Crime / CAUGHT! NDLEA Seizes N159m Tablets Of Tramadol by NgNewsTv: 2:11pm On Mar 27, 2018
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Monday said it had seized 159 million tablets of Tramadol at Apapa Port in Lagos. The Director, Technical Services of the agency, Femi Oloruntoba, made this known at a public hearing organised by the Senate Joint Committee on Drugs and Narcotics and Health in Abuja.Tramadol is a narcotic-like pain reliever used to treat or moderate severe pain.Oloruntoba revealed that 50 tonnes of Tramadol was recently destroyed in Kano alone. He said there were laws guiding the use of controlled drugs like Tramadol and Cocaine and what was needed was enforcement of the laws.“In 2016, about 31 different substances were abused inNigeria,” he said. The director noted that the drug was on the exclusive legislative list and should not be taken to the concurrent, adding that if that was done, there would be a huge anarchy. He lamented that only the Federal High Court had jurisdiction to try drug cases, describing it as “a challenge”.He said because the cases could not be prosecuted in the magistrate court, most of the time, the Federal High Court was choked over too many cases. The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Christiana Adeyeye, said the agency lacked adequate manpowerfor frequent visitation to pharmaceutical companies.Represented by Dr. Umar Musa, Director, Narcotics and Controlled Substances, Adeyeye said drug problem was a genuine crisis that required collective efforts to tackle.Chairman of the Senate Committee, Sen. Joshua Lidani, said the use of illicit drugs, trafficking and other pharmaceutical drugs abuse, particularly among women and youth, were worrisome and on the increase by the day.Lidani said: “This calls for concern and urgent action to stem the tide.“It behooves stakeholders to strengthen and redouble our efforts to tame it and where possible, strengthen the capacity of agencies charged with the responsibility of enforcing relevant laws to enable them discharge their responsibilities effectively.”

Crime / Pastor Jailed 14 Years For Trafficking Two Kids In Kaduna State by NgNewsTv: 11:14am On Mar 27, 2018
Justice Haruna Offorof a High Court in Nasarawa State has jailed a Kaduna State-based cleric, Pastor Bawa Madaki. The judge on Monday sentenced Madaki to 14 years’ imprisonment for trafficking two children aged five and seven years old – without an option of fine. Following his arrest, the pastor was arraigned on a two count of deceitfully taking the two underage children from their parents in the Zanzo Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Madaki subsequently sent one child to Lagos State in “an illegal adoption arrangement and the other to Abuja as a domestic worker, thus depriving their parents of the children.” The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Josiah Emerole who disclosed that Madaki’s trial commenced on June 23, 2015.Emerole said,“a cleric, Pastor Bawa Madaki, from Kaduna State, has been sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment for child trafficking. The accused was arraigned on two counts of fraudulently procuring two underage children from their parents. The trial commenced on June23, 2015, and on Monday, March 26, 2018, the court found the accused guilty. The Director-General, NAPTIP, Julie Okah-Donli, has therefore cautioned the public against illegal adoption and engagement of underage children as domestic workers, who are often maltreated and abused by their employers. We warn detractors to desist from such acts as the long arm of the law will catch up with them if they fail to do so. This brings the convictions secured by NAPTIP to 342.”
