Politics / Rush By Ethnic Groups To Join UNPO Indicates Nigeria’s Federalism Isn’t Working by Newsmen101: 2:11pm On May 08, 2020 |
The rate at which ethnic nationalities in Nigeria are joining the Unrepresented Nations and People’s Organisation, UNPO, is a confirmation that the nation’s federal structure is defective and not working to meet the expectations of the federating units, a foremost journalist cum columnist, Chief Tola Adeniyi, has said. Adeniyi, who spoke in a chat with our correspondent, also described the move as a revalidation of the rejection of the partitioning of Africa and the forced amalgamation of different peoples and cultures in the country into a sort of weird marriage of inconvenience. Adeniyi was reacting to the admission of the Prof. Banji Akintoye-led Yoruba World Congress, YWC, and the Ralph Uwazuruike-led Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB as the 45th and 45th members of the UNPO respectively, also considering they are both Nigeria’s ethnics group. The UNPO is an international membership-based organization established to empower the voices of unrepresented and marginalized peoples worldwide and to protect their fundamental human rights. It was formed on 11 February 1991 in The Hague, Netherlands. Its members consist of indigenous peoples, minorities, unrecognized peoples or peoples of occupied territories. Politics / Covid-19: Nigeria: NSE Unveils N100 Million Support For Fight Against COVID-19 by Newsmen101: 1:56pm On May 08, 2020 |
The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) has committed N100 million to support the fight against the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Nigeria. The NSE said in a statement that N60 million would be donated to the Capital Market Support Committee for COVID-19 (CMSCC), while the balance of N40 million would be devoted to the "Masks For All Nigerians" campaign. The CMSCC is a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) led committee, comprised of the capital market community and set up to galvanize the capital market ecosystem to play an active role in curbing the spread of COVID-19 in Nigeria. In addition to its efforts as part of CMSCC, the "Masks For All Nigerians" campaign will see the NSE donate over 100,000 reusable face masks to states most affected by COVID-19. In addition, the Exchange will run an enlightenment program on the safe use of masks on traditional and social media. The initiative, according to the Exchange, comes on the back of a growing call for the use of masks as an effective measure in slowing the spread of COVID-19. Speaking on the initiative, Mr. Oscar N. Onyema, Chief Executive Officer, NSE, said, "At the Exchange, we recognize the health and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Nigerians and the need to adopt more proactive steps in stemming the tide. In line with our tradition of supporting the communities where we operate, we have launched the Masks For All Nigerians campaign to ensure that protective masks get into the hands of citizens in the more vulnerable places. On his part, the President of the National Council, NSE, Otunba Abimbola Ogunbanjo, said, "We are facing an unprecedented existential threat that requires us to adopt a more collaborative approach in fighting this pandemic especially where social interaction is inevitable. As we work to encourage the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) through adequate production and distribution of reusable face masks, we call on the capital market ecosystem to support this initiative by wearing a mask when in public settings and donating masks especially to those at the bottom of the pyramid so as to protect lives leading to the reactivation of our economy." Politics / EXCLUSIVE: Lagos Airport Hotel, Owned By S’west Govts, Send 250 Staff On 3-month by Newsmen101: 12:43pm On May 08, 2020 |
Staff of Lagos Airport Hotel, about 250 of them, were sent home in March as the country began its lockdown to check the spread of COVID-19. The Lagos Airport Hotel is owned by the six South West states of Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Osun through the Odua Investment Limited platform. A text message sent to staff dated April 21 obtained by Ripples Nigeria, claimed it was a management decision. Our findings however, showed it may have been the unilateral decision of the Managing Director, Mr Kayode Bakare, executed through the Human Resources Manager, Mrs Yemi Madu. The workers were all home waiting for salary alerts when they received the devastating text message prolonging their anguish. On April 21, 2020, the text message signed by Mrs. Madu, asked the 150 permanent staff and 100 casual staff to proceed on a compulsory three-month leave effective from May 1. The affected workers had not been paid for March or April. And there was no communication regarding their pay even as the lockdown bit harder. There was also no prior notification of staff or discussion with staff regarding the decision. Ripples Nigeria gathered that the staff were initially expectant of their salaries when asked to proceed on leave in March in compliance with the government’s lockdown directives. But it appeared Mr. Bakare may have seized the opportunity to tactically deprive the staff of their pay without even considering the grave economic impact on them and their families at a time when millions in the country and the world were reeling from the pains of COVID-19. The said text message read: “NOTICE TO GO ON THREE MONTHS STAY BACK AT HOME WITHOUT PAY read: “We regret to inform you of the decision of the management for you to continue your stay at home after the leave for three months without pay till the company contacts you. “This is due to the company’s present financial crisis and its future uncertainty in this prevailing COVID-19 pandemic. This decision was painful and we are sorry it has come to this. But we continue to hope for the best and wish you well.” Only a few days ago, the federal government vowed to protect workers during the pandemic. In a move that had the prints of the federal government written all over it, the CBN halted the sack of workers within the banking sector. Efforts to speak with the company’s Managing Director, Mr. Kayode Bakare did not yield much.
