Edo State Government will engage at least 7,000 people within two weeks and construct no less than 3,000 kilometers of roads across the 3 senatorial districts in the space of three years, it emerged on Thursday.



This was as Governor Godwin Obaseki inspected newly reconstructed and rehabilitated roads including Ibiwe, Wire, TV, Plymouth and Ehiaekpen Roads in Benin metropolis recently.

A statement from the office of Mr John Mayaki, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor hinted that the Obaseki-led administration had concluded plans to construct the roads and that no less than 7,000 people, who have already registered in the ongoing Edo jobs initiative would be engaged in public works in a couple of weeks.

Meanwhile, the statement continued that Governor Obaseki is poised to fulfil the electoral campaign promises he made to the people of the state, especially in the area of road construction and rehabilitation.
He, however, continued that the cooperation of the people is the greatest asset the governor’s administration has enjoyed and will continue to enjoy – even in the midst of economic downturn – as they wait patiently for this government to deliver.

The teeming viewers of the Globacom-sponsored TV Drama Series, Professor Johnbull, will this Tuesday be treated to another exciting moment as the latest episode of the Series exposes the follies of extravagant ceremonies in the society.

In the new episode entitled Expensive Ceremonies and billed for airing on NTA Network, NTA International on DSTV Channel 251 and NTA on StarTimes at 8.30 p.m., the sententious scholar, Professor Johnbull, acted by a top Nollywood star, Kanayo O. Kanayo, upbraids the spendthrift tendencies of people who go overboard while celebrating various milestones.

The Executive Producer of the sitcom said in a statement in Lagos on Monday that “Expensive Ceremonies, the latest episode of Professor Johnbull, is not just comical but touchy as it depicts in a very sublime manner, the vanity is spending a fortune on social ceremonies and the attendant holes such tendencies create in the pockets of the celebrants”.

“We cannot deny the fact that spending lavishly on ceremonies is more or less a given culture in the country. The ceremonies are in legion: birthday bash, wedding, naming, funeral, house warming, freedom parties and what have you. With the prevailing economic situation, no time can be more apt than now to sound a note of caution to all to be circumspect in the way they spend money on these ceremonies and that is exactly what Expensive Ceremonies intends to achieve”, the statement added.



Besides the regulars of the sitcom such as Ufoma (Bimbo Akintola), Churchill (Jnr. Pope Odonwodo), Flash (Stephen Odimgbe) and Olaniyi (Yomi Fash-Lanso), two prominent entertainers: Gordons, an ace comedian and Chika Okpala aka Zebrudayah, the darling of TV Operas in the ‘70s, also make cameo appearances in the episode.

After watching the humourous episode, viewers will be primed to determine what constitutes expensive ceremonies. Other issues waiting to be determined at the end of the episode include: ‘who is impressed by expensive ceremonies? Should a man spend what he earns in a year on one ceremony that happens in a day? Does an expensive wedding party guarantee a successful married life? Is expensive ceremony an African thing?’

The inclusion of Governor Godwin Obaseki among prominent Nigerians with certificate scandals as published in the March 27, 2017 edition of Punch Newspaper is itself scandalous. Any controversy, for the period it may have existed, did not rise above the level of hearsay, street gossip and soft-sell online newspapers.

It is highly displeasing, troubling, and quite unfair to the governor’s person and image to categorise him among those who have had ‘scandals’ on account of the often questionable reports from the opposition party.

Punch Newspaper has distinguished itself with excellent reportage over the years, and does not need to play to the gallery of unverifiable reports by casting doubts over the certification of Governor Obaseki’s education.



It would be recalled that in the build-up to the 2017 Edo governorship election, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, as required by the Electoral Act 2010 as amended for a candidate with missing proof of academic qualifications, found it necessary to swear an affidavit declaring his certificates missing to the best of his knowledge.

He also explained that he had actually had no cause to look for them for 25 years prior to that time, but proceeded to furnish the public and the electoral body with existing photocopies, which were duly signed and validly stamped by the issuing institutions.

However, those rightly threatened by his profile and educational attainments, which stood in sharp contrast to those of their own candidates for the same election, chose to seek refuge in deliberate misrepresentation of the contents of the affidavit until the governor later produced the original copies.

It remains public knowledge that the subsequently tendered the original copies and, by so doing, put the vilifying affair to bed.

To clear all doubts again, it would be recalled that he had his primary education at St. Matthews Anglican Primary School and attended Eghosa Anglican Grammar School, both in Benin City, before he proceeded to the University of Ibadan, where he bagged a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics.

Mr. Godwin Obaseki thereafter did his National Youths Service Corps primary assignment in Jos, Plateau state.

He subsequently proceeded to the prestigious Ivy League Columbia University and Pace University, both in New York, and bagged an MBA in Finance and International Business respectively.

The governor is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Stock Brokers, Nigeria and an Alumnus of the Lagos Business School Chief Executive Program.
