Car Talk / Re: Faulty Alternator In 2003 Mazda Tribute by neuronin: 9:22am On Sep 24, 2013 |
From personal experiences as a Mazda Tribute user, most likely your fans have been directed. When you start your car, do the fans start simultaneously with the engine? If yes you need to correct that first. I used 5 alternators, plus a new one, and 4 new batteries in 5 months trying to solve this problem. Then I went to automedics and I was told it was because my fans had been directed by Nigerian techs; i laughed them to scorn at such a simple explanation for such a nagging problem, but then I allowed them to return the fans to their original config and since then I've not had any issue with my charging system. That was like a year ago. 4 Likes |
Autos / Re: Importing Auto Parts From The United States by neuronin: 6:41pm On Jul 29, 2013 |
Okay, the car is Volvo V40, 2001. Tokunbo. Just as part of preemptive maintenance, I had decided to change the timing belt, belt tensioner, fuel filter, air filter and oil filter. I called a couple of sellers on Nairaland but I was concerned about the following: 1. High price 2. Long waiting time 3. Uncertainty of product delivery after payment especially because they wanted money upfront. Well, this is naija ooo! 4. Possible mismatch between what I want and what they supply. Since I'm no novice to online transactions, I decided that if I had the right information I could do this on my own. So I started about four days ago. |
Autos / Importing Auto Parts From The United States by neuronin: 6:31pm On Jul 29, 2013 |
I had asked some auto parts sellers on Nairaland how I could import auto parts for personal use but I could afford neither the cost nor the terms so I decided to try on my own. The purpose of this thread is to document my experience in the hope that it helps some people (this is my first time of importing auto spare parts). In case I am just carrying coal to Newcastle, somebody should let me know but I did search through the site for info of this nature but got none. Hopefully my (success) story would spur others to try; especially those who, like me, prefer OEM parts to the Ladipo used ones. FULL DISCLOSURE: I am not a dealer or auto parts seller, no! However after making my purchases the warehouse asked me to join a customer loyalty programme in which I get a discount on my subsequent purchases if any customer buys from them on the strength of my referral. But please YOU DO NOT HAVE TO buy from the same place I am buying from! The sole aim of this thread is to pass across helpful information. |

drkay: E-fight I guess? Count me out! no,it's not e-fight, you goofed on 2 counts and you should have apologized for your errors. 1, you did not understand or you misunderstood my simple, well-written English. 2, you offended many by your words which suggest some career arrogance. By the way, which college of medicine in Nigeria (or abroad)produced you? |

drkay: Doctors can be entrepreneur, in fact, final year community medicine posting is all abt enterpreneurship. I remember 1 of my end-of-posting questions, "Discuss Health as a Commodity". Doctors are nt restricted to the 4 corners of the hospital, most of my consultants make larger percentage of their income outside medical practice. MBBS is a first degree bt nt like any other course, putting it in d categories of Transport mgt or yoruba is an INSULT. If u have it, I blv u'll hold it jealously. Please read lines 2,3 and 4 of my post AGAIN. If English is not as difficult as your Medicine, you should see that you've got a misread there. 1 Like |

There needs to be a balance to the predominant views on this issue. Studying Physiology, Pharmacology, Anatomy or any other basic medical science course is not a certificate of penury or hopelessness. Many degrees in Nigeria fare no better. Think of graduates of Agric extension, Transport management, Sociology, Philosophy, Yoruba, Russian, etc. In fact, save management sciences like Accounting and Business admin, and Medicine, I am not sure there is any first degree that could 100% qualify as 'hot cake'. When you know that, then a re-orientation is what you need. First degree is just that, a first degree! Get a second,a 3rd, a 4th etc if you wanat something else! You do not have to work with your 1st degree! There are soft skills garnered in basic medical science training that you can put into good use. My medical doctor friend is now a fish farmer, another is a computer programmer, many are lecturers, sos what's the big deal? The point is free yourself from the tyranny and enslavement of your 1st degree! Define a life and pursue it! 8 Likes |

I drive a Mazda Tribute (good SUV) and I have had my own fair share of troubles though different from yours. There is only one place I would recommend to you: The Automedics group. They have about 3 constituent garages around Lagos. I used Dr Ben's garage at Morrison Avenue, Ikeja. I STRONGLY recommend you use this kind of upscale garage Roadside,jack-rack-tom-straw mechanics almost destroyed my Tribute, DO NOT PATRONIZE THEM, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!! |

Arlington: Hello, It takes some time and you may not be able to determine or influence it. If the applicant is a 1st time traveller, it will take some time. If the applicant works for a company where people frequently go to Italy, they will classify the application as high priority. Many factors would influence the time really.Cheers. |
Travel / Re: What Motivates Diasporans To Relocate Back To Nigeria? by neuronin: 6:26pm On Jun 16, 2012 |
1. To reduce living abroad to "washing plates and toilets" is grossly incorrect and mischievous 2. Many who bad-mouth living abroad are not doing so in good faith 3. Many Nigerians in the diaspora are too far removed from realities back home that their judgements are coloured, they can not see beyond the daily negative headlines. How do you expect such to think about relocating? 4. Yes, there are many who do menial jobs but many also do them in Nigeria. Many have good jobs abroad, and many do the same in Nigeria. 5. I have met hundreds of Nigerians abroad whom I honestly feel should return to Nigeria. And in the face of the present global socio-economic realities, I believe more Nigerians in diaspora should objectively consider relocating. 6. However, it would be difficult for people without competitive academic credentials and/experience,or a mountain of cash, to relocate. Many of the people you left at home have not been stagnant either! 7. I am relocating next month. I have been to the major countries of the world where Nigerians live but I am not staying.I even turned down a temporary job offer. With a PhD, I am convinced my future is in Nigeria. 8. But that is me!In the final analysis, it is a matter of choice. Whatever works for you, do it! 1 Like |

MsDarkSkin: @ neuroninYou suggest that particular character traits are our undoing, if that is true then it is our nature, our natural construct as fashioned out by God or random forces of nature, that is responsible for the state of the black man. Right? That has very big implications you know |
Politics / Re: Theories To Explain The Backward State Of Africa by neuronin: 2:37pm On May 08, 2012 |
Beautiful contributions from Beaf, Shymex, Kobojunkie, MsDarkskin and the rest However, it appears all the factors we have highlighted are mere epiphenomena of a yet to be identified cause. For example, most continents experienced slave trade and even profited from from selling their own for whatever material gains. Why has Africa reacted more negatively with these massive traits of backwardness than other races who also had similar experiences? Also, if slave trade, colonization and/or connivance of the ruling classes are the fundamental issues, on what pivot do these factors rest? If we had "developed" significantly prior to the arrival of colonialists, if we had had sufficient or superior cerebral prowess; which would, among other things, have translated into the ability to defend ourselves against invaders, would we ever have been colonized? Studies seem to suggest that life started in Africa, why didn't these early Africans venture out like the Westerners did centuries later? Why didn't it ever cross anybody's mind then to see what was on the other side of the river? If it did, why didn't they have the technology to travel? So what made it so easy for us to surrender our sovereignty a such early dawn of time? Some have advanced "default culture" as a possible reason. To start with, humans are not born with any culture, culture is a product of the interaction between innate cognitive processes and the environment as the individual seeks to make sense of the world. Therefore, culture, greed, selfishness, lack of self esteem, all character traits etc and even religion are all external manifestations of something congenital to a race. So, when we trace all these factors long enough, we must arrive at a point, the end, an origin,an individual, the first individual, and the first black person, who embodied the race in terms of everything innate. It is when I arrive at this end that I find myself at a beginning that i do not understand 3 Likes |
Career / Re: Human Anatomy & Physiology Graduates: Lets Meet Here by neuronin: 8:18pm On Apr 10, 2012 |
My opinion is that all what we call "Basic Medical Science" courses (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology etc etc) should undergo major revisions as per their continued relevance in the Nigeria context. Do we still need these courses? how many graduates of these degrees should we produce? who are the true employers of these people? what skill sets do they need? do we have to change titles, alter curricula and/or outrightly delete some things? I have always been convinced that there is a serious need for The Physiological Society of Nigeria, and her counterparts in the other basic medical sciences to call a national dialogue on the future of those professions. The people who are bearing the brunt of the diminishing importance of these degrees are the younger generations of trainees, the established ones have little to bother about because there are ample teaching opportunities around for them. My prediction is that the next few generations down the road would even suffer more. As an initial step in formally calling for a convocation to review these issues, I intend to initiate very soon a national survey to see where have all (Physiology) graduates ended in the last ten years or so and how are they doing. We would be consulting relevant industrial sectors to assess the employability of these degree holders. My hypothesis is that we do not need these degrees AS THEY ARE RIGHT NOW. I do hope the outcome would form a strong basis to draw the attention of The Physiological Society of nigeria, and schools that mass-produce these people, into a forum to channel a new course for the next generations. If you already have a Bachelor's, my advice is to continue to doctorate level, that gives you substantial 'guarantee'; except of course you have a good job, a very good, promising job! 20 Likes 1 Share |
