Eleven days after the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) released a statement saying that there will be no increase in petrol pump price in March, the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, PPPRA, has fixed the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, also known as petrol, at N212.61 per litre, for the month of March.

According to the PPPRA’s PMS guiding price released to stakeholders, the N212.61 price is supposed to commence from March 1st and run till March 31st, 2021.

However, indications in the oil sector suggest that the Federal government through the NNPC has resumed subsidizing the product as it is still been sold at an average of N170 in petrol stations across the country

NNPC is said to be spending an average of N42 to subsidise a litre of the commodity for Nigerians. The PPPRA confirmed that fuel subsidy actually officially returned in February 2021, as according to the downstream oil sector regulator, the actual pump price of PMS for February was between N183.74 and N186.74 per litre, meaning that the Federal Government paid an average of N16 per litre for PMS in the month. However, in January 2021, the PPPRA disclosed that the price of the commodity was between N163.36 per litre and N166.36 per litre.


According to the PPPRA, based on the average cost for the period, February 1st to 28th 2021, and an average FMDQ Importer and Exporter (I&E) Naira/US Dollar Exchange Rate of N403.80, the expected retail price of PMS for March 2021, stands at N209.61 per litre and N212.61 per litre, being the lower and upper band respectively.


On February 28, NNPC released a statement through its spokesperson, Kenneth Obateru, assuring Nigerians that there would be no increase in pump price.

“Contrary to speculations of an imminent increase in the price of PMS in the country, the NNPC has ruled out any increment in the ex-depot price of petrol in March”, he noted.

Nigerian army has warned Sheikh Ahmed Gumi to stop inciting citizens with his comments.

Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi has been told to apply restraint when commenting on issues concerning the Nigerian army.

The army warned Gumi to stop making statements capable of inciting the public.

It said Gumi and the opinion merchants needed to exercise restraints in their comments because troops are not deployed for operations along ethnic or religious lines.

The caution coincided with the sacking of an Emir and a district head in Zamfara State for allegedly supporting bandits.

Army Public Relations Director, Brig.-Gen.Mohammed Yerima, in a statement yesterday specifically made reference to a viral video in which Gumi told bandits that soldiers deployed against them were non-Muslims.

The statement partly reads: “The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a viral video-clip showing the renowned and respected Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, alleging that non-Muslim soldiers were responsible for the attacks against bandits.

“In the video clip, the Islamic scholar was seen telling the bandits that the soldiers involved in most attacks against them were non-Muslims. He further stated that they should be aware that soldiers are divided into Muslims and non- Muslims.

“While the Nigerian Army would not want to join issues with the respected Sheik Gumi, it is however, important to restate that the Army as national institution does not deploy its troops along ethnic or religious lines.

“Therefore, Sheikh Gumi and other opinion merchants are please enjoined to exercise restraint not to drag the image and the reputation of one of the most reliable national institutions to disrepute.

“The Nigerian Army remains the pride of the nation and has continually defended the territorial integrity of this great nation. Comments suggesting to mudslide of the image and reputation of the Nigerian Army are not only inimical but tended towards creating bad blood amongst Nigerians.

“Furthermore, most operations conducted by the Nigerian Army were done in strict adherence to rules of engagement, code of conduct and respect for the fundamental human rights of the citizenry without any exception.

“ It is, therefore, disturbing that an opinion leader would deliberately want to disparage the Nigeria Army to portray it in bad light.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to seize this opportunity to advise opinion leaders to be more courteous while expressing their views, taking into cognizance, the imperative for national security, particularly at these difficult times when our gallant troops have redoubled their efforts to tackle the myriads of security challenges facing our dear nation.

“What our troops need now is public support to discharge their responsibility effectively and in the most professional manner.”

In Zamfara State, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) lauded Governor Bello Matawalle for removing the Emir of Maru, Abubakar China, and the District Head of Kanoma, Lawal Ahmed, for allegedly aiding banditry.

It also said it was impressed with the alleged arrest of a soldier and his girlfriend “for supplying arms and military uniforms to bandits.”

The ACF had a week ago called on Matawalle to name the people collaborating with kidnappers and bandits in the state. This was after the governor claimed that he knew those collaborating with bandits and that Nigerians would be shocked to know them.

The ACF, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Yawe, said, “We are happy to note that the government of Zamfara State has acted appropriately.

“A soldier and his girlfriend have been arrested in Zamfara State. The deputy chief of staff to the Zamfara state governor, who represented him at a press conference, said the arrest followed information provided by community-based intelligence.

“The governor has also approved the removal of Emir of Maeu, Abubakar China, and the district head of Kanoma, Lawal Ahmed, for allegedly giving support to bandits responsible for hundreds of deaths.

“The Emir and the district head had been on suspension since June last year and were under investigation, which found them guilty of the complaints from their subjects that they were collaborating with bandits and kidnappers.”

A football match in Ghana took a sad twist as a female referee was reportedly assaulted by a female footballer.

Referee Faizatu Jakpa was attacked and beaten up by a player of the Fabulous Ladies in the Ghana women’s league match between Fabulous Ladies and Kumasi Sports Academy.

The incident left Jakpa with a swollen face and scratches on her face. It is however unclear if the football club or player involved have been sanctioned.

A 20-year-old man identified as Ternenge Ayankaa Lab was stripped naked and publicly disgraced after he was accused of stealing chicken in Benue state.
The incident happened at Ugyie community in Vandeikya Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday, March 2.

The mob action has been widely condemned by members of the community on Facebook. One Labe Joyce said the young man didn't deserve the public disgrace for stealing only chicken.

We will rather lose our goods – Northern traders insist on continuing food blockade to the South


Northern traders under the aegis of Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDN) have vowed to continue the food blockade to the Southern part of the country, in spite of being at risk of losing their perishable goods.


Awwalu Aliyu, an official of the union who spoke to TheCable stated that the aim of the food blockade is not to starve Southerners but to protest against the killing and destruction of properties belonging to Northerners.


Aliyu who restated the group's claim of Northerners being killed and losing properties especially during the #EndSARS protest and the recent Shasha market crisis in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, added that it will be better for them to lose food items locked up inside trucks in Jebba, Niger state than losing their lives.


When asked if members of the union were not concerned about food items locked up inside trucks in Jebba, Niger state, going bad and leading to losses, Aliyu said;


“It would be better to lose the food items than to lose lives.
“You’re talking about losing goods; which one is better, to lose a life or to lose property? Losing property is better than losing a life.


“We prefer and our people will prefer to lose those farm items or goods than to continue losing their lives. If you are alive, you can plant another thing, you can rear another cattle. But if you’re dead, you can’t do that again. Only the living can go to the farm.


“We do not want to destroy anybody. We do not want to kill anybody. The number of Yorubas and Ibos that reside in Kano and Kaduna alone is far more than the number of northerners in the entire south-west, south-south and south-east.
“Also, the investments of Yorubas and Igbos in Kano and Kaduna, running into billions of naira is more than the entire investments of northerners in the south-west, south-east and south-south if you remove Dangote. Our people are only petty traders, shoe shiners, fingernail cutters, wheelbarrow pushers, okada riders and so on.


“Our people in the south don’t have what southerners have in the north. They have farmlands, buildings and a lot of properties that run into billions. We do not intend to touch a needle out of it. We do not intend to destroy anybody’s property. What we want is to have our people protected from being killed.”

There have been concerns over the whereabouts of Yakasai who disappeared on Friday evening in Kano State.



According to a report by The PUNCH, the Department of State Services on Saturday night confirmed that Salihu Tanko Yakasai is in its custody.

DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, disclosed this in a statement.

There have been concerns over the whereabouts of Yakasai who disappeared on Friday evening in Kano hours after he tweeted that that the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), should secure Nigerians or resign.

But the DSS in a statement said, “This is to confirm that Salihu Tanko-Yakasai is with the Department of State Services. He is being investigated over issues beyond the expression of opinions in the social media as wrongly alleged by sections of the public.”

Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Saturday sacked Yakasai for criticising the All Progressives Congress and the Buhari regime over the growing insecurity in the country.

Until his sacking, Yakasai, son of elder statesman, Tanko Yakasai, was Ganduje’s Special Adviser on Media.

Many Nigerians had called for the immediate release of Yakasai while global rights group, Amnesty International, amongst others had condemned his arrest and detention, insisting that freedom of speech is a democratic tenet.

An old tweet of Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari slamming ex President Goodluck Jonathan over Chibok Girls' abduction in 2015 has surfaced online.

Buhari defeated Jonathan in 2015 to end the 16-year rule of the People's Democratic Party since 1999.

Under Jonathan, about 300 girls were kidnapped from Government Girls Secondary School, on April 15, 2014, in Chibok town, Borno State.

Buhari, who was seeking Nigerians' support, had capitalised on the issue, slamming the Jonathan-led government over the girls' abduction.

In the tweet, Buhari had condemned the Jonathan-led government's perceived ineptitude to take drastic measures towards securing the release of some abducted school students.

"How Can 219 Girls Be Missing In Our Country, And Our Leader Appears Incapable Of Action? #ThingsMustChange," he had tweeted.





He was also quoted as saying his approach to the crisis "must begin with honesty as to whether the Chibok girls can be rescued.

"Currently, their whereabouts remain unknown. We do not know the state of their health or welfare, or whether they are even still together or alive," he added.

He had also used social media to continually call on former President Goodluck Jonathan to be decisive about the children's rescue, making it a major campaign promise when he becomes the President.

His tweet has sparked controversy, with many calling out his administration over the recent abduction of school children in Katsina, Niger and Zamfara states and growing insecurity in the country.
