There is this quote by Confucius; a Chinese philosopher and a teacher. It says: “The man who thinks he can and the man who thinks he can’t are both right”

Confucius’ thoughts instigated the pushing of boundaries of the “self.” People think that if they are not inherently athletic enough, physical labour or sports are not their “thing”, or if they have always been into books and research, finding a career in academia seems like the only logical step. Confucius wouldn’t agree to this thought. His ideologies dealt with transcending the image of the self and doing things that you wouldn’t think you could do.

The reason behind this philosophy is that Confucius did not believe in an eternal self. He had the belief that as human beings we are subject to change at all times. It is not the inherent internal characteristics that determine what our innate “self” is rather it is the external conditions and simulations that form our psyche, personality, and behaviour.

Patricia Bright grew up in Battersea, London. In the early 90s, my mother took a leap of faith and moved from Nigeria to London where she met my father, a Nigerian international student working for his printing technology degree in the UK. Not long afterwards, she became pregnant with me; 18 months later with my sister.

After he graduated, Dad worked for a publishing firm and Mum put her hands to everything and anything she could to support raising two children. She had a salon/boutique back in Nigeria and was determined to make something of herself here, too. Then, when I was six years old, Dad was deported.

It came as a total shock. One night there was a frantic knocking at the door and a team of policemen took him away like a thief in the night. I can still see Mum sitting on the stairs, pleading with them while my sister and I sobbed. It would take six years and a court case before my father would come back to us.
Now that I’m older I understand that he was an illegal immigrant who hadn’t applied for permanent residency once his student visa had expired. (Mum was naturalised here at the time of having my sister and me.) With Dad gone, we were on our own.

Mum worked as an office cleaner at this point. She put in the shifts, getting up for 5am starts on some days and trudging home after 10pm on others. And while we were at primary school, my sister and I learned to put in the shifts, too. We had to go everywhere with her because she couldn’t leave us home alone.

Jack Ma, the executive chairman of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, has said he plans to step down in a year.

The news, in a letter sent by Mr Ma to Alibaba customers and shareholders, follows conflicting reports over the weekend on the timing of his exit.

Mr Ma, one of China's richest men, will hand over the reins to Daniel Zhang, currently chief executive.

Alibaba is one of the world's most valuable companies - its shares nearly doubled in value last year.

Mr Zhang, who is 46, developed the company's Singles' Day promotion, which is the world's biggest one-day online retail event.

Once you determine the needs of your target customer and how your product is able to meet them, centering your sales pitch around meeting those needs is the best way by far to close a sale.
2. Sell Yourself

Whether you’re cold calling or have spoken before, it’s important to keep in mind that before a person is going to be willing to hand over their hard-earned money to you, they’ve got to like you the salesperson just as much as they like the product that you are selling.

When you’re making a sales pitch, take a little time to get to know your customer and let them get to know you.
