Donald Trump will sign an executive order on Friday making English the official language of the United States, according to White House officials. The US president is also expected to scrap requirements that federal agencies provide language services to non-English speakers. The US has never had an official language in the nearly 250 years since the country was founded. The order is intended to improve government efficiency and promote national unity, according to White House officials. Nearly 68 million of the country's 340 million residents speak a language other than English, according to the US Census Bureau, which includes more than 160 Native American tongues. Friday's executive order will roll back a policy from 2000 signed by former President Bill Clinton requiring government agencies and federal funding recipients to "ensure that their programs and activities normally provided in English are accessible to LEP (low-English proficiency) persons". Agencies will still be allowed to provide that language access to non- English speakers, according to White House officials. Republicans have led efforts in the past to label English as the country's official language, with members of the House as recently as 2021 introducing legislation on it that failed. Those who opposed those efforts say that the country does not need an official language, pointing to the high numbers of people who speak it and to the country never having one, while also saying establishing one could promote discrimination against non- English speakers. During his presidential campaign last year, Trump included non-English languages in his statements calling for stricter immigration policies. "We have languages coming into our country. We don't have one instructor in our entire nation that can speak that language," he told a crowd of supporters in February 2024. "It's the craziest thing - they have languages that nobody in this country has ever heard of. It's a very horrible thing," he said. And during the 2016 campaign he said, "This is a country where we speak English. It's English. You have to speak English!" When the US was founded, most residents spoke English and those writing the country's constitution did not feel it was necessary to enshrine it as the official language and also did not want to alienate fellow new citizens who spoke German or other languages, according to most scholars. The languages currently spoken the most in the US after English are Spanish, various Chinese languages, Tagolog, Vietnamese and Arabic, according to the Census Bureau. A further approximately one million people use American Sign Language, according to experts. Approximately 180 countries around the world designate official national languages, and most countries recognise multiple official languages. However, several countries besides the US do not have an official language, including the United Kingdom. There are more than 30 US states which have designated English as the official language, while Alaska and Hawaii have also bestowed official status on several native languages. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn9v1l80350o Mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala nlfpmod seun Fergie001 |

The federal government has signed a cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia’s Halal Products Development Company (HPDC) to establish Nigeria as a leading player in the global halal market valued at $7.7 trillion. The agreement is expected to facilitate investment, technical cooperation and market access across key sectors, including food production, pharmaceuticals, finance and livestock. Speaking during the signing ceremony at the Makkah Halal Forum in Saudi Arabia, Vice President Kashim Shettima pointed out that the partnership represents a game-changing opportunity to transform Nigeria into a global halal economy powerhouse. SPONSOR AD “The vice president, who was represented by Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, (Office of the Vice President), Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, said, “This collaboration is an important step in our ambition to not only tap into the lucrative halal market but to establish Nigeria as a leading global player. We are committed to leveraging this collaboration to create jobs, attract foreign investment, and diversify our economy in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.” The agreement is executed with HPDC, a subsidiary of the Saudi Public Investment Fund, represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Fahad Alnuhait, in the presence of Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Commerce, Dr. Majid bin Abdullah Al-Qasabi; Chairman of the Makkah Halal Forum’s Organizing Committee, His Excellency Mr. Fawaz bin Talal Al-Harbi, and Chairman of Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, His Excellency Mr. Abdullah bin Saleh Kamel. Also speaking, Special Assistant to the President on Export Promotion, Aliyu Bunu Sheriff, said the partnership builds on Nigeria’s growing Islamic finance sector, which has seen success through Sukuk bonds for infrastructure financing and the establishment of Islamic banks like Jaiz Bank, Taj Bank and Lotus Bank. Sheriff explained that the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) will support the initiative through capacity building, regulatory framework development, and financing opportunities. “This agreement aligns perfectly with the Renewed Hope Agenda by creating new jobs, attracting foreign direct investment, and diversifying our economy. “The halal economy extends beyond Muslim consumers. Non-Muslim majority countries like Brazil, Australia and Thailand are already leveraging the sector for substantial export growth,” he said. https://dailytrust.com/nigeria-signs-pact-with-saudi-arabia-to-boost-7-7trn-halal-economy/ Mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala nlfpmod Fergie001 |

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his ₦200bn intervention in the agriculture sector, saying it has given farmers across the country renewed hope. The Minister gave the commendation in Abuja at the maiden edition of the Nigeria-Kazakhstan Business Council International Conference, organised by the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, in collaboration with the Nigeria-Kazakhstan Business Council. While speaking further, Kyari said, “As an economist, I know market prices are determined by supply and demand. It’s simple microeconomics. “What happened before was that we were challenged by high demand and low supply. But for 2024, we had a positive harvest, which means we have more supply than in previous years.” “It was a deliberate attempt by Mr President to make sure that we bring down food inflation to the bare minimum. And we are still not relenting. “We are looking at price stabilisation mechanisms. Within the next two weeks, we want to roll out the stabilisation to further dampen and bring down the price without, I must say this, discouraging local production.” “Now we have seen people who were hoarding bringing the foodstuff out because they bought it at a high price, and they don’t want to make any losses. “We are also discouraging hoarding at the same time. So we have gone into the second season wet. The first part of the dry season was in November. Hopefully, we are going to have an all-year-round harvesting of staple crops,” he said. He also confirmed that food prices in the country have crashed by 40 per cent. He said, “I believe you are aware of what is going on in the commodity markets now. We have people out there surveying markets in the country. I have not even seen some of my staff for the past two weeks. “They’re monitoring and giving us real-time day- to-day prices of foodstuff, and we have seen how it crashed within the last month by 40 per cent. However, we are also pleading with processors of food to pass down those benefits of the crash to Nigerian citizens. “That is very key because people are still using the finished products at the same price, without passing it on to the Nigerian population. So we are also monitoring those and keenly watching what is happening in the retail sector.” When asked what was responsible for the price crash, Kyari disclosed that it was a case of demand outweighing supply. Earlier in his speech, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II, commended President Bola Tinubu, saying the hardship resulting from his bold economic reforms is gradually giving way and yielding fruits for Nigerians. The monarch also said that the arbitrage between the parallel and the official markets has been closed completely for the first time in 20 years. “We all know the challenges of our dear country. I will give a simple example of a plane dropping at the highest altitude. Any casualty can come up in that process. “But we thank God Almighty that things are normalising on a gradual basis in our country. These are all the fruits of the great things we are seeing as a nation now. “We want to send a message on behalf of the private sector and the traditional institution of this country that we are getting there gradually as a nation. For the first time in 20 years, the arbitrage between the parallel market and the official market has been closed completely. “It is quite evident that now our country is investor friendly. Our capital market is repositioned for a better inflow of foreign investment. Also, many Nigerian entrepreneurs that are here are looking forward to connecting with their associates from Kazakhstan as well,” he stated. Ooni also noted that last year’s meeting between Tinubu and his Kazakhstan counterpart birthed the current bilateral relationship between the two countries. Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Kazakhstan Foreign Affairs, Alibek Kuantyrov, praised the monarch for agreeing to host his delegation at the maiden edition of their bilateral meeting. While stating his country is an enclave of only 20 million people, Kuantyrov noted that over 90 per cent of the population doesn’t use cash in their transactions. The envoy urged the Nigerian government to consider opening an embassy in Kazakhstan to facilitate the ease of doing business with the first African country. “Our goal is how to promote food security for the whole region of Central Asia and other countries in our continent. It was Kazakhstan that established the Organisation of Islamic Food Security. More than 40 countries are now members of this organisation. “Unfortunately, Kazakhstan doesn’t yet have an embassy here in Nigeria, just as you don’t have one in our country. We are hoping Nigeria will open one soon. That is also why our delegation is here. So we will also be discussing how to fast-track our diplomatic arrangements and other logistics,” he added. https://tribuneonlineng.com/minister-commends-tinubu-for-n200bn-intervention-in-agricultural-sector/ Mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala nlfpmod seun Fergie001 |

Ogun State, Nigeria’s top investment destination, is set to reap huge benefits as the largest protein producer in the world, JBS of Brazil, has indicated interest in investing $2.5bn in the livestock subsector of the Nigerian economy. The controlling shareholder of the company, Wesley Batista, gave this indication when officials of his firm, led by the controlling shareholder of EMN, John Coumantaros, visited the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Sunday. Mr. Batista, who described Nigeria as the hub of Africa with the largest population, noted the enormous potentials that exist in the country in terms of human and natural resources, and said they were ready to bring their knowledge and expertise in the area of livestock to bear in the nation’s economy. He said: “We have been talking and learning about Nigeria. We had the privilege to meet the Nigerian delegation in Brazil when President Bola Tinubu visited our country. We see Nigeria as the hub of Africa with a very large population. “Though it is our first time in Nigeria, we feel that we have a lot of similarities between Brazil and Nigeria. We have a very good impression so far about Nigeria and Nigerians. “We are serious about coming to Nigeria to invest in beef, pork, chicken, among others. We see growth prospects in Nigeria and what Nigerian leaders are doing in encouraging investors to come and make significant investments here. We can bring our knowledge and expertise to bear in Nigeria’s economy.” Giving a brief background of the company, Mr Batista disclosed that his company started in 1953 with slaughtering one cow per day and grew to 600 heads of cattle in one beef plant per day in 1957, becoming the largest beef player in Brazil in the 1990s. “In the beginning of 2000, we started looking for opportunities to go beyond Brazil, and in 2005, we started in Argentina, and in 2007, we went to the United States and Australia. JBS is our biggest business under our holding company,” he added. Mr Batista said the organization currently has a revenue of about $75bn and 280,000 direct members who operate hundreds of facilities across Brazil, the USA, Mexico, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Italy, and France, among others. According to the Controlling Shareholder, the company processes 80,000 herds of cattle, 15 million chickens, about 25,000 herds of lamb per day, and also produces packaged products like sausages and bacon, while it also holds interests in other sectors like energy, the paper-producing industry, banking and finance, as well as soap and toiletries. Giving a brief about Ogun State in an address titled, “Unlocking the Future of Livestock Processing and Other Opportunities,” Governor Abiodun said the state, with more than 16,000 square kilometers, offers an ideal location for investments as it provides unique connections to the 17 southern states as well as the northern parts of the country. “We have provided, in terms of infrastructure, 1,000 kilometers of highways and the best-constructed airport in Nigeria, specially dedicated to agro imports and exports. “We are number one in non-oil, as two- thirds of the state sits on limestone. Our state is the third-largest producer of cement in Africa, trailing behind Morocco, which is second, and Egypt, which is first. “The state also has gold, silica, bitumen, and others which are too numerous to mention. We have gas reticulation more than any other state. There are two major gas pipelines that crisscross our state,” he stated. Governor Abiodun noted that Ogun is going into power generation and distribution, assuring that industries and companies that operate in the State would have access to the cheapest power supply in the country. On the acquisition of land, the governor said it has been made seamless as land title documents would be made ready within 30 days, assuring that his administration has invested significantly in security to guarantee the safety of lives and properties of those who live and work in the State. While assuring that his administration would collaborate with the government of President Bola Tinubu to ensure food sufficiency and security, Governor Abiodun said efforts would be made to reduce food scarcity and inflation in the state and country. He lauded the company for rising from humble beginnings to become the largest protein producer in the world, saying his administration is looking forward to seeing the company establish itself in the State. The leader of the delegation, John Coumantaros, in his remarks, applauded the governor for opening up Ogun in the area of infrastructure, which he noted has pushed up investments and brought more development to the State. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/ssouth-west/776364-ogun-state-to-benefit-as-worlds-largest-protein-producer-invests-2-5bn-in-nigeria.html Mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala nlfpmod seun Fergie001 https://tribuneonlineng.com/ogun-to-benefit-as-worlds-largest-protein-producer-invests-2-5bn-in-nigeria/ |
