Gbawe: NEPA, NEPA, NEPA, NEPA and again NEPA is the reason. |

erico2k2: Well said, mate. Rush hour is rush hour everywhere in the world. However, elsewhere in the world people DO have a choice. I live in Lagos, and what I hate most about Lagos is the LACK of decent public transport. Driving in Lagos is nightmarish, and I don't ALWAYS want to drive! If only there was a choice between a bus, an underground train or a surface train to be made in Lagos, blood pressures would be much lower. I thank God that I don't have to work on the Island, for example, the commute would most probably be the death of me. |

mekuslogan: Not a very sensible thing to say. It was the Federal Government that brought Lagos to the state it is today, true, but what has that got to do with the Yorubas refusing to allow the development of the rest of the country? Speaking as an Igbo person, what have the South Eastern governors done to develop Owerri, Enugu, Aba, or Abakaliki themselves in which they were impeded by the Yorubas? And if the Igbos were united, they would be able to insist on getting some things like the dredging of the Niger and the inland port at Onitsha done, or the upgrading of airports in the South East. The failure to acheive these things rests squarely on the shoulders of we Igbos ourselves, not on anything the Yorubas may have done or not done. If the Igbos want to buy property in Lagos, that's their privilege. In the current state of Nigeria, I myself would not invest in property outside the East until I have got somewhere in the East to go back to in the event of any wahala in this country - the lesson of the civil war has been learnt - but more grease to the elbows of those buying property in Lagos. The Yorubas have done well, they have Lagos. Lets go build a metropolitan centre in the East too, if we want. 3 Likes |

Well, the only thing that can be said for Mr. Nnaji is that electricity definitely improved on his watch. Whether that shall continue after his departure is open for surmise. I live in Lagos, and I actually have to turn off my fridge from time to time to be able to defrost stuff, and I havent run my gen for about a month now, because when they do take light its back in about 2, 3 hours. As a Nigerian in my late 30's, I have never seen this much light in recent times, so, you did something right, Mr. Nnaji. Goodbye. Till we meet again, for I have no doubt that you will turn up again. 4 Likes |

Ayee Idris: Those of you saying that all the hate is a true reflection of how Nigerians truly feels could not be more wrong. Am an edo girl married to a yoruba boy and two of my best oldest friends for whom I can take a bullet for are igbos also happily married to yorubas.I worked with over 40 people from different parts of Nigeria and not a single one cared where u are from, as long as u have a good attitude. I know all these people spewing hate in reality have friends that are either igbo or yoruba, so why come here and insult yourselves. Its sad to read. Well said, mate. It actually wasnt North and South America that fought a civil war (a civil war by definition is a war among the citizens of one nation, and North America and South America are two different continents), it was the (roughly) northern part of the country, against the (roughly) southern part of the country, but thy point is most appreciated. However, the fact remains that tribalism, or racism , or simply just the aversion to or fear of people who are different is well-ingrained in the human psyche and can NEVER be rooted out. I'm Igbo, but was born and brought up in Lagos, and can understand all the stereotypes and have actually met and dealt with several people of both tribes who fit the stereotypes perfectly. My father lost property in Lagos during the civil war, and never got it back. Howver, when he returned to Lagos after the civil war, a Yoruba landlord who he did not know allowed him to live in his house rent-free for a while, saying it was his way of trying to help the Igbos, many of whom were left penniless after the conflict. So there you have it, two sides of the coin. At this time that there is much turmoil in Nigeria, many people are looking back to 1966 and saying, Wow, this was how it all started, like play, like play, the next thing we knew, we were at war. Some of my father's generation in Lagos are anxiously trying to acquire property in the East as a fallback, feeling that things have never been as bad as they are now. A friend I know who lives in the Alaba area told me that one old Baale passed by thier house and said that, Shebi una go soon run again and we go claim back our land from una, abi. They are now investing sharp sharp in building a house in Enugu. It is a sad fact that many of the world's major conflicts have been based fundamentally on that dislike/hatred of the other man. We've been down this road before. Time to apply the brakes, methinks. 1 Like |

Nice story, brotherman, quite comic, but (if you dont mind a bit of constructive criticism), much exaggerated and definitely overlong. You could have cut that story in half and still gotten a good belly laugh from your readers. And please never give excuses for typos and grammatical errors, makes you look a tad unserious. Bear that in mind when writing your stuff, and we'll see you before long up there with Soyinka and Achebe. As we say in Igboland, (and in Igbo Accents too): jisike (more power to your elbow). |

Interesting news. Of course we all know that the UN shall not do anything so silly as to accord any suhc observer status to the 'Biafran' group (as an aside, you might want to check out the list of groups, ranging from the crazy (Rastafarians) to Chechnyan separatists to the frankly hopeless who have filed such observer requests with the UN. Its simply a publicity ploy which has little symbolism, if any. As a person of Igbo extraction myself, I would like to wonder if the Igbos are really readty for self government. Assuming the long-awaited Biafra did become a reality tomorrow (which I hope not), who would be the new rulers and despots and oppressors to take control in Aso Rock, Enugu? Is it not the same horrible people who have destroyed the individual Igbo states, like the governors of Imo and Abia states are currently engaged in doing? The Igbo man has the lowest social consciousness of any African tribe, no cohesiveness, sense of unity, quite frankly none of the desired qualities and attitudes of mind required for nation-building. Biafra would be a disaster, I think. We havent even governed ourselves in Imo State, Anambra Stae or Abia State, or Mbaise local government. How then can we govern ourselves in Biafra? I think Naija, bad and decaying as it is, is the lesser of two evisl. I would rather be oppressed by the Nigerian government than by the Biafran government, because mark my words, people, if there ever is a Biafra, then you will see what the Igbo man is capable of, it will surpass the havoc being wrought in Imo and Abia states at the moment, and we shall all wish for the tender mercies of being Nigerians again. I find some of the reports given on this thread to be somewhat confusing, to say the least. I do believe that Nairaland does not give any guarantees, explicit or implicit, as to the accuracy of ads for sales of used cars, property or anything else that is sold through this forum, so why should potential buyers throw away their common sense and good reason when they come to buy cars advertised on here? I believe that if any one of the buyers here were to walk past a car dealership where tokunbo cars are sold, and decide to buy one, they would come back with a mechanic to inspect the car before making up their minds, which is what the dictates of common sense require (caveat emptor). So why wouldn't anyone bring along a mechanic to inspect the cars they wanted to buy when seenadvertised on the internet? I have sold two of my used cars through this forum, and in both cases, virtually all the people who turned up to take a look at the cars all eventually came with mechanics WHEN they were ready to deal. I certainly had no objection to their bringing mechanics to inspect, because I would do the same when I am going to buy a car from anyone. So, my dear Internet users, hang on to your common sense when making purchases. Also remember that it is difficult to sue or take legal action in such cases because the rule is simply: Let the buyer beware. Inspect before you buy, else you will be stuck with what you buy. And please dont blame Nairaland. |
