Most of us doctors have alot of grievances against medical practice in Nigeria. From poorly equipped facilities to poor motivation and low salaries to high mortality rates to high incidence of brain drain. Most times we only talk of these things amongst ourselves and anyone who cares to listen. People hardly know more except what Govt. tells them. www.naijamedico.com is a place where you can talk freely about your grievances, opinion and views in a free uninhibited manner for the whole world to see and know the truth! Who knows, our next health minister might even be there too!

Do you have any idea that only 20% of children in Nigeria are in primary school? Most of our future leaders will be unable to read and write. Take a closer look, our health, educational and power sectors have completely crumbled. We as a nation instead of marching forward have succeeded in marching backwards to an almost immediate post civil war era!! angry

ChiefS, I don't have all her medical information so whatever I say is based on what you tell me. Only her doctors can see the full picture.

A c-section can be carried out for a variety of reasons and both reasons mentioned above (high B.P. in pregnancy and prolonged labour) both qualify especially in extreme cases. Still, it doesn't rule out that possibility of a c-section in the next pregnancy.

My advice? Her next pregnancy must be booked in a hospital (General or Teaching), closely monitored and delivery must be in a hospital, preferably where she booked. That way, should the need for a c-section arise, it can be done safely. Remember, Maternal mortality (the rate at which pregnant women die) is very high in Nigeria (because of our poor healthcare status) and you don't want this close person to add to the statistics

Happy naming ceremony chiefS!

@ChiefS, her having another C-section is dependent on the reason for which the previous one was done. The 18 months is to allow her more time to recover and be fully prepared for the stresses of another pregnancy

@chineduleo,
Unfortunately, low sperm count hardly presents with any physical symptoms. It is usually discovered accidentally during a semen analysis when a couple complains of inability to conceive after over 1 year of frequent, regular unprotected sexual intercourse.
Different treatment modalities exist depending on the exact cause. In developed countries, assisted reproduction is used to solve this problem. This technology is available in nigeria but it is rather expensive. It involves taking the man's sperm cells from his semen and directly introducing it to the woman's eggs either inside out outside her body.
Many factors contribute to low sperm count but some common ones in this environment include wearing tight underpants/trousers, untreated testicular/scrotal conditions whether acute or not e.g. torsion of testes, having mumps in childhood, untreated STIs, etc. Infact, a medical expert from UCH Ibadan just alluded to "Okada" riding as a cause of low sperm count!

@mikkyangel, Myasthenia gravis is a serious disease in which your body's immune system behaves abnormally by attacking your body's cells - in this case, some tiny receptors between your nerves and muscles. It must not be taken lightly as it can in extreme circumstances result in death. Considering the gravity of this disease, and the severe side effects of the drugs you mentioned (as well as others required which you didn't) I advice that you work hand in hand with your physician, preferably a neurologist in a teaching hospital.

sad

During the easter weekend, I came across about 6 medical doctors who want to migrate to the U.S. @ are currently in the residency program, 4 have refused to enter into it and one is a fresh graduate. What is the government waiting for? Our health system is fashioned after the British structurally and partly functionally. Why is her government unwilling to invest in the healthcare sector in a similar manner? More than 60% of Nigerian trained doctors are outside her shores. 50% of the rest are in Lagos, most of whom are about to leave. It is pathetic!

Hi Nairalanders,
and to the docs in the house (Balogun, Naijaking etc) welldone guys.

I am a medical doctor myself (from www.naijamedico.com) , based in Lagos and wish to give you guys a hand from time to time. So help me God

@big spif, it seems you have constipation with resultant hard feces which can cause you to spend a lot of time in the toilet, as well as experience strange things like "growth protruding" from your anus. Hard feces can cause these. It can also cause painful conditions in you anus if you don't seek medical attention. For all we know, you may have hemorrhoids or other scary things.

My advice? Change your diet. Start with a meals that form little or no stool (soft rice, pap) for about a week. A tablespoon of liquid paraffin three times daily has been known to be helpful. After that, eat meals high in fibres (e.g. vegetables, carrots, cucumbers, meat etc). Reduce the amala or akpu. This should held with the constipation and nip the problem in the bud. Should it persist after 2 weeks, go the the hospital. If at anytime you see blood in your stool, go to the hospital immediately.

As for the knee pain, you haven't given me much to work with e.g. have you sustained any injury on the knee before? How long ago since you last exercised? Did you jump from a height and land on your feet recently? Do you participate in any outdoor sporting event? So many questions. Hope you find these helpful

Cheers

Dear Nairalanders, I wish to respectfully introduce to you Nigeria's Online Medical Community called "Naijamedico".

It is a site that we hope will bring together all medical students and doctors from Nigeria wherever they may be. We believe that in providing a means of communication amongst ourselves, our generation of medical practitioners will improve our lot by being liberated from the limitations imposed on us by our environment, repositioning ourselves to becoming truly global doctors, succeeding in every area of endeavor we may so desire. We believe that if we heed the advice of those who have treaded a along a path before us, we are unlikely to make the same mistakes that they did, provided that the advice is available to us. Doctors in other developed countries have made a lot of progress individually and collectively through their own online communities, so why can't we? We believe that this is a HUGE dream and thus have pledged a life time commitment to see it through.

Registered members get to enjoy the following
-free downloading of Past questions (Primaries for now) from our Free Downloads Centre
-free publicity of their events/activities to all other doctors/visitors as well as potential sponsors

Hi everyone,

Just read an interesting piece about some state governments employing foreign doctors to fill in the gap created by declining numbers of doctors in Nigeria (www.naijamedico.com/blog). This quick fix mentality is only as useful as repetitive dialysis in a renal failure patient - instead of spending money fixing the problem once and for all, they'd rather use a quick fix, in the long run spending more and more money achieving nothing. Me self, I go jand oh!
