Family / Re: Relocating To Nigeria : What Budget? by MrsA: 2:41pm On May 10, 2012
I've removed all romanticism from my intentions and yes I fit that description I guess.

What I do know though is that experience and education gained abroad (in most sectors) makes a huge difference. This is subjective from one individual to the next but i'm a firm believer in that and driven by the "well, what is stopping Nigeria and Nigerians having that level of service, product development, state of industry - eventually"....

For example, living in a "high brow" area and earning a comfortable living will mean I can substantially add value to the current mHealth programme in Nigeria. Like it or not, the private sector framework will make the difference. In a capitalist, globalised world, people get paid to do good jobs. it makes a difference.

Very comfortable, relatively happy...

With 88% of all knife crime being committed by black teenagers in London and a rising 40 % of this by those of Nigerian origin, my happiness will be greatly improved providing my kids with a more disciplined sense of self in an environment where I know violence does not provide "street cred" where my private school £££'s will go a long way to augmenting the choices and values we impart at home not undoing them....

I agree - "good reason" is very subjective though...

I think this depends how the individual or his/her family are comfortable in UK. If you make well enough money and appreciate simple things like security, electrity, good roads etc then you really need to have a very good reason to leave UK for Lagos (unless you are guaranteed to be presented better standard of living when you move back)

There is soo much more to life than what you earn and/or how well the roads run!!

What about ensuring your kids have a solid and proud sense of identity. Contributing to ensuring Nigeria is "less of a joke" to coin an earlier poster. Nigeria has it's struggles yes but we are one of the most resilient races around. We can change things and it may be that "we" are simply taking small steps to provide an easier platform for our children to make more of a difference....

I am not coming back to Nigeria because "i coudn't make it in the UK" and that perception of relocators is a dire and sad misconception.

It would be great to connect with those considering or decided on relocation as well as those who have recently done so. Please "friend" or PM me if you'd like to ...

We can all support each other. I'm currently in the UK and considering the move in time for this school year. I have 2 young boys and life in London is not conducive for many reasons...It's not all about "making it" here or there... There are Pro's and Cons for everyone one of these decisions and life is not a rehearsal. One may as well try all opportunities and experiences for an enriched and informed point of view. My family will be better for it - worts, knocks, highlights and all!!

Very helpful thread@ blank, thank you for the directions!!

I have a new question: Can anyone help with what to expect for a relocation fund/payment in addition to salary for a mid/snr manager role? I have had quotes from N7m to $5k!! Quite a difference
Family / Re: I Want To Use A Nannycam On My Nanny, should I? by MrsA: 1:33pm On May 09, 2012
I concur with @smilenw. Nappies are a minimal worry in the grand scheme of what could be wrong! Not irrelevant but deffo manageable!

Good luck!

I absolutely would. They are your kids (nappy matter aside). If you're not sure you can trust her, do it. In all honesty, when i come back, i'll do it anyway and would have in the UK too. It will either show you bad habits that can be corrected, as suggested above, or unforgiveable behaviour that could be harming.

I'd also consider "assisting with her Grandchild" if that's the issue. I don't believe any carer to your children will be fully adequate - our standards are high because of what's at stake. All you can really do is manage the niggles or eliminate them if unbearable.

I will probably have to start a new thread on this but MommyNLanders, where on earth do i find a good nanny!?

You maybe right. What I actually need is a mummy forum!!

grin

I'm making plans to come over from the UK but with 2 under 5's there's sooo much to consider!

I guess i'll come back when i've had some less biased advice and feel more comfortable parting with my wonga.

cheers guys!!

ceejayluv: Perhaps, some Medical aid app.. Focusing on say, curtailing maternal/infant mortality. Kinda ante-natal care app so to speak.

This is so urgently needed! mHealth is one of the biggest opportunities for mobile apps to really make a difference. My cousin died last week. Though God knows the full story, her husband cut the baby's cord at home (which is never advised!!) but took none of the required precautions. He just didn't know - Ajoke was gone before they got to hospital. She left behind 4 children including the new baby now 2 weeks old!!

Commend this thread, Open Innovation is the key to a greater great Nigeria!

On a lighter note, i'd absolutely purchase The Power Predictor. Yes, I have named the electricity app-it's now copy written :-D

Properties / To Buy Or Not To Buy - That Is The Question.... by MrsA: 2:06pm On May 05, 2012
I'm moving back to Lagos and of course need somewhere to stay. I'm not too exposed to current house prices on the Island and need to make a choice to buy or rent.

Any assistance welcome.
- What are average prices for 4-5 bedroom houses and apartments (also not sure which to go for)
- How does the Mortgage sector function for new residents? If at all
-what is the minimum "payment in advance" ? 1years rent. More?
- What area is best? Stayed in Ajah last time i was around but imagine living with the daily toll charges could get expensive?
- what are the best Primary schools(Primary) in the area and corresponding house prices near by?

....thanks in advance. I'll probably have more questions!

Career / Re: Am I Delusional!? by MrsA: 11:21am On May 02, 2012
AjanleKoko:

I have to answer your first question with a question. Are you already speaking to some companies locally? I don't think there is much to add by way of tips, just follow through with the process, and present your salary expectations. The good thing about Nigeria is, salaries are generally open to negotiation, and it depends on your perceived worth to the company.

I work in Product Management, at one of the Big Four telcos.

Well, yes, I am in talks.... thanks for your assistance so far.

Which of the following are of most importance to your work right now:
- Content ( Innovation, pricing...)
- Service quality (Infrastructually and/or experientially)
- number portability and retention...?

And who knows, we may be on the way to being colleagues. Or arch competitors! grin grin grin grin

If I accept the offer and am in Lagos, it might be helpful/nice to meeet.

Thanks @AK.

Any tips on how to avail myself to the teams when I come over for final interview in Lagos? Do you have a magic formulae for how I secure the N28m!? grin
...

May I ask what you do in Telecoms. And/or who for?\
Career / Re: Am I Delusional!? by MrsA: 11:10am On May 01, 2012
LOL.

Well ok. May I request then that you re-state your assessment of my experience Vs the EA to CEO role in your company? Not sure if your were suggesting my experience was more PA ( shocked) than EA...? What might I be "worth" bearing in mind that a lot of my Bus Dev experience was with the GSMA. cool

Also as much detail on the remuneration package as you might know (or give an educated guess about....) would be helpful.

Career / Re: Am I Delusional!? by MrsA: 1:48am On May 01, 2012
AjanleKoko:

I need to modify my original response.
It's banking that I am not sure of. In telecom, we have PAs. Oil and gas, same thing. A PA is . . . well, a PA. appointments scheduling, calendar management, etc.
In my company we have a role in the CEO's office that oversees strategy and business development. It's a senior manager role. Definitely more than N15m.
Is that what you had in mind?

@AK, yes, an Executive Assistant to the CEO is a senior management role with strategy execution responsibility: business development, client strategy, meeting and management (e.g. in telecoms, elements of handset OEM strategy) but also elements of the internal communications strategy.

I take from your response that you are in Telecoms yourself?
Career / Re: Am I Delusional!? by MrsA: 5:18pm On Apr 30, 2012
@AK, feel free to elaborate.

My second interview with CEO in question has lead to a scheduled 2nd interview in Lagos shortly. I am on appx N20m ( in GBP) for what i currently do in the UK.

You may well, of course be the CEO of a fortune 150 hence the confidence in your answer versus my prosepective employers' and others...

Look forward to hearing your context.

Thanks,

Well 11+ years in Business Developement (CXO level), Analytical Research, Project Management and board level B2B event/forum production. EA not PA.

Hope that puts me in the right bracket - so far so good as noises are positive...

Career / Re: Am I Delusional!? by MrsA: 11:47am On Apr 26, 2012
AjanleKoko: @OP,
Oil and Gas, I don't know. But for banking and telecom, you are indeed delusional.

@AK,

Can you help me out with what it should be? A ball park range is what i was looking for. The tittle was a rhetorical question but thanks.

Hello fellow Ng'ns,

Does anybody know first or second hand (i.e. not guesswork), how much an EA would earn for the EA to CEO role in Banking, O&G and Telecoms? Insight into relocation packages would be great.

My thoughts would be around N15M per annum? Am I delusional or close? embarassed angry

Thanks for your insight
