Politics / Why I Refused N2bn Offered Me By Buhari – Akwa Ibom Speaker, Luke by Makins2rue: 10:32am On Aug 12, 2018
Onofiok Luke, the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, has alleged that the Presidency offered him N2 billion and the deputy governorship slot to dump the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Luke spoke during a solidarity rally for the State Governor, Udom Emmanuel and Senator from the state, Bassey Albert in Uyo, the state capital.

The Speaker noted that he would rather quit politics than defect to the APC.

According to Luke, “They said the President had sent words for me to become the deputy governor. They offered me N2bn, but I said no. If you like, offer me N10bn, mine is no.

Speaking on the defection of former Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, Luke said the action was borne out of personal interest.

He insisted that the defection was aimed at grabbing and sharing power.

“They have no plan for us and no plans for the future of our state. It was all about them. It was only about power grabbing and power-sharing, but by God’s amazing grace, we will overcome them,” Luke said.

“I wish to express my gratitude for this opportunity given me to serve the nation as the Minister of Transportation.

“However, I would like to get feedback on our overall performance from you; where you feel we have succeeded or should improve on.

Politics / Buhari Asked Us To Focus On Northern Nigeria — World Bank by Makins2rue: 3:07pm On Oct 13, 2017
Buhari asked us to focus on northern Nigeria — World Bank

Oyetunji Abioye, Washington DC

The President of the World Bank Group, Jim Yong Kim, said on Thursday that the bank had concentrated on the northern region of Nigeria in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s request.

Kim and the Managing Director, International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, who spoke at separate press conferences in Washington DC, United States, also advised Buhari to invest in things that would enhance economic growth.

Kim said, “You know, in my very first meeting with President Buhari he said specifically that he would like us to shift our focus to the northern region of Nigeria and we’ve done that. Now, it has been very difficult. The work there has been very difficult.

“I think Nigeria, of course, has suffered from the dropping oil prices. I think things are just now getting better. But the conversation we need to have with Nigeria, I think, is in many ways related to the theme that I brought to the table just this past week, which is investment in human capital. The percentage of the Gross Domestic Product that Nigeria spends on healthcare is less than one percent.”

He added, “Despite that, there is so much turbulence in the northern part of the country, and there is the hit that was taken from the drop in the oil prices. Nigeria has to think ahead and invest in its people. Investing in the things that will allow Nigeria to be a thriving, rapidly growing economy in the future is what the country has to focus on right now.”

Kim also said, “Focusing on the northern part of Nigeria, we hope that as commodity prices stabilise and oil prices come back up, the economy will grow a bit more. But very, very much important is the need to focus on what the drivers of growth in the future will be.”

According to the World Bank boss, the bank will invest in human capital in other parts of Africa in order to prepare the continent for the next phase of growth.

Lagarde, in her remarks, said Sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria, had posted suboptimal growth in recent times.

Minimum wage: Reps recommend N30,000 to avert looming strike

The growth figures, she said, were far too small considering the huge demographic potential of Nigeria and other countries in the region.

As a result, she said the IMF would be engaging ministers of finance and central bank governors from the region attending the annual World Bank and IMF meetings on how they could boost and stabilise economic growth.

Lagarde said, “The Sub-Saharan Africa is one region of the world where growth is suboptimal. Those countries grow at an average growth of 2.5 per cent. That is too low for the demographic expansion of the region.”

The IMF managing director said emerging and developing economies must invest more in their economies through infrastructural spending, strengthening safety nets, allowing women more access to the labour market and carrying structural reforms.

Politics / Reconstruction Of The Fuel Crisis by Makins2rue: 8:47am On May 28, 2015
The Federal Government paid the calculated 59 billion naira or thereabouts to the oil importers/ marketers fully and told them 'Now, we don't owe you anymore backlogs.'

The greedy oil marketers came up with a new caveat; ' Mrs Okonjo-Iweala, when we imported the fuel, we imported and borrowed money at the old official rate of N165 to a dollar. But when the naira got devalued, we have a N20 difference to pay up to the banks. We demand that the government pay us the differential to offset our losses. Besides, this is the only time we have to make those demands. Buhari has said he will cancel importation and subsidy and since this means an end to our businesses, we must get the parting gift from the government. We demand for N200 billion naira to offset our bills due to currency devaluation"

Okonjo-Iweala flared up. ' That is blackmail! You all are trying to blackmail the Federal Government and Nigerians. Your demands are preposterous and can never hold water anywhere. I will not sign off any amount other than the N59 billion verified and agreed and which has been paid to all your accounts. You rogues believe you can arm twist the President into acceding to this economic sabotage. You expect me to agree to sign this and then when Buhari enters, they will say I signed off 200 billion during the last days of my tenure. I'm a world bank former MD with the highest principles of accounting standards. What you are asking for is illegal and not even contained in the Federal budget. I will not do it'

The Oil Marketers nodded their heads slowly. ' Ok. We will show you all that we have power. That even the new government coming in has to reckon with us. We will stop supplying fuel till that money is paid'

Okonjo-Iweala told them ' Go do your worst. But read my lips; I won't budge'

And The Cabal went to work. Now, what people don't understand is that The Cabal has very strong tentacles in all sectors and interests in those circles are intertwined. The Oil Marketers stopped lifting fuel immediately. Curiously but efficiently, the Oil Unions, NUPENG and PENGASSAN immediately went on strike on a flimsy excuse. PENGASSAN controls the gas sector and shut down the gas supply to the electricity sector. Power generation dropped and PHCN went off. These saboteurs popped champagne and waited for the nation to be brought to its knees, which happened before long.

Okonjo-Iweala reported the case to President Jonathan with the Attorney - General present.

'AG, what is the legal implication of paying those guys, assuming we decide to do it to end the suffering the people are facing right now?' Jonathan asked.

The Attorney - General replied ' Sir, effectively you have signed the 2015 budget into law. We are now working with the new budget. This demand is not captured in the new budget and anything out of this budget is illegal and would have to be approved first by the national assembly'

Okonjo-Iweala chipped in ' Mr President, the way I see it, this is pure blackmail. This government has been blackmailed by your friends and enemies since you got into power. This one is the height of such rubbish'

'I agree with you, Madam Finance Minister. Though the people may suffer this but I cannot in anyway agree to this, even with the legal implications. I will brief General Buhari'

When General Buhari was briefed about the marketers demand and the fuel crisis, he blinked his eyes a few times, thoughtfully.

'This is not something I can say anything about until I am sworn in. The situation looks dicey and I am not in power right now to handle the situation.'

President Jonathan replied 'Well, I refuse to do anything unconstitutional concerning this. We must leave the marketers to their conscience.'

And so, the cabal had their way.

And it's a big Shame too for those who call themselves educated in this country. They just sit and write and curse. 'Oh, Jonathan is paying back Nigerians for voting him out' , they write. So, the ones who voted for him, nko? People have no sense or no gift of reasoning at times, I'm sorry to say. These same people in 6 months from now, may be singing a different tune about Buhari.
