Foreign Affairs / Iran Says Two Soldiers Killed In Israeli Strikes but the attacks were countered by ManirBK: 3:34pm On Oct 26
The Iranian army said two soldiers have been killed in Israeli air strikes that targeted military bases, after Israel said it had “completed” its attack and warned against any retaliation.

The Israeli army struck military sites in Iran after 2am on Saturday (22:30 GMT on Friday) in response to what it said were months of attacks by “Iran and its proxies” in the region.

Hours later the Israeli military said it had “completed” the strikes and “achieved its objectives”.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Iran was “entitled and obligated to defend itself against external aggressive acts” after the attacks on its soil.

Iran’s air defence headquarters, in a statement, confirmed that bases in the provinces of Ilam, Khuzestan and Tehran were hit but the attacks were “successfully countered”.

“Though minor damages were caused in some areas, and the extent of the incident is currently under investigation,” it said. There was no immediate indication that oil or missile sites were hit.

Iran also indicated its readiness to respond to any Israeli “aggression”, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported, citing sources who said “there is no doubt that Israel will face a proportional reaction for any action it takes”. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/10/26/iran-says-israeli-strikes-on-military-bases-caused-limited-damage mynd44 lalasticlala seun nlfpmod fergie001

Politics / Kebbi Governor Approves ₦‎75,000 Minimum Wage, Orders Payment Within 72 Hours by ManirBK: 11:14pm On Oct 23
Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State on Wednesday approved 75,000 naira as a new minimum wage for the state civil servants.

Confirming the development, the chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress in the state, Murtala Usman, stated this while speaking with our correspondents.

“Mr Governor has shown that he is with the workers in the state. We proposed three tables for him.
We proposed 72,000, 73,000, and 75,000 naira and he decided to go for the 75,000 naira, which shows he is for the workers.

“To crown it all, he also said the payment starts this month of October, salaries which he categorically said should be made available to workers in the next 72 hours,” he added.

Politics / Nigerian Journalist Unveils Hausa Fact-checking Platform by ManirBK: 9:28pm On Oct 13
An international multimedia bilingual journalist, Alhassan Bala, has launched a Hausa fact-checking platform called ‘Alkalanci’ (The Arbiter).
The platform focuses primarily on fact-checking claims on health, politics, and many other topics in Hausa language.
It will also be fact-checking pictures and videos to enlighten the Hausa readers in Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana and beyond about misleading claims or false pictures and videos.
This becomes even more imperative at this time when people now use photoshop and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create “deep fake” pictures and videos.
“We look at the digital space and realise how misinformation and disinformation are gaining ground among Hausa digital platform users
“There are also many myths and false claims on health matters that a number of people believe with utmost belief.“This is why it is important for us to provide a platform that will enlighten the Hausa readers,” Bala said in a statement on Sunday.
The statement continued: “We at the ‘Alkalanci’ would be providing media literacy so that people will know how to protect themselves from getting trapped by misinformation, disinformation or false claims, pictures and videos.”

Politics / Workers In Kebbi Lament Pay Deductions After Governor Idris Failed To Pay N70,00 by ManirBK: 5:40pm On Aug 28
ivil servants in Kebbi State have lamented that the state governor, Nasir Idris, dashed their hopes by not paying salaries based on the N70,000 new national minimum wage structure as promised.
Some of the civil servants also accused the state government of deducting from their wages after failing to pay the new minimum wage as approved by the federal government.
They claimed that the governor had earlier while addressing leaders of the organised labour in the state promised to be the first in the country to implement the new national minimum wage once approved by the federal government.
Workers on the payroll of Kebbi State government after anxiously waiting for new minimum wage were reportedly disappointed when they got the August paycheck, reflecting the old N30,000 minimum wage, contrary to the governor's promise.
"August salaries unexpectedly came with deduction and no one offered any explanation; we thought the governor would surprise us by unexpectedly paying N70,000 minimum wage but instead the government deducted our salaries.
"For instance, my salary is N45,000, but some N10,000 was strangely deducted and after servicing my loan I was left with only N5000.
"The governor had disappointed civil servants in the state particularly primary school teachers where he came from, when he came on board; many of us thought he would meet our demands immediately having traded the same path with us but he turned his back on us with no promotion implementation, no salary increment, no furniture in most primary schools; even in the state capital,” a civil servant who pleaded anonymity told SaharaReporters.
They also accused the governor of diverting the federal government’s fertilisers and distributing same to cronies and political associates.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the governor, Ahmed Idris denied the allegation saying, "There was no deduction on salaries. It’s a lie. In fact, the governor has surpassed expectations by paying N100,000 and above to pensioners in the state. He also gave palliatives randomly to indigent families across the state."

Crime / Abia: Police Shoot Each Other After Mistaking Themselves For IPOB Members by ManirBK: 8:48am On Aug 18
The police in Abia State, south-east Nigeria, say they are investigating a report that claimed some police operatives exchanged gunfire after mistaking themselves for members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Mistaken for IPOB members
There was confusion on Wednesday around Alaoji Area of Aba, the commercial hub of the state, when some police operatives reportedly opened fire on themselves.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the shootout occurred between police patrol teams from Police Area Command in Aba, and another police team from Umuahia, the state capital.

Residents claimed the operatives appeared to have mistaken themselves for IPOB members in the area.

It was learnt that the incident occurred because operatives from Umuahia operated in commercial buses, prompting their colleagues from Aba to mistake them for the separatist group.

PREMIUM TIMES gathered that during the shootout, shop owners around Alaoji Motor Spare Parts Market and passersby scampered for safety to avoid stray bullets.

The market is located along the Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway in the state.

A truck driver was killed by a stray bullet during the encounter.

It was learnt that an altercation ensued after the operatives realised that they were all police officers.

Reacting in a statement on Thursday, the police spokesperson in the state, Maureen Chinaka, said police authorities are investigating the incident.

“From our preliminary investigation, there is no credible evidence to suggest that police officers mistook themselves for members of IPOB and fired at each other,” Ms Chinaka, an assistant superintendent of police, said.

What we can confirm is that there was a shooting in that area, which resulted in the death of a civilian,” she stated.

Politics / 9mobile Customers Groan As Network Downtime Persists For 3 Days by ManirBK: 8:55am On Aug 01
9mobile’s customers have been complaining about a prolonged
network outage that is keeping them from making or receiving calls.
The telecoms operators experienced network downtime, few hours
after the announcement that the mobile network provider has been
acquired by LH Telecommunication Limited, a new investor, with
the intention of transforming it.
According to its customers, the network outage that started on
Saturday persisted until Tuesday and has yet to be restored as of
the time of this report’s filing. The situation is worsened by the lack
of communication from the telecom company to its customers over
the issue.
One of its subscribers, Oluwaseyi Lawal said: “It’s sad to see how
Etisalat has been ruined since it became 9mobile. Maybe if it was
never sold, it would have still maintained its standard. I had to go
to the bank and change the number on all my bank accounts to
MTN. What a shameful waste 9mobile is!”
Another subscriber added, “What exactly is the problem with
9mobile network seriously? How can we be going days without
network. I have not being able to make or receive calls neither can I
send out messages for over 48 hours. Can you fix this
immediately!!,”
Attempts by LEADERSHIP to reach 9mobile’s spokesperson,
Chineze Amafo, for comment on the matter proved abortive as she
was not picking up her calls nor responding to messages sent to
her via WhatsAp.

Sports / 2026 World Cup: How Nations From Around The World Can Qualify by ManirBK: 10:17pm On Jul 22
Qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup began on Oct. 12, 2023, when
minor nations from the Asian confederation played their first round of
matches. Myanmar's Lwin Moe Aung scored the very first goal in a 5-1
win over Macau.
Most confederations now have qualifying well underway, but we're a
long way from discovering who will join hosts United States, Mexico
and Canada.
Here's where we're at around the globe.

Europe (UEFA)
12 auto + 4 confederation playoff
There are 55 European nations, and qualifying will run from March to
November 2025. However, Russia remain suspended due to the
invasion of Ukraine and are unlikely to compete, leaving 54 nations.
There will be 12 groups of four or five teams, playing home and away
matches. The group winners will qualify directly for the World Cup.
The final four places will be determined via confederation playoffs, to
be played in March 2026. There is no path to the World Cup through
FIFA's intercontinental playoffs.
The UEFA playoff involves 16 teams: the 12 runners-up plus the four
best-ranked group winners from the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League,
who did not finish in the top two in World Cup qualifying. This creates
four routes, each with four teams featuring a semifinal and a final for
a place at the World Cup.

South America (CONMEBOL)
6 auto + 1 playoff
As in recent qualifying competitions, all 10 nations play each other
home and away. The top six nations qualify directly to the finals. The
seventh-placed team will go into the intercontinental playoffs in March
2026.
The first qualifiers took place in September 2023, with the league
phase to be completed in September 2025.

North America, Central America, Caribbean
(Concacaf)
3 auto + 2 playoff
Usually, Concacaf would have six automatic places in qualifying -- but
for the 2026 finals three of the six are taken up by the hosts. That
leaves three places to be won, plus two spots in the intercontinental
playoffs.
Concacaf saw 32 nations enter the race to make the finals.
Round 1: The four lowest-ranked Concacaf nations battled it out in
two-legged ties. Anguilla and British Virgin Islands eliminated Turks
and Caicos Islands and U.S. Virgin Islands respectively, both on
penalties.
Round 2: The top 28-ranked nations, plus the two winners from Round
1, were drawn into six groups of five teams. The six group winners
and six group runners-up will move on to Round 3. This stage will be
played in two blocks, one in June 2024 and the other in June 2025.
- Check out the latest fixtures and results here | Latest tables
Round 3: The 12 remaining teams will be drawn into three groups of
four teams. The group winners will qualify for the World Cup, with the
two runners-up with the best record going on to take part in the
intercontinental playoffs. This phase will be played in September,
October and November 2025.

Africa (CAF)
9 auto + 1 playoff
There were 54 FIFA-affiliated nations in the draw, but Eritrea
subsequently withdrew.
Round 1: The 53 teams are in eight groups of six nations, and one
group of five. The nine group winners qualify for the World Cup,
This stage began in November 2023 and will be completed in October 2025.

Asia (AFC)
8 auto + 1 playoff
This is by some distance the most complicated route to the World
Cup, with a layered qualifying process which creates a dual group
stage to find the eight automatic qualifiers.
Round 1: The 20 lowest-ranked nations played two-legged ties in
October 2023. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong,
Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore and Yemen
advanced.
Round 2: Those 10 winners joined the 26 best-ranked nations. The 36
teams were drawn into nine groups of four teams, with the top two
nations going through to Round 3. This stage began in November 2023
and will be completed in June 2024.
- Check out the latest results here | Final tables
Advanced: Australia, Bahrain, China, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Japan,
Jordan, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, North Korea, Oman, Palestine,
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan
Round 3: We're now left with 18 nations, who will be drawn into three
groups of six teams in July. Matches will be held from September
2024 through to June 2025
The group winners and runners up will take the first six places at the
2026 World Cup.
The six nations who finished in third and fourth move on to round 4.
Round 4: The six teams in this stage will be drawn into two groups of
three. They will play each other once, so two matches, on neutral
ground in October 2025.
The group winners take the final two automatic places at the World
Cup.
The runners-up continue on to Round 5.
Round 5: The two runners-up will play a two-legged tie in November
2025 to earn the place in the intercontinental playoffs.

Oceania (OFC)
1 auto + 1 playoff
All 11 members of the OFC region will take part.
Round 1: The four lowest-ranked nations will play a knockout format
(two semis and a final) in September 2024 for a place in round two.
The games will be played in Samoa.
American Samoa, Cook Islands, Samoa and Tonga take part.
Round 2: The winners from round one join the seven top-ranked
nations.
The eight nations have been drawn into two groups of four nations,
with matches played in October and November 2024. Games will be
held in New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.
Group A: Solomon Islands, Fiji, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea
Group B: New Zealand, Tahiti, Vanuatu and the round one winner
The top two countries in each group go on to round three.
Round 3: Four countries remain, and will play a knockout format (two
semis and a final) in March 2025.
The winners of the final qualifies for the World Cup, with the losers
playing in the intercontinental playoff.
Intercontinental playoffs (2 places)
The playoffs, to be held in March 2026, will determine the final two
qualifiers.
Six countries will take part. Each of the five confederations (apart
from UEFA) will have one country in the playoffs. The host
confederation (so for this edition Concacaf) receives a second slot.
1 Africa
1 Asia
2 Concacaf
1 Oceania
1 South America
The two nations with the best FIFA World Ranking will be seeded and
go straight into one of the two finals.
The four other countries will be drawn to play a semifinal, feeding
through to play one of the seeds for one of the two places at the
World Cup.
The playoffs are due to be held in one of the World Cup host nations
as a test event.

Politics / Gov Aliyu Vows To Punish Officials Who Diverted Workers’ Sallah Gifts by ManirBK: 9:23am On Jul 08
Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has vowed to punish government officials who tempered with the Sallah gift approved for the workers.

The governor had approved N30,000 as a Sallah gift for each worker under the state and local government employ, including teachers.

However, it was alleged that, some of the workers, especially at the local government areas, were not given up to that amount.

Some were given N19,000, some received N20,000 and there are some who are yet to receive their own,” one of the affected workers told Daily Trust.

ECOWAS heads of state meet in Abuja
Addressing a mammoth crowd of well-wishers and supporters at the Government House, Sokoto at the weekend, the governor warned the officials behind the diversion to immediately return the money or face a serious consequence.

“I wonder how somebody would deny our workers the stipend we gave them in order to make them financially stable during the Sallah festive season.

“Those who diverted those funds must return them immediately or else we will take serious punitive measures against them.

“We will ensure that the culprits reap what they sowed to serve as a deterrent to others
,
” he said.

Governor Aliyu, therefore, charged all heads of agencies where such diversions were perpetrated to hasten the compilation of all the affected workers and ensure that they are refunded.

He also assured the people of the state of his administration’s determination to ensure accountability, transparency and the prudent management of public funds for the good of all.

“This administration is all out to ensure zero-tolerance for corruption and all corrupt tendencies. So, if anybody thinks he can loot public funds and gets away with it then, he must be sick.

“This administration is a true reflection of the government of the people, for the people and indeed by the people. So, we have a huge task ahead of us that we must carry out diligently without minding whose ox is gored,” Aliyu added.

The governor further called on the people of the state to continue to rally round the present administration in its quest to deliver on its campaign promises.

The governor also thanked the APC leader in the state, Sen. Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, for his “fatherly role and guidance” to the present leadership in the state.

He also thanked the entire people of the state for their support and prayers to the present administration.
