Health / Mandating Immunity Passorts For Coronavirus: What You Should Know About It by nicebuddy501: 5:48am On May 10, 2020
Today, there is a call for issuance of immunity passport to people who recovered from covid-19. This may also take the form of arm bands or certificates.

Not all people who recovered from covid-19 have strong immunity to the virus. The level of antibodies in their blood ranges from undetectable levels to high levels and we do not know their decay rate, that is how long they will last in the blood.

If the immunity passports or certificate will be awarded to vaccinated individuals, we should make sure that the vaccine will be effective in enhancing the production of protective antibodies and we must validate that the vaccine should be able to confer lifelong immunity.

Health / How do you know you are immune to coronavirus? by nicebuddy501: 5:37am On May 10, 2020
Immunity to covid-19 infection can achieved in two ways. One way is following recovery from the infection. And the second way is through vaccination. This virus has high mortality rate, hence, we need a potent vaccine quickly to mitigate its deadly outcome.

Although critically ill patient who recovered from the disease will be more likely to have more prolonged immunity, it is too early to say if they will have lifelong immunity.

Individuals who manifested only mild symptoms will most likely have lower immunity and stand a chance of being re-infected by the virus during a later outbreak.

At the moment, no vaccine is available to protect people from covid-19, but research is underway. However, there are many concerns regarding covid-19 vaccine.

Our problems did not start recently. The federal government more often than not are against the populace. How do you brazenly want to reloot a looted fund. Here we still have the same regime that claimed that Gen. Sani Abacha never stole a dime.

Politics / Re: COVID-19: SERAP Asks Buhari To Use Confiscated Stolen Assets As Isolation Centre by nicebuddy501: 10:53am On May 03, 2020
While it is important to ramp-up testing for COVID-19 to prevent the spread of the virus, asking Nigerians to donate their buildings as isolation centres would be counter-productive, as it would put them at greater risk of contracting and spreading COVID-19.

This is where I am having problem with the way the federal government is handling this coronavirus scourge. They need to increase daily testing for covid-19. Previously they said that 4000 cases will be tested on a daily basis. However, up till now only 13k cases have been tested nationwide. This is very disheartening.

Please follow WHO guidelines and remain protected.

Borno State government has confirmed that sixteen health workers tested positive for Coronavirus.

Usman Umar Kadafur, the State’s Deputy Governor and chairman of the response team disclosed this on Saturday during a press briefing in Maiduguri, the State capital.

He added that so far, a total of 69 COVID-19 persons have been confirmed positive in Borno State, NAN reports.

The State’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Salisu Kwaya-Bura, also speaking, said the number of health workers that tested positive in Borno showed the increasing risks being faced in the fight against coronavirus.

He added that in view of the development, about 2,000 Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), had been ordered by the State.

Health / Anxiety In Kano Over Continuing Deaths, People Leaving Ancient City In Droves by nicebuddy501: 9:59am On May 03, 2020
Anxiety has continued to mount over Kano State, especially its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, believed to be responsible for the growing number of deaths recorded daily in the state.

People of the state are now living in fear of the unknown, many have started to leave the ancient city in droves and may be inadvertently spreading the virus to neighbouring states.
Relatedly, yesterday the federal government escalated its containment efforts by opening additional three mobile testing centres to strengthen the war against the virus in the state.
Curiously however, Governor Abdulahi Ganduje, has despite the disturbing situation in the state, relaxed the lockdown order for Ramadan purposes, with increased deaths in the last 24 hours, including the passing of the Emir of Rano, Alhaji Tafida Abubakar Ila and the state’s Head of Communications, UNICEF, Malam Rabiu Musa. These have further heightened fear of residents. Particularly worrisome many of the almajiris who have left the city have tested positive to the coronavirus.

Also, in obedience to Islamic injunctions, which prescribe immediate burial for Muslims, the cause of a majority of the deaths have been largely unknown, fuelling speculations between some unknown and unverified illness and the ravaging COVID-19 because testing is not being done.

But the Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, yesterday, said the current spate of community spread of COVID-19 could have been averted had the country shut down its borders earlier than it did in late March.
Fayemi, who said the situation has though not affected the commendable response of the Nigerian governments at all levels to the challenge posed by the pandemic, however hinted that the numbers would not stop climbing until sometime in June or July, when the curve would begin to flatten.

Yesterday night at 11. 55pm NCDC disclosed that 220 new cases had been confirmed bringing the total cases so far to 2388, while those discharged stood at 385 and deaths so far stood at 85. Lagos top yesterday confirmed cases with 62 new cases, followed be FCT with 52 cases, Kaduna 31, Sokoto 13, Kebbi 10, Yobe 9, Borno 6, Edo 5, Bauchi 5, Gombe 4, Enugu 4, Oyo 4, Zamfara 3, Nasarawa 2, Osun 2, Ebonyi 2, Kwara 2, Kano 2, Plateau 2.
This notwithstanding, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha has said the battle against COVID-19 was winnable but with the full cooperation and support of the Nigerian people by adhering to all the safety rules and protocols.

Health / COVID-19: Condom Scarcity Looms As Demands Increase by nicebuddy501: 5:54am On May 03, 2020
The world’s biggest maker of condoms, Karex Berhad, has warned of a global shortage as supply falls by almost 50 per cent.

The manufacturer also disclosed that its stockpile is set to last for just another two months.

According to Forbes, Karex produces five billion condoms a year, accounting for roughly 15 per cent of the world market.

Group Chief Executive Officer at Malaysia-based Karex Berhad, Goh Miah Kiat, revealed this to Bloomberg in an interview.

Kiat also warned that condoms could get a lot more expensive as a result.

The CEO said demands have been growing at ‘double digits’ as governments around the world issued stay-at-home notices and many people abstain from having children due to the uncertain future.

“I would definitely say this is an unprecedented stage; we have never seen such a disruption.

“We are still paying all our workers’ full salaries, but workers only come in half the time, so, generally, there will be a cost increase,” he added.

The company said it only restarted its factories on Friday after a week-long closure, working with just half its workforce to comply with a lockdown that Malaysia imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

The company said condoms are mainly made in China and India, which are both heavily impacted by the pandemic.

Health / New Mum Dies Of COVID-19, Infects Three Others In Ekiti by nicebuddy501: 5:03am On May 03, 2020
Ekiti State Government on Saturday officially confirmed record of three new COVID-19 cases in the state, as announced Friday night by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

The government said the three new COVID-19 cases were among those infected with the virus by the now late 29-year old pregnant woman.

The pregnant woman was earlier reported to have sneaked into the state from Lagos, but later died of the complications arising from the virus after she was delivered of her baby.

The State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Mojisola Yahaya-Kolade, disclosed this in a statement in Ado Ekiti.

“We can confirm that three of the samples sent to the NCDC accredited laboratory for testing returned positive results of the COVID-19 virus infection.

“The samples were from three of the primary contacts of our third case – the late 29-year-old mother who died of complications from childbirth on April 22, 2020,” she said.

According to her, the new positive cases are all females, with ages ranging from 26-50 years and who had been in self isolation for 14 days now.

“This brings the total confirmed cases in Ekiti State to 11 out of which eight are active, two discharged, with one death recorded, ” she said.

It would be recalled that the government had, in the previous weeks, announced that the late 29-year-old woman came in contact with over 70 persons during the course of her visits to about three hospitals before the delivery of her baby through Casarean.

She later died at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti and was subsequently buried under strict supervision of state government officials.

Among COVID-19 victims traced to her case is a 45-year-old medical doctor from a private hospital in the state.
