NYSC / Fct Corp Member’s Take Change To The Street by malipberry: 5:18pm On Jul 02, 2015
Following on the heels of a successful pre elections (March 28 polls) sensitization programme, promoting a violence free election in what could arguably be one of Nigeria’s tensest moments in the political arena where the nation oscillated between uncertainty and obliteration, Olusegun Sidiku, remember him? The young amiable batch ‘B’ corper fondly called “government pickin” continued his mission of giving his best to ensure Nigeria becomes the country of his dreams.
Well, it might interest you to know that unlike his prior solo attempt at this humongous task, more spirited young men and women who bought into the novel idea decided to lend their support to the cause by joining him to impart the much needed positive mental disposition to the trite slogan of “change”. Together with fellow Corps members; Richard Tsado, Evangeline Anumba, Dorothy Yakubu and couple of volunteers, Segun led this congenial band to Kuchingoro – Lugbe axis of the FCT on yet another eventful advocacy visit to just about anyone or group they ran into. Fast becoming a signature style, the spritely bunch wore customized white vests with inscriptions such as “preach change, live change” and “be the change you want to see”.
The essence of the campaign was to try and convince Nigerians that the so called “change” currently yearned for would be nothing but a mirage unless people consciously took the initiative to drive that change to reality by first departing from the business-as-usual way of doing things and rather put more effort in always doing the right thing. The group elaborated further that Just like the saying goes that he who comes to equity must come with clean hands, Nigerians must not always rely for the top-down of approach of nation cleansing, instead a revolutionary change driven by the populace could speed up the process and eventually force our leaders to follow suit. Accountability must be demanded from people in positions of authority on a fairly consistent basis to keep them in check.
It is worthy of note that the group also decided to give out food items to the less privileged as a show of compassion and called on the new government not to renege on its campaign promises. When asked about the outing, Segun was ecstatic that more and more Nigerians had begun seeing things differently as they have become more aware of both political and economic space. He concluded by reiterating his belief that what happens on the individual’s inside matters more that the outward aesthetics and that people should latch on fast to the slowly developing paradigm of being the change they want to see. He thanked his fellow Corps members for their support but more importantly all Nigerians for their resilience.

Politics / Modupe Ozolua's Foundation Sponsors Education For 501 Displaced Children In Yola by malipberry: 1:22pm On Apr 23, 2015
Barely one week after rehabilitating internally displaced women in Gombe by giving them funds and equipment to start businesses and paying for their rent; Body Enhancement Foundation has sponsored the education of 501 displaced children between the ages of 1 to 14yrs at the Lamido Lawal Model Primary School, Girei LGA, in Adamawa State.Upon visiting the camp, the team discovered the children were not being educated unlike some camps where temporary schools are provided for the children. At that point, the foundation immediately provided funds for school uniforms, shoes, books, writing materials, boards, writing chalk, rulers and hired teachers amongst the displaced Nigerians at the camp to commence teaching the children. The foundation has also taken up the responsibility of paying the teachers monthly salaries. All the children between nursery and primary 6 ages at the camp are beneficiaries of the Foundation’s benevolence. On Wednesday, February 25th the donated items were presented to the students and present at the ceremony which held at the camp, was the first lady of Adamawa State, Her Excellency, Mrs Hasana Ngilari who gave an appreciation speech and joined in distributing the school materials to the children.Modupe Ozolua during her speech thanked the governor, the first lady, officials of Adamawa State SEMA and all other relief organizations that have worked tirelessly towards providing different forms of assistance to displaced Nigerians all over the country. In addition, she informed the displaced families that they should be hopeful because God has not forgotten nor forsaken them. She also told the children that their destinies are not tied to a refugee camp, so they should not feel they can’t be as great as they wish to be.Ozolua stated the Body Enhancement Foundation’s sponsored school program is part of the organization’s rehabilitation plan for the internally displaced Nigerians, which will impact all camps in Nigeria.

Pls, has anyone seen the forensic audit report by pricewaterhouse coopers? Cos I haven't and I'd really love to see that report. It should be made public, nigerians deserves to have access to that report.
Politics / NNPC Has Started Refunding Unremitted $1.48bn –alison-madueke by malipberry: 7:02am On Apr 23, 2015
The Minister of Petroleum Resources Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, on Wednesday disclosed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has started refunding the $1.48bn unremitted fund into the Federation Account as recommended by an audit firm, PriceWaterHouse Coopers. She however did not disclose how much has for far been refunded by the corporation. She also denied reports that she was seeking the assistance of some highly-placed persons in order to escape prosecution for alleged corruption from the incoming administration of the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.Alison-Madueke spoke with State House correspondents at the end of the weekly meeting of Federal Executive Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. It will be recalled the Federation Account Allocation Committee had on Monday night constituted a committee to find out the reasons for the delay in the refund of the sum.PriceWaterHouse Coopers had in the report of its forensic audit report of the corporation recommended that the NNPC should refund the amount to the Federation Account.Alison-Madueke however explained that the unremitted fund was owed by the NPDC for a block that had been assigned from the NNPC to the NPDC.She said, “The PriceWaterHouse Coopers forensic audit that was done few weeks ago in his recommendation mentioned that $1.48bn was owed by the NPDC for a block that had hitherto been assigned from the NNPC to the NPDC which is its subsidiary.“They felt that the right process would be that the NPDC will refund that money to the Federation Account. The NPDC has apparently started those refunds and it is also in discussion with the NNPC and the DPR on same. So the refund has actually began.”While saying that the payment was being done under her directive, she insisted that the sum was not missing but transferred by the NNPC to the NPDC.The minister also denied media reports that she was reaching out to some prominent Nigerians, including a former military Head of State, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar (retd.), to seek soft landing from the incoming government. She said she had in the course of her job as minister met with elder statesmen across the country and wondered why her meeting with Abubakar would be singled out.The minister said she could not be seeking for a soft landing because she was not aware that she had committed any crime. She said, “I have not sought such assistance because I am not aware that I have been indicted of any crime that I will need a soft landing.“Over the last four years, I have many times been unfortunately accused and libelled in so many malicious and vindictive ways.“I have explained these things and pushed back robustly on these accusations and I have even gone to court on many of them. Yet, they keep being regurgitated."

Politics / Eight Feared Killed In Rivers, A’ibom by malipberry: 6:47am On Apr 12, 2015
No fewer than eight people were feard killed on Saturday in Rivers and Akwa Ibom states.Three persons were killed in Buguma, the headquarters of Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State with one person reportedly beheaded by his assailants. There was also heavy shooting in Gokana, Ikwerre and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas as hoodlums attempted to snatch voting materials. In Gokana Local Government Area, four journalists were trapped for about one and half hours at the Saint Michael’s Quasi Parish in B-Dere community as unknown gunmen forced their way into the church premises in an attempt to snatch the five ballot boxes available at the polling units.Ernest Chinwo of ThisDay, Dapo Falade of the Nigerian Tribune, Bunmi Durojaiye of City People and Chukwudi Akasike of The PUNCH, who were at B-Dere Ward 4 in Gokana to monitor the election, escaped death by the whisker. The journalists, who drove into the venue at about 1.15pm became jittery when they tried to escape through the back of the church only to meet a brick wall in a high fence surrounding the environment. The policemen were forced to fire canisters of teargas to repel the irate youths, who were bent on taking the election materials away.Though, the hoodlums fired shots intermittently from different angles to scare voters away, the policemen manning the place returned fire for fire to save the situation. Two of the hoodlums, who made their way to the ballot boxes and other election materials were given the beating of their lives by some members of the B-Dere community. One of them had a head injury while the other pleaded for mercy until he was allowed to leave, even as the shooting continued endlessly from the sides of the premises. The confusion became worse when one of the indigenes of the area, who directed the journalists to enter the car that conveyed them to the ward and changed the directive a minute later.Security agents immediately led the journalists out of the vicinity to a safe.Speaking on the incident, the Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (Rivers South East), Dr. Fred Kpakol, attributed the shooting in B-Dere, Gokana to the handiwork of frustrated politicians in the area.Kpakol stated that it would be difficult for such politicians to succeed in snatching ballot boxes and other election materials in the area, adding that Gokana belongs to the PDP.“I don’t know why some people are so desperate. PDP is firmly on the ground in this community and Gokana is predominantly PDP. If you are popular, you will allow the election to hold.Meanwhile, five persons were feared killed in Akwa Ibom State during the governorship and state House of Assembly elections on Saturday. Also, a reporter with Radar Newspaper, a local tabloid in the state, Mr. Aniedi Ukoenang, was reported missing and his whereabouts unknown as of the time of this report. The killings occurred at Ward 5, Unit 14, Mbiabong Etoi and Shelter Afrique (Uyo); Ndiya in Nsit Ubium; Etim Ekpo and Ini local government areas of the state. The reporter was said to have been abducted by the thugs said to be loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party at Ekpeyong Ufum village, Odoro Ikot clan, in the Essien Udim Local Government Area. The publisher of the tabloid, Mr. Franklyn Isong, confirmed the abduction of the reporter. The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Baba Adisa Bolanta, who monitored the elections in the state, however, said he was unaware of the number of people killed but that he would contact the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Gabriel Achong, for details. When our correspondents contacted Achong, he asked them to contact Bolanta. The CP said that he was not in charge and so would not be able to comment on the issue.“Please contact the AIG, I am not in charge,” he said. Also, the All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State has announced the boycott of the governorship and state House of Assembly elections in the state. The party also called for the cancellation of Saturday’s exercise. The decision by the party to call for the boycott and cancellation of the elections followed reported instances of hijack of electoral materials by thugs and armed fake policemen, suspected to be sponsored by one of the leading parties.

Politics / I’ll Accept Defeat In Good Faith ─agbaje by malipberry: 2:19am On Apr 12, 2015
The Lagos State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, says he will accept defeat in good faith if he loses the election.Agbaje’s major contender, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, is the governorship candidate of the ruling party in Lagos, the All Progressives Congress.According to the PDP candidate, election should not be a do-or-die affair.Agbaje said, “There is no attitude about it when it comes to offering yourself to serve the people. If they say they prefer the other candidate, then you have to accept it in good faith. That is sportsmanship.”Agbaje arrived at his polling unit ─ 009 Douala, Apapa ─ around 10am with his wife, but it took six attempts for the card reader to recognise his fingerprint.Speaking on the experience, he said, “During the last polls, the card reader worked like magic for me. But today, it was at the sixth attempt that the card worked.“But that could be a problem in high density areas. The process could drag on if the machines do not work properly.”
