The World Health Organisation (WHO) said they have recorded 62 Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) during this latest outbreak, with 38 confirmations and 27 deaths
The Deputy Director-General for Emergency Preparedness and Response of WHO, Peter Salama, reported in Geneva that was “very strong progress” in response to the Ebola outbreak in the DRC, one month after the start of the disease.
He said that the first phase – protecting urban centres and towns – “has gone well, and we can be cautiously optimistic.”
“There have been 62 Ebola cases in the DRC during this latest outbreak, with 38 confirmations and 27 deaths.
“The latest case, confirmed on Thursday, was in the remote Iboko health zone in the northwest, an indication that the outbreak is ongoing, he said.

Mr Salama, who just returned from a two-day visit to the DRC said: “There’s been very strong progress in the outbreak response, particularly in relation to two of the initial three sites: Mbandaka and Bikoro”.

JOHESU: NMA Seek Role In Negotiating Health Workers’ Demands

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has commended the decision by other health workers under the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) to shelve thier nationwide strike after six weeks.

While describing themselves ‘leaders of the health sector’, the doctors also demanded to play a part in the negotiation of JOHESU’s demands.

JOHESU, a body of all other health workers except doctors, last Thursday suspended its strike which crippled services across public hospitals in the country and left millions without care.

The NMA in a statement Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Obitade Obimakinde, asked the government to involve them in the negotiations.

“The NMA wishes to reiterate that the health sector operates as a team with the Doctors as the leaders to utmost benefit of the patients. NMA is therefore unapologetically committed to a good and harmonious relationship among the team members.

“The NMA also welcome the alternative dispute resolution [ADR] as a means of resolving the crisis but insist that no holistic, meaningful and long-lasting resolution can be made without the input of all the team members especially the NMA.

“It is in this vein that we call on the government and the National Industrial Court of Nigeria [NICN] to involve the NMA in the ongoing NICN midwifed ADR”, the statement read.

The Snake Bite Treatment Centre, Kaltungo in Gombe, has alerted resident in the state particularly farmers, to be vigilant, due to the increased number of cases recorded in the hospital.

Dr Abubakar Balla, the Head of the centre, said in Kaltungo on Monday that 70 snake bite patients were on admission in the hospital.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, is set to meet with the leadership of the health workers’ union on Monday.

A statement issued on Sunday by the Media Office of the President of the Senate said the meeting would hold in Saraki’s office at 3pm.

Last week, Saraki began his mediation between the government and JOHESU over the ongoing strike action by the workers, which has crippled Nigeria’s public health care facilities for the past 40 days.
