Nairaland / General / Read Full Text Of Ijemo Day 110th Anniversary Press Conference 2024 by Newsangle: 8:41am On Jul 23
ADDRESS BY THE CHAIRMAN CENTRAL PLANNING COMMITTEE, CHIEF ANTHONY OYEWOLE OYERO, LEMO IJEMO AT THE PRESS CONFERENCE HELD ON 22/7/2024 AT IJEMO TOWN HALL TO COMMENCE THE ACTIVITIES TO MARK THE 110TH COMMEMORATION OF THE IJEMO MASSACRE AND THE CELEBRATION OF IJEMO HISTORY, CULTURE AND HERITAGE
PROTOCOLS

It is my pleasure to welcome you all to this Press Conference intended to brief the gentlemen of the press and the members of the fourth realm, on the upcoming events planned towards the commemoration of the Ijemo Massacre of 8th August, 1914. This year events is tagged: Ijemo: the Celebration of History, Culture and Heritage.

History is replete with the phenomenon of massacre across the world. The people of Ijemo have had their own share.

Our progenitors suffered a bloodbath, extermination, annihilation, decimation and depopulation in the course of the massacre of August 8, 1914, which sad and unfortunate event stemmed from number of factors, remote and immediate, arising from the lack of trust and the suspicion between the then ruling Egba Oligarchy, the over-zealous Colonial officials, on one hand and the townships’ Chiefs and the people in general; signs of discontent were building up in the minds of the people and these manifested in a number of incidents within the polity.

The people of Ijemo and other Egba Groups were not happy with the way the colonial government was being run through the instrument of dual mandate otherwise called the Indirect Rule, particularly the disruptions in the social order, the impositions of alien obligations, the pressures on the Egba United Government headed by the Alake with his Council to do the bidding of the colonial government.

The immediate cause was the arrest, detention and subsequent death of Chief Sobiye Ponlade, an Ijemo Chieftain, who occupied the position of Ajede of Ijemo (the head of the Hunters), Ponlade was Baale in his Village and a prominent leader around the axis of Ajura (now within Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area).

Ponlade was an activist of some sort; he led the opposition against the draconian measures adopted by the Colonial Government to compel forced labour. This led to his arrest, detention and eventual death in the hands of the British oppressors. The British colonial officials could not stand Chief Ponlade’s opposition and activism against the meddlesomeness of the colonial government in the affairs of the Egba United Government. Ponlade in his own way and being uneducated was fighting for the Egbas, against the colonialists who were eroding the influence and powers of the Egba traditional authorities represented by the Alake. He was a hero of Egba nationalism. Chief Ponlade has to be so perceived for history to be fair to him. Ponlade the Ajede Ijemo enjoyed the populist appeal, he was a charismatic and effective Community Leader. May his soul continue to rest in peace.

The civil unrest broke out, the then rapidly developing Abeokuta Township became embroiled in civil strife with the civil unrest and the masses in open protest and the Ogboni groups were not left out with other townships in alignment with the Ijemo people and their leadership. The Egba United Government had its greatest challenge at hand. The Ijemos believed that Ponlade was not treated fairly, he was not given a fair hearing. The principle of natural justice, nemo judex in causa sua was utterly breached in the handling of the case of Chief Ponlade. The Egba United Government with limited experience at managing social unrest of such magnitude did all to avert the crisis but to no avail, the ill-fated result was the Ijemo Massacre which saw the grueling killing of many Ijemo people and their Leader, Oluwo Arinmokunrin and several households razed down in the inferno caused by arsonists who set dwelling houses on fire and people in their hundreds lost their homes. The Ijemo people retreated to their outpost or satellite villages to live there. Much was the suspicion of the Ijemos for the Egba Leadership for many years. Now it is gratifying that Ijemo has renewed its alliance and cooperation with the Egba Nation.

With the benefit of hindsight, the loss of the Independence of the Egbas, with the British unilateral withdrawal of recognition for the Egba United Government was a political plan which had been formed only awaiting the right opportunity for its execution. The General civil unrest which culminated in the aftermath of the Ijemo Massacre provided the excuse that kick-started the complete Amalgamation of Nigeria. A writer said modern-day Nigeria was formed on the blood of the Ijemo people who were massacred on August 8, 1914.
The loss of Egba Independence is a monumental loss for all of us. No need to trade blames. The Egbas must move towards peace and progress with the united mandate towards the development of all sections with justice assured to all and the history well preserved for better tomorrow. The Ijemo community enjoins all Egba townships and sections, their sons and daughters to recognize the supreme sacrifice of the Ijemo heroes and heroines on the Black Day of the Ijemo Massacre; the magnanimity, generosity and the unique role played by the Ijemo people as indigenous community who played host to the great founders of present day Abeokuta, capital City of Ogun State, Nigeria.
We recognize Itoko which is another Indigenous community in Abeokuta for their brotherhood and loyalty in the time past and even now.

The Ijemos and the Itokos had a significant pact at Orarun at the bottom of the great natural protector of the Egbas, our dear Olumo Rock.
We are grateful for the pacific and developmental role of the Kabiyesi, Alayeluwa Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, CFR, the Alake and paramount Ruler of Egbaland since he ascended the throne of his forefathers. Kabiyesi, has promoted peace and unity between the Ijemo and the rest of the Egba townships for which we openly affirm and so also, is the special cordiality that has been engendered. Ijemo will strife to maintain this rapport for posterity, for Ijemo has outgrown the fears, seclusion, and suspicion of the past.
On this occasion, we must state for the records the significant role being played by Chief Oluyinka Kufile, the Oluwo Ijemo, who is the Aro Egba. He has demonstrated strong commitment to unify and defend his people; serving as the catalyst for projecting the corporate interest and all-round development of the Ijemo people with the framework towards positioning Ijemo community at the fore-front among the comity of the 143 Egba Townships. Your grateful people proffer their gratitude.

The Ijemo has a rich tradition. They are deeply spiritual. The people of Ijemo eschew injustice. They are strong believers in the existence of the Supreme Being. The Ijemos cherish the values of hard-work, good outward and inner character. They are trustworthy, honest, resilient, strong, focused and determined people. Wherever, they found themselves, they strive to excel.

A special mention must be made of the synergy between the Oluwo Ijemo and the Apena, Chief Ajisafe Salami. Apena Ijemo has forged an uncommon bond and understanding with the Oluwo for the good of our people. The strength of any Egba township can be visualized from the stand-point of the kind of relationship existing between the Oluwo and the Apena for it is in their unifying symbolism in conjunction with the other Iwarefa Chiefs and the Sectional leaders, Olori Parakoyi, Jaguna, Balogun, Olori Erelu working systemically and in complementarity can peace, progress and development of the township be achieved. We say in our unity, we are strong.

Nairaland / General / IJEMO DAY: Chief Kufile Warn Youths Against Planned Protest But Seek Dialogue by Newsangle: 8:49pm On Jul 22
Ahead of the Ijemo Day celebration in Abeokuta, the Ijemo Council of Chiefs has warned the Nigerian youths against the planned 10-day nationwide hunger and hardship protest.

The chiefs noted that such decision would not solve the current economic crisis being faced in the country, but rather damage what the government had put together over the years.

Speaking at a news conference in Abeokuta to commemorate the 110th anniversary of Ijemo Day in Abeokuta, Chief Oluyinka Kufile, urged the youths to dialogue with the President Bola Tinubu ‘s government instead of the protest.

Kufile warned that such protest might lead to the destruction of government properties and infrastructure.

He stated that the celebration slated for August 3rd to August 10th is to celebrate the 110th Ijemo Massacre, history and culture.

The high chief while recounting the 1914 Ijemo massacre , warned that engaging in violent protests tends to cause more harm than to offer solutions.

He said, “What happen then in our own time was because someone was arrested and died while in detention.

“Now as at that time whether everybody likes it or not people will die and people will live. But in an environment where there’s an issue the only solution is amicable resolution.

“If we have some buildings and there is no money to renovate them then, some people will now say they want to protest and burn things down. Where are we going to get money to build another one? it is important that we have to dialogue.”

The Council of Chiefs maintained that while the country might be facing challenges with the development of new infrastructure destroying existing ones would only cause more harm than good.

“It is getting difficult for development now, money is no longer the issues that we use to have, creating houses, great infrastructure are very difficult to put together now. We have money in existence but the value is limited.

“So whatever we have or that our forefathers have built either the federal, state or local government level let us strive to make sure that we sustain and maintain them. Damaging what we have been able to put together cannot solve any problem."

OgunToday reports that the line up of the anniversary includes:

Nairaland / General / Rivers State High Court Affirms Wike's Ally, Martin Amaewhule, 26 Others As PDP by Newsangle: 7:32pm On Jun 10
Delivering judgement in Port Harcourt earlier on Monday, Justice Okogbule Gbasam of the Rivers State High Court, held that the claimants failed to prove that Amaewhule and 26 other lawmakers, had defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Justice Gbasam further held that membership of a party is only proven by being listed on the party’s register, or by membership card, adding that television ceremonies and or verbal statements, were not enough to show the same.

Interestingly, the PDP had filed a motion to be joined in the case, and was added as the fourth defendant.

Justice Gbasam further held that the Rivers state government is bound to obey all laws passed by the Assembly, as they are still members of the PDP hence, their names are still in the PDP’s membership register as provided by the party.

He further posited that the state government is bound by the laws made by the Assembly, as they are still members of the PDP, and as such, haven’t lost their seats

Nairaland / General / FG Bans Underaged Girls From Lodging In Hotels by Newsangle: 5:35pm On Jun 09
The Federal Government has instituted a ban prohibiting underage girls from lodging in hotels, cautioning hoteliers nationwide against accommodating them in their establishments, with warnings of potential sanctions for non-compliance.

Minister of Women Affairs, Honourable Uju Ohaneye, read the riot acts on Saturday at the ‘Unlock Training and Grants’ ceremony in Abuja.

She said this was part of the precautionary measures to halt human trafficking, especially Nigerian girls.

She also extended the riot acts to proprietors of schools across the country, warning that they should ensure no student is allowed to be bullied by either teachers or students.

The Minister of Women Affairs remarks were on the heels of a trending video of Nigerian girls who were trafficked to Ghana for prostitution. The teenage girls were aged between 15-16 years.

They were reportedly beaten, molested, and forced into prostitution without pay.

While explaining their plights, the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the girls were rescued after a tip-off by NIDO, the umbrella body of Nigerians living in Ghana.

Aside from a ban on lodging of underaged girls, Honourable Ohaneye also said her Ministry was determined to stop premature deaths of Nigerians as hospitals would no longer be allowed to reject emergency patients.

She said; ”Women have been suffering in this country. Today, we have talked about allowing the poor to breathe in this country.

“Meanwhile I am sure you saw the video circulating about our girls taken to Ghana. Did you see it? Very good. Action will start on Monday. You will hear about our action first thing on Monday morning. That is the first I am going to approach and see what we can do about it.

“Nigeria must be better. From 20th (June), we have directed hotels to put a sign outside from the Ministry of Women. No lodging of underage girls. (Otherwise) what happened in Niger State will be an understatement to what will happen in the FCT and I mean it. No more lodging of underage girls and no more bullying in schools.

“And our hospitals will also put a sign of ‘No more rejection of emergency patients.’ These are some of the major issues we have in this country.”

Nairaland / General / APGA Idemmili South Stakeholders Reject Amaka Obi's Return As TC Chairman by Newsangle: 9:19am On May 19
-- Ojoto Protest: Opposition to Awka-Etiti Agenda After 8-Year Reign

-- Youths Threaten to Shutdown Local Government Headquarters

Political turmoil erupts in Idemmili South Local Government Area as stakeholders vehemently oppose the reappointment of Hon. Amaka Obi as TC Chairman, following eight years of Awka Etiti's dominance in local government leadership.

Stakeholders and community groups argue that Idemmili South comprises Akwu-Ukwu, Alor, Awka-Etiti, Ojoto, Nnokwa, Oba, and Nnobi, yet "Awka Etiti" alone has monopolized the chairman position for an uninterrupted eight-year period, contravening democratic principles and zoning arrangements.

Hon. Don Unachukwu, from Awka-Etiti, served as transition Chairman of Idemmili South from 2016 to 2022, before Hon. Amaka Obi, hailing from the same Awka-Etiti, assumed office in 2022. The reshuffle in local government leadership, by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo's administration, is expected to uphold equity and fairness in Idemmili South and accommodate other communities in the local government area. However, Hon. Amaka Obi's apparent resistance to this directive and popular wish of both stakeholders and the people is viewed as detrimental to the APGA party's interests.

Following a widespread protests and a vote of no confidence, youths have threatened to disrupt operations at the local government headquarters if the party, in collaboration with a select few, persists with the Awka-Etiti agenda.

Stakeholders advocate for power-sharing among other communities to ensure equity and fairness, while reaffirming their unwavering support for Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo and the APGA party.

Hon. Amaka Obi's tenure has been marked by a lack of alignment with the governor's vision and manifesto, failing to attract new party members and perpetuating the Awka-Etiti agenda, which is seen as regressive for Idemmili South, she must take a bow following her outright rejection by the people. Vox populi!

Nairaland / General / It Should Be Ijemo Titun GRA And Not New Ibara GRA As Ijemo Traditional Council by Newsangle: 9:15pm On May 08
It should be Ijemo Titun GRA and not New Ibara GRA as Ijemo Traditional Council Berates Govt Over Name Change

The Ijemo Township of Egbaland in Ogun State has frowned at the distortion of the history of the community by the Ogun State government with the redesign of the Ibara GRA to New Ibara GRA, saying that the old name of the GRA should be Ijemo Titun GRA

The development according to Ijemo Traditional Council’ has caused disquiet in the town, with the leadership of the Ijemo Traditional Council calling for the correction of the anomaly for peace to reign.

It could be recalled that the government of Western Region had forcefully allocated some lands belonging to Ijemo township for an housing estate when Ogun State was created in 1976.

The Estate was named Ibara Housing Estate, which was obtained from the Ijemo, as the land originally incontrovertibly belongs to the Ijemos.

The Ijemo Traditional Council’ said with the redesign of the Estate now meant for sale, the name of the GRA should be reverted to its old original name as Ijemo Titun GRA and not New Ibara GRA.

“Our attention has been drawn to the numerous statements by the representatives of Ogun State government at different fora in which Ijemo Land is been erroneously called Ibara GRA, the action is capable of creating crisis in Egbaland.

We need not remind the government that the act can result to loss of Cultural identity, we know that history is deeply intertwined with cultural identity, serving as
repository of shared experiences, values, and
traditions. Erasing or distorting historical events can undermine cultural identity by
erasing important aspects of a community’s past and disconnecting people from their cultural heritage.

The action can also result to normalization of Injustice, by whitewashing or minimizing the history of past injustices,
opposing groups normalize oppression and inequality.

This sends a message that certain voices and experiences are less valid or worthy
of acknowledgment, perpetuating marginalization and silencing marginalized
Communities.

If the trend is not reversed, it can also lead to manipulation of Memory.

“Manipulating or erasing history distorts collective memory and shapes public consciousness. It creates a false narrative that reinforces existing power structures and serves the interests of those in
positions of authority, often at the expense of marginalized groups.

” We therefore called on government to revert to the original name of the land as New Ijemo Titun GRA.

The monarchs of the Southwest region agreed to several measures to address insecurity, including organising regional security summits led by Southwest governors and empowering and strengthening the Amotekun Corps with enhanced training, financing, and modern weapons to tackle local security challenges.

They emphasised the importance of traditional values and the roles of Yoruba traditional rulers in combating banditry and kidnapping.

The communique also urged the incorporation of traditional rulers into the national security framework and called for the reinforcement of the judicial process to ensure appropriate punishment for offenders.

The summit concluded with a call for strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and emphasised the need for regular Yoruba security summits to address evolving security dynamics.
The communique partly reads, “Yoruba people should take full control of their forests, homelands and farmlands.

“The Yoruba, especially traditional rulers, should make recourse to their natural resources, including natural powers, to combat banditry and kidnapping; that Yoruba Obas should not jettison traditional values.

“The entire Obas in Yorubaland should work in unison to ward off the evils of banditry and kidnappings, as each of the states can only succeed in chasing the marauders to another state.

“Any Oba who is disinterested in Yoruba culture and custom should abdicate his throne for anyone who is deeply versed and interested in Yoruba traditions.”

Nairaland / General / The Fall Of Notorious 2BABA Lost Consciousness After Fierce Gun Battle Operation by Newsangle: 6:41am On Feb 21
The Rivers State Police Command says the fierce gun battle of February 17, 2024, launched on 2BABA's new camp, has resulted to the death of the notorious criminal after he lost consciousness and failed attempt to resuscitate him.

In a press release signed by the Command Public Relation Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the attack launched on the leader of Iceland secret cult.

The statement reads: in response to the heinous murder of SP Bako Angbashim, the courageous Divisional Police Officer of Ahoada Division, on September 8, 2023, in Odiemude Community, Ahoada-West LGA of Rivers State, the law enforcement agencies, including the Police, Military, and relevant stakeholders, have been unwavering in their commitment to apprehending the culprits and ensuring justice is served.

Viral videos revealing the brutal murder of SP Bako and the brazen display of weapons identified 2BABA and his gang, affiliated with the Iceland Secret Cult. A manhunt ensued, with the Rivers State Government and Nigeria Police offering a 100 million naira bounty for any credible information leading to 2BABA's arrest.

Upon assuming office as the Commissioner of Police for Rivers State on November 15, 2023, CP Olatunji Disu conducted an operational tour to Ahoada local government, where the late DPO was murdered. The Commissioner urged officers to intensify efforts in apprehending those responsible for the gruesome killing. He also paid respects to the five innocent individuals—Charles Osu, Ogbobula Eja, Idaowukwa Felix, Paul Victor, and Achinivu Saturday Edi—who were tragically killed by 2BABA and his gang on suspicion of collaboration with the police. May their souls rest in peace.

The operation adheres to the philosophy of policing by consent, where police authority relies on public consensus rather than force.

The Command appreciates the support from stakeholders, enhancing intelligence-led operations and ensuring no injuries or casualties among law enforcement agencies in the pursuit of justice.

During the operation, more than 70 suspects tied to SP Bako's murder were arrested and prosecuted. However, 2BABA and his gang managed to escape arrest by withdrawing into the forest, exploiting the difficult terrain and strategically placing informants to monitor security forces' movements.

Undeterred, the police formed specialized teams, coordinating with the Army, Navy, Air Force, DSS, and NSCDC in joint security meetings. A resolution was reached, declaring that an attack on one agency is an affront to all, reinforcing their united pursuit of justice against the perpetrators.

Timeline of the Special Operation Targeting 2BABA:

On November 28, 2023, at 1600hrs, Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, formed a special joint operation involving Tactical Units and the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) to apprehend the wanted suspect, David Gift Okpara (alias 2BABA), and his associates. The operation aimed to capture those responsible for the murder of SP Bako Angbashim and recover their weapons and ammunition.

On November 29, 2023, a female associate of 2BABA was arrested , offering valuable insights into the fugitive's lifestyle.

On December 3, 2023, information revealed that 2BABA frequently visited a nearby community via canoe. Despite a two-week surveillance for an ambush using human intelligence (HUMINT), he abruptly stopped visiting, seemingly aware of the proposed operation to be launched.

On December 6, 2023, 2BABA executioner, Faithful Babinghton Joseph, seen wielding an AK47 in a viral gang video, was arrested at his Etche LGA hideout. He died from a gunshot wound sustained during a failed escape attempt.

December 13, 2023: Another female associate of 2BABA was apprehended.
December 15, 2023 (0100hrs): An attack was launched against 2BABA, but he evaded capture due to information provided by his network of informants in various communities. His camp was subsequently destroyed, prompting him to relocate.

December 23, 2023: Operatives arrested a nurse and an informant who provided information to 2BABA leading to the killing of five individuals in his community. The nurse also facilitated logistical support for 2BABA's gang, including food, illicit drugs, water, and gathering information on police activities. Both suspects are currently facing legal proceedings.

December 31, 2023: A multi-agency attack was launched on 2BABA's camp, resulting in his narrow escape and subsequent relocation.
From January 19, 2024: Operatives successfully deployed advanced technology, revolutionizing their approach to the operation and gathering crucial intelligence.

On February 1, 2024, it became clear through continuous surveillance that 2BABA strategically selected a campsite with difficult terrain to discourage land-based attacks, necessitating the use of canoes to reach the location.

On February 10, 2024, the command shared essential information with the Air Force. Around 19:30hrs on the scheduled day, the Air Force executed an aerial assault, causing significant casualties and injuries to 2BABA and his gang.

On February 17, 2024, at around 12:00hrs, 2BABA and his gang attacked Okogbe town and Odiokwu community, destroying pipelines. At 04:00hrs, operatives raided 2BABA's new camp. Despite a fierce gun battle, 2BABA and his gang members escaped.

However, at around 14:00hrs, intelligence confirmed 2BABA's death after he lost consciousness and resuscitation attempts failed.

Efforts are in progress to retrieve the body of the infamous killer, while investigations into the Iceland cult's activities in the region continue.

The Rivers State Police Command remains resolute in its duty to protect the lives and property of the citizens, and it will continue to employ all necessary resources and strategies to ensure a safe and secure environment for all.

These are list of items recovered from the camp:-

Nairaland / General / NAFDAC Bans Sachet Alcoholic Drinks In Nigeria by Newsangle: 7:34am On Feb 06
To promote healthy living among Nigerians, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has commenced the enforcement of the ban on the importation, manufacture, distribution, sale, and use of alcoholic beverages in sachets, PET, and glass bottles of 200ml and below.

,,,,,,The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, stated this on Monday at a press conference in Abuja.

“As of January 31, 2024, there is no alcoholic beverage in these categories that are registered by NAFDAC. I also want to inform you that the agency has started enforcement actions to enforce the implementation of this policy. The window period given to manufacturers by NAFDAC to sell off all alcoholic drinks in this category elapsed on January 31, 2024.

“To this end on the first day, after the elapse of the window period, the agency commenced nationwide enforcement actions on February 1, 2024 to enforce the implementation of the new policy,” she said.

,,,,,She added that during enforcement actions, it was discovered that some manufacturers of the banned products were still producing the products, and still had stacks of both finished products and packaging materials of the products in their possession.

“This situation is of course not acceptable, and the agency views this as flagrant disobedience to the laws of Nigeria. NAFDAC views this matter seriously and will engage all statutory means, which may include prosecution, to deal with the matter.

,,,,,,“I want to use this medium to ask all holders of alcohol in sachets, PET and glass bottles, empty sachets, PET bottles, empty glass bottles, and other packaging materials of these banned products to immediately report to the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate of NAFDAC for hand-over of same to NAFDAC for destruction, to prevent sterner measures including prosecution,” she declared.

In January 2022, NAFDAC stopped the registration of alcoholic beverages in sachet and small volume PET and glass bottles below 200ml.

This decision was based on the recommendation of a high-powered committee of the Federal Ministry of Health and NAFDAC, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, and the Industry represented by the Association of Food, Beverages and Tobacco Employers, Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria, in December 2018.

As a result of the decision reached at the end of the committee meeting, producers of alcohol in sachets and small volume agreed to reduce the production by five per cent with effect from January 31, 2022, while ensuring the product is completely phased out in the country by January 31, 2024.

,,,,,“NAFDAC committed to ensuring that the validity of renewal of already registered alcoholic products in the affected category does not exceed the year 2024.

“NAFDAC is resolutely committed to the strict implementation of the regulations and regulatory measures towards safeguarding the health of Nigerians, particularly the vulnerable youth, against the dangers of reckless consumption of alcohol,” Adeyeye assured.

The don warned that the people mostly at risk of the negative effects of consumption of the banned pack sizes of alcoholic beverages are the under-aged, commercial vehicle drivers and riders.

,,,, ,,“The World Health Organisation has established that children who drink alcohol are more likely to use drugs, get bad grades, suffer injury or death, engage in risky sexual activity, make bad decisions, and have health problems.

“The WHO also stated that harmful consumption of alcohol is linked to more than 200 health conditions including infectious diseases – Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS; and non-communicable conditions- liver cirrhosis and different types of cancer. It is also associated with social problems, such as alcohol addiction and gender-based violence.

“To curb the menace of abuse of alcohol, WHO recommended some actions and strategies to policymakers that…..have shown to be effective and cost-effective, which includes regulating the marketing of alcoholic beverages, and regulating and restricting the availability of alcohol,” she explained.

Upon this directive, some Nigerians were of the opinion that the Federal government should leave minor issue of alcohol and address issues of economy and insecurity.

Nairaland / General / Ogun Yet To Take Possession Of Abeokuta-ota-lagos Expressway - Abiodun's Aide by Newsangle: 7:17am On Feb 06
Work is yet to begin on the reconstruction of the Abeokuta-Ota-Lagos Expressway because the Ogun State Government is still waiting for final approval of the concessioning of the road from the Federal Government.

It will be recalled that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced in October last year, during a briefing after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Aso Villa, that the Federal Government had finally concessioned the all important road to the Ogun State Government to reconstruct after several efforts made to that effect by the Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration.

The reconstruction was to be carried out under the Highway Development and Management Initiative (HDMI), with the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) and the Federal Ministry of Finance to be involved in the process.

Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Media, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, speaking on the latest development on Monday, said that although there is a presidential approval for the concessioning, there is no EXTRACT from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approving the concessioning.

According to Akinmade, the procedure for the concessioning is not complete without FEC's EXTRACT paper.

He noted that after deliberation and approval, the FEC will issue an extract from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), transferring the road to the Ogun State Government.

The special adviser said that the Ogun State Government is waiting anxiously for the FEC's nod to proceed with the project.

He added that the FEC Extract is needed to raise funds for the project and also discuss with investors.

Commissioner for Works, Engr. Ade Akinsanya had earlier said the state administration had been providing palliatives to make the roughly 70km road manageable for motorists.

"Ogun State has been rehabilitating the road since 2019. We keep doing palliative works because the governor is always concerned about the suffering being experienced by the people. He remains concerned about the deplorable state of the road until he got what he wanted from the federal government.

"With the transfer done now, we are happy and ready to immediately take over the project and turn around the fortunes of the road. It's what we've been looking for, praying for since we came on board. We will take over immediately, subject to paperwork between us and the federal ministry," he had said.

Nairaland / General / Baale Mamu, chief Fadipe Congratulates Gov Abiodun On Supreme Court Verdict by Newsangle: 4:10pm On Jan 19
The Baale of Mamu, Ijemo land situate at Oke Mosan in Abeokuta,Chief Fredrick Ayotokunbo Fadipe, FIIP on Friday has described the judgement of the Supreme Court panel that affirmed Governor Dapo Abiodun’s victory as a “call for unity and progress” that should be seen as a call for all hands to be on deck towards the prosperity and infrastructural development of the state and its citizenry.

According to him, “the judgement had finally settled the legal battle over the 2023 governorship election, saying lovers of democracy must commend the efforts of the judiciary in deepening the country’s democracy through its judgments”.

“While congratulating the Governor on his victory at Supreme Court Chief Fadipe appeals to his Excellency to bring everyone onboard irrespective of their political beliefs and parties as one united family as we all know that in any race there must surely be a winner and the losers but the spirit of sportsmanship is of immense importance for peace, growth and success to be witnessed in the state.

I am also extending my congratulatory messages to all APC and PDP Families in politics and wished the governor a successful governance of Ogun State.” He added

The appeal jointly brought before the apex court by the PDP and Oladipupo was thrown out on the main ground of being unmeritorious.

Justice Tijani Abubakar dismissed the petition in the lead judgment he delivered.

Justice Abubakar rejected the prayer by Adebutu and PDP for an order to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct fresh elections in the 99 polling units where elections were allegedly cancelled.

The court disagreed with the allegations of election cancellation in the 99 polling units and the claim that INEC never denied the issue.

On the contrary, the Supreme Court held the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its governorship candidate, Dapo Abiodun, were lawfully declared winners of the March 18 poll by the electoral body.

Justice Abubakar agreed that the documents brought by the appellants that elections were cancelled in 99 polling units were worthless papers and lacking in evidential value for having no heading, no date and no signature and name of any official.

The court affirmed the findings and conclusions of the Ogun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal which had earlier dismissed the petition for want of merit.

Nairaland / General / Baales Alleged Non-receipt Of N16mn Monthly Stipends Amid Abiodun's Approval by Newsangle: 3:19pm On Dec 09, 2023
Baales in Ogun State have voiced their grievances, over the receipt of #16m being released by His Excellency for their monthly stipends despite regular releases by Governor Abiodun.

Frustration has been mounting among these leaders as they claim that while the governor has been making timely payments, most of them are not receiving their rightful entitlements.

There are four traditional councils in the state- Egba Tradition Council, Yewa Tradition Council, Ijebu Tradition Council and Remo Traditional Council.

Narrating their ordeal, while speaking to journalists in Abeokuta, the state capital yesterday, President of The Ogun State Councils of Baales, Tunji Falola, debunked rumor that Governor Dapo Abiodun has not been paying the 1,600 registered Baales in the state as promised.

He recalled that the governor began the release of N16 million monthly stipend for all the registered Baales in the four traditional areas of the State in February 2023 after their council had appealed for it.

Making further revelation, the President disclosed that the Remo Traditional Council started paying its Baales #15000 per baale per quarter upon receiving the first grant from the Ogun State government. Yewa and Ijebu paid a few selected baales for two months. The story is not different in Egba.

Falola lamented that the baales later discovered that the state government had been releasing their monthly stipends regularly up till the month of October 2023.
His words “in February this year, the Ministry of Local
Government and Chieftaincy Affairs confirmed the release of N16 million for our stipends. He believed this was a special grant by the state government outside the statutory monthly allocation to the traditional sector.
He said several appeals had been made in terms of correspondence to the governor about the plight of baales.

My name is Baale Tunji Falola, the Baale of Oke-Yidi Lantoro Abeokuta. I'm the Chairman of all Baales in Abeokuta South Local Goernment area and the President of all Baales in Ogun state.Since the creation of the state in 1976, Governor Abiodun happens to be the most friendly Governor to Baales in Ogun state. He was the first sitting governor to attend our annual Oko-Ilu Day celebration and sponsored it. He was the first Governor to consider Baales for regular monthly stipends and promised us a secretariat accommodation. Sincerely, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, is the apple of Baales' eyes.

Then came December 15 last year, we had our oko’ilu day. It is a congress of all Baales in Ogun state. In my opening address at that occasion, we requested four things from the state government.

One, we asked the governor to sponsor that occasion which he did instantly. We pleaded for vehicles, monthly stipends and a secretariat accommodation to enhance the administrative continuity of the association of Baales.

“””We jubilated over the Governor's responses at the occasion.
The traditional rulers are fathers to Baales. They appoint baales and give us the impetus to exist. Rather than saddle them with the responsibility of collating a statistical data for baales, we commenced the registration of baales in 2020 using only one criterion : presentation of a certificate of appointment issued by a prescribed authourity, an Oba. This has resulted in several "unknown" baales rushing to their Obas to legitimise their appointments. As at today, there are 784 registered Baales, in Egba, 315 in Ijebu, 468 in Yewa, and 149 in Remo.
We appeal to our traditional rulers and the State government to save our souls.

Crime / How Monarch And Two Others Bag Life Imprisonment For Kidnapping by Newsangle: 11:11pm On Dec 01, 2023
The Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin, the state capital, has sentenced a traditional ruler and two others to life imprisonment for conspiracy and kidnapping.

Those convicted are the Sarkin Fulani of Kwara, Usman Adamu; his brother; and one Gidaddo Idris.

They were tried and convicted of kidnapping one Abubakar Ahmad in 2022.

The convicts were said to have collected a ransom of N1 million before releasing their victim, who spent 20 days in captivity.

The Kwara State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Idowu Ayoola, brought the monarch and two others before the court for alleged conspiracy to kidnap.

Delivering judgement on Thursday, the presiding judge, Justice Adenike Akinpelu, held that evidence adduced by the prosecution proved that all three accused persons connived to commit the crime.

The judge said the argument about whether or not they were physically present at the scene of the crime was immaterial.

Justice Akinpelu declared that the convicts “supposedly arrested their victim claiming that he was a kidnap suspect to extort money from him”.

She added: “I am not persuaded by the submissions of counsel to the defendants to dismiss the two-count charge against them based on the fact that they were not at the scene of the incident.

“It is saddening and disturbing that community leaders charged with the welfare of their subjects could because of the love of money, breach the security of the same subjects.

“They are hereby found guilty as charged and are so convicted.”

After listening to the convicts’ allocutus, the judge said: “By Section 15 of the state Anti Kidnapping Law, the court cannot exercise any discretion of leniency.

“So, you are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment. The sentence is to run concurrently.”

Justice Akinpelu also ordered the convicts to pay N600,000 to the victim of the abduction as damages.
