Politics / Shiites Have Right To Practice Faith – Falana by News0001: 8:27pm On Sep 10, 2019
Activist-lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) on Tuesday said Shiite members have the right to practice their religion.

He recalled that the Federal government clarified IMN’s proscription to the effect that the fundamental right of the Shiites to freedom of religion has not been abrogated.

“To the extent that the Shiites are observing a religious rite, it is callous and highhanded on the part of the Sunnis in government to authorise the police to massacre them.

“It is unacceptable to kill religious worshippers by officials of the federal and state governments that are currently negotiating and bribing bandits and kidnappers,” Falana said.

Politics / Fayemi’s Wife Escapes Death, As FUOYE Students Allegedly Attack Convoy by News0001: 8:15pm On Sep 10, 2019
Some yet-to-be identified student of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti on Tuesday evening allegedly attacked Ekiti State First Lady, Erelu Bisi Fayemi’s convoy on her return from a tour of some local government.

The students allegedly barricaded the Oye-Ikole-Abuja highway to prevent the convoy of the wife of the governor from passing with a view to vent their anger of poor power supply in the town.

The students were said to have engaged the security operatives detailed with the governor’s wife in a violent clash with some vehicles on the convoy, including that of the security operatives were burnt and two pump rifle seized.

News9naija learnt that Mrs Fayemi was sandwiched by some whiskers in a commando-like manner through a marked white hilux van for safety.

She was whisked away through Ayegbaju Ekiti with civil servants, journalists and policemen on her entourage were severely injured.

The students were said to have gone on rampage few hours after they have protested against incessant power outage.

Students of FUOYE had gathered as early as 6:39 am in front of the gates of the twin campuses of the institution in Oye and Ikole respectively.

It was gathered that the students dispersed after a few hours and normalcy had returned on the campuses and their environs but suddenly they allegedly regrouped.

Reacting, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, Mr. Caleb Ikechukwu, confirmed the attack on the governor’s wife.

Ikechukwu explained that the students protested in the morning and blocked the Ifaki-Ikole-Omuo highway and prevented free flow of vehicles.

“The students did not allow vehicles to move freely and they vandalized the property of Benin Electricity Distribution Company .

“When police went there to dialogue with them, they resisted them. And the wife of the governor who went on local government tour ran into the barricade mounted on the road.

“The students were reported to have been violent destroying cars and smashed the windscreens of vehicles.

“We want to warn that the command won’t tolerate hooliganism under any guise. We want to assure the public that the police are on top of the situation and our people must go about their normal businesses”.

Crime / Guard ‘kills’ Lebanese Boss, Dumps Body In Septic Tank by News0001: 7:49pm On Sep 10, 2019
A Lebanese national identified as Basan Khodari was on Tuesday found dead inside a septic tank in his Lagos residence.

There are suspicions he might have been killed by a private guard he employed to secure his home who has since fled the deceased’s Bombay Crescent, Apapa residence.

It was gathered that Khodari returned from Abuja on Monday evening unannounced and found the unnamed guard and his accomplices stealing his valuables.

He was said to have confronted the guard for bringing in strangers into his home and stealing his Plasma television, other items in his absence which the suspects did not like.

Sources said there was a heated argument from the foreigner’s home on Monday, adding that they were shocked to discover his dead body inside the tank on Tuesday.

It was gathered that the guard had planned with his friends to steal valuable items from the home and escape before the Lebanese returned from his trip but they were caught in the act.

Confirming the incident, police spokesman Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP) said investigation was ongoing, adding that some suspects were already in custody.

“We are trailing the key suspect. Some persons have been arrested and investigation is ongoing. I cannot give you further details so that we do not jeopardise investigation,” he said.

Crime / False Alarm: Whistle Blower Remanded In Prison For N700m Pension, Tax Fraud by News0001: 4:26pm On Sep 10, 2019
An Ikeja High Court, Lagos has remanded a whistleblower, Lord Umoh Archibong Edem, in prison custody for raising false alarm over an alleged N700 million pension and tax evasion fraud.

Edem was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday on a one-count charge bordering on making false statement to a public officer before Justice Hakeem Oshodi.

EFCC prosecutor, S. O. Daji told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on August 7, 2019, in Lagos.

Daji said that the defendant provided false information to a public officer and the EFCC about the involvement of a company, Starsonic/Sacvin Group of Nigeria, where he is an employee, in a pension and tax evasion fraud.

“The defendant claimed that the management and staff of the company were involved in massive pension fraud, tax evasion and other fraudulent activities to the tune of N700 million,” Daji said.

The prosecutor added that the offence of making a false statement to a public officer contravened Sections 96 (a) of the criminal law of Lagos State, 2011.
According to information before the court, “Edem had on August 7, with an intent to cause arrest and prosecution of the management staff of Starsonic/Sacvin Group Nigeria Limited gave information he knew to be false to the EFCC and Mrs Patience Kalu, a public officer, that the company is involved in a massive pension fraud, tax evasion and other fraudulent activities running over N700m”.

Edem pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Vacation Judge, Justice Oshodi, thereafter remanded the defendant in prison custody.

Justice Oshodi ordered the case file remitted back to the registry for re-assignment.

Operatives of Ekiti Police Command have arrested a 24- year-old man, Ebenezer Olorunleke, who allegedly killed his brother with three other gangs and stole his motorbike alongside other items.

The State Police Commissioner, Mr Asuquo Amba, while addressing newsmen during a parade, said the suspect, who hailed from Jege in Kogi State killed his brother with the aid of a knife and long screwdriver on August 29, 2019 and fled.

The commissioner said the suspect and three others invaded his brother’s home at Abe Cocoa area of Okeila and stabbed him to death and stole his red coloured Bajaj motorbike with registration number ADK 100 UJ.

Items recovered from the suspect, whose accomplices are still at large are a long screwdriver, knife and Bajaj motorcycle.

“They hit him in the stomach and pierced his intestine when his wife and children were not at home. He had confessed to have committed the offence”, he said.

Another police source revealed that the attackers allegedly drove a long nail into the deceased’s skull while struggling to rob him.

Recounting on how his brother was killed, Olorunleke said what his friends who allegedly killed his brother wanted to do was to help him collect money from him, describing his brother as a stingy individual.

“I did not follow them inside the room, but upon realising that my brother had been stabbed and was shouting, I rushed in and wanted to rescue him but he bit me and chopped off my finger.
“The guys later came to my house to attack me. They wanted to sell the machine, I resisted it. I was thinking of coming to the police to report when I was arrested with the machine”, he said.

The Commissioner said the command has set up operation PUFF Adder and had rejigged its Special Anti Robbery Squad(SARS) to be able make Ekiti safe for all and sundry.

He said the efforts of state command is to ensure that proliferation of light arms is checkmated in the state.

“Those apprehended are genuine suspects and they will be tried and we are also sure of conviction”, the CP assured.

Amba added that the wide network of communication with sister agencies and local hunters had helped the police in extending its tentacles and fortify its intelligence gathering mechanism.
