The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is targeting to have Microfinance Bank branches in all the 774 local governments of the country.
The capital base of the new NIRSAL Microfinance Bank will initially be N5 billion and as a first step, the apex bank said this new Microfinance banks which is a collaboration between the Bankers Committee, NIRSAL and NIPOST will see the establishment of seven Microfinance banks in the six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Thereafter the number will be scaled up to 50 Microfinance banks which are expected to become operational in the second phase of the launch of NIRSAL Microfinance bank. The first seven branches to be opened will be located in Ibadan, Port Harcourt, Bauchi, Kaduna, Enugu and Lokoja in addition to the one in Gwagwalada Abuja.

Governor of the CBN Mr. Godwin Emefiele made this known on Wednesday at Gwagwalada, in Abuja when he embarked on a facility tour of Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) microfinance bank, an agribusiness initiative which provides risk for framers.

According to Emefiele, “we are just inspecting one out of the first seven and we are scaling up to the next 50 in the next phase.

The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has distanced President Muhammadu Buhari from what he called “lawlessness” allegedly being perpetrated in the All Progressives Congress by the National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

Okorocha, in a statement on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, said Buhari “is too decent” to be backing Oshiomhole in his unlawful actions.

The governor said Oshiomhole had done “so many strange things in APC.”

Okorocha described his suspension and that of his Ogun State counterpart, Ibikunle Amosun, from APC as worrisome.

He said Oshiomhole’s idea of party supremacy was lawlessness.

The Lagos State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Jimi Agabje, has challenged the ruling All Progressives Congress to be prepared for resistance in the event of violence in the March 9 governorship election.
Agbaje, in a series of videos posted on his verified Twitter account on Friday, decried the violence reported at several polling units across the state during the presidential and National Assembly elections last Saturday.

He said he had visited some areas affected by voter suppression and violence, adding that it was understandable why some Lagosians were disappointed, angry or afraid.

A Human Rights Lawyer, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, has threatened to sue the Independent National electoral Commission over its use of the National Youth Service Corps members to conduct elections.
Ajulo, who made this known in an interview with Newsmen on Friday in Abuja, said that the use of corps members by INEC was against the law.

Ajulo said that he was against corps members being used to conduct elections, adding that the law setting up the scheme frowned against it and must be stopped forthwith.

He said that he would sue the electoral umpire if the use of corps members were not jettisoned.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed shock that the presidential election was postponed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, a few hours before its conduct.
Atiku, who spoke at his residence in Yola, Adamawa State on Saturday, said he had no issue with the sensitive materials that had already been distributed for the election in as much as they were kept in a safe place.

The Coalition of United Political Parties on Saturday alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari is planning to suspend the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Mahmood Yakubu.
Ugochinyere claimed the President was planning to name a National Commissioner, Amina Zakari, as the Acting Chairman, citing her experience as the oldest and most experienced National Commissioner.

The Independent National Electoral Commission says it is unfortunate that Nigerians do not appreciate the efforts of the commission.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this while briefing stakeholders on the reason for the postponement of the general elections which had drawn the ire of Nigerians.

He said between 2015 November when he took over INEC and now, the commission had been able to undertake 195 off-season elections which were successful.

Yakubu said ahead of the postponed elections, the electoral umpire was able to register 14 million new voters, print 421.7 million of ballot papers and 14.28 million Permanent Voter Cards in record time as well as mobilise over one million ad hoc workers which would undertake the elections.

The Kano Police Command says it has arrested two suspects in possession of 14 bags of fake specimen ballot papers in Kano metropolis.

The Command’s Public Relations officer, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, who made the comfirmation to newsmen in Kano on Thursday, said the suspects were apprehended around Metro Police Area Command.

He said that the suspect were arrested on Feb.13, Wednesday evening by some police officers attached to Metro Area Command in the metropolis.

The former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, on Thursday, asked the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, what was causing the delay in the persecution of the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

The Coalition of United Political Parties on Tuesday alleged that it has uncovered a plan by the Federal Government to force the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, to resign “at gun point.”
It said the decision was taken after Onnoghen turned down “all mouth-watering offers” made to him.

An Abuja High Court sitting in Maitama on Thursday ordered the police to show cause over it’s continued detention of Sen. Dino Melaye.

Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, who has been in police custody since Jan. 4, approached the court for enforcement of his fundamental right.

Justice Yusuf Halilu gave the order after Melaye’s counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN) informed the court that his client has been in police custody since Jan. 4 against what the law stipulated.
