Most herbalist blame Staph for everything evil, from having stubborn children to a troublesome landlord!

Staph actually refers to a microbe Staphylococcus aureus. It has other relatives like Staphylococcus albus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus, all of which cause various specific disease entities in immuno-competent and immuno-compromised individuals. I suggest you stop paying attention to herbal practitioners, perhaps they will interpret your inattention as caused by staph wink

Yinka Craig, Sunny Okosun and Gani were diagnosed with various kinds of Cancer abroad. They all were initially misdiagnosed in Nigeria - e.g. Gani who is receiving treatment for lung cancer was initially misdiagnosed with pneumonia!!! Where on earth are we headed too? Misdiagnosis isn't new but this is a record!!!

U1, I know your question isn't directed at me but I'm curious when you say three tablespoonful of groundnut, do you mean the actual nuts or its paste? To the best of my knowledge, I cannot relate groundnut consumption with eye affectation except perhaps a truckload of pimples interfering with your sight (lol)

What on earth do you mean by blood toxicity? Sounds like a herbal practitioners lexicon!!!

I think its about time the Govt declared an emergency in the health sector. The inaction seems to me like what an ostrich does when it sees danger approaching, it hides its head in the sand, believing that the problem will go away,

@U1, thanks men, I appreciate that.

@Aladunni, thanks too, but I'm sorry to disappoint you that I'd prefer to keep our lines of communication here. Many people benefit from our discussions here and we must not loose sight of that fact.

Regarding how long it will take for her to completely heal after surgery, so many factors are involved here e.g. her age, whatever medications she is has being taking or is currently taking, any other coexisting conditions etc. Her sickle cell disease state predisposes her to delayed wound healing and that as well as her age may contribute to also delaying the rate at which her bones will recover. One thing is sure, she will be bedridden for a long while and it is best she as well as her loved ones are prepared for that. Even after she has shown improvement, she will be "retrained" on how to walk by physiotherapists and this may be a long and difficult process. What is important is that her loved ones are around her and support her all the way!!

Have a great day guys!!

Naijaking? Balogun? KathyEkiti? When are you guys coming over?

Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Naijamedic(m): 6:01pm On Apr 09, 2008
@fodiyo,

I suspect you have a condition called "anal fissure", though this is a suspicion. It could be an abscess (anal or around the anus). There may or may not be a hemorrhoid there as well.

I think a change in diet might be in order, if you can stand it - that is eating meals that form low residue (mainly pap and soft boiled rice) for about a week. This will "appease" the constipation you experience, the primary cause of the "wound" I suspect you have in your anus. It will allow the wound there try to heal. If after 3-4 days, you will need to see a surgeon to deal with it decisively.

@Aladunni
avascular necrosis refers to "death of an organ or tissue" as a result of shutting off of its blood supply, in the absence of infection. It commonly occurs in people with blood anomalies e.g. sickcle cell disease, and people who are on steroids for a long time. AVN of the hips means that the bone at the point where the thigh and the hips meet is dead. For her to move, she'll need to have an artificial hip put in place. Hip replacement surgeries are being done successfully in several teaching hospitals like UCH Ibadan, UNN Nsukka, UCTH Calabar etc and on private basis by suitably qualified orthopedic surgeons.
Like most cases in Nigeria, the relatively high failure rate is as a result of the poor compliance to the surgeons advise. Other times, its because of late presentation to the health facility, allowing the disease to advance to a "point of almost or no return". Pele.

I'll recommend that she takes the surgery, and that she should make a hematologist (as well as an obstetrician in case she plans to have another child) her best friend.

@Chineduleo

the result of the test tells me that, like most Nigerian's she suffers from both Diabetes mellitus and Hypertension. For these, she needs to work closely with her personal physician and other healthcare workers because these illness will by with her till the end.

Fortunately, it seems that her kidneys are unaffected by either of them.

Her lipid profile seems okay but may be on the rise.

What's important is that she religiously takes her anti-hypertension and anti-diabetic medication, to keep tabs on her lipid profile, to exercise as much as she can tolerate, to eat healthily on the advice of a dietitian (e.g. reduce her salt intake), and see her personal physician regularly. She must take extra care to prevent any injuries to her feet as such wounds will not heal and often result in amputation - she must never wear tight fitting shoes, never walk barefooted, never walk into a dark room, etc. She should be told more about these things by her personal physician.

I suggest that you check yours as well, kpelle

@enque,
I think you'll need to apply soap and water till it lathers, then shave gently. Don't forget the sharp blade,
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Naijamedic(m): 12:24pm On Apr 07, 2008
@enque,
if you have too much money, you could have all the hair strands there zapped to their buds with laser. That way, they'll never bother you again.

If you are like me, looking for daily bread, well, shaving cream works for some, especially when used properly. Use of a shaving stick with a sharp blade also helps along with after shave. I know some lucky individuals who only use soap and water to moisturize their underarms before shaving, and some luckier ones who don't moisturize there at all. Whatever you decide, be careful not to injure the bumps cos if they become infected, na wahala be that!!!
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Naijamedic(m): 9:47am On Apr 07, 2008
@U1,
there are quite a number of possibilities based based on your age, gender, occupation, immediate environment etc. I won't mention any examples so as not to scare you. You really should talk to a physician who will also conduct a physical examination and carry out specific tests to nail the illness.
Health / Re: Doctor in the House: Free Medical Advice Available by Naijamedic(m): 9:03am On Apr 07, 2008
U1:

Hello everyone. I was wishing someone could tell me the reliability of the widal reaction test for typhoid fever. Due to fatigue and slight loss of weight (because I dey lepacious), I took the test twice (about a year interval), and after treatment I didn't quite see much improvement and that's why I want to know how reliable the widal test is. Please don't mention HIV because, one, I'm not sexually active yet, and two, I took a VCT test for HIV within three months of the first typhoid test which returned negative. And before taking the first typhoid test I'd been noticing the 'typhoid' symptoms for more than six months.

@U1, Widal test was once the Gold standard for the detection of the presence of Salmonella typhi, the microbe causing typhoid wink. Now, it is no longer relied upon because it is not specific for typhoid angry. Widal test looks for "footprints" of typhoid in the blood, and very many microbes have been observed to wear similar "shoes" as the one the typhoid microbe wears . This is why almost everyone who does a widal test comes out with a positive result shocked. Though there are more specific tests for typhoid now, Widal still holds sway over this land embarassed. Another thing to note is that typhoid fever doesn't just cause fatigue and weight loss. It usually starts by hitting you with diarrhea with constipation and then high fever. The fever is so high, you'll be convinced its malaria. cry

On the HIV issue, unprotected sexual intercourse isn't the only means by which the virus spreads. Being cut by unsterilized sharp objects used on other people is a relatively common way in Naija e.g. ear piercing, clippers, scissors, nail cutters, injections at pharmacies or by quack healthcare workers who use a single injection for all their patients etc. I know several surgeons who were infected by the patients they were operating on. shocked

Its important to know that typhoid lasting more than a month may be fatal. It most likely that you don't have typhoid. I'll advice that you go and see a physician for proper consultation as to what the problem is as many things can cause fatigue and weight loss.

@angola_g, when you say stubborn Staphylococcus areus (sic, its aureus cool), you sound like you have been listening to herbalist who attribute every illness to Staph- from headache to impotence, from poor grades in school to stubborn children grin. To a physician, stubborn staphyloccus isn't enough. You need to provide me with more intel. Have a great week grin

There's so much for doctors to gain from this site,
Health / Re: Doctors Only: by Naijamedic(m): 8:18am On Apr 05, 2008
@jkpretty

doctors who are passionate about practicing in Naija are those who witnessed the glory of the practice back in those days. These memories are strong motivation. We the younger ones who never witnessed these, and are more aware of advances in medicine being made in developed countries, as well as the much better standards of living are filled with doubts about our future. Many of us in residency training feel we have completely lost out youths. The self sacrifice is too extreme. Like it is written, it is wiser to take care of the log in your eye before you help your neighbor remove the speck from his or hers.

Sorry for the delay guys, I have been bugged down with so much work lately

I wonder where Balogun and Naijaking are - they are being expected at www.naijamedico.com

@Bignero, I have a strong feeling that you may have hemorrhoids or peri-anal warts, but like I said earlier, a doctor needs to look at it to determine its true nature. Don't be shy about it. If you are, I suggest you see a male doctor. The genital discoloration is rather unusual, but to get to the bottom of it, we would have to discuss your sexual history among other things and I don't think its appropriate to do so here.

@georgecso, wormlike movements don't translate to having worms. It may mean that you haven't been eating healthily or have been consuming significant amounts of alcohol for a long time. It may be "itching" of sorts, which may be caused by a variety of things from drug reactions to infections. Do you eat a balanced diet regularly? Have you been consuming alcohol for long? If yes, lifestyle modification should help. If not, holla. If you have been eating healthily, I suggest you have a skin snip done to be sure you don't have filariasis

@enque, are you sure you don't have razor bumps? It may just be that. Give them time. They will go. When shaving, adequate moisturization of the area to be shaved helps prevent these things from popping up. So does use of a shaving stick with a sharp blade. Just give them time

@Chineduleo, a BP of 190/? is extremely dangerous. As it is, your mum may be on the brink of a stroke, kidney failure and/or heart failure among other things. Have her taken to a hospital immediately so that her BP may be normalized ASAP!!! Once normalized, we can then talk of how to keep it normal for the rest of her life. You also run the risk of a high blood pressure. Have a doctor or a nurse check your BP for you. It is free, don't pay for it.

Have a great weekend guys

Big nero,
You must be very worried! Anal conditions can be quite distressing.

I must say this for everyone in the house that for anal conditions, its best you have a doctor look at it because there are so many conditions that can occur there and a good number of them look alike. Your description of the physical characteristics of whatever swelling or growth in that region may be completely different from what it really is because you simply can't see it clearly as a result of its location. Some are dangerous, others are not, but its still safer to have a doctor look at it (please don't post the picture of it here!) lol

Anyway, how old are you? are you male or female? whats your line of work? I'll assume you are a Nigerian
this swelling, does it hurt? does it bleed? is it soft or hard? do you find it difficult passing feces? has this happened before?

as to your private part, well, at least you see why I need to know if you are male or female. What colour was it before? what color is it now?

Such specifics will aid me advice you, but you must have a doctor look at it.

Have a great week!
