TV/Movies / Re: Tom Or Jerry, Who Did You Support As A Child ? by missdee23(f): 6:02pm On Apr 05, 2022
I supported Tom, he was usually in trouble for what Jerry caused. As tiny as Jerry was, he was mostly the one to start the fight or manipulate Jerry into causing chaos. But I enjoy the episodes where they team up to fight a common enemy, and temporarily become friends.

Nope, I see it as a fun superstition of sorts, not something to base serious matters on. I don't want to get involved with someone who'll use astrology sign as an excuse for everything.
Family / Re: How Can You Teach Your Child Your Language by missdee23(f): 1:04pm On Jan 04, 2022
Best way for them to learn is to have you speak to them in your native language right from when they are babies and they'll pick up from there. In fact, they might probably be better at it than your wife though she has a longer headstart than them. Children can learn multiple languages, not so easy for adults (too many things to worry about cheesy). They can even learn yours, your wife's with the English language.

I was going to download and watch, not necessarily because of the storyline (not really expecting much on this, tbh) but for its comic side, but it seems there's nothing appealing about the movie. So I'll just jump and pass.

Nairaland / General / Re: No Crossover Program: Who's With Me? by missdee23(f): 7:22pm On Dec 31, 2021
Mine is to finish reading up my novel and sleep when I get tired. New year's eve is always a sort of anxious and tensed period for me, I just want a quiet time for myself this time around.

I'm not sure there's a way of stopping them from sponging off you without coming across as the bad person. So it's better you find a way to reorganize yourself and forget any negative thing they might say about you later on. Do what you can to help them willing, not the one that will make you to mumble and grumble inside you.

TV/Movies / Books V Movies: Which Do You Prefer? by missdee23(f): 5:30pm On Dec 30, 2021
Hey Guys. Like the topic says, which do you prefer: reading a book or watching its adaptation on screen?
There are so many great books that have been adapted into movies. Some of them include:

Maami by Femi Osofisan
Beast of no nation by Uzodinma Iweala
Half of a Yellow Sun Chimamanda Adichie
Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe TV series
The Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski
Without Remorse by Tom Clancy
Murder on the Orient express by Agatha Christie
Me before you by Jojo Moyes
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
The Godfather by Mario Puzo
Harry Potter series by J. K Rowling
50 Shades series by E. L James
A walk to remember by Nicholas Sparks
Hidden figures by Margot Lee Shetterly
Inferno by Dan Brown
More detailed, book
Lord of the rings JRR Tolkien
Game of Thrones series by George R R Martin, et c.

Now you'll all agree with me that movies save time. The days you might spend reading a novel can be cut down to hours in movie time. But don't be surprised that the books tend to be more detailed than the movies. However, movies allow you skip endless pages of boring parts.

You can also bond/chill with your partner, family and friends over a movie/series but not so easily with novels since it's more of an individual activity. Besides, they do not require much concentration as books do.

Also, movies do not require as much concentration/imagination like novels do. You don't have to visualize each scene (especially when watching fantasy movies) , it's just for you to relax and enjoy the show. But for novels, you are the creative director and you'll find yourself right in the middle of the action. A great novelist must be a pro at using descriptive words to carry his readers along.

While I enjoy both forms of entertainment, I find it hard to read a book after watching its screen adaptation mostly because of the cut-out scenes because I'm always trying to place each movie scene with the book. But I don't have any problem watching a movie after reading it's book first.

If you've read a book and watched its movie/TV adaptation which did you enjoy more?
Family / Re: Is It Offensive To Refer To Someone As Fat In Nigeria? by missdee23(f): 9:29am On Dec 26, 2021
It depends on whether the word is used negatively as a weapon to insult someone (which can come across as mean or cruel) or maybe to compliment someone especially when 'level don change' . I think it's the intent behind the word that counts.

Romance / Keeping The Spark In Long Distance Relationships by missdee23(f): 2:53pm On Sep 27, 2019
Let’s face it guys – LDRs are not for the faint-hearted. They require a higher level of trust and commitment compared to the conventional relationship but if you and your partner can pull through, the experience will serve to bind you even stronger. A couple of years ago a friend and I decided to take things further. It was a smooth ride until he decided to travel abroad. At first we communicated frequently via texts, video calls but after a while we just drifted apart. Now we just send the occasional birthday and special holiday greetings to each other. Now this is not to discourage you if you are in one (or contemplating such), there have been success stories about LDRs. But you have to be willing to put in the work. You and your partner just have to find creative means to keep the flame burning while apart. So how then can you keep the spark in an LDR relationship, its not an easy ride but it would be worth it at the end of the day. Distance doesn’t have to separate you from the love of your life.

Here are a few things to keep in mind.

First things first have a goal in mind. “How long are we going to be apart?” “What are our plans for the future? “, et c are some of the questions you need to be asking yourselves. No couple can be in a long distance relationship forever so you need to plan ahead of time. It’s important that you are on the same page and have the same goals.

Set some ground rules from the start. Be clear with the Do’s and Don’ts. What is the commitment level? Can you go on casual dates with others?? You’ve got to be open with each other right from the very beginning.

Trust. If you’ve got trust issues you might want to rethink the whole LDR thingy else you might just end up ruining your relationship due to insecurity. You’ve got to be willing to trust your partner. Don’t fall into the trap of hooking up with another guy/girl because you feel your partner must be doing the same wherever he/she is.

Honesty cannot be overlooked. Talk about your feelings of fear, insecurity, jealousy, whatsoever. Be open and honest with your partner. Secrets tend to make their way into the open and in an unexpected manner. Don’t bottle up your emotions but share your burden with your partner to give you the support you need.

What can you do to keep the relationship going? Here are a few tips to try out

First try to spice up your video calls. You can set up a video date, weird right? But give it a try first. Prepare for it like a real date, makeup, dress and create a romantic mood- candle light and all.

Play online games with each. There are so many multi-player games out there for couples for instance scrabble, chess, checkers, Dominoes etc. Find what works for the both of you.

Send random gifts to each other from time to time. Don’t wait for special occasions to do that. Goes to show they are always on your mind.

Make plans to see each other from time to time.

Ever being in a LDR before or currently in one now? Let’s know what works/worked for you.

Crime / The Role Of Forensics In Battling Crime by missdee23(f): 7:51am On Sep 18, 2019
There’s a serial killer in town. For now it’s restricted to the city of Port Harcourt, but for how long though? Reports have it that a total of ten girls have been strangled to death in sleazy hotels within two months. However what the Deputy Commissioner of Police in Rivers State had to say was “In as much as societal values degenerate, you need to go back to educate your fellow women and advise them against prostitution because they are the targets and victims of such crimes.” Now irrespective of what kind of lives the victims lived (alleged prostitutes), they all deserved to live . Heck you will be held liable for attempted suicide so what makes it OK for someone else to snuff out your life even if you were the scum of the earth? A terrible crime is being perpetrated and the killer(s) needs to be brought to book immediately.

Now serial killing is a relatively unknown concept in Nigeria compared to other countries. The U.S.A. is still unmatched with a total of 2,743 serial killers, amounting to 67.41% of the entire world's serial killers on record. The country has however been largely successful in bringing criminals to book through its use of technology to complement human efforts. At this point forensics would have played a huge part in catching the criminal. But when you compare global practices regarding the use of forensics in crime investigation it seems Nigeria still lags behind in some areas. The nation of over 190 million people ( with an high crime rate) has no stable functional forensic lab, let alone forensic experts. A DNA Forensics Center has recently been established in Lagos under the Ambode-led administration in 2017.

Ideally, a crime scene investigator is often one of the first professionals at the scene of a crime, whose duty is to examine the location and gather evidence relevant to the investigation, including photographs and physical evidence. This evidence is then forwarded to a laboratory where a forensic scientist will analyze what has been provided using various scientific methods. A comprehensive database of citizens is also a must because materials from a crime scene will be automatically screened against information in the database to identify potential suspects. DNA and fingerprints for instance, can be stored in databases and used to identify suspects more quickly. This will make solving crimes not only quicker but more accurate.

Cases like these expose the loopholes and shortcomings in our security system and the need for reform of the police sector. The Government has to be proactive and nip this in the bud before it escalates further. This is 2019, our country is way too complex to still be applying policing methods of the 90s. Today, law enforcement, with the aid of technology, can detect and solve crimes happening in the moment making them to be more proactive. The Giant of Africa needs to step up her game in the area of securing the lives and property of her citizens.

Here’s hoping the victims get justice soon.
