Politics / Ministers, Service Chiefs Pay Solidarity Visit To Jonathan by MrPatoh: 7:28am On Apr 02, 2015 |
The Presidential Villa, Abuja wore a mournful look in the early hours of Wednesday, the morning after President Goodluck Jonathan lost his re-election bid. A few workers who had already closed from work at the time the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, named Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) of the All Progressives Congress the President-elect, were seen discussing the development in hush tones. The weekly Federal Executive Council meeting did not hold. But some members of FEC, mostly ministers, gathered at the President’s office later in the day to pay a solidarity visit to Jonathan. Some of the ministers who met with the President were the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Adoke (SAN); Minister of State II, Foreign Affairs, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro; Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali; and Minister of National Planning, Suleiman Abubakar. Some female ministers also visited the President. They included the Minister of Women Affairs, Zainab Maina; Minister of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson; Minister of Water Resources, Sarah Ochekpe; Minister of Environment, Laraba Mallam; Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Akon Eyakenyi. One of the ministers who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that they used the opportunity of the visit to encourage the President and commend him for his achievements. The government official expressed the optimism that Jonathan might win the Nobel Peace Prize for ensuring that the nation remained peaceful after conducting a free, fair and credible election. It will be recalled that some ministers and governors had on Tuesday evening visited the President. Among the early callers were Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State; Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State; Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State and a former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Mr. Emeka Worgu. Also, the nation’s service chiefs on Wednesday visited President Jonathan. They were led to the closed-door session with the President by the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.). The service chiefs who met with Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja included the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh; Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu. None of them spoke with journalists at the end of the parley that lasted about an hour. After the meeting, they also consulted briefly with Dasuki at the forecourt of the President’s office before they left. Details of discussion at the meeting were not available at the time of filing this report. The last time the security chiefs met with Jonathan was on March 17 when they briefed him of their preparation for the general election and the success recorded in the anti- terrorism war in the north-eastern pa rt of the country. Religion / Christians Celebrate Palm Sunday by MrPatoh: 12:41pm On Mar 29, 2015 |
Sunday is a Christian moveable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter . The feast commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem , an event mentioned in all four canonical Gospels . In many Christian churches, Palm Sunday includes a procession of the assembled worshipers carrying palms, representing the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem. The difficulty of procuring palms in unfavorable climates led to their substitution with branches of native trees, including box, yew , willow , and olive. The Sunday was often designated by the names of these trees, as in Yew Sunday , or by the general term Branch Sunday . |

Politics / My Finger Was Recognised At 11 Th Try – Gov. Aliyu by MrPatoh: 5:03am On Mar 29, 2015 |
Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger has called for more public education on card reader and voter card before using them for elections . Aliyu made the call after casting his vote at the Musa Umar Ward Polling Unit in Minna on Saturday . He said the use of the two innovations had thrown up the challenges encountered during Saturday ’ s election . “ You can imagine a situation where the card reader fails to identify me and I even have to use my 10 fingers on the reader without success. It was at the eleventh try that my finger was recognised . “ This is a delay that can be avoided . This card has my name , my picture and this is my polling unit. I have been recognised by even the INEC official but the process has to be followed . “ I think more needs to be done on this challenge before we go into another poll . This can be rectified at the April 11 elections ’’, he said . NAN reports that voting started in some wards at 2p . m . due to late accreditation. Low turnout of registered voters was noticed in some places at the end of accreditation . At Kofae Isa Gomina Polling Unit 05 , Barki Sale , only 85 out of 1 , 716 people were accredited while 564 out of 1, 278 were accredited at Dogon Kowa . At Kofar Gidan Sarki Unit in new Bwari in Tafa Local Government Area , 359 out of 912 registered voters were accredited to vote, while at Bakin Kasuwa Primary School 2 in Bagama A of Suleja , 405 out the 683 were accredited to vote. At Shiroro , voters resorted to jumping queue due to tiredness from long waiting. Mr Akoniyin Oluwasegun , INEC ’ s Presiding Officer in Shiroro , said “ I need more support , even the police officers are tired. ”
