MindAfrica is hosting the 2016 edition of the School Maker Faire with over 300 young makers from primary, junior and senior secondary schools in Port Harcourt, on the 15th of October.

The School Maker Faire is a celebration of invention, creativity, and resourcefulness among school children. It showcases brilliant projects by makers who are exploring new forms and new technologies, hence, an inspiring event for kids bursting with creative ideas and excitement to get more into making and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math).

This call is for adult Makers (tech enthusiasts, inventors, crafters, tinkerers, engineers, creative artists, and anyone who fully embraces the do-it-yourself (or do-it-together) spirit and wants to share knowledge and skills with young students at the event. 2016 School Maker Faire will host amazing DIY workshops of all kinds for kids ages 8 – 17. Participation is free.

Who is eligible:
The MindAfrica School Maker Faire is not a passive sit-down experience; it is a hands-on, community-based learning extravaganza that inspires everyone to become a Maker. Eligibility is for:
• Makers: Adult makers with the skills and experience in making – creating, inventing or modifying things, who are able to facilitate hands-on workshops exploring new forms and new technologies across STEAM fields for kids.
• Excellent Mentors: Caring adults who have the patience to guide young makers at their pace; participate actively and practically (not theoretically), and willing to share knowledge and expertise.

Group applications are welcomed; however, groups must be able to simulate their projects for review before the event and provide major learning materials for the proposed workshop activity.

How to Apply
Kindly send an email to info@mindafrica.org containing your Name, Contact details, Interested Workshop Activity, Work Experience and Expertise, Links to images of previous works, and a brief summary of why you are interested.

What Happens Next
Following your submission, you will receive an email confirming that we have your application. If you don’t receive your confirmation email within 48 hours, call 07065677422. This confirmation does not constitute acceptance to the MindAfrica School Maker Faire.

You’ll be notified via email about your acceptance to the event. Once accepted, you will be asked to provide us with more detailed information about yourself or your organization. After which, you will be scheduled for a meeting where you will demonstrate your proposed workshop activity. Once concluded, begin to plan for a general Training of Trainers (T.O.T) Meeting.

Vacancies exist for Part-time trainers – August Summer Camp

MindAfrica is seeking to recruit trainers for her summer camp that includes hands-on projects and emphasizes learning by doing. We are looking for exceptional trainers, programmers, Mobile games Designers, 3D animators etc- who can develop workshop-ready solutions to interesting challenges by building, making, constructing or inventing things. The goal is to develop young makers who can make things and explain how they work and why.
Based on open-ended project descriptions, trainers would be responsible for developing project plans and working with students to create exciting projects within MindAfrica program scope.
Target audience: Secondary school students between ages 8 -16
Class Size: Minimum 15, maximum 25.
Instructional Team: Trainer will work with and receive significant support and coaching from our core team. In large workshops, trainer will be expected to work with another trainer and co-instruct. Relevant training materials, technology, technical support and troubleshooting would be provided by MindAfrica.
Job Requirements/Responsibilities:
 Must be ready to apply creative skills and those of an educator to plan, acquire materials, prep, and present workshops within MindAfrica’s program scope.
 Must be adaptable, flexible, and enthusiastic while interacting with groups of students in a high energy setting
 Should have ability to assess own progress and troubleshoot challenges.
 Should have ability to work collaboratively with other instructors or team members.

Candidates Requirements:
 in-classroom experience or working on similar projects.
 Background in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Arts.
 Excellent interpersonal skills - with youth, peers, supervisors and parents.
 Successful completion of a screening task – at interview stage.

2016 Call for Volunteer Mentors (STEM)

MindAfrica is presently recruiting volunteer mentors (STEM) for scheduled programs targeted at secondary school-age youths in Port Harcourt, Rivers State

Our programs are training sessions that includes hands-on projects and emphasizes learning by doing. We are looking for exceptional Mentors – Web developers, Software Developers, App Developers, Computer engineers, programmers, 3D designers, tinkerers, and scientists - who can develop workshop-ready solutions to interesting challenges by building, making, constructing or inventing things. Based on open-ended project descriptions, Volunteers would work with students to create exciting, whimsical, structures, vehicles designs and devices within MindAfrica program scope. The goal is to develop young innovators who can make things and explain how they work and why.

Target audience:
Secondary school students between ages 10-17 years

Class/Group Size:
Minimum 15, maximum 30.

Instructional Team:
Volunteer mentors will work with and receive significant support and coaching from our training team. In large workshops, mentors will be expected to work in teams and co-instruct. Relevant training materials, technology, technical support and troubleshooting would be provided by MindAfrica.

Job Requirements/Responsibilities:
 Volunteer mentors must reside in Port-Harcourt (or for the duration of the project)
 Must be ready to apply creative skills in training students in a workshop format
 Must be adaptable, flexible, and enthusiastic while interacting with groups of students in a high energy setting
 Should have ability to assess own progress and troubleshoot challenges.
 Should have ability to work collaboratively with other instructors or team members.

Volunteers should have some or all of the following requirements:
 2+ years of in-classroom experience or working on similar projects is an advantage
 Background in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math –related fields
 Excellent interpersonal skills - with youth, peers, supervisors and parents.
 References from previous projects
 Must have experience working with teenagers or youths
 Should be able to break complex training materials into smaller and understandable terms fit for teenagers.
 Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
 Ability to give at least 3 hours between the hours of 9am and 4pm on specified training days which may include Saturdays
 Must possess critical and analytical thinking skills
