Nairaland / General / Life Of A Freedom Fighter: Archbishop Desmond Tutu by Mufasa1805(m): 11:17am On Oct 09, 2016 |
In 1978 Desmond Tutu was appointed general secretary of the South African Council of Churches and became a leading spokesperson for the rights of black South Africans. During the 1980s he played an unrivaled role in drawing national and international attention to the iniquities of apartheid, and in 1984 he won the Nobel Prize for Peace for his efforts. Early Life Desmond Mpilo Tutu was born on October 7, 1931 in Klerksdorp, South Africa. His father was an elementary school principal and his mother worked cooking and cleaning at a school for the blind. The South Africa of Tutu's youth was rigidly segregated, with black Africans denied the right to vote and forced to live only in specific areas. Although as a child Tutu understood that he was treated worse than white children based on nothing other than the color of his skin, he resolved to make the best of the situation and still managed a happy childhood. "We knew, yes, we were deprived," he later recalled. "It wasn't the same thing for white kids, but it was as full a life as you could make it. I mean, we made toys for ourselves with wires, making cars, and you really were exploding with joy!" Tutu recalls one day when he was out walking with his mother when a white man, a priest named Trevor Huddleston, tipped his hat to her—the first time he had ever seen a white man pay this respect to a black woman. The incident made a profound impression on Tutu, teaching him that he need not accept discrimination and that religion could be a powerful tool for advocating racial equality. Tutu was a bright and curious child with a passion for reading. He especially loved reading comic strips as well as Aesop's Fables and the plays of Shakespeare. His family moved to the capital city of Johannesburg when he was 12 years old, and it was around that time that Tutu contracted tuberculosis and nearly died. The experience inspired his ambition to become a medical doctor and find a cure for the disease. Tutu attended Johannesburg Bantu High School, a grossly underfunded all-black school where he nevertheless received an excellent education. "The people who taught us were very dedicated and they inspired you to want to emulate them and really to become all that you could become," Tutu remembered. "They gave you the impression that, in fact, yeah, the sky is the limit. You can, even with all of the obstacles that are placed in your way; you can reach out to the stars." Tutu graduated from high school in 1950, and although he had been accepted into medical school, his family could not afford the expensive tuition. Instead he accepted a scholarship to study education at Pretoria Bantu Normal College and graduated with his teacher's certificate in 1953. He then continued on to receive a bachelor's degree from the University of South Africa in 1954. Upon his graduation from university, Tutu returned to his high school alma mater to teach English and history. "I tried to be what my teachers had been to me to these kids," he said, "seeking to instill in them a pride, a pride in themselves. A pride in what they were doing. A pride that said they may define you as so and so. You aren't that. Make sure you prove them wrong by becoming what the potential in you says you can become." Rise to Prominence Nevertheless, Tutu became increasingly frustrated with the racism corrupting all aspects of South African life under apartheid. In 1948, when Tutu was 17 years old, the National Party won control of the government and codified the nation's long-present segregation and inequality into the official, rigid policy of apartheid. In 1953, the government passed the Bantu Education Act, a law that lowered the standards of education for black South Africans to ensure that they only learned what was necessary for a life of servitude. The government spent one-tenth as much money on the education of a black student as on the education of a white one, and Tutu's overcrowded classes often included as many as 80 pupils. No longer willing to participate in an educational system explicitly designed to promote inequality, he quit teaching in 1957. The next year, in 1958, Tutu enrolled at St. Peter's Theological College in Johannesburg. He was ordained as an Anglican deacon in 1960 and as a priest in 1961. In 1962, Tutu left South Africa to pursue further theological studies in London, receiving his master's of theology from King's College in 1966. He then returned from his four years abroad to teach at the Federal Theological Seminary at Alice in the Eastern Cape as well as to serve as the chaplain of the University of Fort Hare. In 1970, Tutu moved to the University of Roma in Lesotho to serve as a lecturer in the department of theology. Two years later, he decided to move back to England to accept his appointment as the associate director of the Theological Education Fund of the World Council of Churches in Kent. Tutu's rise to international prominence began when he became the first black person to be appointed the Anglican Dean of Johannesburg in 1975. It was in this position that he emerged as one of the most prominent and eloquent voices in the South African anti-apartheid movement. Tutu explained, "I realized that I had been given a platform that was not readily available to many blacks and most of our leaders were either now in chains or in exile. And I said, 'Well, I'm going to use this to seek to try to articulate our aspirations and the anguishes of our people.'" In 1976, shortly after he was appointed Bishop of Lesotho, further raising his international profile, Tutu wrote a letter to the South African Prime Minister warning him that a failure to quickly redress racial inequality could have dire consequences, but his letter was ignored. Tutu was selected as the General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches in 1978, and he continued to use his elevated position in the South African religious hierarchy to advocate for an end to apartheid. "I never doubted that ultimately we were going to be free, because ultimately I knew there was no way in which a lie could prevail over the truth, darkness over light, death over life," he said. In 1984, Desmond Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize "not only as a gesture of support to him and to the South African Council of Churches of which he is leader, but also to all individuals and groups in South Africa who, with their concern for human dignity, fraternity and democracy, incite the admiration of the world." He was the first South African to receive the award since Albert Luthuli in 1961. Tutu's receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize transformed South Africa's anti-apartheid movement into a truly international force with deep sympathies all across the globe. "It opened doors which was important for our people," he said about the award. "It was important for our people at that point in our history because we were tending to go off the radar screen and this brought us back spectacularly." The award also elevated Tutu to the status of a renowned world leader. As he himself put it, "You get the Nobel Peace Prize and you say the same thing that you said before you got the prize and now everybody thinks, 'Oh, dear, the oracle has spoken.'" In 1985, Tutu was appointed the Bishop of Johannesburg, and a year later he became the first black person to hold the highest position in the South African Anglican Church when he was chosen as the Archbishop of Cape Town. In 1987, he was also named the president of the All Africa Conference of Churches, a position he held until 1997. In no small part due to Tutu's eloquent advocacy and brave leadership, in 1993 South African apartheid finally came to an end, and in 1994 South Africans elected Nelson Mandela as their first black president. The honor of introducing the new president to the nation fell to Tutu. He recalled that in that triumphant moment he whispered to God, "If I die now, it would be almost the perfect moment. This is the theme for which we had all been waiting for." President Mandela appointed Tutu to head a Truth and Reconciliation Commission tasked with investigating and reporting on the atrocities committed by both sides in the struggle over apartheid. Personal Life Tutu married a woman named Leah Nomalizo on July 2, 1955. They have four children and remain married today. Although he officially retired from public life in the late 1990s, Tutu continues to advocate for social justice and equality across the globe. In 2007, he joined The Elders, a group of seasoned world leaders including Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, Jimmy Carter and others, who meet to discuss ways to promote human rights and world peace. Desmond Tutu stands among the world's foremost human rights activists. Like Nelson Mandela, Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., his teachings reach beyond the specific causes for which he advocated to speak for all oppressed peoples' struggles for equality and freedom. Perhaps what makes Tutu so inspirational and universal a figure is his unshakable optimism in the face of overwhelming odds and his limitless faith in the ability of human beings to do good. "Despite all of the ghastliness in the world, human beings are made for goodness," he once said. "The ones that are held in high regard are not militarily powerful, nor even economically prosperous. They have a commitment to try and make the world a better place." Source: http://www.biography.com/people/desmond-tutu-9512516 |

Career / Lets Talk!! Are Nigerian Politicians More Hardworking Than Nigerian Graduates? by Mufasa1805(m): 2:35am On Jun 19, 2016 |
I Cried for the Future of this Great country when I saw this Tweet. Is it that our graduates don’t have sense and our senators are geniuses? Or how else do you explain that an average Nigerian graduate’s salary is 1/7th of that of a US graduate, while a Nigerian Senator’s salary is 8 times that of a US senator. I think the way out is to graduate in Nigeria, get a job in US and come back to become a senator here in Nigeria. LOL Or What do you think? Politics / Exposed!!! Fayose's Deceit by Mufasa1805(m): 9:27am On Jun 18, 2016 |
FIGURES DON’T LIE: ENOUGH OF FAYOSE’S DECEIT! • At inauguration, Fayose quoted N86bn as Ekiti debt. He later put it at N96bn, 68bn and now N31bn, but DMO in federal Ministry of Finance said it is N18b. • He later pleaded with Fayemi that that is how to play politics. N5 billion out of this has been paid by the Federal Government it was after this Fayose took another N21.6 billion loan •Fayose's wage bill is N1.7b and not N2.6b after he cancelled Fayemi YCAD scheme, 20,000 elderly social security scheme, 10,000 Youth Volunteers, 300 EKSTMA, 800 Peace corps at 50 per local government. What has Fayose done with monthly Allocation from the Federal Government totaling 20 months now? What has Fayose done with Money he obtained from Banks under Corporate Social Responsibility? How much? Only Fayose knows! • Average monthly retirement per month in civil service is 50. In 20 months, that's 1000 retirees from the service, yet Fayose claims to be paying N2.6 billion till now! • Fayose claimed that he discovered 500 ghost workers yet his wage bill remains the same! • Fayemi engaged close to 1,000 Political appointees, but Fayose has less than 100 and he has not made any new recruitment into the service Fayose takes N250 milion naira monthly as security vote which he doesn't spend on security! •He will never disclose that he has ever collected local government allocations from Abuja, which he has been collecting but has refused to pay LG workers for four months. • Fayemi paid September salary of LGA before leaving office and only owed teachers and civil servants one (1) month salary because Fayose threatened the banks not to pay •Fayemi's loans did not affect LGA federal allocation so why is Fayose owing Local Government workers 4 months salary? EKITI DEBTS • Fayose vowed never to borrow a kobo during his tenure and condemns Fayemi for borrowing beyond his tenure, Fayose has also borrowed N21.6 billion beyond his tenure exposing him as a hypocrite and liar! See Details below: a. N2billion CBN SME Micro credit loan approved by Adewale Ominrin led Assembly meant for artisans and Farmers which he didn’t give anybody b. N9.6billion bailout (70% of which he pocketed) c. N10 billion loan which he was supposed to use to pay workers salary but which he diverted to building a flyover so that he can embezzle money Total = N21.6 billion • Fayemi took loans to be paid within 7years (with 2018 as terminal date) as against Fayose's claim of 2036 to fund some regenerative projects like Ire Burnt Bricks, Civic Centre, Ikogosi Resort and Ero Dam, Ekiti Parapo Square (Pavillion), Oba Adejugbe General Hospital, a befitting Government House at Oke Ayoba, Funmilayo Olayinka Wellness and Cancr centre at EKSUTH et.c •Ekiti loan repayment is tied to IGR with average deduction of N450m and maximum of N650 but Fayose lied that N1.2billion is deducted monthly! • Fayose claims he collects N250m IGR monthly even though it is higher than that, in 20 months, that is N5bn. Fayose where is the money? •Which government account does Fayose pay Ekiti IGR? IGR is paid into secret accounts only known to him •He collected N5.2b Ecological fund but he has denied this till date even though Dayo Adeyeye as Works Minister under Jonathan confirmed this to the whole world! • Fayose received refunds on roads totalling N22.2bn as audited and published in 2013 financial statements by Fayemi but Fayose denied! • Fayose received N9.6bn bailout which was supposed to clear all outstanding salaries including, union deductions of N450m, severance package of N500m, furniture allowance of political appointees of N350m, Pensions and gratuities of N2.8bn and Leave Bonus and others. He never paid anyone! • He received September 2014 allocation of N3bn for state and N2.1 for LGAS. Why did he need bailout again? • How then did Fayose spend the bailout when primary school teachers, pensioners and political appointees have not • How then did Fayose spend the bailout when primary school teachers, pensioners and political appointees have not been paid? • What did Fayose do with the revenue from sale and lease of the following government properties: ? · Sale of government vehicles · Leasing of Ikogosi Warm Springs to his cronies · What is happening in Ire Burnt Bricks now? · Leasing of Abuja NANET SUITES · Sale of market stalls built with government money across the state Fayose where are all these monies? We have facts to show that Fayose can conveniently pay three months salary but he is deliberately punishing Ekiti workers. Fayose, why are you doing this to teachers and civil servants who supported you so much and heralded your second coming? Where is the 5 % percent statutory allocation for Obas which should be a first line charge? Why do you owe Kabiyesis arrears of salaries? Fayose is the first Governor to flash workers their salary through false alerts in banks just to show in his fake record that he has paid. This is wickedness of the highest order! EKITI PEOPLE SHINE YOUR EYES AND SHARPEN YOUR BRAINS! FAYOSE HAS BEEN FOOLING YOU! Courtesy : Committee For Ekiti Rebirth 2 Likes 1 Share |

Crime / Breaking: Militants Blow Up Agip Gas Pipeline In Bayelsa by Mufasa1805(m): 6:29am On May 18, 2016 |
Emmanuel Addeh in Yenagoa There were indications on Tuesday evening that armed militants operating in the Niger Delta may have again blown up a gas pipeline operated by Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) at Ogbembiri in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The latest attack makes it the umpteenth time oil and gas facilities belonging to the Italian oil giant would be breached in the state this year alone. The fresh attack by gunmen, it was learnt, occurred on the pipeline about 48 hours ago, raising questions within the community over why security agencies saddled with the responsibility of protecting oil installations are unable to stop the frequent breaches. Suspected ex-militants also recently attacked a pipeline carrying crude oil located at Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, resulting in an oil spill in the environment. During the latest attack, the gunmen reportedly stormed the community at about 9 pm on Sunday, traced the pipeline and ruptured it at the same point where it had been repaired after the last attack. While some sources said dynamites were used to blow up the pipeline, others said the gunmen deployed other mechanical devices to rupture the line along the axis. The pipeline said to be a major gas pipeline in the country, reportedly crosses Tumor community in Bomadi, Delta State, Ogbuasiri in Ekeremor Local Government Area and Ogbembiri in Southern Ijaw, both in Bayelsa State. “Agip awarded the contract for security surveillance and repairs of the pipeline in the event of a breach to a contractor from the community. “So the contractor enjoys the dual contract of protecting the pipeline and also repairing it whenever there is a leakage. But it is baffling how the pipeline increasingly comes under attack,” a source said. He added that it “is a major pipeline because it supplies gas for domestic consumption”, noting that Agip had spent a lot of money fixing it. While the pipeline is said to be relatively safe in other communities, it is continuously breached in the Southern Ijaw community, the source revealed. Business / Fear Over MPC Outcome Fuels Naira Appreciation by Mufasa1805(m): 6:18am On May 18, 2016 |
By Babajide Komolafe
The naira maintained its
upward trend in the parallel
market yesterday, appreciating
to N345 per dollar in response
to decline in demand for
dollars occasioned by anxiety
over the possible outcome of
the Monetary Policy
Committee (MPC) meeting
coming up next week. Vanguard investigation revealed that the parallel market exchange rate fell to N345 per dollar yesterday from N350 per dollar on Monday, implying appreciation of N5 for the nation’s currency. The naira has appreciated by N25 against the dollar since Friday when the parallel market exchange rate stood at N370 per dollar in response to anticipated increase in demand due to deregulation of petroleum products importation and rumours about imminent official devaluation of the naira by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Bureaux De Change operators attributed the increased appreciation of the naira to anxiety over the possible outcome of the MPC meeting scheduled to hold from Monday to Tuesday next week. “Demand for dollars is weak today because market participants, especially, buyers are anxious about the outcome of the MPC meeting”, said Aminu Gwadabe, President Association of Bureaux De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON). Confirming this development, Financial Derivatives Company Limited, said “Nigerians are extremely nervous about the possible outcomes of the next MPC meeting. This is because of a confluence of negative developments ranging from a sharp fall in the production of oil, deepening external reserves, spiralling inflation and sharply lower Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth. There has hardly been a time in the history of Nigeria that the Central Bank has been faced with such stark and hard choices. Unfortunately, there is no silver bullet. Reviewing the impact of the sharp increase in inflation rate to 13.6 percent in April on the financial markets and the outcome of the MPC meeting, “The Company stated, “The MPC is expected to seriously consider the consequence of high inflation on investor returns. A tighter monetary environment (hiking interest rates) could result in investors shifting to the fixed income market due to attractive interest rates. In addition, NIBOR and T-bill rates would be expected to increase. “Given the underperformance of the stock market with a negative YTD return of (6.35%), we expect capital outflow from the Nigerian bourse, as investors become attracted to high interest fixed income instruments. “We expect a cocktail of measures or a sequence of steps aimed at controlling inflation, maintaining currency stability and stimulating growth. The order in which these decisions will be taken is a subject of great uncertainty and anticipation.” Source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/05/fear-mpc-outcome-fuels-naira-appreciation/ |

Education / Fuel Hike: ASUU Declares Strike Nationwide by Mufasa1805(m): 10:43pm On May 17, 2016 |
Ademola Babalola in Ibadan National President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi has mobilized members of the union for strike and mass action commencing Wednesday to force the Federal Government to revert the pump price from N145 to N86.50. In a letter sent to members of the congress nationwide and read at the University of Ibadan Chapter where the Chairman, Dr Deji Omole mobilized members to get ready for mass resistance to what he called the obnoxious and callous policy of fuel price increment. According to Omole, the policy of subsidy removal was the most criminal ambush from the Mohammadu Buhari-led federal government to empower the rich and cripple the poor. The ASUU boss who said that the common denominator to all Nigerians is poverty added that the same APC government that failed to pay civil servants for months is now celebrating budget signing with the legalization of black market. Omole who noted that many state governors who now align with the removal of subsidy ran their states aground through wasteful spending added that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission should beam search lights on state governors. ASUU boss noted that the coup against the masses adding that since Nigeria runs motorized economy, Nigerians cannot be forced to carry the problems created by the rich and friends of government. ASUU president in the letter entitled “Increase in Pump price of Premium Motor Spirit to N145 perlitre: Proposal for Joint Action with NLC stated that ASUU members are called upon to according to our Union’s principles, fully respect Article 2 of the Constitution of ASUU; that our Union and members shall work for the protection and advancement of the socio-economic interests of the nation. Branch Chairpersons are to conduct emergency congress meetings on Tuesday 17 May 2016 to mobilise our members for the action commencing on Wednesday. All branches of ASUU nationwide are to comply” Ogunyemi anchored the position on “delayed, partially paid and in most cases unpaid salaries for a number of months by state, federal and local governments, disguised retrenchment of workers, especially by State Governments, in the name of verification exercise and endless hunt for ghost workers and heavy taxation”. Godswill Akpabio, the Minority Leader of the Senate, convened the emergency meeting of the party’s National Assembly Caucus to address numerous complaints that arose from the party’s nationwide congresses, some of which were marred by irregularities and legal battles. Sources told PREMIUM TIMES that the meeting was held to address the crises in seven of the 36 state chapters where the congresses turned out to be most problematic. Halfway into the meeting, which held behind closed doors in House Room 0.28 at 4:30 p.m., a brawl erupted between a former Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, now senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District, and Sopuluchukwu Ezeonwuka, a House member from Orumba North/South federal constituency in Anambra State. The disagreement among the lawmakers was over membership of a committee the Caucus decided to set up to proffer solutions to the stalemate in the state congresses ahead of the party’s national convention. Also involved in the face-off were Lynda Ikpeazu, who represents Onitsha North/South federal constituency, and Chukwuka Onyema, Deputy Minority Leader of the House, sources said. Some sources said there were actual exchange of blows by the feuding legislators while some said the four lawmakers merely exchanged verbal assaults for the most part of the meeting, with Mr. Onyema charging towards Mr. Ezeonwuka to land a slap on his face. “Mr. Onyema ran towards Mr. Ezeonwuka and attempted to punch him in the face,” a source said. “But other lawmakers quickly intervened and separated the two men from manhandling each other.” PREMIUM TIMES’ findings revealed the lawmakers were trying to maintain their individual strongholds of their party in their respective constituencies. Mr. Ezeonwuka confirmed the development to PREMIUM TIMES on Monday night. Mr. Ezeonwuka said the argument started after he objected to Mr. Onyema’s membership of a committee, saying he “cannot be a judge in his own case.” Mr. Ezeonwuka said Mr. Onyema had been repeatedly used by Ms. Oduah to manipulate elections within the party. “Onyema is the one that implemented all the Stella Oduah’s plans because he sees Stella Oduah as his God,” Mr. Ezeonwuka said. “But I told him that he’s an interested party and must not be a member of the committee.” “It was that time that Stella Oduah now stood up and said ‘who is that idiot?’” Mr. Ezeonwuka said Mr. Onyema charged towards him from the wooden rostrum to beat him in defence of Ms. Oduah. “He wanted to shout me down, but I told him I won’t shut up. Then he came down from the podium that he wanted to come and beat me, but I was just looking at him,” Mr. Ezeonwuka said. Mr. Ezeonwuka said Ms. Oduah is desperate because she’s “a weak politician.” “She’s now desperate because of her weakness and coming to Anambra State to talk nonsense. Is it because she was made a minister?” “I have been in the PDP since 1999 and I am a grassroots politician, unlike Stella Oduah who started her politics in Abuja. She has no structure in Anambra State, she’s just using her money to buy people, which is irrelevant to me.” “When Ms. Ikpeazu was trying to expatiate on the point I made, Stella Oduah started insulting her and they both starting insulting each other, you know women talk.” Mr. Ezeonwuka also told PREMIUM TIMES that the Caucus did not discuss anything about fuel price crisis, consequently punching holes in the claim made by House Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, that the members discussed and concluded that President Buhari’s administration must apologise to former President Jonathan because Mr. Buhari was part of those who opposed subsidy when Mr. Jonathan first attempted to deregulate the downstream sector in 2012. “We only discussed the party’s upcoming national convention and no issues about fuel crisis were raised during the meeting,” Mr. Ezeonwuka said. Ms. Oduah also confirmed her fight with the other lawmakers to PREMIUM TIMES, but denied it was a serious altercation. “Two people just disagreed on a subject, does that make it strange? In a meeting where you have almost two hundred people? “Somebody raised an opinion that I did not agree with. And it is bound to happen where you’re having meeting of this sort. “We just disagreed on a subject matter which I cannot disclose to you,” Ms. Oduah said. In his reaction, Mr. Onyema said Mr. Ezeonwuka was not in the country when the congresses were conducted, so he couldn’t have known all that transpired (at the acrimonious congress). “I did not have any brawl with him. But The said they wanted primaries and the other group said they don’t want primaries and they went ahead to conduct their own illegal primaries, “He wasn’t in the country, he went to the United States and just got back, he should have allowed those of us who have been on ground to explain to him what happened instead of going about making false accusations that somebody forged the results.” When PREMIUM TIMES reached Ms. Ikpeazu, she denied knowledge of the brawl, claiming she was working on some documents while the meeting was going on. “I had some urgent documents that I am working on so I wasn’t listening,” Ms. Ikpeazu said. “I know they had some disagreement but I don’t know those involved.” But this newspaper established clearly that she was part of the entire commotion at the meeting, and was merely being economical with the truth.
