THE WALKING DEAD “TS-19″ Season 1 Episode 6 – THE WALKING DEAD continues to blow my mind. I cannot express my sadness that this was the season finale and that the show will not be back until October of 2011.



“TS-19″ was just as great as all the previous episodes of the series. When I watch The Walking Dead, I forget that I’m not watching a movie, and am ALWAYS disappointed when the credits roll.
We were left last week with Rick and company being let into the CDC (truth be told, the white light shining from the door looked like an entrance to heaven, but I digress). The finale picks up in this exact spot, with everyone rushing to get inside before the unknown person decides to shut the doors.

Once settled, the survivors are treated to wine, food, beds, and even hot water. Seeing everyone’s faces at the thought of a hot shower was something that struck me. While I like to think I’m prepared for the zombie apocalypse (Shut up, it could happen!!) the hot water thing never really occurs to me. To see something that we take for granted every day treated as a luxury was eye opening.
I really, REALLY enjoyed the opening flashback scene with Shane in the hospital attempting to get Rick out. It was nice to see that he really hadn’t lied to Lori about Rick being dead. He had honestly thought he was, and by the looks of it, leaving him there was NOT an easy thing for him to do.
What was up with the military shooting the hospital staff?? I understand that it was a panic filled, high stress situation, but to just open fire on innocent people? That was hard for me to watch.
Shane needed to be shown in a positive light to gain some sympathy (at least from me), which I think made the scene with him and Lori in the rec room all the more difficult to watch.

I understand the guy feels responsible for Lori and Carl, and is absolutely right if he had told her that Rick was alive, the three of them would probably be dead, but to attack her? I don’t care how much he had to drink, he needed to get control FAST.
I think the reason I love The Walking Dead (aside from the show just being awesome) is the way that it shows real people, from all walks of life, dealing with a life or death situation; and they all have to learn to co-exist.
The friendship between Andrea and Dale is amazing writing. When he sat in that chair across from her, ready to die right along with her… that was some GOOD writing. I don’t find it hard to believe at all that you would become attached to a stranger in that situation to the point of wanting to say with them no matter what. I’m REALLY happy that they got out of the building when they did, I’m not sure how long the RV would last without Dale.
There were a lot of great lines that really made me pause and think in this episode.
When Dr. Jenner was showing everyone the test subject and explained that the lights were “the part that makes you – you” and the effect that the virus had on the “you” portion of the brain was getting into some deep theology… which was punctuated by Jacqui asking if the virus was “the wrath of God”.

I could go on for PAGES about the theology theories that I have with this series, but I’ll spare you.
Dr. Jenner also had a fantastic piece of dialogue that coincided perfectly with the finale: “We always think there’s more time. Then it runs out.”
Suffice to say that nothing has ever been truer for Rick and his people than that statement. I found myself almost off of my couch in anticipation wondering how they were going to break through the glass windows. And sighed audibly in relief when Carol pulled the grenade out of her purse.
Like I said at the beginning of this review – I forget that I’m watching a TV show when I watch The Walking Dead – and seeing the creative team BLOW UP THE CDC was an epic piece of television and one that I’m going to have to watch again.

I cannot believe the season is over and that we have to wait almost a full year before we find out what Dr. Jenner whispered in Rick’s ear (speculations? Let me know!), before we find out where the survivors are headed, and just for another weekly zombie movie!



I feel that a thanks to AMC is needed that they decided to air this brilliant show is in order, there really isn’t anything like The Walking Dead on TV anywhere (and it surpasses a lot of zombie movies, too… and I have seen A LOT of zombie movies), and I myself cannot WAIT for season 2.

FLASHBACK. Shane runs through a CHAOTIC hospital, asking for help. The army OPENS FIRE on a group of doctors and nurses. Zombies suddenly appear -- and take a bite out of the army. Shane ducks into a room where Rick lies in a coma. "If you're going to wake up, you better do it now!" Shane tells his friend. It's no use. Rick continues to slumber , so Shane reluctantly leaves, blocking the door to Rick's room in the process.



PRESENT DAY. Rick, Shane and the rest off the survivors enter the CDC. It appears to be abandoned , when Dr. Jenner materializes from a dark corner. "Is anybody infected?!" Jenner demands. "You all submit to a blood test. That's the price of admission." Rick agrees. Jenner then leads the group underground , and explains that the rest of the doctors are dead or gone. A computer -- which has a female voice -- has been his only company. Later, the survivors indulge in a few generous glasses of wine before Jenner introduces the group to its quarters -- complete with hot water!



Everybody has a hot shower and continues to drink, though it's clear that Andrea is not well. She vomits in the toilet and weeps. "It's over," she tells Dale. "There's nothing left!" Dale prefers to see the end of world (as we know it) as a chance to start over , but Andrea isn't buying what he's selling. A drunken Rick, meanwhile, has a heart-to-heart with Jenner. Basically, the sheriff explains that the group didn't have any real chance of surviving on the "outside." "It will all be OK," Jenner tells him , not convincingly.



A drunken Shane, in the meantime, confronts Sarah. "I'm going to tell you a few things and you're going to listen to me," Shane slurs. "How can you treat me like this?!" He explains that there was a massacre at the hospital , and he had no choice but to leave Rick. Then it gets ugly. "I love you," Shane says before aggressively groping Sarah. She fights back -- and PUSHES him away, scratching his neck in the process. Ashamed and angry, Shane storms from the room. Sarah tries to pull herself together.

The next morning, T-Dog makes powdered eggs for the survivors. Shane enters , and tries to conceal the scratch marks on his neck. He offers a lame excuse about the marks being self inflicted. After breakfast, Jenner asks the computer to replay "TS-19," a program standing for "test subject 19." The test subject was bitten by a zombie and volunteered to have his process monitored. The group watches as the subject's brain synapses corrode and shutdown , then flicker back to life during "resurrection." Essentially, the brain stem reawakens, but nothing else. "The neocortex -- the human part -- that doesn't come back," Jenner says. "Just a shell driven by mindless instinct." Alas, Jenner knows almost nothing more -- and is nowhere close to finding a cure.

Dale then notices a clock that is counting down to zero. Jenner explains that the basement generator will eventually run out of fuel. And what happens then? Nothing good -- that's for sure. Rick leads a group to the basement to check out the generators. They discover a bunch of empty fuel drums. Moments later, the air conditioning stops. Jenner, meanwhile, has shaved, combed his hair and put on a tie. He stares at a framed photo of his dead wife when the lights suddenly go out. The CDC is shutting itself down. Thirty minutes remain on the clock. Jenner then explains that the French were the last to work on a possible cure. "They thought they were close to a solution," Jenner says. Unfortunately, the power eventually ran out , just like it is now.

Panicked, Rick tells the group to pack their bags -- it's time to go. But Jenner seals the door, locking everybody inside. He explains that it would be pointless to run. The computer has locked all the exit doors on the street level. The CDC houses multiple strains of deadly viruses -- and is designed to make sure nothing escapes when power is lost. Basically, the facility will implode, killing everyone inside. Awful understanding dawns on the survivors' faces. "Its better this way," says Jenner, who has resigned himself to dying in less than 30 minutes. "It sets the air on fire. No pain."



Shane and Daryl try to chop down the door with axes , but it's no good. "There is no hope," Jenner says. "There never was , this is our extinction event." Shane, however, isn't going to go down without a senseless fight. He begins SHOOTING up the room with a shotgun -- making much noise, but accomplishing nothing. Rick wrestles the gun from his hand and SLAMS his friend to the ground. "Are you done?" Rick asks. Responds Shane: "I guess we all are." After a moment of silence, Rick accuses Jenner of keeping secrets. The doctor then admits that TS-19 was his wife, who ran the facility. "Your wife didn't have a choice , you do," Rick pleads. "That's all we want: a choice!"



So Jenner opens the sealed door, but warns that the topside exits remain shut. "There's your chance," Jenner says. "Take it." He then shakes Rick's hand , and whispers something in the sheriff's ear. As the group rushes out the door, Jacqui and Andrea announce that they are staying. They would rather die an instantaneous and painless death than face the outside.



"This isn't what Amy would want for you!" Dale tells Andrea. The rest of the survivors, meanwhile, have rushed to the front lobby. They desperately try to break the glass, but it withstands even a shotgun blast. Carol then pulls a grenade from her purse. Rick takes the grenade, sets it against the glass entrance , and pulls the pin.



BOOM! The glass BREAKS, creating an exit.

Back in the command center, Dale continues to try to convince Andrea to leave with him. She refuses -- so Dale sits down. "If you're staying, I'll stay, too," Dale tells Andrea. The group leaps outside -- and immediately begins SHOOTING zombies. They head for their caravan of cars. Just then, Dale and Andrea emerge from the building. Both have decided to live, after all. There is suddenly a WHINE in the air. Time is up. The survivors take cover as the CDC EXPLODES in an awesome bloom of fire.



A short time later, the group drives away from the destruction. A black cloud of smoke blocks the sun -- an ominous sight for our departing heroes.

I wasn't too impressed with last Sundays episode, it didn't have too much of an edge like the others. The spend almost 5 mins saying bye to the the dude the left to die.

The season finale is next week hopefully it's better. I should have just waited for it to come out on Netflix or HULU PLUS then just watch the freaking thing in one weekend.

Yeah u're right considering it was just talk talk throughout, no real zombie action but I think what the director was trying to do was to bring out the human element of the story, people grappling wit whether they should loose their humanity and be worse than the zombies or be decent in a very insane world. A classical example of dat was when Andrea was waiting for Amy to turn to the undead b4 she puts her away, the acting there was first rate!

Dawn. Rick hunches on a grassy hill overlooking Atlanta. He tries to hail Morgan on the radio and warn him. "Atlanta is not what we thought," Rick urges. "Do not enter the city. It belongs to the dead now." The sheriff then gives the location of the survivors before giving up. No contact with Morgan has yet been made.



Andrea, meanwhile, continues to mourn Amy, who lives dead on the camp ground. Lori approaches. "We all cared about her," Lori says. "We'll be as gentle as we can." In other words, the body must be discarded. Andrea doesn't respond. Rick tries his luck -- and Andrea points a gun at him for his efforts. "Sorry," Rick whispersthen slowly backs away.



The clean-up continues. Daryl tries to drag one of the human dead into a fire, but Glenn won't allow it. The humans are to be buried -- decent like. "You left my brother for dead," Daryl growls. "You had this coming." Ouch.



More bad news follows. Jim was bitten in the skirmish. He pleads with Jacqui not to tell, but she announces his wound to the camp. "I'm OK, I'm OK," Jim insists, but the bite is deep. He isn't OK. Naturally, Daryl suggests putting a pickaxe into Jim's head, but Rick protests, insisting "We don't kill the living!" Instead, Rick suggests the group head to the CDC -- on the off chance that a cure can be found. Nobody particularly likes the idea, but no one argues either.



Later, Dale has a heart-to-heart conversation with Andrea. He explains that, after his wife died of cancer, he didn't care about anybody until he met Andrea and Amy. Andrea is touched. She gently lays Amy's birthday gift -- a necklace and pendant -- across the dead woman's bloody neck.



Carol, in the meantime, volunteers to sink a pickaxe into the head of her (abusive) dead husband. She does so -- and then does it again and again. Something tells us that Carol is working out past frustrations.



Suddenly, Amy opens her eyes. Is she alive?! Not exactly. "Amy, I'm sorry I always thought there would be more time," Andrea whispers. Before Amy can bite into her sibling, Andrea puts a gun to her temple. "I love you," she whispers before shooting undead Amy through the brain.



Later, Shane questions Rick's decision to leave the group and attempt to rescue Merle. It appears a power struggle between the longtime friends could be brewing. But there's no time for a pissing match now. The group gathers to bury its dead (in spite of Daryl's repeated objections) -- and Rick makes a promise to his boy: "I won't leave again , not for anything." Lori, meanwhile, questions the logic of going to the CDC on a "hunch." A decision will have to be made quickly, however. Poor Jim is looking terrible. The sick man coughs and spits into a bucket. Lori eventually opts to support her husband, telling Shane that they should trust Rick's "gut." Shane is visibly disappointed.

Later, Rick and Shane strike out into the woods to search for zombies. They argue over the best course of action. Shane is obviously upset for reasons (his affair with Lori in Rick's absence) that he doesn't mention. The two then split up in search of the undead. From a distance, Shane points his gun at his friend, but doesn't fire. The next morning, Rick tries Morgan again on the radio, explaining his plan to head to the CDC. Again, Morgan doesn't answer. Shane, meanwhile, explains how the caravan will work when Morales announces that he won't be coming. Instead, the survivor and his family will go to Alabama, where they have kin. "I have to do what's best for my family," he explains.

So everybody minus the Morales family climb into cars, trucks and a camper and drive. In the back of the RV, Jim moans in pain. Naturally, they don't get far before the camper overheats. Shane volunteers to ride ahead to a gas station and see if a replacement part can be found. Rick then visits Jim, who asks to die. "I want this," he says. "Leave me here it's my decision." Moments later, the group carries Jim to a nearby tree. Rick offers Jim a pistol, but the sick man refuses it. They then leave Jim to the elements.



Cut to a flickering video feed. A man introduces himself as Jenner, who drinks from a CDC coffee mug. He lives underground and searches for a cure -- but there has been no progress. End of transmission.

We then see Jenner, wearing a full contamination suit, studying samples of the undead flesh and listening to classical music. The man is exhausted -- and he accidently knocks over a test tube. Alarm bells begin to sound. Jenner hustles to the door and it slams shut behind him. Suddenly, the lab room bursts into flames. A robotic voice announces that "decontamination is complete." Jenner hangs his head. His fresh samples have just been destroyed. No more tests. Still no cure.

Later, Jenner drinks wine. "I think tomorrow I'm going to blow my brains out," he says into a monitor. "But tonight I'm getting drunk." The camera pulls back to reveal that Jenner is alone in a vast and high-tech underground facility. Outside, the land around the CDC is littered with corpses -- hundreds of them. The group of horrified survivors weaves through the bodies toward the door. Inside, Jenner spots the survivors on a security monitor. He is shocked. Rick looks into the camera and begs for help. Jenner hesitates, struggling with how to respond to the survivors' plea, and then finallly opens the door from the inside.

Who says Criticism is not working?

The Lagos State Government has adopted a new system of fixing deplorable roads in the state.


In recent months, some residents have expressed displeasure over the state of roads across the metropolis, which prompted PUNCH METRO to do two-series story on the deplorable conditions of the roads.




But due to the negative publicity that the stories generated, the state government has now come up with a new integrated approach to rehabilitating existing roads.


Under the new approach, three critical agencies of the government are now involved in the rehabilitation and management of the roads simultaneously. They are the Lagos Public Works Corporation, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority.


PUNCH METRO gathered that the idea was to ensure that the three institutions would complement one another.


The Executive Chairman, LPWC, Mr. Gbenga Akintola, said, “Essentially, the ‘zero tolerance for potholes and craters’ programme embarked upon by the government can only be meaningful if the three organisations work hand-in-hand with one another.”


Findings show that work has begun on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, part of Agege Motor Road, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway (Lagos end) and Ikorodu Road, as well as some neighbourhood roads.


It was gathered that under the new approach, asphalt would no longer be used to patch roads that are susceptible to flood, but instead, interlocking stones are now being used, while roads that are prone to erosion and flooding will now have stone base, with fibre mat laid underground to prevent early deterioration.


Akintola said, “Based on the expert advice, and the current engineering practices in road management, some identified spots will require different materials. Indeed, there is no excuse for waiting for favourable weather before embarking on road maintenance.


“The mandate from Governor Babatunde Fashola is that, as much as possible, all roads in Lagos must be in a better state.”


Some of the residents, who spoke with our correspondent, advised the government not to wait till the roads become impassable before embarking on their rehabilitation, noting that a routine maintenance programme should be put in place to ensure all-year round management of road infrastructure.


Mr. Musibau Adeagbo, a resident of Ijeshatedo said, “The governor should direct the relevant agencies of government to evolve an all-year road maintenance programme.


“He should also look with pity on the suburbs instead of concentrating on the highbrow areas of the metropolis because most roads in the suburbs are in an appalling condition.”


A resident of Idimu, Mr. Kayode Odugbesan, lamented the deplorable state of roads in Isolo-Ikotun axis, saying that plying the road was stressful.


He said, “People who stay around here have been suffering. To get out of Idimu through Isolo in the morning is hellish. The stress is even more when returning in the evening because from Iyana Isolo to Idimu, it takes an average of two and half hours to get home, a distance that should not take more than 10 minutes ordinarily.


“The slow pace of construction work on the Jakande Estate Road has compounded the problem because all vehicles going into the estate and those coming out are forced to use one lane, and the lane is in a shambles.”


Another resident of the area, who declined to give his name, urged the state government to compel the local government and local council development authorities to compliment its efforts by taking care of roads within their domain.


“It is only when this is done that what the state government is doing at present can be meaningful,” he added.

Ngozi whose age was put at 27 thought she had found her heart throb. She was in love; every other thing probably came second in her world while her lover, Victor who was said to be in his mid- 30s took the first position.



He meant everything to her. She demonstrated this in her actions and utterances because she lived and laboured for him. Her world apparently revolved around Victor.

But like the saying goes, you only know those you love, you don’t with all certainty know those that love you.

That was the story of Ngozi.  Convinced that she had found her Mr Right she probably became blind to any observation from a third party on the relationship when it contrasted with her feeling and understanding of what she was into.

In  economic terms, she played the role of a man in the relationship.  She sold vegetable for a lady at a spot styled Fruit Market on Kaduna Street in Port Harcourt to eke out a living.

Nobody could really say how she met her lover but Ngozi rented a small apartment, not the size of a standard one-room, on Ogbunabali area of Port Harcourt.  The apartment was probably what her meagre take home from hawking vegetable for her employee at the Fruit Market could afford.

Her lover allegedly painted the picture of a homeless young man before her. So she accepted his plea to  live with her in the poorly ventilated and lighted room.

While Ngozi would wake up in the morning and head straight to her vegetable business, neighbours around said Victor would hang around the compound till noon time and then take a stroll out to no specific place only to come back in the evening when Ngozi would have been back.  Ngozi on her way back would buy some food items for meals at home.

They would eat and sleep off. It became the routine neighbours were aware off.
On May 27 this year, the story changed.  They both came in that Thursday evening.

According to Victor she prepared food, they ate after which “I had marathon sex with her”. Later she slept off.  He said in the midnight he stealthily opened the door to get a rod and came back in.

The rod on his right hand, he looked at her cheerful face on the bed and the thought of killing her flooded his mind. He said he raised the rod to hit her but suddenly as if she had a sign, she shifted on the bed, apparently to change her sleeping position.

This caused him to wait a while to thoroughly observe if she was awake. Satisfied that she was in deep sleep, her lover said he raised the rod and brought it down  very hard on her head.

From her sleep, the girl screamed  “Jesus”. And quickly he went for her neck, the intention being to complete the job by  strangling her with one of her clothes lying on the floor. He said he applied his weight on a pillow he had already used to cover her nose and mouth.

And gradually his lover gave up the ghost.  After killing her, he remained with the corpse in the room till morning when he was sure the main gate in the compound would have been opened.

Quietly, he locked the door and sneaked away.  A day after, being the 29 while the nation was marking its democracy day, he resurfaced in the compound this time with a taxi driver.

He went to the room, forced the remains of his deceased lover into a waste bin but he had difficulty in doing this because of rigor mortis had set in. He had to rush out to get a big bag and forced the corpse into it.

And assisted by the taxi driver they deposited it in the boot of the car. It is not clear if the taxi driver knew what was in the bag.  Together they drove to a burrow pit on Ada George area to dump it.

Before he left with the big bag neighbours were already getting suspicious that something fishy was going on. When they asked him of his girl he said she was on admission at the state owned Braithwaite Memorial Hospital.

One of the neighbours told the Vanguard Metro that when he zoomed off with the taxi he quickly ran to the female ward at BMH to verify if she was truly admitted there. He said he combed the hospital for her but could not find her. So when he came back he told his other neighbours about his suspicion.

They had to peep through the window into her room and what they saw on the floor rattled them. “There was blood everwhere. And quickly we concluded that he had killed the girl,” he said.

Meantime, after disposing the corpse, Victor came back to clean up the room. As he stepped into the apartment the neighbours again demanded to know the whereabouts of his girl friend.

This time he sensed that they were becoming suspicious and he took to his heels. Already the landlord of the compound had been alerted on phone about the development.

And he had instructed that the neighbours should hold him pending when he returned from his business place. Like a wounded lion, Victor ran for his life. At a point he shook off those chasing him.

The landlord who does not want his name in print said when he got to a junction close to his house he saw some of those he asked to hold the suspect. They told him that Victor had escaped. While they were still rubbing minds on what next to do he said  Victor was sighted some metres away running towards their direction.

Under his instruction they all ducked behind his car  And as the Victor ran close to the spot they pounced on him. Some security men around the traffic light stepped in immediately, threatening to shoot Victor after he confessed to the murder. He told the gathering there that he did not regret his action.

When asked why he killed the girl, he told the crowd that it was because his late lover was always buying cheap clothes for him with her money.

The clothes, according to him, made him appear shabby before her whenever they went to church on Sundays.

He said he would have fled after killing her but he had to come back to dispose of the corpse because he did not want the family of the deceased girl to perform any ritual on it that would make her ghost to start haunting him.

He later led  the crowd to the burrow pit where he dumped the corpse. Those around had to exhume the corpse which was already fast decomposing.

It is not clear how the case is being handled at press time but Vanguard Metro gathered that Victor was in prison custody. Nobody could say if he was being tried or if he was remanded in custody on account of his confession.

Meanwhile, some people who spoke to the Vanguard Metro on the incident said they alerted rights groups in the state when it happened but they were disappointed by their lack of response.

“They did not show any interest probably because there was no donor agency fund for such. This is why I disagree with most of them when they say they are fighting for the people because they only come out when they have donor agency funds on an issue,” one of them lamented to the Vanguard Metro.

From all indications, the yearnings of those familiar with the incident is that justice should be done on the matter. “It is possible the family of the deceased may not have the means to pursue justice on this matter but it should not be traded with,” one of them said.

According to CNN, a coup d'etat has just taken place in Thailand by the country's military. They took advantage of the absence of the Prime Minister who is far away in New York attending the UN session. He has since went on National TV to declare a state of emergency.
