Politics / INEC Manipulating Pvcs To Favour Buhari, Says Balarabe Musa by Newsupdates: 7:22am On Feb 08, 2015
A political interest organization, Credible Alternative
Alliance (CAA) led by former Kaduna state Governor, Alhaji Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa has alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is tilting the distribution of Permanent Voters Card (PVC) to favour areas believed to be strongholds of All Progressives Congress’ candidate, General Muhammed Buhari.

The group presented a statistical analysis of the
distribution of PVCs which showed the number of
registered voters yet to collect their PVCs in various
zones.

According to CAA, South-East has (3,287, 530) , South West (7,411,205), South-South (3,844,370) , North-East (2,429,763), North West (4,835,556), North Central (3,907,849) and FCT(421,559).

On the distribution of PVCs, CAA said it has observed "a criminal gross disparity of voter spread designed to tilt the election to a pre-determined outcome.

The group insists that all the 68.8 million registered
voters must be given unfettered access to freely
collect their PVCs and cast their vote as provided for
in the constitution, adding that it would be forced to
take INEC to court if that condition was not met.

"Let us call a spade, a spade. There are two main
contenders for the Presidency in this election. The
analyzed data above depicts a worrying trend. Voters in the zones that tend to support President Goodluck Jonathan are massively disenfranchised by the application of the so-called PVCs debacle, 40% to 50% of voters in the these regions who are lawfully and duly registered to vote will be denied their right to vote by INEC.

"That is nearly half of the support base of the
President, simply nullified by administrative (failure) prior to the election. By comparison, the zones that tend to support Buhari are handed a massive voter advantage, nearly 80% of his support base will be allowed to cast their votes by INEC.
In an election, which many say will be won or lost by a slim margin, to now disenfranchise 26million
voters through a questionable and unlawful rule by
INEC is not acceptable by any measure.

" CAA condemns in its entirety. This attempt by INEC to undermine our nescient democracy through this criminal enterprise to determine the outcome of this electioneer before the ballot is cast.
While speaking on the controversy raging over the
coming election, Balarabe Musa said there is no way INEC can be able to distribute the outstanding PVCs within the remaining two weeks.

"INEC cannot meet up with the issuance voters card
to all registered voters, even the PVCs is not being
realistic because of the past failures in the past. For
example, INEC is talking about distributing
permanent voters cards. Let us assume that sufficient PVCs have been produced the commission, how is the PVC is still being distributed.

" We have credible information that in some places in the rural areas, INEC staff take the PVCs for
distribution and because of the disappointments of
the past refuse to come out for collection of PVC. The commission staff then leave the PVCs to community leaders to distribute. I believe that should not be the responsibility of the village heads to do that but INEC.

"Again, how can we realistically expect INEC to make PVCs available to every registered voter within two weeks, something they failed to do in many years.”

Sports / Will Yaya Toure Prove To Be The Difference? by Newsupdates: 6:27am On Feb 08, 2015
Bata - Yaya Toure will make the difference on Sunday when he leads Ivory Coast out against neighbours Ghana in the Africa Nations Cup final, his coach Herve Renard said on Saturday.

"I'm sure Yaya will play a decisive game. He will
arrive in time. You saw he scored a fantastic goal in
the semi-final and that was not by chance.

"When you are fantastic player, these key important
games are for you. They are always ready. For them
there is no added pressure. The adrenalin of the
competition is making all the difference," Renard
told reporters.

"I'm sure Yaya will play a very good final."

It will be a third final appearance for the 31-year-old
Toure, who was on the losing side in 2006 in Egypt
and in 2012 when the Ivorians lost to Zambia on
penalties.

Toure had been out of sorts in the months leading
up to this tournament but a trademark goal from the edge of the area, hit with incredible power and
accuracy, put the Ivory Coast on their way to a 3-1
semi-final win over Democratic Republic of Congo in Bata on Wednesday.

The Ivorians will, however, be without midfielder
Cheick Tiote, who has not recovered from an ankle
injury picked up early on in the tournament.
"We are focused on the target. We have not talked a
lot before the tournament about our ambitions but
we know why we are here and what we need to do,"
Renard added.
"There will be a time to talk later bur most important is to play on Sunday."

Politics / Buhari Can Not Tackle Boko Harm Unless He Is Their Commander-doyin Okupe by Newsupdates: 7:15am On Feb 07, 2015
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has reacted to some of the criticisms trailing president Jonathan ,also talking about the opposition APC and why Buhari can't end insurgency immediately .

Read excerpts from his interview with Olalekan Adetayo of Punch

Despite the achievements President Goodluck Jonathan claims to have made, what will you say is responsible for the general perception that this government has performed below expectation?
I like it that you used the word perception. There is a negative sinister perception created by the opposition. I will tell you how. The opposition has a tremendous influence on Nigerian media and therefore, most of these achievements are suppressed from coming to public glare. The second one is that achievements and good news do not make news but when Boko Haram keeps bombing and killing, that is the news. I have looked at newspapers’ headlines for one year, 75 per cent of headlines are on Boko Haram. It doesn’t matter even if you say that the President had just gone to commission an industry somewhere but when you say 285 killed in Monduga, Borno State, that is what people will remember.

Insurgency has been overplayed to the extent that it has overshadowed the laudable achievements of this administration and it is deliberate. I know for a fact that the issue of Boko Haram was designed and executed from the beginning to malign this administration. There was Boko Haram before this administration, but the evil people in the society who felt there was no way they could remove the administration saw an opportunity and they encouraged it one way or the other to the extent that we never had rest in the last two to three years.

Don’t you think the issue of the missing Chibok girls has affected the political fortune of the President?

It is not just Chibok girls; everything that has to do with this insurgency has affected the political fortune of the President. The good news however is that in spite of it all, this administration has verifiable and concrete achievements that nobody can argue about.

How do you react to the claim by the opposition that the President lacks the capacity to fight Boko Haram?

It is only the mentally derailed that will say that. Because there is insurgency here, then the government is not doing well. It is nonsense talk. It is absolute nonsense talk. Insurgency is not a Nigerian affair. How much is our national budget? About N4tr. How much is that in dollars? Is that not $2b? That is not up to what America gives to Egypt on a yearly basis. It is only foolish people and some not too experienced politicians as well as ignorant and mischief makers that will say that because Jonathan’s administration has not been able to end insurgency, then he does not have what it takes to tackle Boko Haram.

When Buhari says he will end insurgency, that is total rubbish. He does not know what he is talking about, it is not going to happen unless he is the one who controls the boys on the field. That is the only reason why he can end insurgency immediately. Because in that case, what he needs to do as their commander is to ask them to stop and they will stop. If that is not the case, nobody can say he will end insurgency like that. That is just political gimmick and nobody should take him seriously. The issue of insurgency is not a campaign performance of President Jonathan.

Do you exercise any fear of possible post-election violence in the country?

That question should go to APC people. They are the ones that are identified with violence and also canvass for violence and perpetrate violence. There is no doubt about it, they have said it before and they have made it happen. We have nothing to do with violence. We win all the time, we are going to win again. We just pray that when we win, people will accept it readily and not create violence as they did in 2011. Many people who suffered the 2011 violence have not recovered from it.

How will you react to the belief that those of you who surround the President always respond with anger to criticism and attack personalities instead of addressing issues?

What issues are there to attend to? Those who call the President clueless, those who say the President is a drunkard, those who say the President is a non-performer, are those issues? It is just because this President is liberal. We do not have a choice than to be angry. I am angry because I know that people are painting the President in colours that he does not deserve and they are doing it deliberately, not based on facts. They are using the media to manipulate the minds of people. They abuse the President but when we respond, they will say it is unpresidential. If you do not want to be insulted, do not insult others.

You once predicted that APC will not last one year. The party is almost two years now. How do you feel?

My prediction helped them because I found out that every day they meet, instead for them to fight, they will saying so.
