Sports / The Good Old Days Of Nigerian Football by mikeoki(m): 9:00pm On Sep 17, 2016
There is a popular phrase that says "The only thing that is constant is change". However, a positive change is what most people long to experience. In the year 1988, Nigeria got to the final of the African cup of nations in Morocco. The tournament was tagged Maroc '88 an twelve African countries participated in that competition.

Nigeria and Cameroon played the final match. The Francophone nation pipped Nigeria 1-0 even though a legitimate equaliser was scored by the Eagles.

A year later, the West African giants appointed Clemens Westerhoff as the technical adviser of the team. The military government of that time was a soccer loving one and that had a positive effect on what happened to Nigerian football at that time.

The Dutchman had an easy access to Nigeria's number two citizen. Westerhoff was given a five year contract and he didn't have to contend with any form of interference from the Nigerian Football Association (NFA).

National talent hunt
Westerhoff embarked on a national talent hunt programme by picking locally based players to join the national team. Clubs like BCC Lions, Enugu Rangers, Bendel Insurance, Iwuanyawu Nationale, Eaghttps://sportyhour..com.ng/2016/09/the-good-old-days-of-nigerian-football.html

Some 1.1 billion teenagers and young adults are at risk of hearing loss due to the unsafe use of personal audio devices, including smartphones, and exposure to damaging levels of sound at noisy entertainment venues such as nightclubs, bars and sporting events, according to the World Health Organisation.

The WHO stated this in a statement to mark the International Ear Care Day, celebrated each year on March 3rd and the launch of the “Make Listening Safe” initiative to draw attention to the dangers of unsafe listening and promote safer practices.

Nearly half of teenagers and young adults are exposed to unsafe sound levels on headphones, while some 40 per cent put their hearing at risk at clubs, bars and sports events where “recreational noise” is excessive, WHO said.

shocked Shola Pearls (not real names) is not in the habit of going to bank premises with any luggage except his ATM cards, and if occasions demand, his cheque books. For him, bank premises, especially in this part of the globe, are places where every character and movement is viewed with suspicion.

But this day was different. A downpour had taken over Lagos metropolis and that had made it imperative for him to go out with an umbrella that would, to a large extent, shield him from the vagaries of the weather. He also needed to get some money and his plan was to do that on his way from work.

Politics / Cap.koli:i Recorded Ekiti Rigging Plot To Stop Military’s Dirty Work In Politics by mikeoki(m): 12:49pm On Feb 15, 2015
Capt Sagir Koli, until a few weeks ago, was known to a few in the military intelligence circle, his family, colleagues at the 32 Artillery Brigade in Akure, the Ondo State capital, schoolmates and friends. But all that changed when he revealed a secret recording of the involvement of the military high command in ensuring victory for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Ekiti State governorship election. The recording was done on June 20, a day to the election. He was drafted again to be part of the efforts to allegedly rig the Osun State governorship election last August. Then he made up his mind to let the cat out of the bag. His superior suspected he had something up his sleeves and started threatening him. It got to a head when he was tipped off about the plan to arrest him. He fled. In this exclusive interview with The Nation from his hideout, Koli, a graduate of Sociology from the Bayero University, Kano who voluntarily joined the military in 2005, laid bare the truth about how civilian authorities turned the military into a partisan institution.

Prior to the meeting between your boss, Brig-Gen. Aliyu Momoh, Musiliu Obanikoro, Ayodele Fayose, Jelili Adesiyan and others at the Spotless Hotel, Ado-Ekiti on June 20 last year, what were the things you saw that made you decide to record the proceedings secretly?

It depends on the manifestation of our operations there. When we got to Ekiti State, as military personnel, we were supposed to be apolitical, non-partisan and neutral. We were sent there purposely to provide an enabling environment for election to be conducted peacefully. That was our primary responsibility there. We were to ensure the security of the voters, observers, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials and any other person or organisation that was there to ensure a free and fair election. We were to provide security for them. But when we got to Ekiti, I discovered that we were taking sides with a political party. I tried to bring this to the knowledge of the command and the commander in particular. But I found out that he ( the commander ) was working based on plans. Two days to the election, I told my commander (Brig-Gen Momoh) that: “Sir the way we are going is negating our primary role here.” He categorically said: “By now you would have seen my direction. And all I want you guys to do is to follow my direction. I am working on directives.” From there I knew that we had compromised. I was the intelligence officer responsible for writing the situation report, which we call sitrep. Two days to the election, we changed from 12-hourly report to three-hourly situation report. We called it three-hourly sitrep. I was at..... inspiredreporters.com/capt-koli-i-recorded-ekiti-rigging-plot-to-stop-militarys-dirty-work-in-politics/
Nairaland / General / An Average Nigerian Cannot Spell Michael by mikeoki(m): 8:11pm On Nov 28, 2014
I have come to a conclusion that an average Nigerian cannot spell Michael. The correct spelling of this angelic name can be found in the Bible. Daniel chapter 12:1 of any English version of the Holy Bible has "Michael" and NOT the erroneous "Micheal".

Apart from the Biblical spelling, if you type the two spellings on your phone or MS Word application, you will see that "Micheal" doesn't exist.

The level of education of Nigerians seems to have no effect on the spelling of this very common name.

Michael is the only English spelling of this Christian name.
