9:31am On Mar 04, 2022
In 2014, 12 women received a scholarship for oil and gas-related undergraduate courses in Norway, courtesy of the Petroleum Trust Development Fund – the first time the scheme was expanded to offer school-leavers a pipeline into the industry. Four times as many men received the same scholarship. By 2021, the scheme offered MSc scholarships to 60 women. Nearly three times as many men received the same. That should give you some pause. We know the oil and gas industry is male-dominated, but we also know that more women now are studying engineering and other STEM courses than in the last few decades. So why does the latter not translate into the former – even at the very earliest levels of tertiary education?

One simple explanation for this might be the distinct lack of gender representation. When people see others like themselves doing things, it can shift their sense of their own capabilities. More so today than they ever have, women are excelling in STEM. And yet, the focus in the oil and gas space is on elevating men. As recently as 2020, a BCG survey of the global oil and gas workforce found women held just 22% of jobs. Another McKinsey study in the same year revealed that in Africa and the Middle East, women make up less than 8% of technical jobs in the oil and gas sector and 9% of senior management positions in the energy industry. My own experience bears this out. Over the past decade in my career as a global manager of people, I have recruited over 100 people into various roles across three countries. Still, for every ten prospective candidates, only about two are women. This unequal starting point makes even the very best efforts at inclusivity challenging. It also suggests that not only are there intrinsic internal inhibitors: such as lack of technical training opportunities for women, expectations about gender roles, which close women out of opportunities in the field, there are also entrenched external beliefs about the industry that perhaps need to be unlearned.

To correct this, we must be purposeful in our actions to bring more women into the energy industry but also conscious that the spaces we create must allow them to thrive. The exclusionary, male-dominated cultures that have perpetuated to close women out of these spaces cannot be allowed to push them out once they are given a chance to enter. Recognize that men do not have to lose for women to win. It is by now trite knowledge that greater gender diversity has superior financial and economic outcomes – for businesses, even for countries. A 2021 McKinsey survey of 65,000 people found that compared to men of the same level, women are doing more to advance diversity, inclusion and provide support to their teams, a global pandemic notwithstanding. And according to the UNDP, since 2010, the gender gap in the labor market has cost sub-Saharan Africa $95 billion yearly in lost income.

Energy for the future
All that said, tomorrow is only possible if today is sustainable. The world is looking to energy sources that promise to avoid compromising our collective future. Renewable energy projects globally are rolling out at their fastest pace in four years and Africa is itself waking up to its renewable energy generation capacity. Financiers like the African Development Bank and the World Bank have put energy at the core of their transformation agenda. Put simply: the potential is vast. Gradually, fewer resources are being channelled into traditional oil and gas today. This means that we must be intentional about upskilling or reskilling to meet the demands of this transition. For women, who are already disproportionately excluded from opportunities and advancement, this imperative is even more urgent.

Avoiding the mistakes of the present necessitates designing solutions to tackle the challenges we witness. The challenges often pointed to as precluding women from advancing include: a lack of qualified candidates, family and child care responsibilities – in addition to social conditioning and gender-based discrimination. Solving for these is easy if we are resolute. Employers can provide or subsidise child-care options. Care arrangements might appear a significant upfront cost for a business, but studies have shown that such arrangements increase loyalty, decrease absenteeism and turnover. Governments can mandate local content quotas, or incentivise companies to hire women-owned energy servicing firms. Qualifications can also be taught. To increase womens’ technical exposure to the energy industry, we can ensure that they can access scholarships, fellowships, training and mentoring.

Learned beliefs are often harder to tackle because changes to belief systems take time. The gender stereotypes about maths and science that have existed for decades, manifest as relatively fewer women than men studying engineering and STEM courses. This in turn translates directly into the gender gap we observe in the labour market. So we must prioritise working to adjust the social conditioning and expectations of gender roles that have contributed to this disparity. Corrective policies are key to meeting this challenge head on.

Looking ahead
Even if the moral imperative for improving womens’ access to the energy industry is lacking, the economic imperative is clear and present, particularly for African nations looking to tap into their renewable energy capacity. Foreign investors are increasingly concerned about diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), because studies suggest more diverse companies outperform their less diverse peers. An EY survey of over 60 institutional investors representing $38 trillion in combined assets under management revealed that diversity of board, management, and workforce is considered to be one of the key drivers of strategic success over the next five years. It is reasonable then to expect that DEI — including gender diversity, will become an integral part of financing decisions. This tells us that we should have a vested interest in increasing womens’ retention – but also visibility, in our industry.

Nations rise and fall on the strength of their people. For Africa’s energy sector specifically, we cannot afford to exclude nearly half of our potential workforce. The case for it has never been stronger: increasing urbanisation, climate challenges and headwinds facing the oil and gas industry, are precipitating African countries to decrease their risk profiles and take a deeper look at more sustainable paths to meeting their energy needs. We are at the tipping point of an energy revolution: Goldman Sachs estimates the transition from fossils to cleaner energy sources will create a $16 trillion investment opportunity through 2030. So, empowering women is just smart economics. Empowering women in renewable energy secures our future.

“Vote APGA, Protect Your Votes” – Dr. Jeff Nnamani Charges Nkanu West Residents on Coming LG Election

People of Nkanu West Local Government Area have been asked to boldly show their hunger for a more progressive government in the area by voting massively for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Candidates in the coming Local Government election scheduled for Wednesday February 23rd across the state.

This charge was contained in a goodwill message delivered by Prince Dr. Jeff Nnamani at a meeting of Nkanu West Political Stakeholders which held in Agbani ward on Friday.
Present at the well-attended meeting were community, religious, age grade and political leaders; women and other socio-cultural groups; APGA Chairmanship and Councillorship candidates in the coming Local Government election as well as other notable personalities from all the wards of Nkanu West Local Government Area.

Dr. Jeff Nnamani called on residents to come out confidently on Wednesday to exercise their franchise, by not only voting, but protecting their votes, to ensure that they are not short-changed.
He advised them not to be afraid or intimidated to identify with APGA.

"You must be determined to have your say, because it is only with your vote that your voice can be heard. This is the honorable and courageous thing to do to bring about real progress and happiness. Let your votes speak out loudly that it's no longer going to be business as usual; it's now a new dawn", he stated.

Dr. Jeff further said as a strong believer in Democracy, he is participating in the coming LG election to demonstrate the fact that Democracy is really a practical thing, not theoretical.
He commended APGA for choosing to participate in the elections, adding that people should not shun or boycott the election in the belief that it will be compromised in favour of the ruling party.

He described the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as the only party the people can truly trust to provide responsible and accountable style of government which the people yearn for but has been lacking so far.

“Today, the only credible political party around is APGA. Your yearning for development-oriented style of governance at all levels in the state can only be realized if you choose to be counted by using your votes to elect credible representatives from the APGA party that is spiritually and emotionally connected to the Ndi Igbo's dream of socio-economic freedom, Nkea bu Nke anyi”, he stated.

In his welcome speech, the meeting host and Agbani ward chairman (APGA), Chief Okafor Ifeanyi Prosper, welcomed Dr. Jeff Nnamani who he described as a Breadth of Fresh Air (Ikuku oma) that touches and benefits everyone. He noted that the unveiling of Dr. Jeff Nnamani as an APGA member just last week has electrified the political scene and changed the political equation of 2023 succession in Enugu State.

He averred that, “Our people know the party they want. Agbani is APGA, Nkanu West is APGA and by the grace of God, the whole of Enugu State is set to shake off the forces that have kept us down for so long and to choose a brighter tomorrow under an APGA government piloting the affairs of our great state. All we need is for Enugu State Government to ensure a level playing field to enable the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission not to compromise the Wednesday 23rd February 2022 LG Election”

Politics / Re: Enugu 2023: APGA Commences Repositioning, Calls For Credible Elections by Mainblockent(f): 2:44pm On Feb 10, 2022

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Enugu says it is ready to lead the battle for the realisation of the yearning of citizens for transformative and development oriented governance in the state. Chairman of the party, Mr. Ndubuisi Elechionyia, who made the disclosure at a grand event at the party's secretariat to formally announce the membership of a prominent new member, Dr. Jeff Nnamani, enjoined the state and its citizens to remain optimistic of a total liberation from the mismanagement that the party in power has served throughout its 23 years of regressive political hegemony. The APGA Leader noted that the coming Local Government elections would serve as the take off point for the new lease of life for the state.
He warned the Enugu State Electoral Commission to work for credible, free and fair Local Government Council and Governorship elections in the state. He also called on the state government to create a level-playing electoral field for all parties at the forthcoming Local Government Chairmanship election.

“Our party is buoyed by having people with good reputation like Dr. Jeff Nnamani coming to strengthen us in the battle for the liberation of our dear state from misgovernance because his well known reputation as a consistent and dependable apostle of accountability, transparency and developmental politics gels with our party's vision"

“Jeff Nnamani has all it takes to represent this party at any level and we are looking forward to welcoming many others like him who are ready to sacrifice for the utmost good of our dear state and the great APGA party", Elechionyia further said.

In his speech, Dr. Jeff Nnamani paid tributes to the founding fathers of APGA and asked for a minute's silence in the memory of Chief Odimegwu Ojukwu who, according to him, remained the evergreen torchlight for the liberation of the entire South East. He, thereafter, urged the party faithful and the generality of Enugu citizens to do their part in keeping alive the dream of the great Leader by registering and collecting their PVCs for the coming elections in Enugu state.

He described APGA as the only untainted option available to patriots and well meaning Enugu citizens to adopt as platform to rescue the state from the current visionlessness.

“We cannot afford to fail at the forthcoming Local Government Election because we need to start the task of reformation and reclamation of our state from the grassroots.

“Remember, you need to have the right to vote and your right to vote is bestowed through your PVC; so, register and collect it,” he charged.

Dr. Nnamani also enjoined citizens to develop stronger interest in voting and ensuring their votes count because the true power to choose good representatives at all government levels rests with the people.

“I made the choice to join APGA because it is the only party that can uplift our state and give a new hope to the citizens; it is the only party that has produced the best performing governors in South East since this current democratic experience started in 1999,” Nnamani disclosed.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Nsukka Local Government Council APGA chairmanship aspirant, Mrs Ngozi Ugwuanyi, said the arrival of Dr. Nnamani in the party has given members confidence lift and a greater sense of belief that their party can challenge other parties on all fronts.

She expressed optimism that the party would record massive success at the Local Government Council election coming up on Feb. 23.

Politics / Enugu 2023: APGA Commences Repositioning, Calls For Credible Elections by Mainblockent(f): 2:42pm On Feb 10, 2022

Recently, a brand-new online streaming TV was launched in Lagos, Nigeria. It is SuperTV.
The promoters of SuperTV led by the acting CEO and Chief Content Strategist, Ijeoma Onah,
believe that SuperTV has come to disrupt the online entertainment streaming business.

According to her SuperTV enters the market with a strategy that is customer-centric. In fact,
she says that the subscriber is in the centre of SuperTV creative imagination. The SuperTV
package is full to the brim with so many mouth-watering and enticing offerings and
propositions too good to be believed. But in this article, we will examine just five of the core
benefits of streaming online entertainment on SuperTV.

ZERO DATA

SuperTV’s power packed operational and hard-to-beat market entry strategy is based on a
ZERO DATA proposition. SuperTV promoters understand the financial challenges faced by
Nigerians on a daily basis. They understand the financial strain on the people. Their
business is innovated towards the alleviation of the pressure Nigerians go through day after
day. This is why SuperTV is built on the pillars of a unique “Zero Data” proposition. Nigeria
currently has about 173 million mobile subscribers with a penetration rate of 123%.

Smartphone penetration is 40 million – forecasted to grow to more than 140 million by 2025.
In spite of these very impressive numbers, Nigeria is still performing very poorly in the
streaming markets, hardly even showing up in global statistics. The major reason for this is
that the average Nigerian cannot afford the data costs required to stream video. This is how
and why SuperTV was conceived, to democratise streaming in Nigeria and Africa through the
imaginative and innovative ZERO DATA offering. This is entirely new and targeted at lifting the
heavy data weight slowing Nigerians down to enjoy their entertainment on the go.
This is good news and a core reason why Nigerians should stream their online entertainment
on the SuperTV App.

PARTNERSHIP WITH MTN

SuperTV partners Nigeria’s largest telecom Network, MTN. This partnership strategy is to
ensure easy subscribers’ access, and affordability of SuperTV products and services
everywhere they go – with MTN network coverage. This partnership leverages cutting edge
innovation and technology that offers us a competitive advantage in the industry. With SuperTV,
subscribers do not incur internet data charges to stream after subscription. The user gets to
enjoy either Live TV, Video on Demand, or both, at absolutely no additional cost after subscribing
successfully. With the MTN back up, there is an assurance of success in value delivery of brand
offerings, especially in the area of seamless streaming of entertainment products by subscribers.

CHANNEL VARIETY

SuperTV also partners with different live TV channels for live TV feeds on the go. The local and
international movie industries who provides the different genres ranging from Nollywood movies
and all its sub-genres to International feature films and its sub-genres; Hollywood, Bollywood,
Korean, Turkish, Telenovelas etc. The Kids are not left out as there are animations and educational
kid content also available. Sports, food & culinary, travel, automobile, animals & wildlife, history &
culture and documentaries are also included. SuperTV plays on the ideology of variety, affordability,
and all-inclusiveness. SuperTV wants Nigerians to enjoy the best of entertainment via best movies,
best processes, best technology and premium management.

SACHET PACKAGE AFFORDABLE OFFERING

Beyond the Zero Data offering, subscription on SuperTV is cheaper compared to others who use data
in addition. The product features include: Zero data to stream, TV Everywhere, airtime payments,
flexible price plans (‘sachet’ packages) – daily, monthly, weekly (with emphasis on reduced total streaming
costs for the subscriber), Live TV and VOD, the service is available on all connected devices. SuperTV
developed very flexible and modest price plans which have been approved by the Nigerian Communications
Commission (NCC), and have taken challenges in this part of the world into consideration during the process.

From this it developed sachet prices for the various plans which include Daily, Weekly and Monthly plans for
the Gold, Silver and Bronze bouquets with daily prices starting from N200.00 (about the price for a bottle of soft drink).

SUPERTV EASY APP AVAILABILITY

The SuperTV App is to easy download, and is available to MTN subscribers starting October 1, 2021, to coincide
with Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration. The user downloads the App from the App Store
(Google play store or Apple store) – that is the only time the internet is required, installs the App, taps on it to launch.
User gets logged in automatically provided the Sim card is on the MTN network, selects trial for first time users only
or any other plan of choice (if user has already taken the trial), make payment for the subscription with airtime,
relaunches app and starts streaming from the wonderful array of content available on the chosen plan. The entire
process could take less than a couple of minutes. In order to be relevant across borders and barriers, SuperTV products
will be focused on making life easier for everyone. SuperTV will open up access to inclusiveness in entertainment.
SuperTV is going to make affordable entertainment accessible to everyone.

Super Network Limited is set to make available its new online streaming app, SuperTV on Nigeria's Independence Day, October 1, 2021. The app is set to be made available on both Google Play and Apple stores.

This launch has many watchers of the Nigerian entertainment sector excited, especially given the partnership with leading telecoms giant, MTN Nigeria. This market entry strategy is seen by many industry experts as a power move that will ensure easy subscribers’ network access, and affordability of SuperTV products and services given the fact of MTN's wide network coverage.

SuperTV app, set to offer both live TV and Video on Demand services has also gone into other partnerships with different live TV channels in order to be able to provide diverse content to its users, including Nollywood and international movies, educational kid content, sports, history and other varieties.

Speaking at the event to unveil the “ZERO DATA” offering, Acting CEO of Super Network Limited, Ijeoma Onah said that, “Nigeria currently has about 173 million mobile subscribers with a penetration rate of 123%. Smartphone penetration is 40 million - forecasted to grow to more than 140 million by 2025. This is how and why SuperTV was conceived, to democratise streaming in Nigeria and Africa.”

She further said that SuperTV is opening up access to inclusiveness in entertainment without barriers since the use of smart devices is evolving and the SuperTV brand will be uniquely opening the doors of access, communication and participation on the global stage. According to her, this ‘democratisation of streaming’ entails that the subscriber does not incur internet data charges to stream their preferred content after subscribing to SuperTV.

“The user gets to enjoy either Live TV, Video on Demand or both at absolutely no additional cost after subscribing successfully. They have access to TV everywhere with MTN network coverage. We also leveraged on the sachet culture in Nigeria by providing daily plans across all our bouquets thereby making the service affordable and inclusive for everyone. Our entry level price of N200 for the Bronze Daily plan is about the cost of a bottle of soft drink for example. SuperTV therefore offers great entertainment and an affordable viewing experience,” Onah added.
