Politics / “my Husband Became President Because He Never Gave Up” – Aisha Buhari by MIGNOWAP(m): 5:32pm On Feb 23, 2017 |
The wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has advised Nigerians to emulate her husband by never giving up on their dreams and aspirations. She said her husband became Nigeria’s president in 2015 due to his doggedness, persistence and compassion for the masses. She said this in Abeokuta on Tuesday in Abeokuta during the launch of a book titled, “Buhari vs Yar’Adua: Facing the future,” written by a Special Assistant on Media to the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Opeyemi Soyombo. The First Lady was represented by the wife of the Ogun State governor, Dr Olufunso Amosun. She commended the efforts of the author, who documented the legal struggles of her husband in the 2007 election petition challenging the victory of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua. Despite Buhari’s legal struggles which saw him moving to Court of Appeal and to the Supreme Court trying to prove that he won the 2007 presidential election, he lost the case. But he never gave up his presidential ambition. Mrs Buhari noted that the importance of record keeping or documentation could not be over-emphasised because without it history would be distorted. She said there were lots of lessons to learn from the life of President Buhari who contested the presidential election consecutively four times before he eventually won in 2015. She said, “There are lots of lessons to learn from the life of President Muhammadu Buhari, most especially his doggedness and compassion for the masses. President Buhari contested presidential election consecutively four times before he eventually won in 2015. “His victory has paid off considering his passion for helping the masses and most importantly the successes recorded in the anti-corruption war of his government. “I commend the efforts of the writer for documenting the Presidential Election suit between the candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and President Umaru Yar’Adua of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2007. “This shows that the author has been following with keen interest elections held in the country and the petitions arising from them. In most recent shared views and writings on human and societal development, the investment made on other people gives tremendous yields; thus the facts and authenticity of the book are invaluable.” The chairman of the occasion, who’s a retired judge of the Ogun State High Court, Justice Ademola Bakre, said Nigerians must all work for a better future of Nigeria. While he lamented the rot in the country’s judiciary, he warned against interference and undue pressure in the affairs of judges. He said, “I want to appeal that Nigerians should allow the judges to do their job, people should stop putting unnecessary pressure on them.” Speaking with journalists after the launch, the author said he was motivated to write the 179-page book, which was divided into seven chapters, to forestall election rigging in the future in Nigeria. Soyombo noted that Buhari was short-changed in the 2007 presidential election, adding that the book would “ensure that we have credible, free and fair elections and to ensure that the judiciary on no account, either by design or default, would endorse electoral robbery.”

Sports / This Is Why Olympians Bite Their Medals by MIGNOWAP(m): 6:21am On Sep 08, 2016 |
The Olympics are one of the most exciting global events to take place, and they only come around every 4 years. Some of the traditions associated with the Olympics are:*.The torch relay.*.It is lit in Greece and travels to wherever the games are being held, this tradition began in 1936.*.Athletes biting their medals for photos when they win. Olympians from all countries that win a medal take a photo biting it, which has prompted people to question why that is.It is a tradition that spans cultures and countries–pretty much anyone that has won a medal has a photo taken with them biting it.Olympians have been biting their medals for decades now. Take this Great Britain track and field team, taking a big chomp out of their medals, back in 1991.These days the athletes bite their medals because the photographers ask them to when they are doing press after their competitions. But it has actually been a tradition for a very long time, most athletes that do it may not even realize where the tradition originated from.It began with only gold medal winners biting their medal. Up until 1912 the gold medals were solid gold. Gold is a soft metal so when you bite into it, your teeth will leave a mark if it’s pure. It was a way for athletes to make sure it was real gold.

Politics / We Are Endangered Species, Pensioners Tell Buhari by MIGNOWAP(m): 4:48pm On Sep 07, 2016 |
CALABAR – PENSIONERS have cried out to President Muhammadu Buhari to save their souls from the pains of poverty following non-payment of their pension arrears which have accumulated for several months. Making the cry yesterday in Calabar, President of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, Dr AbelAfolayan while addressing journalists listed twelve areas where pensioners have been subjected to severe difficulties which need to be addressed urgently by the President to save the souls of members. Dr Afolayan listed those areas to include non-compliance with constitutional provision by the yearly review of 5% pension, non harmonisation of old and new pensions, arbitrary deductions from pensions, non remittance of federal government counterpart funding into local government pension fund among others. “Pension arrears have piled up over the years during the regimes of past administrations with ‘mountains of complaint” forms submitted by pensioners and inherited by Pension Transitional Arrangements Directorate which still lie unattended to for several years”. The NUP President who was represented by Elder Tubonimi Sukuyep, the National Vice President South- South of the NUP said the government has not complied with the annual review of pension as stipulated by the Constitution. “1999 Constitution of Nigeria stipulates that pensionsshall be reviewed every five years or together with any Federal Civil Service salary reviews whichever is earlier; the last pension review was in July 2010, the pensioners are therefore eagerly waiting for the implementation of the review in compliance with the Constitution”. The pensioners President also complained of arbitrary deductions from stipends of members which is negatively impacting on their welfare because their finances are being severely affected. “We do not pay tax, as pension is tax free therefore our rightful entitlement should be 53.4% but as at now only 33% approved for our members are in arrears of thirty months”. They also complained of non-payment of death benefits to next of kins of deceased pensioners which is subjecting the families of deceased pensioners to unnecessary difficulties and hardships. “We would humbly like to plead that death benefits of deceased pensioners should be paid withoutany further delay”. |

Computers / Meet Ime Archibong; The Nigerian Who Runs Things @facebook by MIGNOWAP(m): 6:41am On Sep 07, 2016 |
Looking at Facebook’s Director of Strategic Partnerships, Ime Archibong, one sees the figure of a Hollywood honcho; the type whokeeps you glued to the tube in a box office thriller-crime movie. With his huge, tall frame sitting ona well built macho body, Archibong could have passed for another Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sylvester Stallion of Rambo fame. The difference, however, is that Archibong plies his trade in Silicon Valley and not in Hollywood. He directs activities atFacebook and not on a movie set. He leads the team focused on accelerating Facebook’s product strategy by establishing partnerships, driving product integrations and unlocking new business opportunities with leading companies across multiple industries andsectors.Call him Zuckerberg’s deputy and you would not be far from the truth, because they seem to be Siamese twins in fashioning new ideas that have transformed Facebook into something much more than a social media initiative. The fact that they are beside each other at every trip and event Facebook is expected to play active part, says it all. |

Crime / Syria Conflict: IS Claims Wave Of Bombings That Kills Dozens by MIGNOWAP(m): 8:32pm On Sep 05, 2016 |
At least 40 people have been killed in
bombings in mainly government-held areas of
Syria, state media report. Four attacks took place within an hour in Tartous, Homs and in a suburb of Damascus, with one in Hassakeh, which is dominated by Kurdish forces. The deadliest incident was outside Tartous, home to a Russian naval base and in the heartland of President Bashar al-Assad's Alawite sect. The Islamic State (IS) group said it was behind the attacks. The group made the claim in a statement carried by its affiliated news agency, Amaq. 'Crowd targeted' The attacks took place between 08:00 and 09:00 (05:00-06:00 GMT) on Monday. Syria's official Sana news agency reported that 30 civilians had been killed and 45 others injured in the Tartous countryside. First, a car bomb was detonated on the Arzoneh motorway bridge, a local police source told Sana. Then, as a crowd gathered at the scene to help the wounded, a suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt, the source added. Tartous had been relatively unscathed by Syria's five-year civil war until May, when a suicide bomb attack on a bus station by IS militants left dozens dead. In the central city of Homs, four people were killed and 10 injured when a car bomb exploded at the entrance to the Bab Tadmour district, Sana reported. The governor of Homs province said the car bomb targeted a military checkpoint and that the casualties were soldiers. One person was killed in a bombing on a road in Saboura, a heavily-guarded western suburb of Damascus, a police source told Sana. Opposition activist Yousef al-Boustani said the area was home to security officers and their families and that the attack represented a major security breach. In Hassakeh, an explosives-packed motorcycle was blown up at the Marsho roundabout, killing five civilians and injuring two others, Sana said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK- based group that monitors the conflict in Syria through a network of sources, said three of the dead were Kurdish security personnel, known as the Asayish. The Kurdish Popular Protection Units (YPG) militia took near complete control of the north- eastern city last month after a week of clashes with government troops. The Syrian Observatory put the total death toll for Monday's attacks at 47. The attacks came as US President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin discussed a ceasefire deal for Syria on the sidelines of the G20 summit in China. Mr Obama said he and Mr Putin had had "productive" discussions and had agreed to continue the search for a comprehensive truce. The US president said: "Given the gaps of trust that exist, that's a tough negotiation and we haven't yet closed the gaps in a way where we think it would actually work. "But my instructions to Secretary [of State John] Kerry and Mr Putin's instructions to [Foreign Minister Sergei] Lavrov were to keep working at it over the next several days." Mr Putin said the talks were "on the right track" and that there was "some alignment" with the US. It had been hoped a deal on a ceasefire and humanitarian deliveries would be announced jointly by Mr Kerry and Mr Lavrov on Monday, but it was not forthcoming. The US is particularly concerned by the deteriorating conditions in and around Syria's second city, Aleppo, where rebel-held districts are once again under siege after government forces advanced on Sunday. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, also at the G20, said he had urged world powers to create a "safe zone" in Syria, with a "no-fly" element, that would help control the flow of migrants. Politics / Recession: Remain Focused, Don’t Be Distracted By PDP, APC Urges Buhari by MIGNOWAP(m): 6:52pm On Sep 05, 2016 |
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to remain focused despite attempts by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to distract his administration by attempted blackmail via the current recession facing the nation. The APC gave this charge to President Buhari in a statement in Abuja on Monday, by its National Secretary, Mai Mala Buni. In statement, APC said: “In reacting to the orchestrated and insensitive comments by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on the economy, the All Progressives Congress (APC) urges the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to remain focused in its bold bid to restore economic growth in the country. The Party added that “Inspite of the PDP’s orchestrated and feeble attempts to blackmail the current administration and twist facts, the reality remains that the prevailing socio-economic hardship being faced by Nigerians is a direct consequence of the mismanagement of the economy and unprecedented looting of the country’s commonwealth perpetrated under its watch. Buni said “The PDP’s attempt to turn truth on its head is fraudulent, insensitive and an insult to Nigerians. For the umpteenth time, the PDP must own up to its transgressions and apologize to Nigerians. The statement however explained that “Going forward, the urgent task before the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration is to restore the country’s battered economy back to health and all legitimate and innovative means are being employed to achieve this in the quickest possible time. Reeling out the party’s plan Buni said “Among other strategic economic agendas, diversification of the country’s economy is a priority for the administration. To this end, President Buhari is aggressively formulating and implementing policies aimed at diversifying Nigeria’s economy from oil to other sectors such as agriculture, mining and manufacturing. ”The APC assures Nigerians of the strong political will and commitment of the President Buhari administration to revive the economy and tackle the nation’s current challenges through suitable and well-thought economic policies, fiscal discipline and socio-political reforms. “The APC assures Nigerians that the administration will pull the country out of the present hardships. With the support, cooperation, patience and prayers of Nigerians, the country will reach its deserved potential under our leadership,” the statement added.

Sports / Africa Cup Of Nations Winners And Losers by MIGNOWAP(m): 6:44pm On Sep 05, 2016 |
Guinea-Bissau winning a group in which they were expected to finish last was the biggest shock of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying competition that ended at the weekend. The tiny Portuguese-speaking west African country reached the finals for the first time at the expense of former champions Zambia and Congo Brazzaville and Kenya. They will be at the 16-team tournament in Gabon during January and February while notable absentees include previous title-holders Nigeria and South Africa. AFP Sport picks five winners and five losers after an elimination process that spanned 16 months and produced 363 goals at an average of 2.5 per match. WINNERS Guinea-Bissau Have no stars and coach Baciro Cande is virtually unknown, but home and away wins over Kenya and a 3-2 triumph over Zambia in Bissau thanks to a stoppage-time Toni Silva goal secured top spot with a fixture to spare. Uganda After a string of near misses in qualifying competitions, Uganda are going to the finals for the first time since 1978 with a narrow home win over the Comoros securing one of two places reserved for the best runners-up. Senegal The only qualifiers to finish with a 100 percent record, after home and away victories over Burundi, Namibia and Niger, is testimony to the organisation and consistency coach and former star Aliou Cisse has developed. Egypt A stoppage-time equaliser from Mohamed Salah in Nigeria against the run of play proved crucial as record seven-time champions Egypt won the return match in the ‘group of death’ to halt a run of three failed qualifying campaigns. Zimbabwe A chaotic start induced by a shortage of funds forced the squad to make a 24-hour bus journey to Malawi, but they won 2-1 to set in motion a five-match unbeaten run that secured top spot while favourites Guinea flopped. LOSERS Nigeria The withdrawal of cash-strapped Chad turned the matches against Egypt into group deciders and after being held at home in a match they dominated, the Super Eagles fell to a Ramadan Sobhy goal in Alexandria and were eliminated. South Africa Instead of contesting first place with eventual group winners Cameroon, Bafana Bafana (The Boys) never recovered from a disastrous start in which they were held by Gambia and lost to Mauritania and finished a humiliating third. Zambia A downward turn by Chipolopolo (Copper Bullets) since shocking Ivory Coast to win the 2012 final continued after drawing three and losing one of four qualifiers this year to end third in a group won by no-hopers Guinea-Bissau. Cape Verde A team ranked No. 1 in Africa for one month this year needed a home victory over modest Libya to seal a third consecutive Cup of Nations appearance, but lost to a stoppage-time goal in a game interrupted by a dog wandering around the pitch. Congo Brazzaville The central African country have been unable to sustain progress after reaching the 2015 quarter-finals despite defeating group winners Guinea-Bissau home and away. A shock loss in Kenya proved fatal. |

Crime / Afghan Blasts: Twin Kabul Explosions 'kill 24 People' by MIGNOWAP(m): 5:28pm On Sep 05, 2016 |
Twin bomb blasts in the Afghan capital Kabul
have killed at least 24 people and injured 91
others near the defence ministry, officials
say. The first bomb was detonated remotely while the second was triggered by a suicide bomber, local media reported. An army general and two senior police officers are among the dead, a ministry of defence spokesperson told the BBC. The Taliban, who have carried out frequent attacks in Kabul, claimed the blasts. Deputy defence ministry spokesman Mohammad Radmanish told the Associated Press news agency that the suicide attacker struck as security forces gathered near the ministry to deal with the first blast. He said civilians, police and soldiers were all killed as ministry employees were leaving work at rush hour. President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack saying it had been carried out by "the enemies of Afghanistan who have lost their ability to fight the security and defence forces". He said that "the aim of the terrorists is to spread fear". An Italian-run emergency hospital in Kabul tweeted that it was treating 21 injured people, four of whom died on arrival. The attack comes 11 days after 13 people, including seven students, died in an attack by gunmen on the American University in Kabul. In August two foreign professors, one from the US and one from Australia, were kidnapped by armed men near the university. No group has admitted responsibility and their whereabouts are still unknown. Several other foreigners have been kidnapped in recent times. In July a suicide bomber from the self-styled Islamic State (IS) targeted a protest march by members of the Shia Hazara minority in Kabul , killing 80 people. Shia Muslims are reviled by IS. The upsurge in violence in the capital comes as the Taliban also strives to increase its presence nationally, making an already uncertain security situation even worse since Nato forces ended their combat mission in Afghanistan at the end of 2014. The militants are now threatening to capture Lashkar Gah, the capital of the southern province of Helmand, in addition to the northern city of Kunduz - which they briefly captured last year in their biggest military offensive since the US-led 2001 invasion.
