Queen of Twon Brass Kingdom and President of the Queens of the Niger Delta Initiative, Her Majesty, Dr Josephine Alfred Diete-Spiff, Esq JP called on the Ijaws in Diaspora on the need for an effective and efficient collaboration to meet the yearning and aspirations of Ijaw women in order for them to be empowered to achieve their fullest abilities and potential in every sphere of their life.

The Royal Queen made the call during her paper presentation on the occasion of the Ijaw Diaspora Convention held recently in New Jersey, United States of America.

Speaking on the theme: “Effective Collaboration with the Ijaw Diaspora: Hope for the Ijaw Women”, Queen Josephine noted that the Ijaw woman is majestic, full of strength, beautiful, hardworking, long-suffering, compassionate and caring for her children and loved ones.

She said that the description which depicted a typical Ijaw woman as with a pan on her head, a baby wrapped on her back and her work implements in her hands, ready to provide for the family under the hot African sun and Niger Delta rain, unperturbed by the harsh experiences of life shows she is tenacious and hardworking.

She said, “Unfortunately, today, the evil of industrialization in the name of oil and gas extraction and the attendant land grab/pollution have put a lot of our women out of the traditional livelihood occupation of fishing and farming which gave them prosperity in the past thus pushing them into poverty and loss of control of the children-a basis for the numerous vices among our youths today.


According to her, Ijaw women are mostly breadwinners and the nurturers of their families, adding that their livelihood was greatly impeded by the challenging environment of the Niger Delta, which though rich in oil and income generating opportunities, same are out of the reach of the Ijaw woman.

The wife of the former Rivers State Military Governor further emphasized that Ijaw women are agents of social change, if given the opportunity, adding that a collaboration with the Ijaw Diaspora will be a welcome development in changing the narrative of Ijaw Women in the livelihood scheme of survival.

“The Ijaw woman's means of survival are also threatened by a growing trend of farm produce theft and flooding. Added to her woes are kidnapping, herder invasion, and early widowhood, leading to loss of socio-economic subsistence. She also suffers from the attendant factors of poverty increased by lack of education, susceptibility to violence, cultism, health challenges, underage motherhood, in addition to some harmful traditional practices. The list is endless.”

Proposing avenues which require effective partnership, Queen Josephine called on the Ijaw Diaspora to collaborate with Ijaw women in homeland in areas of Interventions in Violence and Ill-Treatment Against Ijaw Women, Ijaw Women/Girl Child Education, Ijaw Women Empowerment, Encouraging Ijaw Women to Participate in Politics and take up Leadership Positions.

“It's undeniable that the Ijaw Diaspora has assets for collaboration due to their international exposure, international contacts, financial resources, human and mental resources that override the economic capabilities of their counterparts in the homeland. Therefore, they can offer training, assist in primary healthcare, provide resources and partner with the Ijaw women in their homeland.

“Collaboration with the Ijaw diaspora will be impossible without a formidable platform for operational collaboration and communication. One, therefore, recommends the creation of a most needed platform for efficient synergy between Ijaw diaspora and Ijaw women at home.

“So that the local Ijaw women can be empowered to achieve their fullest abilities and potential in every sphere of their life. For every Ijaw woman to fulfil the requirements of her heart and be free from any form of oppression, she needs to be liberated and confident in herself. Her desired accomplishment in life is a sine qua non for the benefit of the Ijaw ethnic nationality”, she stressed.

Public office holders should know that they are accountable to the people.

All political appointees serving under Prof Soludo led Administration, should becareful not to mess up the system that we are patiently waiting for productive leadership and good governance. Advisedly, the Soludo's administration had started on good note, and the momentum should be sustained.

King Alfred Papapereye Diete- Spiff, a Navy commander, was the first Military Governor of Rivers State. At age 24, he became the first naval officer to be appointed a Governor and served for nine (9) years, from May 27, 1967, to July 1975.

As the pioneer Governor, King Diete-Spiff was saddled with laying the foundation and building the State from scratch. An intelligent, hardworking and visionary patriot, he discharged these responsibilities with distinction.

He put together the most cerebral and progressive cabinet ever in the State's history, to help him achieve his bold and ambitious development plan for the new State. Understanding the importance of manpower development, he awarded foreign and local scholarships to hundreds of Rivers State sons and daughters to further their education. In-office, he pursued an industrialisation schema and established several state-owned companies, including the West African Glass Industry, Pabod Breweries Company Limited, Rivers State Vegetable Oil Company, Pabod Finance and Investment Company Limited, Risonpalm (Siat Limited), Eastern Iron Wrought Industries Limited, Metroplastica and Supabod Stores, the New Layout Market and the Port Harcourt Zoological Park, among others. He also started work on the Liberation Stadium (now General Yakubu Gowon Stadium).

Indeed, King Diete-Spiff was so outstanding that he is still revered by the people of Nigeria and Rivers State for laying the solid developmental foundation which successive administrators and governors have continued to leverage on.

Crowned and recognized as King in 1978, His Royal Majesty King Alfred Papapereye Diete-Spiff, the Amanyanabo of Twon-Brass Kingdom, is the chairman, Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council. He served in the 2005 Confab Committee on Models and Structures of Government; he is the Chairman of Citres, INC (Ijaw National Congress), National Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Association of Auctioneers, Member, National Political Reform Conference, National Think – Tank, South-South People Assembly (SSPA), among others.

King Alfred is the Chancellor Novena University, Ogume, Delta State, Chancellor Bayero University, Kano and most recently, Chancellor, Nigeria Maritime University, Okerenkoko, as well as Trustee of many organisations.

The Federal Government has said it would spend about N34 billion on the ongoing payment of minimum wage consequential adjustments to education sector workers with effect from 2019.

According to a statement by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the beneficiaries include the members of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and their counterparts in the Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, disclosed this while responding to questions from Labour correspondents in Abuja on the prolonged ASUU strike.

According to Ngige, the universities would get N23.5b, the polytechnics N6b and the Colleges of Education N4b, totaling about N34b.

Regarding the ASUU strike, the Minister said the committees set up during the last tripartite-plus meeting of the government and university-based unions were given a fortnight to turn in their report, and they were still working.

He added that the reports of the committees were being expected this weekend.

He said, “Those committees are working. The one on NITDA is testing the three platforms, the government’s Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) of ASUU, and the Universities Peculiar Personnel Payroll System (UPPPS) of the non-teaching staff.

“They started the testing last Thursday. The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) has issued their amendment circulars. The unions also have copies to take care of responsibility and hazard allowances wherever it has not been properly captured.

Ngige assured Nigerians that there may likely be wage adjustments as the government intensifies efforts to streamline wages through the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

“We have done that of the Police, for example. It wasn’t envisaged that we should do it in bits. But you can see that it has been done. You can also see university teachers saying that their own should be done immediately, since we have done police. So, something is being done. It was part of the 2009 negotiation they had with the government then. So, the committee of Prof. Briggs is on it, discussing with the university unions and their employer, the Federal Ministry of Education. They will bring up something for government to see.

“There are other people. The doctors are complaining about brain drain, this and that. Their hazard allowance has to be touched and it was touched by close to 300 percent. From N5,000 paid across board for each person, the least person in the health sector is getting N15,000 while the big ones are getting N45,000. That is a quantum leap.”

The minister appealed to ASUU and other university-based unions once more to suspend their strike so that academic activities could resume in public universities across the country.

The governor of Anambra state Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo on Saturday  announced through his Facebook page that he has visited the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB Nnamdi Kanu to Felicitate with him, and talks about the situation of things back home.  Here is the offical statement as released by the governor 

" I visited Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, yesterday, (Friday, 13th May, 2022) to felicitate with him and also as part of the wider consultations with critical stakeholders in search of lasting peace and security in the South East. 


He was in very high spirits and we had quality and frank discussion in a very convivial atmosphere. Queen Josephine, who also doubles as the President of the Niger Delta Royal Queens Initiative, subsequently handed over the Secretariat to the new leadership after occupying the Royal position for eight ( years, from 2014 to 2022. The Royal Queens in Bayelsa State described her tenor as incredibly impactful and the best in leadership ever seen.

She spoke during the handing over ceremony at the Traditional Rulers Council office complex in Yenagoa on Thursday, April 22, 2022. Queen Diete-Spiff expressed her profound gratitude to their Excellencies Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and Senator Douye Diri for their benevolence, adding that she stayed in office for eight years instead of the usual four years by God's providence.

She also thanked and appreciated the Royal Queens of Bayelsa State for their support throughout her tenure as the Chairperson.

Queen Diete-Spiff said, "I have called this meeting to let you know that I am stepping aside; my tenure ought to have ended four years ago, but by God's providence and the pleasure of their Excellencies, Senator Seriake Dickson and Senator Douye Diri to whom I am grateful, I have stayed this long as Chairperson of the Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Wives Association. I have occupied this position for eight years.

"Thank you, my Queens. I appreciate you all for the period you served with me and the support you gave me. I cannot thank you enough. My special thanks to our Secretary, Her Majesty Tecy Diongoli, for her kindness, for being fantastic at her job, and for superbly holding her position. For without her, the ride would have been more turbulent.

"I thank you all who showed up today and those who gave their apologies because of the short notice. Your collaboration made things easy for the secretariate. The association could not have functioned without you because if meetings and programs are called and no one shows up, there will be no leadership. I urge you to give the same support to the new Chairperson of our organization because the administration cannot be offered in isolation from the people. Highlighting her legacies while in office, the Twon Brass Queen said she created a slogan and an anthem for the organization, instituted a constitution and registered the organization in the state as a social and developmental organization.

According to her, she enlarged the organization from only first-class to include other classifications, giving every Royal home recognition in the organization, instituted a financial system, dress code that befits Royalty and held seminars and conferences that taught the Queen ethical behaviour, trade, self-esteem, self-reliance, public conduct, harnessing peaceful domains, supporting women and children development.

The Royal Queen further noted that she created government recognition for the organization, gave widowed queens a pride of place by retaining their recognition in the organization, supported Queens that needed legal, financial, and social help, free and gave some disadvantaged children from their domains free scholarship to study in her school.

She instituted and formed the Niger Delta Royal Queens Initiative, where she is presently the pioneer President and caters for widows and the physically challenged through her foundation and office.

In a goodwill message, Secretary BSTWA, HRM Queen Okpoitari Diongoli, said the Royal Queens feel so bad that Queen Josephine is stepping aside, adding that they know the great impact she has created in their lives.

"We are grateful for your support, showcasing us as royal queens of Bayelsa State. Your coming on board made the state government recognize the Queens. Ordinary, before now, the queens are never invited to State events and programs, except they attend with their husbands, their King. But today, the reality is different, as the Queens are now rightly recognized.

The Queen of Ikianbiri in the Bomo Kingdom, HRH, Dr Justina Lere Zalakoro, noted that Queen Josephine is a woman that wants every other person to have the knowledge she has and appealed to her to always guide the new Chairperson on areas she may miss.

She said, "We pray that you stay much longer, but it is not within our reach to say so. You carried us along; you exposed us. Those of us that were in the Creeks without anybody knowing us, you brought us out, and today, we are recognized in the state.

"We have made many friends outside the state. Especially me, I have up to five queens from other states as friends. It is your doing. The ideas you brought, the knowledge you gave us, we shall continue with it and learn from you."

In her speech, the Queen of Anyama, Ogbia Community, HRH Queen Pat Agala, said that all the good works Queen Josephine had done for the Royal Queens of Bayelsa State cannot be overemphasized, adding that God is lifting her higher as she is leaving as the Chairperson.

"We appreciate you for making us to feel like somebody in the society, for making our husbands to love us the more. These days, our husbands are no more going out with friends because you brought us out; you made us to know our rights, teaching us how to dress, personal conduct, and how to speak in public.

"You never segregated anybody; you never discriminated against anybody. You didn't look at our status, but you loved us. You believed in us; you worked with us", she added.

Also, the Queen of Gbarain kingdom, HRM Queen Faye Frank Okiakpe, said that Queen Josephine had been a good chairperson who made herself available for the queens to have access to and has treated everyone equally.

"I know with the testimonies of her works, she will be a great leader to the whole Niger Delta, and I know she will do well, she emphasised."

I just read one incoherent article credited to a group that calls itself ‘Osodieme Media Team’ and shuddered at why a high profile candidate in the shape of a former First Lady of Anambra State would surrender her image-making briefs to quacks. If she did and such ludicrous accounts were actually approved for public consumption, then something must be wrong indeed.

I tried so hard to comprehend their point but was lucky (that’s the word) to understand that the group, spearheaded by Uchenna Okafor (Wiper) is not comfortable with the aspirations of Mrs. Maureen Gwacham and is employing all possible tactics to force her to drop her ambition. This is hardly healthy for a political contest under a democracy. But that is by the way, as nothing will make Maureen Gwacham drop her ambition. The citizens of Oyi/Ayamelum are behind her. APGA members in the constituency prefer her to represent them, because the many years Wiper, who claims to be ‘the elephant’ spent in government only succeeded in ‘wiping’ his personal needs; yielding no positive dividends for the people. His political appointment as a Chairman of Oyi LGA, Senior Special Assistant and Commissioner was so inept that it could not even attract any meaningful project, so why does he think the people will stand with him to continue the cycle of personal aggrandizement?

No way, the times have changed. People are wiser and are ready to shock him, with outright refusal. It is this reality that he is finding too hard to live with, forcing him onto this lane of perfidy.
People like him have no business in power, not after the wasted years characterized by incompetence, hypocrisy and highhandedness. He had his time to prove his mettle in governance but blew the chance and also has the temerity to heap the blames on someone’s ambition. He should know that such will not work under the present situation. Thank God, we have a Charles Soludo at the moment who has stressed that service delivery is his focus; this will leave the likes of Wiper in political winter.

He is busy looking for people who are dragging Osodieme to the gutters, without identifying himself, who is the major culprit. Well, he is hiding behind a finger, playing the ostrich without knowing the rest of his body is outside for everyone to see. We know his antics and are fully aware that his loyalty to Osodieme is borne out of selfishness and greed. First of all, Osodieme had relaxed her ambition to be in the senate following the ugly event that happened between her and Bianca Ojukwu during the inauguration at Awka. But with the intention to feather his nest, he was part of the people that persuaded Osodieme to run. His intention in any way is not to see Osodieme win, but to ride on her back financially to secure his own ambition.

This fact is common knowledge in APGA circles and my wish is that Osodieme would realize this and better understand the person she is dealing with.
It is obvious that Uchenna Okafor is solely dependent on government to survive and can do anything to hang on which is why he is busy cooking up lies how Maureen Gwacham did not support APGA. Such lies will not fly, because the people of Oyi/Ayamelum Constituency can see through his lies.

According to Dr. Chuma, Ndi Oyi and Ayamelum generally are satisfied with the rich profile of Maureen and her robust manifesto and would give her their votes overwhelmingly if she clinched the APGA ticket, and seeks election in 2023.

Aggrieved members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC are planning to hold a protest rally in Gusau, the Zamfara state capital on Thursday.

This medium reliably gathered that the rally which is being organised and sponsored by some powerful politicians across in Nigeria, comprising both the PDP and the aggrieved APC members.

According to our sources, those behind the rally include Gen Aliyu Mohammed Gusau rtd, former Senate President Bukola Saraki and Abdulaziz Yari, a former Zamfara state governor among other top politicians in the country.

The sources said the rally which will be organised in the name of launching the distribution of rice for Ramadan, is to be spearheaded by a former Zamfara Senator Kabiru Marafa along with some Yari associates is also taking place st a landed property belonging to the retired general located at Gada biyu in Gusau metropolitan, aiming at destabilising the peace that is now returning to the state.
