Fine , Paul relegated speaking in tongues in chapter 14, but that's not the bone of contention. Paul made it known that you can speak in language not understand by all (1)

In Chap 13, he mentioned tongues of men and that of angel. Is tongue of men also an hyperbole? (2)

Last Bullet: For anyone who speaks in tongues speak unto God.....they utter mysteries by the Spirit "Mysteries by the spirit is not a language of man" . Hence this validated tongues of angel
(3)

I noted/numbered some points in your write-up, and see my reaction below

1. Each time Paul talked about speaking in tongues here, he draws attention to the fact that if it is not interpreted it is unprofitable to anybody including to the individual speaking it either to himself or to the Church. So Paul made it known that you can speak in language not understood by all you say, but he put in it clear perspectives
a. Paul did say that when you pray in tongues, while your spirit is edified...it is not profitable to your understanding
1 Corinthians 14:14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.…
I do not believe Paul validated speaking in tongues that will be useless to the Church...
18I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19But in the church, I would rather speak five coherent words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.…
... My take is that you can be Spirit-Gifted with tongues, but it is less of a profit to you (your understanding) as an individual if your tongues cannot be interpreted, not to talk of to the Church.

2. The connection of tongues of men and that of Angels is an hyperbole. It simply depicts a 2 extremities of understanding of Languages. It does not literarily mean there is "Tongues of Angels"

3. Mysteries by the Spirit; you're just cutting things in part and driving out of context. verse2 that you lifted part of in Isolation connects tightly to next 3 verses- Yes speaks onto God....but it is useless to the persons understanding neither is it any useful to the Church.

I do not totally agree with Mummy GO, neither do I think you are all too correct either. I don't like scriptures lifted in or out of context.... See my reactions in blue....

phemmyfour:
She's is a joke

1 Cor 13:1
1If I speak in the tongues a of men or of angels - ...the use of the term "tongues of Angels" here is hyperbole, is more like a heighted comparison to make a point, just like saying "rained cats and dogs, or like saying I'm so happy you can ride a horse in my belly ". The real focus of this verse almost lost here is the part you did not put i.e. "..but have not love...." This verse is simply telling us that at the greatest height of speaking in tongues, without love, it is a useless venture

1Cor 14:2

2For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit
It is the same wrong-context I see here as well. In this passage Paul practically relegated speaking in tongues on the order of importance of Spiritual gifts and usefulness to the Church. He was actually telling them here that Prophesy is more important and useful to the Church as a collective than speaking in tongues which is only edifying to the individual. Speaking in tongues becomes useful to the larger congregation if it is interpreted. I quoted here verses 1-5
Earnestly pursue love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. 2For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3. But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, encouragement, and comfort. The one who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but the one who prophesies edifies the church. I wish that all of you could speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets so that the church may be edified.………

A Corona's Inquest is not a criminal investigation and never equated to a Police investigation. It is simply an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding a death so that the death can be appropriately registered. So the Dowen ex-staff cannot be invited on any basis not directly related to the dead body. As you can see it is the pathologists that a mainly speakibg at the inquest.

Autopsy has its uses in murder investigations but it is beong overflogged here for clearly the wrong purposes. Dr. Soyemi who conducted the second autopsy gave evidence at the inquest that there was blackish substance found in the stomach of the boy but they refused to test the substance because allegedly LASUTH lacked appropriate facilities. Yet he was surprisingly eager to condemn the first autopsy's report of death by chemical intoxication on the basis that the throat and airways where not opened but didn't volunteer whether he opened them in his autopsy and what he found. At least the blackish substance would have entered the body through any of these points.

In fact the presence of the black susbtance casts suspicions on the Police statement that there were no findings in the oesophagus and stomach compatible with chemical intoxication based on the second autopsy report!

For me, the fact that an earlier report had concluded on chemical intoxication made it mandatory to test the blackish substance to clear all doubts. This is even more important when the parents of the boy claimed he was fed engine oil or some other substance. To resort to any other tactic to debunk the first autopsy while clearly the second autopsy is not 100% thorough is trying to play on the intelligence of the people.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/punchng.com/oromoni-black-substance-found-in-victims-intestine-lasuth-lacks-testing-lab-says-pathologist/%3famp

1. I know Corona inquest is not tantamount to Police investigation...but in this case, Corona inquest came about at the insistence of the Oromoni's after Police investigation supervised by the then Lagos State Commissioner of Police Rtd. AIG Hakeem Odumosu. Odumosu gave a detailed picture of the Police investigation, suspects questioned (accused boys, Teacher, House Masters, some other staff and students) and reliance on 2 (Warri & Lagos) test which bears the same outcome. I will imagine that there were 3 tests, wherein the Pathologist in Warri realising the gravity of issue at hand "updated" his report, cos what the Oromoni's released to social media was the one that said toxic substance was found, the report sent to the police said no toxic substance was found.

2. So Dr. Soyemi conducted his autopsy.... Let's look at the logic of his hypothesis, his examination and his final outcome. There are standard checks to determine the existence of toxins in the system - oesophagus, lungs, heart weight etc which he explained. It stands to reason that if toxins were not found in the expected path of travel to the stomach, if toxins was not found in organs that would absorb it walls of stomach, Liver and kidney, then it can be posited with a very high level of probability the unlikelihood of toxic substances in the boy's body....

3. So black substance was found in his stomach, which was actually reported. I agree that at this stage the substance be sent overseas for testing to clear all doubt.. but you cannot castigate Dr. Soyemi here. He did not refuse to test the black substance. The lab to test the substance had been burnt by misguided "Soro-Soke" youths. It is standard practice that Doctors will send such to labs....but alas there is no lab of that nature in West Africa.

4. Dr. Soyemi is within his right to condemn the shoddy job of the previous pathologist. From his evidence it only stands logic on the head that a pathology report will come to conclusions that it at variance with recognized symptoms and prognosis. How can his report conclude toxic substance as the cause of death, and his vital organs which should have changed colour or form as a result of the contamination did not change?

5. Finally, let the blackish substance be tested.... a conclusion of this issue should done sooner so we all move on from this ....

This is the report from your preferred Coroner. The one that did a "professional" job right ??

Ask him why he refused to test the blackish substance found in Sylvester's body. He was able to mutilate and cut up the body so adeptly but couldn't run even a pH test on that fluid.

I told you guys that I received firsthand account from his fellow students that at least this boy was severely beaten with possibility of poisoning.

Maybe your relationship with the suspects and their families, or the complicity of yourselves and children in cases like this has eroded your conscience.
I repeat, It will reach you before the year runs out. Bank on that.

First of you must be daft. What is the impact of your curses? You think you're conversing with kid-brained folks like you? You're just venting idiotic rants that beggars logic.

So a black substance was found in his stomach, which was not tested does that automatically translate to toxic substance? When the pathology had laid out sequential steps and also features used to detect toxic substance in a toxicology process, and all these conditions is not the case in the boy's organ.

Your willful ignorance is not only embarrassing but downright idiotic. You cannot engage in an intellectual argument... you're cursing. You think you're with your foolish lots where you win arguments with cursing the most?

So, Sylvester became deranged to hallucinate a narrative because of football injury.

Continue, I assure you, this cup will not Passover you this year. if you're are justified may you come out safe if not take my condolences.

Bros,

All the unnecessary energy you're venting, cursing needlessly make you come out as someone refusing to see to reason. What makes the first examination unthorough and unprofessional you ask? After it had been stated in the report on the first page of this thread? or you refused to read?

He was led in evidence by Dr Jide Martins, the Director of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).

“I observed the first autopsy was not properly done. All the things that were not properly done were documented in my report.

“At the first autopsy, the pathologist never opened the oesophagus (the food pipe). He also did not open the trachea (air pipe). These are vital things he should not have left out.

“The conclusion in his report was chemical intoxication. For one to be intoxicated with a chemical, that chemical has to pass through the food path.

“If one does not open the food path, one cannot talk about chemical intoxication. The chemical that should be injurious to one should pass through the oesophagus.

“It should not have been anything near chemical intoxication if it did not pass through the oesophagus,” Soyemi said. The witness said further that the pathologist who conducted the first autopsy in Warri, Delta, did not look into the lungs of the deceased and also did not detach the heart from the lungs as was the standard practice.

“If he had done that and weighed the lungs, the weight alone would have told him that something was wrong with the lungs.

“Your honour, these are a few of the things he did not do. I will say that he did a botched autopsy. Your honour, this is the cause of the controversy concerning this case,” Soyemi said.

While the law is that accussed people are innocent until proven guilty, the information from various sources including ex-staff of Dowen on the issue of bullying shows that it requires further investigation by the Police.

To simply try to equate autopsy result to the solution of an alleged murder case and bullying is shoddy work at its best. There are various ways to kill people that the autopsy would easily attribute to normal death and yet the cases are murder.

How did a football injury within days become a serious generalized infection? Has the deceased been a subject of bullying at Dowen has alleged? Are there student cults at Dowen? Where all relevant parties including students questioned thoroughly? All these are questions raised that we need answers to and not the singular focus on autopsy results. The Police really did a shoddy job.

These your submission are just overtly emotional and lacking in substance

1. Information from an Ex-Staff of Dowen who did not show up in investigation and at Corona's inquest to give evidence? Is the Corona to rely on Whatsapp video conversation of emotional women and not fact-based evidence?
2. The autopsy report served 2 purposes in this context. (1) It is the standard and legal reference for establishing cause of death. (2) It is the only veritable way to determine that what was alleged (Bully = Blunt Force Trauma) and( Poisonous substances= Toxins). Even when you take evidence from people who describes how he was beating, and such cannot be seen on the body to the extent that pathologist can certify it, then it is not evidenced.
3. Football injuries can indeed lead to infection. Basic knowledge of treatment tells you that when flesh is opened through irritation, abrasion or cuts, you administer antiseptic to clean it flesh almost immediately to prevent bacterial infection. If the body immunity does not attack the bacteria, it leads to fatality
4. On the Cult issue, the Police investigated that and led to a dead end. The Police did mention in their investigation that there was no evidence of cultism, no incisions, no tatoos or any other evidence to back that allegation.

Any public outry on this case should be for justice for DOWEN boys now.... Perhaps only medical people see it clearly

MDCN in her regulatory role is the best person's to step into this case cos it's clear to all the first pathologist that was a quack had a strong role to play in the wrong detention of juveniles for something as grevious as a murder charge. How did that even happen.Only a coroner's autopsy should have been allowed for the purpose of their detention but I guess Lagos was afraid of public opinion

I'll try and explain for non medical person's here. You can not say there was signs of aspiration poisoning from things in his stomach due to something swallowed if you did not check in lay men's terms ( the food pipe)

The first thing any clinical student in gastric surgery in Nigeria knows this because Nigerians for some odd reason drink diverse corrosive substances in half hearted protest attempts or by accident.

The first thing it does. Is burn the oesophagus in a chemical poisoning before it affects the tougher overprotected stomach. Many times and in most of the cases the oesophagus( food pipe )is severely affected but not the stomach. So imagine an autopsy that concludes the findings in the stomach is from swallowing without looking at the affect on the oesophagus?

His autopsy was also not recorded? Why? No pictures at the least? If there are he needs to explain himself clearly to a panel. This pathologist and the first Dr that saw this student where lax in their business very lax.

It had far reaching consequences. And the fact that those Drs are still clinging to self survival at the cost of the future of these little kids who always have to explain in future that they had been tried sometime in the past for a murder case is evil. Some of the kids were not even there on said day (3 out of 5)

DOWEN boys must be cleared of that allegation and the state and police pay for it's incompetence. Those Drs must be stripped of their certificates for a period of time they are both a hazard to society

And lastly anyone still dragging DOWEN and DOWEN boy for murder now is complicit. If you have kids fear God

From just reading the report of the Lagos State Pathologist, I can conclude that Sylvester Oromoniyi died from biological intoxication and not chemical intoxication.
Here are the proof from the report;

The Septicaemia must have entered the bloodstream through the oesophagus and stomach. This must have been from the liquid he was alleged to have been forced to drink. This was probably why the infection affected all the vital organs so fast.

Evidence the school and parents were treating the wrong diagnosis. If they had started treating the boy for acute and aggressive bacterial infection (Septicaemia), Sylvester would certainly have survived.

Instead the school and parents were treating for orthopedic injuries. They were massaging the body of Sylvester and giving pain relievers.

Further evidence there was no evidence of bone injury. All the ankle abrasions were as a result of aggressive massaging.

My conclusion
Sylvester was beaten and bullied, but the physical beatings did not kill him. It was the liquid he was forced to drink. Now since our we don't have labs in Nigeria that can carry out a complete toxicology examination and the body and all organs had been tampered with coupled with cover ups from all those involved, it will be impossible to prove Sylvester Oromoniyi was murdered. Biological intoxication is much more difficult to prove that chemical intoxication. You have to determine exactly how the biological agents were introduced into the bloodstream.

This has got to be the lamest and dumbest analysis of a case in history. It is worse than cut and paste.... worse still it is a misrepresentation of the misrepresented facts.

You see one thing I hate about Nigeria, secrecy is too much, something happened to the boy in the school which led to him falling sick and died, why are they not investigating the cause of what led to him falling sick based on events that took place in the school, the boy has friends, till date nobody has heard any testimonies from his friends and other school children in the school, secrecy is too much to be released to the public, there is no way witnesses would not have been in place during such event, but then this is NIGERIA

The same way, herdsmen will attack a village and police arrests the herdsmen, they find out who sent them, secrecy starts:
POLICE- You know the person involved in this case is the brother to the uncle of the inlaw to the sister of the wife of the president, we cannot divulge such information to the public, this is national security issue...

They are released to continue their havoc, This is not national security, this is Nigeria...

Except you want to work towards a preconceived answer, there is nothing you put up there that the police did not do in investigation. They invited the boys in question, investigated the teachers and students, watched CCTV recordings. They also relied on Pathology and Toxicology report....which showed there was no evidence of blunt force attack neither was their toxic substances in his system.

The problem with many of us is that we would have followed the herd in making conclusions instead of waiting for the outcome of an evidence-based investigation...

Interesting. I lived in Owutu myself in the late 90s to early 00s.
Was living close to Inglewood. Don't know if you know the school.

I think I have a fair idea.... my first day moving into Ikorodu, someone bashed my car from behind. Na so we carry ourselves to Owutu Police Station...

Hello Nairalanders.
It's A Long Read But Please Bear With Me

Am the only child, Am A Boy,my mom died when I was 3 years and am the only child.so it's been only me and dad since and his girlfriends..

Recently I started smoking, He noticed it..My dad too smokes but only cigarette,He has been smoking past a Decade Now But He looks very Healthy And Chubby Too So You won't Know He Smokes Unless Your Saw Him smoking.

So He told Me To Stop Smoking,And He Was Angry With Me For A Week plus,Later The Anger Reduced..He Taught I Smoked Only Cigarette but I Smoke Both cigar and Arizona Weed,Jus those Two.i Don't Take alcohol.
I Stopped Smoking Though,It Was on Saturday Being Feb 4,That I Relapsed,I Smoked A.Z,So My Dad And Her Current Girlfriend Came Back,She went To The Backyard And Saw the Aches and The Brown Rizzla..Then she went and Told My Dad,My Dad Came Into My Room And Started Saying Plenty Things,Lastly He told me To Leave His House Tomorrow Being Sunday Feb 05. He then left My Room, I Was Shocked,I Didn't What To Do Or Say To Him

So in The Morning I went Out To Buy Something,When I Came Back He Locked The Back Door From inside,So I Couldn't Open It With My Keys.I Knocked And Told Him It Was Me,He Told Me To Go Back To Where I Come From And i Should Not Knock Ever Again. This Made Angry,He Didn't Even Give Me The Chance To Apologize,I Used Vex And Told Him Oya Let Me Carry My Property,He Said He Will Throw it For Me,That He Is Already Packing My Belongings,Few Minutes Later He Threw It for Me,I Was Down So He Threw It From Up...So I Left to Stay With a Friend in another State.

So My Question Now Is what My Father Did The Right thing? My Telling Me To Leave His House Cos I smoke, Am 19 Years Of Age, I Will be 20 This Year.I heard too Many ulcers and Helicobacter pylori Which Leads To Stomach Cancer,Yet He Told Me To Leave, He Was The Buying Medicine For Me But He Knows The Ulcer And Helicobacter pylori Hasn't Healed Final. He Knows I Don't Have Money To Fend For Myself Yet,i Always Go To His Shop To Help Him With His business.

What He Did By Telling Me To Leave Is It Right?I Don't SMOKE Outside,I only SMOKE In Our Flat,Cos I Don't Want People To Know I SmokE,My Dad Will be Ashamed When People Tell Him I Smoke ,He is a Very Popular Man Here..

Today I Chatted Him And Told Him Am Sorry For My actions,The First Thing He Told Me Was (you will never see good In your life)..I Didn't Mind Though The Curse though, I Begged Him,And He Told Me To Come Back,But Am Really Not Happy With Him,What if I Have Accident?what if I was Kidnapped? He didn't Think Of Those ones instead He sent Me Parking, I Have always Be A Good son which he tells me Frequently,I don't give him Headache.Just Only That Smoke

Even Though He Told Me To Come Back Am Still annoyed With Him,Instead of Him to Help Me To Stop ,He Told Me To Leave His House And Go continue Smoking. Those Words Hurt Me....

Should I Go back To Him And Start Planing To Save Money And Relocate?Cos I don't Have a Dime Now,And My ulcer Hasn't Healed Complete...I haven't even Eaten Good Food since yesterday,Just one okpa
...
My Main Question Are (Did My Dad Do The Right Thing By Telling Me To Leave,Should I Go Back To Stay With Him??Or should I Stay Here At My friend Place and start Hustling For Myself??

Please Moderators Should help Move to Front page,Am in Deep confusion Now.Thanks

Gawd! what an entitlement mentality!

The moment you turned 18, you became a full-fledged adult by law, and capable of fending for yourself. If you will not listen to your Dad's instructions, then he has the right to throw you out. That you have ulcers and stuff not withstanding.... you can as well go and work and earn money to treat it.

If you continue on this path, you will not only incur your father's curse but also end up in waste....

Firstly I will have to fault that priest.

he didn't act in wisdom. This is something he should have asked the holy spirit to help him navigate. Not to come on the altar and start ranting.

But this is not an igbo thing, it happens in many churches.

Something similar happened in a church I attended that was made up of many Yorubas, Yoruba songs dominated but the pastor a yoruba man changed it. Now songs from other languages are being sang.

Even songs from minority tribes,
and everybody sings along and enjoys the service.

This is why I like Yorubas very accommodating people, accommodate other tribes and their cultures and sounds.

I like a diverse church but you can achieve it without coming off as an undiplomatic person.

except if he has tried previously to introduce a little mix into the church singing and the igbos refused, that doesn't justify this his overreaction.

NOW THE CHURCH IS DIVIDED.

I was in the Choir in my young days and was a lead singer in the Choir band. I remember some Igbos aunties chatted me up one day that I don't sing Igbo songs at all, I only sing English and Yoruba songs. I told them I was afraid of bastardizing the songs as I don't speak Igbo and some songs I know the tunes I mess up the lyrics. They encouraged me to learn, I got some tapes and learnt. I love the fact that many of the Igbo songs I listened to on tapes had a great blend of Tenor and Bass that makes it sound like Zulu songs.....

I am forced to comment. I am not saying what this priest has done is right but I can understand a bit of what he is saying. Banning is the solution rather ways to foster harmony among all tribes in the church should be sought for.

I for one, I am a catholic but going to church in Lagos has been very discouraging. I have attended a mass where the priest was practically giving sermon in Igbo. Most priest especially those from the East forget the term universal when they mount the pulpit. It’s actually discouraging when at a mass all the Igbo people are laughing over what a priest has said and you just sit there lost. If you are not Igbo sometimes going for mass is no use. Just find the readings and stay at home because you won’t enjoy mass. I am not Yoruba either but I know of a church that has Yoruba mass and others in English. So maybe having an Igbo mass strictly for igbos would help.

I agree with you. The Revd. Father being young and impulsive could have gone about it the wrong way. I see that many at times churches are using platforms which ordinarily should have served to unite the body of Christ to divide itself. I was driving along LASU-Iba road one day and I saw a sign-board "XXY IGBO-Anglican Church" I was like for Christ's sakes what is the meaning of this? If we go by the mantra Christ above all, then we will be guided

I am careful not to base by judgment of the situation of a potentially skewed reportage of the media....

Even though the beauty of worship is seen in our local dialects... but reversal of it is despicable and in bad taste. Some churches being mere association of ethic collectives and village meetings rather than true house of God. Positions and service functions ends up becoming guided by ethnicity and the place of God is relegated.... trust me such churches become spiritually stagnant...

I am an Anglican. I lived in Ikorodu till 2010. I remember when our church newly started... the then Bishop Adebiyi had cases of churches some churches with ethinic-laced challenges which was affecting its growth. He came up with creative solution - All churches stated from year 2000 upwards will conduct services in English and not any Nigerian language. Prayers and songs could be sung in any language....

My Church St. Paul's Owutu grew fast, we had a well blended congregation and we were more like family. Any time I visit Ikorodu and the church, I feel at home with people of all races, peoples, ethnicity and colours. This is what Jesus wants...

I want to give the Revd. Father a benefit of doubt that this is a typical problem he was trying to solve...

PS: If this was the "offense" does it warrant suspension? or is there something else?
