Crime / Two African Men Get Death For Drug Trafficking In Malaysia by napoleonapache: 9:08am On Sep 05, 2018 |
September 5, 2018 @ 1:29pm Nur Aqidah Azizi SEREMBAN: The High Court here sentenced two men to death today after they were found guilty of trafficking 2,083 grams of methamphetamine two years ago. Judicial Commissioner Muhammad Jamil Hussin meted out the punishment after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond doubt. Both the accused, Chikanso Ansalem Okoli, 29, from Nigeria, and Desmond Owusu, 25, from Ghana, were represented by Abdul Aziz Hamzah and Datuk Hanif Hassan respectively. The prosecution led deputy public prosecutor Hazeelia Muhammad presented 16 witnesses while the defense presented two witnesses to testify during the trial. Chikanso, who worked as a restaurant helper in Nilai and Desmond, who studied at a private college in Perak, committed the offence at a parking lot in Nilai Square on March 15, 2016, at 11.05am. According to the facts of the case, both of the accused were arrested by the police from the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) after the duo were found behaving suspiciously. The arrests were made after police received a tip-off on drug trafficking activities in the area. For the offence, they were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which is punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code which carries the mandatory death penalty. The accused did not show any reaction when the sentence was read out by Muhammad Jamil. Earlier, during mitigation, the defense lawyer said both the accused were influenced by a mutual friend and regretted their actions. He also said this was their first-time offence. Hazeelia, however, urged for a deterrent sentence, saying it was a serious offence. “This should serve as a lesson to the public, especially the foreigners,” she said.
