Governor Godwin Obaseki has promised a prize money of $35,000 for the Edo State International Film Festival.

This is to help buffer the creative industry in the state.

He made the promise on Sunday in Lagos State when he delivered a keynote address at the festival’s industry mixer.

The Edo governor promised to continue to support the creative industry. He also declared the state’s interest in competing with Lagos as a creative hub in Africa.

On the stolen artifacts from Benin, Governor Obaseki said they all do not have to be repatriated, but their ownership has to be returned to Nigeria even if they are still displayed abroad.

During the event, Obaseki also met with creative and Nollywood practitioners ahead of the festival later this year.

Sports / Osimhen, Iheanacho Ruled Out Of Nigeria’s Game Against Mozambique by NationalPOINT(f): 1:11am On Oct 16, 2023
Super Eagles duo Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho have been ruled out of the team’s friendly game against Mozambique.

This is according to a Sunday update on the team’s X handle.

Osimhen was substituted in Friday’s 2-2 draw with the Green Falcons of Saudi Arabia. But days after the tie, the team’s handlers said the Napoli forward would not be part of Monday’s Mozambique clash as a “precautionary measure on advice of the medical team”.

For Iheanacho, he was excused to enable him to attend to “pressing personal issues”.

Iheanacho and Osimhen were part of the clash against Saudi Arabia with the former scoring on the night.

Nigeria’s game against Mozambique is billed for the Estadio Municipal de Albufeira, Portugal on Monday.

The game is expected to begin by 4 p.m. (WAT)

Politics / Reject Bill To Regulate Social Media Bill, Group Tells Akpabio, Abbas by NationalPOINT(f): 12:25am On Oct 16, 2023
Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and Speaker, House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, have been urged to “reject the recently reintroduced social media regulation bill.”

In a statement on Sunday, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) said that the passage of the bill “would unduly restrict the rights to freedom of expression and privacy,” and urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to stop its efforts to compel technological firms like Google and YouTube to restrict such “fundamental human rights.”

The group’s deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, believes the bill would “criminalise the legitimate and lawful exercise of human rights.”

Warning that the passage of the bill “would unduly restrict the rights to freedom of expression and privacy,” the group asked President Bola Tinubu’s administration to stop its efforts to compel technological firms like Google and YouTube to restrict such “fundamental human rights.”

The statement read, “The National Broadcasting Commission last week reportedly stated that, “one of Nigeria’s major problems now is social media,” and described social media as “a monster.”

“In the letter dated 14 October 2023, and signed by SERAP deputy director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said, “social media is neither Nigeria’s problem nor a monster. Any regulation of it would have arbitrary and excessive effects, and cause incalculable damage, both in material and human rights terms.

“Any move to regulate social media would be inconsistent and incompatible with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended] and the country’s international human rights obligations.”

“The reintroduction of the social media regulation bill would lead to deterioration of the human rights situation in the country and carry major economic costs for all sectors, as well as exacerbate social and economic inequalities.”

Music/Radio / Celebrities Should Open Up To Us by NationalPOINT(f): 1:44am On Oct 15, 2023
This has become something else which we are to look into. Celebrities should please open up to us, and tell us what exactly is going on in the industry mostly the music industry. If a person in the likes of Wizkid happens to hold an occasion at which few or less fellow artist showed up, shows something fishy is inside the industry. Burna boy, Davido, Olamide and so many of them, should have at least be present to pay their respect to Wizkid late mom.

We all wished to be a celebrity, but I think there is something they are not telling us 🤣.

The story was all about Mohbad, which no artist came to the funeral except the likes of OGB Recent and Cute Abiola, now it's Wizkid late mom.

What is your own view on this?
